"Running With the Beatles"
A few months ago, a soloed vocal track of David Lee Roth’s performance on Van Halen’s “Runnin’ With the Devil” started going around. When I first heard it, I thought it was funny, but I also thought it was so violating. I remember laughing and shaking my head at the same time, especially knowing what it’s like to be in a vocal booth with headphones on lettin’ loose. Hearing vocals “soloed” during a mix without any effects on them, and I go running from the room. So I was feeling Diamond Dave’s potential pain. His is actually a really good performance, but it’s naked as a jaybird and I’m sure it wasn’t intended to be heard this way.
It usually starts out with some engineers checking out the 24 track reels in the studio vaults out of professional curiosity. Then they leak a few compelling tracks to their engineer friends to check out, and then the tracks get around. About three years ago some of John Bonham’s drum tracks got around because they sounded so amazing. Same thing with an Al Green vocal track, where you could hear him stomping around in the booth to the music you couldn’t hear. And as unsettling as this “leakage” is, I certainly didn’t complain when I found an a cappella track of CSS’s “Alala” for my L7 vs. CSS mashup “Pretend We’re Alala” online, (but at least that vocal had effects on it already).
So now new art is being created from David Lee Roth’s vocal track. Personally I love “Runnin’ with The Beatles” I think it’s really well done, the audio and video mashup are most excellent. Blasphemous? Sure. Entertaining? Yes. Unstoppable? Absolutely. Just ask Tom Cruise.

Wow, Donita, that’s an amazing mashup.
Who are you Saint pppmntpati? That’s amazing.
Ummmm pretty much any music, mostly Alternative Rock

Hey, Dood, how’s the Maple Leaf’s doing, playoff bound? ;-)
We are having a little party tonight. This is the tune I always play when my lady has had enough, and suggests to me it’s time to say goodnight to our friends.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
The only way that the Maple Leafs will be in the Playoffs is if they buy tickets ! *g*
Good one
Whhoo!
I am sore to-day!
I’m getting too old for the front row at concerts with Mosh pits.
I scored free tickets to an invitation only concert by Flogging Molly in Portland last night and me an’ a buddy got right up behind the little security fence for an awesome show.
things got pretty darn rough up front, it was sponsored by Jack Daniels and they were giving away free whiskey all night.
As a long time whiskey drinker, it almost killed me, but I been on the wagon since October so I passed.
The Mosh pit got downright wicked and me and my buddy tried to shield to young ladies right in front of us from the brunt of it. On the way home we both agreed we are getting too old for that nonsense, both of us feel like we have been in a tackle football game without pads,
GREAT SHOW though!
Have you ever written about how music transcends barriers and limitations ?
I like when Eddie steps in for George’s solo.
lmao @ the american idol takes.
Hey fini!
Just did that imeem thing…sounds like a good idea, indeed!
Hi Bruno,
I’ve got an email coming your way with some photos. Sorry I’ve been super busy but I can’t wait to see you in LA!
Love to you.
Donita
I’m serious…I’m the chick you remembered from L7 shows
from the Donnas show in Boston. I’ll be going from one show to the
next just like you and stellar moments. I wanna do what I can for
you. You can reach me at pppmntpati@aol.com
Anything you need at these local shows, It will be my pleasure to make
this Transmiticate tour a success! There’s a place called Milly’s Tavern
in Manchester, NH. I think you should play there too. I’ll bring the
crowd, we’ll help sell the merch! Whatever you need!
You’re version of “Fly feather Fly” (slurred trasmitication) is cool, kind of creepy, in a good way!
I really like the Beatles/DLR mashup as well, funny AND well-done.
Hello Busted! What’s shakin’ wildman?
*sigh* I wish Dave would get back together with’em, Van Hagar sucked…!
Nope, really I just kinda write like album or concert reviews or I’ll talk about some new band that I think is cool that isn’t really well known. Every now and then I’ll write something about alot of the mainstream music that I don’t like.
So yeah, kinda mixing it up
I know, I’ve watched it way too many times now. Amazing. Love to you Jane!
HA! Awesome! Thanks so much :) That one was particularly fun to do – I love the ‘new guitar line’ melody too — :D That’s awesome, I’m glad you checked it out! :)
Passing on free whiskey in that or any situation is damn impressive. Congrats!
Thanks AZ Matt
I miss you already…
by the way, “transmiticate” is an amazing album…can’t stop listening… stellar moments is awesome!
love,
B
Busted, that is truly inspiring.
Watching the mashup clip again, something else really. Mashups IMO may have brought humor back into the equation in a big way…
ManchVegas!

