Alright, we won a PAA victory today! I’ve already sent my thank you e-mails, and the only signing statement I have to add is, this is just the beginning!
Tell me, what would you like to write or shred tonight while we listen to some Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – We’re All in Love?

hi ES
In truth, I’d like to shred whomever it was who stole two delivered packages off of my front stoop today before I got home from work (meant in a totally non-violent way, of course, but still — grrrrrr!)
Executive order confetti for everyone!
It’s Ms. vacation herself..)
Ouch, sorry, mods, for that double post — no idea how that happened.
Confetti, popcorn strings, and paintballs for all!

Ah, yes, America is being held in such high regard these days.
Heckuva job Chimpy, you’re an international pariah.

Ain’t that the truth?
What about giving each member of congress and the P & VP a fancy copy of the constitution where they must sign it right next to the original signatories?
hi
margot rec’d you as a FB friend.
Hi Loo Hoo, oh just some goodies that I’d ordered for myself *g* I was mightily p.o.’ed earlier, but have since mellowed out a bit. Got the ball rolling with a police report and etc.
Aloha CT!
Did you see my response a couple of threads back that all the pyramid measurements are a multiple of pi because the Egyptians used the wheel to measure?
Bartcop was one of the first websites I ever found that hit Bush hard back in the day.

Yes, that would be nice! Hello!
Did anyone hear the F-bomb on MSNBC today?
They played a clip of the little Brittany Spears lad who weeps and screams ‘leave Brittany alone’ and one of the rants had the F-bomb that got past the editors.
Funny stuff.

Made me laugh out loud when I put it in the newsbox earlier this evening. Except with Bushco, you never know if they will call a military bluff.
Sorry, ES, which download?
Ooops, LL. let me try that link, download, one more time.
:o no! Sounds good, i’ll go check.
I’ve been grooving on the nasa tv in conjunction with pi mashup since earlier.

Israel has stated they will hold Syria responsible for any attacks by Hezbollah in retaliation for the Muganiyah killing.
So, that makes for an interesting bout of speculation.

Trouble on the Syria madre.
Saw this article earlier today and it reminded me of one of the Lake’s early YouTube threads.
Careful, then don’t look at my 87…!
True, Suz — I’ll keep peeking in for the pics.
This could also be quite the series of dominoes that get kicked over.

Talk about a tripwire.

At this rate I’ll be way behind this weekend with all of the YouTubes *g* — so here’s another one:
Townes Van Zandt — Buckskin Stallion Blues
i’ve seen that utube :)
I’ve never heard that by Howlin’ Wolf, and it’s wonderful. Huge thanks.
This is my favorite recently discovered amateur youtube.
You only call me when your drunk.
It would be easier to name the YouTube’s you haven’t seen than the ones you have!
Margot, sure thing….I love me some Howlin’ Wolf!

Some days I go to court in all-black – no tie – just all-black.
One of these days I’m gonna work up the nerve to say “Good Morning, Your Honor, I’m (low, low voice) Johnny Cash….

not to mention all the poo-flinging that seems to be going on. i knew politics was dirty but never realized just how nasty dirty it is.
anybody remember *this* guy?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CwKJapgzFk
Man, Johnny was totally strung out on something in that little session.
Someone on earlier today signed off b/c it was starting on a lower level on that thread. I really appreciate the Ladies of the Lake taking as a firm a stand as possible against it here; Nance Greggs has done a number of spot-on posts on the subject as well.
That article was great. If I had to attend a Bush speech I would probably get thrown out for laughing too loud.
oh yes- there are so many great quotes there!

