Looks like the Republican's "secret session" strategy backfired, and they lost some Bush Dogs in the process.
Eleven Democrats voted "nay," and that may include some protest votes from progressives.
Leonard Boswell, one of the 21 Bush Dogs who signed the original letter to Pelosi expressing support for telecom immunity actually spoke on the floor in favor of passing this bill without it, and voted the right way. Props to his primary challenger Ed Fallon and his helpful FISSA statement, and whatever part it played in Boswell's inspirational "come to Jesus" moment.

well, almost
Big w00t for the House!!!111
Now we get to take on Jello Jay and his band of corporate apologists.
Finally…
protest votes from progressives? WTF?
ill bake the cookies!!!!!
Outstanding Jane…this is good news to report to my crew!
Yay!
Well, we’ll see what happens in a couple weeks when the Senate reconvenes. Maybe Harry will grow a set now that he sees the House didn’t back down.
Maybe, just maybe, they saw Obama’s coattails in the Foster vote. Maybe they saw the writing on the wall…
Jane,
Sorry, but I don’t understand what you mean that some progressives voted nay as a protest vote?
never thought i’d say this, really
but nancy pelosi kicked ass today when she got up and refuted the repugs constant accusations of antipatriotism. She was so pissed she was choking. It was really thrilling. didin’t think she had it in her.
just goes to show…
Remember the prescient words of Bill Cosby (before you party too hard): “there’s always room for Jello.”
hot diggety!
I’m just coming off a four-day drunk, thanks to Ferraro and Spitzer (yeah, yeah, I admit, it was just a pity-party to drown my sorrows), so I’m sobering up for a day or two, but…
If we ever do manage to strip immunity from the FISA bill to the point it becomes the law of the land,
then I’m gonna go on a bender like you ain’t never seen.
Yay, yay, yeah! I’m so happy I could shout with joy! When will we be able to see who flipped and who didn’t? I went to Roll Call, but the last thing posted is vote 00085, S Con Res. 70.
Looks like just about everything has backfired on the Republicans. From ‘the new world order’ to the economy.
good news for a change
It’s the dawning of a new time. Vote Democratic. Vote Obama.
“But again, if there is a merit to having a closed session that is worth pushing back consideration of the bill, let’s hear what their purpose is,” she said.
Secret sessions were common in the early 1800s, but the House has held only three since 1830, not counting Thursday’s, according to the Congressional Research Service. The third was in 1983, to discuss U.S. support for efforts to overthrow the government of Nicaragua.

Rep. David Obey, a veteran Wisconsin Democrat, said he took part in that session and the two previous ones, in 1979 and 1980.
“And I think the great utility of having another one, given the mumbo-jumbo I heard in the last three, is to demonstrate the almost total uselessness of secret sessions,” he said
Just flyin’ by to note props to Schumer who actually made a powerful point in what’s wrong with Bushlogic. That credit works when people have confidence that what they’re buying will have value. Something everybody can understand…
loosely translated, ‘merika realizes when they bought Bush, he drove ‘em off the road and into the ditch because he’s a lemon…and there ain’t no hope for lemonade by staying behind his wheel.
And here Jane reports this great news about the immunity obfuscation failure.
Boo-yah! A two-fer today!
dont tell BO
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh BO is a muslim spy/
nobody (at last 70% or more of nobodies) believes bush about anything.
Eveyone knows this is a cover-my-ass proposal for illegal acts by BUSHCo. Even some of the telecoms say as much.
start the grinder and eat this chimperer up.
unfortunate initials, BO
Glad to see that we are going to give the fighting Dems lots of carrots to go along with the sticks we sometimes take to whipping them with.
They deserve monster coverage of every brave word or act taken today (or the last few days) to acheive this result. We should go over their words and actions with the same level of positive scrutiny we so often use to nagatively parse every craven theing they do.
So, let the revelling in their achievemtn begin and let’s make sure we don’t forget to thank them each and all.
I didn’t see the debate, but somebody on EW’s thread said Pelosi really kicked ass. As someone who has never hesitiated to give Nancy a hard time when I thoguht she deserved it, let me take a moment to say:
Congratulations, Madame Speaker, for holding your voting block together and for such a worthy cause and thank you for all the hard work and effort I am sure went into this achievement!