Oh my god. That must’ve been a moshing nightmare, especially looking out for the ladies too.
Hellooo
how is everyone today?
Mashups are fun
Donita, also listened to Pretend We’re Alala in the last week. Again, humor — but it’s still a damn fine job — I also like how when you did Pretend We’re Dead live in Brazil, you added the ‘alala’ toward the end…mashing up the live performance :> awesome!
GregB
You from Manchester?
you are a doll. I’ll get ahold of you. Thanks very much.
The ribs will heal in time.
*g*
Hi thormaillet! I’ll get to you this week.
Casseroo, what up “Out in the West Texas Town of El Paso”?
Today is ‘ok’ not ‘wonderful’ yet…though my twin bro is going to be here hopefully in a few, we will go out for tea and then listen to L7’s first album (don’t be too upset, Donita :> … there’s some fun stuff on it) …
Heh…
“Ads by Google” brought up Van Halen Tickets.
HAH! Love it!
ahh the classic!
“I feel the bullet go deep in my side”
OT – just seeing the news for the first time today. go democrats, go no telecom immunity. YAAAAAY. i just called my rep, doggett, and sent big thank you’s. they were especially happy to hear it made my day.
Girl, I’ve missed you so much. What’s going on?
Donita, just get in touch and let me know how I can best help.
I’m so excited about this new cd. It’s like a dream come true.
Not to sound corny but girl it’s been way WAY too long!
love it. and you made me flash back to when i worked in the band production office at a paul mccartney show and the production manager was screwing up his courage to tell linda a tape was making the rounds that isolated her vocal from a live show, but she reacted with good humor to the rather out of tune notes.
my lasting memory from the show is seeing linda and her teenage son come bounding around the corner arm and arm after sound check, just wrapped up in love.
guess news that lady heather got herself a $96 million (U.S.) divorce settlement from sir paul has made me a bit nostalgic.
Thanks, I’m glad you like the music.
Donita
your pretend we’re alala is a work of art. best mash-up i know of, although this diamond dave video is a close second. lol. saw you sing on stage with CSS. you should tour with them in Europe. are you going to do festivals this year?
That’s a very nice lasting memory to have. Way better than the mean spirited yet irresistible vocal track.
Cool video. ;-)
Ok everyone, I’m out a little early today. I’m helping my friend with a way out audio art piece. Have fun, see you next week here at The Spin.
I’ve been listening to the Pretend We’re Alala mashup alot this week, I really enjoy it
Sat two pews behind McCartneys at a concert at St. Ignatius Loyola, before their marriage, probably around 2001. The event was a new work composed by Paul’s friend, composer John Tavener*, during which Paul did a reading.

Hello Donita 8-), Mista Finito, Mista Thor (I don’t know if you are around?) and guys… Hope you alllll are ok…
Hey Donita, about the video, it seems like a “trick” from the Illuminoids, isn’t it? ;-D
(I am late, I hope not too late! I thought it starts at 12.00am here but it’s 11.00pm! Aaaah cactus!)
This is the best mashup I’ve heard recently.
SHIT, DOUBLE SHIT!!! TOO LATE :-(
Guys, I’m off…to cry…boohoohoohoohhoooo..!
There’s this guy, Party Ben, who makes really great mashups, check em out:
http://partyben.com/downloads/
Whoaaaa calm down, I’m sure it’s not late, all of us are still here :D
LCactus7–
We still love you!
gahh you still here?
He’ll be back……everyone always comes back ;)
Ooooooooooooooh that’s so sweet! Thank you… I’m gonna stay here a little bit then! I was just a little sad to miss the Great One…
But hey guys, I’m a bad chatter! (my english, you know…)
Y’know someone once told me I was speaking ‘unbearable’ English :> … and I’m a ‘native speaker’…I think your English is decent enough to talk :>
I guess so :> I’m running back and forth right now… btw how did you find out/get into L7/DS?
January 2007…..I was on Last.fm checking out some new music I’ve never heard before, like if there was an artist I didn’t know of I’d listen to about 30 seconds of the song, if I liked it, I’d keep listening, if I didn’t I’d skip it and move on. And L7 had come on and the song “Talk Box” off the Hungry For Stink album had played, and I thought it sounded pretty cool, and I decided to listen to more L7 and I heard Pretend We’re Dead and I really got into L7.
Thanx man, I can say (a little) what I want but almost never the way I want. But hey, “petit à petit”…
Ha! That’s awesmoe, have you picked up “The Beauty Process” yet, probably my favorite…
I ALMOST got to, I was at the CD store one day and I saw it there, but I didn’t have any money, so I made sure next time I went back (which was a couple weeks after) I had enough, and when I did, the only copy was gone!!
One of the best mashups I have ever heard was C. Aguilaras’ “What a Girl wants” with the Velvet Undergrounds “Rock and Roll” I have also heard someone mash “Drop it like its hot” with “Whole lotta Love” Sorry I have no way to link to these and I downloaded them at least a year ago and don’t remember the site but they are worth searching for if you are a total music geek like me. I want to hear everything.
Donita, Not to date myself but I took my son and his friends to see L7 at a converted church outside of San Luis Obispo,Ca. many years ago. A friend and I stood on top of a dumpster outside the building with a perfect side view of the stage, The show was absolutely incredible and I have been a fan ever since. I grew up in an era that kind of thought “chicks can’t rock”. I know you all weren’t the first band to disprove that stupid theory but you sure did raise the bar to new heights. Can’t wait to get your new cd.
See you Folks! :-**********