Gail Collins is my favorite MSM opinion writer. Every single one is so right on, and so fun to read. Ouch, is right!
Oh Yeah!
I was up so close I could see the beads of sweat on their foreheads!
RBG, I would like to reprise one of your great YouTube finds:
Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6hQUFGsVf4
I was semi/sorta listening to him (about as much as the ol’ blood pressure will take) and noticed he took a coupla questions at the end. My Dem friend from down the street came to lunch and thought he had some sort of crib sheet on the podium wrt who was gonna ask the questions and giving him the answers. Same ol’ same ol’.Iirc, the answers were as screwy as the speech.
CT @141 -
About the best hit piece I’ve see outta the MSM since he got sworn in.
The only version of “Werewolves of London” that I can stomach:
David Lindley….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpebrtsSSYY
Why is it that radio stations always pick the worst song that a particular artist has ever done, and refuse to play anything other than *that* song?
Warren Zevon? – it’s gonna be “Werewolves of London”
Kinks? – it’s gonna be “Lola”
oops
Sorry, wasn’t ignoring you, i was answering a Facebook friend request from our very own Snarkassandra!
What a neat surprise!
I spent the morning at the Alaska GOP State Convention. Governor Palin made a speech in which she called for a vote on the ouster of the chairman of the party, over the chairman’s ties to our corrupt, convicted and investigated pols. The next person to speak was Shawn Parnell, the Lieutenant Governor. He announced he’s filing to run against Don Young in the primary. The place was pretty wild the rest of the morning. My new laptop went on the fritz, so I’m using my old one, the one that introduced me to firedoglake back in the summer of 2005.
Night gang.
Hope for peace, prepare for unending disaster, because you know who is running the show.
-G
I don’t think we said anything to piss punaise off. He’s probably taking a break. Everyone seems to once in a while. It’s just that his little two or three word comments said so much!
the fool will be haunted for years to come.
She took a dip earlier today!
She’s taking a sledgehammer the the rotted base of the AK GOP.
Congrats.

Gnite GSD, have a good one man.
Gotta say, this one has sure grown on me.
g’nite gregb
excellent (and crappy) news et – good thing you had a backup
Had to be a fly on the wall, eh? What do you think Parnell’s chances are? Isn’t Young still running, too?
Yes!!!
Maybe a little too much division on our candidates? We have one guy around town who’s far too important and smart for his shirt.
nite, GSD…
I haven’t seen David Lindley in years. Always a good show.
Aloha, GSD!
he did not mention that – just that he was taking a break
A grim anniversary for grim times.
My Lai massacre 40 years ago.
Anyone wanna guess why Rev. Wright is still pissed off?

jayt- oh dear, I don’t agree with you on that at all.
The David Lindley version sounds like it was make by the Kinks, or sumpin.
Night all.

40 years ago. dayam
Klien is on NOW, now…!
RBG- that is a GREAT find!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have more faith in that possibility than I; if there’s a hereafter, ain’t no amount of remorse gonna wash that man’s soul clean. If you meant “haunted” as in by the MSM, it’ll be too bloody little, too bloody late. :-(
ET!! Great hope for Alaska and the rest of America. The dominos are all falling, huh?
He may have served a few years before My Lai.
Cheers, Greg. We’ll make it. I’m thinking the Bush supporters/enablers/crooks will wish they’d taken another route in life.
I don’t dig Wright’s preaching style one bit. I dislike preachers. I do however understand and appreciate, from the few sound bites I’ve heard, what he says.
I got my press credentials yesterday. When I went into the convention room this morning, one of the tables for my state congressional district was empty, so Dave Shurtleff, a reporter from public radio, and I set up our laptops on it. Soon latecomers from the district came to sit there. I introduced myself as the secretary for district 13, which I am – for the Democrats.
I had several good talks over the course of the morning with old friends who are Republicans, who were there. Had a nice, congenial, long talk with a Rabbi with whom I had a huge tussle about Rachel Corrie four years ago.
My Lai was an Army tragedy, not a Marine Corps one…
Oh, that too. *g
I am toast, five hours of sleep the past two days in a row, a week from hell at work and that insanely rowdy concert are all kicking my narrow little ass hard right now.
Peace to you all and good night!
The David Lindley version
The man’s an unknown treasure – enormously talented (The “Troll”) – was with Jackson Browne for many years…

Great news ET! Keep up the timely reporting, it is appreciated.
ET- great work, as ever- waving from the east coast!
And to think I knew you way back when. ;)
A lot of glum faces there, ET?
Night, Busted – be well.