Pentagon announces al-Qaeda capture. Hmmmmm. The stench of contrived shiny objectism permeates the press. Wonder how long they’ve had this guy tucked away to pop out when they need to deflect from things like Bush’s dismal speech at the NY Economics club and this vote?
Pressure works.
that poster was saying unkind things aboutBO…on the last thread
Don’t forget to thank Steny Hoyer. He gave a passionate speech on the floor for our constitution at the close.
Just maybe Bush’s veto threat urged some to challenge him. Most people hate to be threatened. At some point you just fight the bully.
And, many thanks to Jane and Christy for staying on top of FISA, keeping us well informed and making tools available to us to give Congress a nudge. It’s an honor to serve.
Hooray! My phone calls today were not in vain!
So what’s next? How long til this bill is just dead?
Oh, yeah.
Number 3 #27 ?
I wonder where President McCain will stand on privacy and domestic snooping?
Wow, what a perfect example of politics and policy colliding. The policy choice may be self-evident, but until the politics overtake the issue, nothing can/will happen/change.
‘Tis but a battle won, the war still rages.
yes he truly rose to the occaison
As an American who has had to spend hours (and HOURS!!) tracking down messes related to identity fraud, I have deep and passionate regard for privacy, and for the protection of personal information.
I never thought the Dems would actually come through.
I never thought that I’d learn so much about a law that I’d never heard of before last year (FISA).
Very grateful to FDL, EW, Glenzilla, and all involved.
I tip my hat to you all; thank you very, very much.
hahaha…can you imagine how much he has been subjected to?
Yes to that. Call that a good way to spend a Friday afternoon - attaboy phonecalls.
You could not have chosen a better video to illustrate the post! I thought I was the only one who posted Wanda Jackson.
amen!
Well spoken!
I was really proud of Nancy Pelosi, and Jane Harmon wasn’t too shabby either.
I imagine there’s some serious stomping about the White House this afternoon - on the chimpy’s part; and some white knuckling of a scotch glass on the big dick’s part.
If it weren’t real, hearing Bush on the economy would be a hoot. One comedic statement after the other of which he had no idea of what he spoke.
Thanks Jane for the report.
Thank you Madame Speaker and all of the House Dems that stood for the rule of law and the Constitution today.
Thanks to all the firepups who live blogged the debate also. (I am at work)
People seem to be going with ‘BHO’, instead.
Lahoma and I have the afternoon off. Big pep rally at our school. We rarely go to them. My lady has just paid me an exterme compliment. She tells me I am in her view, the left-wing version of John Wayne.
Kudos to Jane, Christy, Marcy and all the gang. Bmaz-ing performance. Thank you.
I’m sorry, looseheadprop, but you used the word “monster” in your post, so you are fired, regardless of whether the term “monster” was appropriate.
heh just tuning in. Is that what the silly adolecents on the dark side are calling him?
“The Patriot Act”. What was that all about?
No, she’s an “unofficial” adviser. Karl Rove doesn’t get fired by McCan’t just because all he learned about “the truth” he learned from George Bush.
You two are so cute. I just love it.
New Topic: what’s for dinner tonight? *g*
I shall celebrate the victory and get ready for the next round which I’m sure will be nastier. What I would give to be a little mouse in the corner of Darth’s office and shrub’s playroom! Bet there’s a lot of f… words bouncing off the walls. Humph!
yay! and congrats to the blogosphere and the citizens for keeping the dems’ feet to the fire.
i am no fan of Steny Hoyer (far from it) but I loved his response to the reThugs calls for bipartisanship. He really deserves appreciation for that.
Bushbaby will be even more petulant at his next no-question Press Conference.
And no one will care.
Dead Duck.
oddly enough Capuano (D-MA) voted no. Is that a protest vote?
The praise for the crew was so heady I completely dropped the ball, lost my train of thought. LHD and others are a big part of why this blog is so effective in helping us understand and respond to critical issues the MSM refuses to cover. Thanks to all.
O/T Aor Force has changed their logo to : Over All
Anyone else have the song, Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles.
I love good news on a Friday. Heck anytime is fine, but it’s a nice way to end the week.