Get some sleep, dude.
Here’s for Busted.
Something we can all relate to these days.
Late Late Nite dwellers – There have been a few duplicate comments, but a hard refresh in any open threads should resolve them.
Give her my best!
How’d ya end up in Hot Lanta, VG, and just in time for the blow too…?

introduced me to firedoglake back in the summer of 2005.
Ya know – I’ve thought and thought about it, and I can’t remember when I got here. Evidently (from something that Christy wrote a while back) right after she walked in the door…
he’s keeping a low profile from FDL for a while for a number of reasons…
BUT, he’s most certainly not staying off the Internet…
Glum faces and happy faces. Palin is amazing. Watch this video at Alaska Report during her speech. It is on the right hand sidebar. Don Young is the guy who is asleep.
Dude! Do you ever sleep? *g*
Good vibes to him! More chuckles than I can count.
This is from Nietzsche as well… I wear black all the time, have been since high school in NYC…
Sad to say, I live here. Came here for a prof job. Hard to move when you have University tenure. Saving grace is that John Lewis is my congressman.
Heh, RBG and Suz, pinpointed my first comment awhile back, IIRC, in Jan.’06…!
“she can not comment at the lake while at the base”
What’s up with that?
I remember starting to comment here a few months before the elections of 06. It’s been quite a long stretch for me here. It’s a wellspring of sanity for me here. And i get more accurate news than i’d get from my local tv station or paper.
I tend not to take breaks from the net, but i spend a day or two ignoring the poo flinging when i can. That’s usually when i immerse myself in the fun of my live action dramas and anime out of japan. Lately i’ve been having fun with the sheer sillyness of a few shows. ^_^ Giggling like a total loon is a good cure for the vitriol that crops up.
And we once again approach that portion of the program where I’m just entertaining myself.
Third-best bar-band ever: Billy and the Beaters…

just so we’re clear:
punaise is taking a break from FDL, period and NOT from politics in general or from the Internet. Lotsa sh*t has been going on here lately re: testy nerves…
uses the youth center on base computers is my understanding of it.
To lefty for the Army’s standards…! Bwhahaha…!
marry me
Yeah. I figured that, Biodun. Look forward to the master’s return. ^_^
Lewis is great! I put him in the ranks of Waxman, Conyers, Barbara Lee, Sheila Jackson Lee, etc…!
er, I already did…*g*…
really. That is a beautiful highlight of the public exposure the accountable will face.
Speaking of Waxman, Moyers is doing a segment on him…!
I have seen a lot of mentions in the past week or so about poo and poo flinging. I understand there was even a poo thread, although I did not read it. But I have not seen much that I would consider poo flinging. What are we talking about here? Have there been personal attacks, or is saying anything negative about someone else’s presidential candidate considered poo flinging? Can anyone enlighten me?
Have wondered the same thing myself….seems like donkey’s ears, doesn’t it? *g* Tried using the search thingie one time but it only seems to record your presence if you get a h/t or otherwise mention in the body of the post. And a thread record wouldn’t include the time you lurked.
poo flinging – x candidate sucks and if you support said candidate, you suck.
My candidate is teh awesome and yours is teh suck!
Oh, spit! Missed it. Care to share any of content?
Second best?
I believe, correct me if i am am wrong, poo is the manifestation of micro-partisanship. A war, if you will, between the neoliberal and progressive spheres of influence.
Moyers is interviewing him and they’re discussing Lurita Doan’s masterful performance…! *g*
I’m pretty sure i delurked during one of the Late Night DeLurk party threads that TRex held in 06. Definitely a lot of fun. *grin* But i spent a good month just observing before i spoke up, i think.
ummm, not that I’m sayin’ no, but I took about three months of grief for sayin’ the same thing, for the same reason, to wdd…
And don’t you wanna know who the second-best-ever bar-band is?
First is Sonia Dada…
I put up Sonia over at my place a week or two ago. Great forking band.
OK, just so I understand and do not inadvertently fling poo, if I mention my objections to the way that Candidate A’s campaign is (in my opinion unfairly) attacking Candidate B (whom I support), is that poo flinging, even though I do not say “Candidate A’s supporters suck”? Is it now FDL policy that nobody can say anything negative about Clinton or Obama, or their campaigns, even though they don’t personally attack that candidate’s supporters here? I would like to know, because if I see Candidate A’s campaign unfairly (in my opinion) attacking Candidate B, I might tend to mention it here, and think it worthy of discussion…is that bad?
They’ve now moved on to Halliburton/private contractors and Condi’s pathetic performance…
poo flinging is not disagreeing
poo flinging is personal attacks on other commenters based on who the other commenters are supporting or perceived to be supporting
civil disagreement is always encouraged at the lake neuro
Ta! Really irritated that the few hours sleep I managed to get included both the time slots he comes on here. Luvs me some Mr. Henry; Moyers must be having a great good time with him…..those are two peas from the same pod. *g*
My impression of what constitutes “poo” is when accusations about a candidate cross the boundary were you seek to incite that candidates supporters to take vitriolic offense at your words…
There’s a smell test.
poo flinging is calling clinton supporters clintonistas and obama supporters obamabots.
think concern troll neuro – hope that helps
Try this link…
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/index-flash.html
I, myself, cannot truly speak to FLDs “policy.” Personally I find the internecine an obstruction the FDL value. Daily evaluation and critique of the people representation and education therein is why I value FDL. I can only speak for myself.
heh. My best friend and I went to a show one time with a couple of girls, where Southside Johnny was second-billed to (somebody – don’t really remember who). He and I went to hear Johnny – girls were immensely pissed when we both pretty much blew off the headliner and did some other stuff…
great choice…
Thanks, Suzanne and Newton. That is helpful. I don’t think I will have any trouble with that standard.
Good nite, folks.