One small step for mankind!!!!!!!
any word on which Bush Dogs are going to get hit with robocalls yet for their disgraceful FISA vote?
please let it be carney.
I suppose kucinich’es “nay” vote was a protest?
could you enlighten me on this reasoning, what if the vote failed, his protest would have helped the president
Hi folks, just flying low over the lake right now to say…
Wahoo!!!
Best Wishes to Jane and the rest of you pups on a some really good news…
Hey, what better way to start a weekend!!!
Let’s Party!!!
OT but I have to comment that the day shrub talks about the economy at length the markets take another dive and the steepest drops occurred right after his talk.
Bush urges patience on economy
AP - President Bush preached optimism and Republican orthodoxy of minimalist government intervention Friday as the best approach to an increasingly troubled economy.
“Minimalist government intervention”? Oh yes. Like in FISA perhaps?
I doubt he would have voted nay if the bill was going to fail.
He and Nance finally spoke a little truth to power today. They don’t often seem to do that in public. Perhaps they now read FDL, or can’t get at their e-mail because of all our messages. Don’t care: one small step for Democrats, one giant leap for democracy.
are you suggesting these might me related?
Here are the 12 Dems who voted “nay” (from the link at the top under the vote total):
Boren
Capuano
Carney
Cooper
Filner
Hinchey
Holden
Kucinich
Lampson
McDermott
Shuler
Welch (VT)
Deutchland uber alles
how could he have been certain?
and what point is he trying to make, I am lost right now
I don’t know yet. She hasn’t suggested (or inquired) what I might be hungry for tonight. So far. But that inquiry is coming. You can bet on it.
Kucinich also voted no on the extension to the PAA, even though that would have helped the position of most Democrats. He’s been very consistent: anything that increases FISA beyond the original is bad.
As to whether Kucinich would’ve voted yes if his voted was “needed” … my prediction is he wouldn’t.
He’s a purist. Now that I think about it, he’s the photo negative of Bush.
Not voting:
GOP:
Boustany
Brown-Waite, Ginny
Everett
Hunter
LaHood
Musgrave
Nunes
Peterson (PA)
Pickering
Tancredo
Walsh (NY)
Weller
Young (AK)
Dems:
Cramer
Green, Gene
Hooley
Oberstar
Rangel
Rush
Woolsey
tell me what he is protesting, what didn’t he like about the bill, what would he have preferred
Bingo! He was given this opportunity to vote his concscience. If he was needed to vote ‘Aye’, he would have.
I lived in germany for years, they don’t even sing certain verses because of the Nazis
Where was Charlie Rangel? Why no vote?
Welch voted no? He’s adamantly against immunity.
I’m thinking he may support Nader in November.
now I get it, he doesn’t want any further extension of fisa
I agree with that position
He would prefer the bill to read, “NO RETROACTIVE IMMUNITY FOR THE CRIMINAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANIES.”
what’s next? When will the Senate take this up?
Not taking it up is allowing it to die (not good for Ds since they will be held responsible, but good for Americans). If the Senate takes it up and aproves: Bush vetoes. If the Senate will not approve: back to square one. Either way the poison pill has worked.
My only worry is that Rs will exploit this and Ds don’t know how to play that game. [ Why can’t the Ds be running commercials - “The D House of Reps has passed two pieces of legislation to protect America and the WH has bullied Rs both times into stonewalling and stalling so that neither can pass. Pres Bush says protecting America is important, yet threatens to veto any bill we pass to protect America …” I realize they need lessons from Boehner (straight face, maybe a tear) in order to make it work
Kucinich not being on the Death to BlueDogs voting list (for reasons all his own voting his way), were all these, literally speaking, traitors the the Constitution and America on that list?
And what perris sed at 86
Woolsey is recovering from back surgery.
My high school anthem was to that tune. I never knew it until years later.
What’s the deal with the USAF? I noticed a new stylized emblem, but nothing about music.
Have you heard of King Midas? Well this is King Shitass - everything he touches turns to shit.
Isn’t the next round simply the Senate rolling over and going
Bush’sRockefeller’s way and sticking immunity back in and then, because the idiots in the House voted wrong, the House being stuck giving it an up-or-down vote?Wow. Excellent news. The Constitution survives a while longer!