Dial-up, darlin’. :-( But bless your heart (and that’s using the *positive* Southern meaning) for jogging my memory that they *do* post a transcript.
Btw, I hate it that that wonderful expression has come to have two totally opposite possible meanings to the point that one actually has to spell it out. Downside of internet interaction.
Well if this goes on to long I can see a late late post in the future titled..
Punaise Come Home!
G’ nite firedogss

Committee on Armed Services is a committee of the United States Senate empowered with legislative oversight of the nation’s military, including the Department of Defense, military research and development, nuclear energy (as pertaining to national security), benefits for members of the military, the Selective Service System and other matters related to defense policy. The Armed Services Committee was created as a result of the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946 following U.S. victory in the Second World War. It merged the responsibilities of the Committee on Naval Affairs (established in 1816) and the Committee on Military Affairs (also established in 1816). Considered one of the most powerful Senate committees, its broad mandate allowed it to report some of the most extensive and revolutionary legislation during the Cold War years, including the National

Attaturk could be construed as Late, late, late, that or, Early, early, early…
At the core of the investigation was the contention by two former plant managers that Kevlar woven at Sioux failed to meet the government’s “critical” minimum standard of 35 by 35 threads a square inch. When properly woven, Kevlar, a polymer thread made by Dupont, is stronger than steel, and able to deflect shrapnel and some bullets. Government regulations call for rejecting Kevlar below the 35-by-35 standard. The company “was underweaving,” [The United States attorney for North Dakota, Drew H.] Wrigley said. “That is undebatable,” he said. The factory’s own inspection records often showed weaves of 34 by 34 threads or as low as 32 by 34 and 33 by 34. Looms were “always set for 34 by 34, always,” said Jeff Kenner, who operated and repaired the looms and oversaw crews on all three shifts.
CREW requested congressional investigations when the Times article first appeared, on Feb. 6, but the group said neither committee has replied to them.
http://rawstory.com/news/2008/….._0228.html
Ok what is the hold up? I want to know just how much weaker a helmet is with a 34, 33 or 32 thread count is? Is it 1% weaker as the thread count decreases? What is the ratio of helmet protection and thread count? Does this mean that with a better helmet some of our solders might not be dead or disabled? THIS VOTER WANTS TO KNOW.
lol, tru :)
been mia
Well, there is them… but my more immediate concern is not screwing up any relationships I might have with people at the Lake. You’ve no idea of the amount of time I’ve spent twisting in the wind before hittin’ that submit button. Yes, rewrite; no, rewrite; maybe, rewrite. *g*
yo, TCU – how are ya?
*DAMN*, that was good – had to watch it twice.
There ya go again… How come I always get picked on… Can you find jayt’s or waccamaw’s? Hmmm… 8-P
Looks like Waxman is on a short leash with regard to environmental rules on California smog. This could get interesting!
I think it’s a common experience here.
yes they do.
Yep, and RBG reminds us all the time to think…! *g*
Loo Hoo – don’t you get the feeling that that whack-job head of EPA, Johnson, is about 15 minutes from having to resign?
He’s lied to Boxer’s committee relentlessly in the past month, and contradictory documents are turning up…
thought, often times, is subjective.
Think about it like fiberglass, because the helmets are basically laminated layers of Kevlar… If they are underweaving it does have an impact on the survivability…
That would be a wonderful title! But I keep asking about lolo. Anyone remember lolo? She was the queen of the zed when zed was it. She was ill, and I just want to say that if she has gotten too ill to be with us, BEST OF ALL, LOLO!
She was the one who encouraged me to change my name to Loo Hoo about a year ago. If you lurk, lolo, love ya!
My take on the most interesting political speech I’ve ever witnessed in Alaska.
o hell yeah! hello deregulation!
I was largely on radio silence when I hit The Lake. Had spent most of my time writing at the late lukery’s place. ummm, the place is late – luke’s fine.
What with the time difference between Australia and central Indiana, I could think about, write, look at, edit, add or subtract – until the comment was precisely as I wanted it to be.
Had a hard time fitting in here at the Lake, because things moved just too damned fast for me. Got over it eventually, and learned a different style of writing – short, quick, to the point and out.

Have wanted to ask for the longest time but refrained for fear of starting a round of “me too, me too.” Twistin’, twistin’, twistin’ here. LOL
Have also wondered whether the powers that be behind the scenes can identify lurkers by name or only numbers of people on-thread at the same time. Flat out blows my mind the few times one of the mods has mentioned the number of hits the Lake is getting at a specific point in time. Or maybe not remembering correctly how/when that sort of thing happened…
did she write that?

Wow, some blasts from the past, alank, EPU, -ck-, etc…!

“Elshaug said she was harassed by co-workers after questioning company procedures and feared for her safety.
“I was threatened my head would get cut off,” she said Thursday. Elshaug also said several gunshots were fired at the secluded trailer where she lives after coming forward with her allegations, but the harassment has since tapered off.
Attorney Andrew J. Campanelli, who is representing Elshaug and Kenner, said the Defense Department cannot be trusted to investigate Sioux; he noted that several DoD documents went missing after the Pentagon learned that as many as 2.2 million helmets were produced with inadequate kevlar.”
I can understand not trusting the Defense Dept under Republican control but when are the Democrats going to investigate this? Death threats to whistle blowers seems like something you would want to investigate… before letting a new contract for more helmets go through.
“Sioux Manufacturing paid $2 million to settle the whistleblower’s law suit, but just before the settlement was reached, the company received another $74 million government contract, according to the Times. The company has released a lengthy rebuttal of the article.”
A $74 million reward for what should have resulted in the company being banned from all government contracts shows that under the GOP or Dems where’s mine is more important than the troops.
Yes, of course I do, and so do the rest of the sane people in this country. But there sits Lorita Doan. How can this be explained? Guess we’re all just waiting for Clinton or Obama and a respectable congress. Then these liars and cheats will be given their just deserts.
I liked your closing anecdote, ET! Poor old Don…!
I remember that I read *something* on this site, walking into work (always an hour or two before the place actually opened – coffee needed, ya know) with an incredibly *brilliant* thought that I just had to get posted. So I only lurked for about a week.
(and ok, so maybe it *wasn’t* all that brilliant)
“Think about it like fiberglass, because the helmets are basically laminated layers of Kevlar… If they are underweaving it does have an impact on the survivability…”
That is what we need hearings for! John McCain was on the Senate Armed Forces Committee but was he asleep? Of course without hearings we are as bad as the GOP!

WASHINGTON – Dozens of U.S. troops in Iraq fell sick at bases using “unmonitored and potentially unsafe” water supplied by the military and a contractor once owned by Vice President Dick Cheney’s former company, the Pentagon’s internal watchdog says.
A report obtained by The Associated Press said soldiers experienced skin abscesses, cellulitis, skin infections, diarrhea and other illnesses after using discolored, smelly water for personal hygiene and laundry at five U.S. military sites in Iraq.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/…..9480.story
The Senate Armed Forces committee has a subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support I’m wondering who is managing this war? Bad helmets cause death or injury. Bad water can cause the same after all if a solder is sick from drinking bad water maybe he or she don’t react as fast as normal when they hear gunshots and don’t duck in time.

RRRRRRAAAAAWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!111
I typed my name, firedog lake, and the text of my first comment as best I could remember it on the google.
It worked…eventually.
How can we win a war if we don’t give the troops helmets that work or if we give them bad water that makes them sick? Lassie fair economics letting the invisible hand of the market run things is not working for our economic policy.
Trying to run a war with freemarket contractors who care more about making a Buck than our troops might be the reason the Surge is not working. How many solders have been hurt, permanently injured, or killed by these helmets?
How many sick days did our solders take because of bad water? How many solders who were sick but went to work anyway got hurt or killed because thanks to KBR’s water they were not 100% and might not have gotten hurt or killed if they were 100%?
Its hard to estimate these numbers but we should be asking these questions!

Geez, TCU! Now my students are wanting me to start every day with “Let’s get it Started in Here.
I started this….
The body armor contracting is also under scrutiny, they fielded inferior products under a no-bid contract that was twice the cost of a far superior body armor, Dragon Skin… It’s completely despicable what these thieves are doing…! 8-(
See there is more smelly contracts! The Democrats could make C-Span must watch TV for every military family before election day! We could start every day of hearings with a comment about how most of these contracting violations occurred when The Republicans had control of the Senate but for some reason NOTHING WAS DONE?
John McCain would have plenty of explaining to do!
Hey, I’m on Robert Hamilton’s campaign staff, working to unseat Darrell Issa. It’s not easy, but it’s possible.
BLUE CHEESE DRESSING from: Sacred Heart Cathedral
Gallup, NM
8 oz. sour cream – approx. 1 C.
1/3 C olive oil
1 1/2 t. dry mustard
1/4 t. ground pepper
1/4 C. lemon juice (approx. 1 med. lemon)
1/4 lb. Roqueford or blue cheese (crumbled)
Combine ingredients & beat well. Add cheese last.
Keeps well in frigerator.
You can up the mustard and/or cheese a wee tad if you’re so inclined once you’ve tasted. Have absolutely no idea where I crossed paths with it given the source. *g* Caution: it does not the frig durability of a commercial dressing but, if you like it, it won’t last long enough to be concerned about that. :-) Oh, yeah…I use fresh lemon vs. the bottled stuff.
TCU @ 332 -
Well, that does rather explain the lack of hearings, doesn’t it?
Why you got stuff on Daniel Akaka a reason why he is not doing hearings?

We can blame the war profiteers for why we are still losing the war. Well that and not listening to General Eric Shinseki about how many troops we would need.
The last thing I’m trying to do is steering you away from the feed back you get here. Your posts about send me into turrets. Consolidate your brilliant posts, as a scratch pad if you will, to add the much needed discourse.
I want somebody in the Press to ask John McCain how he plans to win the war? How much and how soon plus who and how will pay for the war? Plus if he had a plan for victory why didn’t he tell anyone? Every Blogger, Commentor etc who has been against the war has been telling everyone on the net that this war was going to be a disaster and so far we have been RIGHT! Why can’t John tell us his secret plan?
Thanks I’ll think about it my brother is more into the tech side than I am I’ll talk to him.
OMG, who gave us that blast from the past on FDL postings? Was it RGB? Cuz that was so fun!
lmao, when did cain come out witht a secret plan?
yeah, yeah, just do it!
Sorry I was being Snarky I was making a joke about Tricky Dick’s secret plan to win the war and how he ran and won the presidential election. When McCain talks about wining in Iraq I keep waiting for him to announce a “secret plan ” to win the war “peace with honor”? Or something like that, I worry that the American people might fall for it….again!
After all the McCain talking point of 100 years of war did not go over well he needs to get better material.
np, i caught the snark, but thought it would be wise to expand upon the statement/idea.
Are you sure for positive that we *could* have ever won it even with the modifications you mention….AND given the nature of the region? Long away and far I might have believed that but am really not certain anymore. If one American citizen has that troubling thought, what does it say about all the people around the world and, more importantly, their leaders? Geeze, just look at the news in the last 24 with several SA leaders basically telling boosh to go cheney himself. Wonder if his hench-people have clued him onto that news yet? Between that sorta thing and the FISA vote, those dogs better stay out of his way this weekend.