No idea, new way to get victims (oh, I mean recruits). It is very creepy though to have a slogan that simply reads, ABOVE ALL
I thot we heard “No” earlier, because they can’t amend an amendment. The House change was technically an amendment, wasn’t it?
JANE!
That was such a great song to Swing in the middle of the room to.
Thank you!
The AF is trying to be the masters of air, space, and cyberspace (how that fits into the very meat and potatoes of Air Force, I don’t know…perhaps they - we, as I am still in the AF as a reservist - should change our name to the United States Murderous Geek Force?).
So where do things stand now? Does it go to a conf committee or to Bush?
That’s off the hook!
great news.
Above All
Is this a god reference?
The Airforce has some pretty rabid end of timers.
Give Ms. Cbl my best, tell her I think of The Texas Tornados whenever I see her name. ;)
Are Rangel and Woolsey still on medical leave?
Can Bush add telcom immunity with a signing statement?
Into the air, Junior Birdmen
Into the air, pilots green!
Into the air, Junior Birdmen,
Climb into that old machine!
And when you hear that Franklin sputterin’
And you get your wings of tin
We will know the Junior Birdmen
Have sent their boxtops in!
While I don’t comment here (or anywhere) all that much, I have to say that these are the real “front lines” in our battle to save America and the Constitution. Unfortunately, there are plenty more hard fights ahead but today shows that we can make a difference. Makes me proud.
You guys rock!
It’s a lot easier to be rabid when your ass isn’t on the ground.
OT: Here’s a weird story about put options and Bear Sterns:
http://www.thestockmasters.com/node/404
They have also wrongly turned the Air Force Academy into an evangelical Christian institution.
I’m not fond of throwing the word “traitors” into the conversation lightly.
But yes, I do believe that with the exception of Kucinich, the others are Blue Dogs.
Working on the Senate is going to be some very hard work. Pressure. It means changing some minds.
I want to hear Dana Perino comment on this.
Kagro explains it all here.
I wrote to Leonard and told him NO More Checks from this Iowa Democrat unless the Constitution started being important. Sent him the quote from Mickey Edwards that Howie put up and told him to line up for the Constitution.
Ed Fallon is an insufferable self-righteous twit, but I’ll support him if Leonard doesn’t straighten up.
Thank You Representative Boswell. I think my phone calls and letters to his office may have helped. I like to think so anyway.:-)I had a nice conversation with one of his assistants yesterday and explained all of the concerns that have been enumerated and articulated here at the Lake. Thanks to Jane, Christy, et al. Keep up the great work.
That implies they have minds.
I don’t think you can add things with a signing statement. Just not do stuff. But we are talking about Mr. Iwilldoanythingiwantto.
Neither.
Technically speaking, the House amended the Senate’s amendment of a previous House bill. Thus, it goes back to the Senate for consideration — without possibility of a filibuster.
Kagro X is reasonably hopeful that this was a bit of legislative skill worked out between Nancy and Harry, to cut the power of the Senate GOP. We shall see.
Bush thinks he can add or subtract anything with the mere stroke of a pen. He will use the perfunctory, “I will interpret this law in view of my Article 2 powers as the supermysticalmagical unitary executive kingly Emperor!” That is, if he signed it. He will instead veto it as there is not enough votes in the House to override and the Senate is compromised vis a vis our liberty and Constitution and is essentially on the dark side already.
Have you been smoking something?
There certainly won’t be a President McCain in my lifetime.
that doesn’t make sense for Capuano or Welch. And McDermott usually knows better. scratches head.
I want to hear her comment on how the Bush tax cuts are helping Bear Stearns.
I believe so.
Speaking of a party, in connection with the vid at the top. I have just been informed from upstairs about how I would feel about a small late evening card party tonight? And if I thought this was a good idea would I perhaps give some consideration to being the bartender? Of course, I now realize (even though I was not thinking about parties or cards) I was actually subconsciously wanting a card party tonight. And I will build the Margaritas, and serve the Mexican beer. Lahoma does the food and the clean-up. That’s the deal. And not incidentally, this will be a very politically balanced party. Five Democrats, one independant and a Republican. Politics will be discussed. We are all teachers in the same school.