Is it Just Me, or did SNL change this week’s musical guest mid-week?
Thought I saw promos with “magic high-five!” punchline that said Janet Jackson was the musical guest. Now there’s a new one with Mariah Carey leaning on the guy who is hosting…
Or, did it come to me in a dream!~?
I think that that is very important distinction to highlight. The “Surge” is a failed policy. The fact that the “Surge”, as a policy, has failed is different from the individuals in the field doing the job. Insufficient equipment only compounds a failed policy.
I don’t think we could have won the war even if we had done everything right. But there was no way we could have won after all the mistakes we made so that question is academic. I think that after all the mistakes we have made wining the war has become even harder than before because we have made things worse.
and what do tell the individuals that have been awarded metals on, the lie, of the Global War On Terror.
It’s more than the 4,000 dead
3/13/2008 – A recent meeting of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Center for Peace and Justice included an interesting discussion about sponsoring a demonstration against the Iraq War when the number of American military dead reached 4,000. (As I submit this column, the number is 3984; eight more were killed this week.)
Not everyone was in favor of such a demonstration, which would both honor the fallen and protest the war. Some argued that spot-lighting the 4000 dead would distract us from the horrific number of our wounded.
Better body armor, improved technology and speedier medical treatment mean that many soldiers survive wounds in Iraq that in past wars would have been fatal. Last year the Department of Defense using an especially narrow definition reported that 28,000 troops were wounded in Iraq. The actual number now is closer to 36,000.
http://www.observertoday.com/a…..leID=19871
According to government statistics, in the American Civil War there were 1.7 wounded for every soldier killed, in the Second World War 2.3 wounded for every death, in Vietnam 3.2 for every fatality. Now In Iraq the wounded-to-killed ratio is about 9 to 1. Fortunately more of our wounded are surviving, but this has brought with it many unforeseen problems.
These wounds are often horribly serious. Some are devastating. They include multiple amputations, facial disfiguration, brain damage and burns. The White House and Veterans Administration did not anticipate the severity of the wounds or the increase in the number of wounded, as the nation clearly saw last year in the shameful treatment of wounded veterans at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The VA has shown itself ill equipped to provide these veterans the medical care they deserve.
“The Human Cost of the War in Iraq,” reported 655,000 Iraqis have lost their lives through violence and health factors directly related to the war. More than a year later that number is significantly higher. According to other sources the number of Iraqi dead is in the millions.
655,000 dead a few million still each dead person had a Mother and Father who cared about them friends and relatives each death just makes the Iraqi’s hate us more. After a certain number of deaths relative to the size of the population you would have to expect that nobody wants us there anymore.
I am suspicious of any poll of Iraq’s that says that we have any support.
what happened to everybody?
They did their job. I blame Bush for any warcrimes!
The war crimes are already there. How does our government make amends to the people?
Sorry about my #360. I got 30 new comments as soon as I sent that. Wonder why my little new comment thingy isn’t working.

Solders should get the same healthcare that is keeping Darth alive. Ignoring this cost in the budget projections is the same as wishing our solders would just die.
We need a plan to help them, we need to set aside some money to do this and if the no tax GOP wants to screw the solders on healthcare by ignoring the cost, well this is one time that we have to take a stand!
Otherwise why be a Democrat if we don’t care about people?
After we get out of Iraq they have a civil war once things have settled down we offer whomever is in charge money, food, doctors whatever they need.
But first I think we have to stop killing people. We have messed up Iraq so much I think we hurt Iraqi’s more by trying to keep the peace. Also we offer them solar power so they don’t burn oil for power anymore and that way more oil hits the market and thus lowers the price of oil.
We should offer this to Iran and all the oil producing countries in exchange for their giving up Nukes, but Darth would rather have a war.
Ito: At that time, I got hold of an internal document of Britain’s Ministry of Finance in London. In it I discovered that Japanese corporations were floating massive loans based on warrant bonds–effectively with negative interest rates–which they used to obtain funds to invest in stocks and real estate. In the midst of the recession, these people were obtaining funds by taking advantage of the strong yen; I wrote about the dangers of that situation, and that they should have been doing the opposite. The entire analysis was based on this British Ministry of Finance document I happened to come across. Such information was not available in Japan at the time.
Hoshino: Around that period, as an economic bureaucrat I also interviewed executives of city banks on the financial situation; they often responded that lenders were becoming increasingly few, and that major corporations no longer borrowed money from banks. Major companies were obtaining funds by means of warrant bonds and other measures. Therefore banks had to resort to maneuvers similar to those of consumer credit businesses, such as handling housing and individual loans, for survival. These practices were spread among non-banks and thereby instigated the so-called bubble economy from the bottom up.
Ito:

The Collapse of the Japanese economy in the 90’s seems to have some parallels to what is going on today.
Thank you. I sent this on to the Blue Dogs.
”In the midst of the recession, these people were obtaining funds by taking advantage of the strong yen;”
We had a strong dollar pre 9/11 when the market crashed then the Federal Reserve lowered interest rates some economic commentators said effectively to zero.
”effectively with negative interest rates–which they used to obtain funds to invest in stocks and real estate.”
Which reminds me of all the talk about the Bush economy which Bobo Brooks used to say Bush never got credit for, perhaps because the dollar was starting to go down and wages were not keeping up?
We already had the bush bubble in stocks and now housing is going down.
Cool!
fratricide is more like it.
If you listened to boosh’s speech yesterday, do you remember him making some comment about strong support for foreign investment in this country? Am I wrong in considering all the money they’ve lent us a form of investment? (total economic dummy here, as you can tell) The thought of the debt he’s run up for this country is enough to make me crawl under the bed and never come out again.
“I believe that an experiment was carried out by the Japanese economy in the 1990s, and that the results of that experiment should be transmitted to the rest of the world.
First, interest rates shifted drastically. One view on interest rates insists that when rates decline, corporations take out loans for investment, driving the economy to accelerate. This theory emphasizes the effect of interest rates on investment, but it was convincingly disproved by a survey at Oxford in the late 1930s. A field survey by Japan’s Economic Planning Agency has produced similar results. Therefore, it was clear that the 1990s policy of lowering interest rates to stimulate the economy was ineffective. The neoclassical school, however, claimed that lower interest rates invite economic recovery, which caused the extremely low interest rates.
The other problem concerns the neoclassical savings curve, which shows that people stop saving as interest rates decline. The current edition of Samuelson’s Economics and other new textbooks all presume that consumers spend all their income for consumption. But in reality, they also save some of their income. Consumer selection theory is a hypothesis that is not even remotely in accord with reality. American neoclassical textbooks are nothing more than a delusion constructed on the foundations of wrong-headed assumptions. John Maynard Keynes described those assumptions as being an empty box that contains nothing. The reality in Japan, I think, revealed this to the world for the first time. According to neoclassical theory, the current extremely low interest rate in Japan should improve the propensity to consume and thus revive the economy. On the contrary, people are saving more and spending less. This is why I am insisting that economics textbooks are wrong. “
http://www.nira.go.jp/publ/rev…..round.html
I find it interesting that so much of what happened to Japan in the 1990’s applies today?
“I believe that an experiment was carried out by the Japanese economy in the 1990s, and that the results of that experiment should be transmitted to the rest of the world.”
Seems like schools of economics tried to prove their theories in Japan in the 1990’s and then tried the same thing here with the same results!
I think your observation is polite.
IANAE [ I am not an economists ]
Well of course not, how many of you should we expect there to be???
“foreign investment ” in our companies means that thanks to a weak dollar foreigners think our companies are a cheap buy. I have to agree except for our hedgefunds, banks and anything related to housing they are all going down much more.
But money loaned to the Federal Reserve by foreigners purchase of Treasury Bills? Well sure it keeps the government running but this is debt.
Debt as Milton Friedman said is a “tax deferred with interest” We have so much debt that just paying the interest never mind the principle is a big expense.
I think I will wait until we get some real numbers on the wars cost and how much it adds to the national debt before I comment further on that.
Still it would have been cheaper to raise taxes and pay for the war as we went rather than pay interest. Which we could have done if only Bush had been right about the war’s cost and length.
Nobody would have voted for war if we knew then that the cost would be so much.
nem’s going to bed, l8rs.
night tw3k
If you have a question ask we are all here to learn from each other. 3 years of reading the Financial Times and the Investors Business Daily plus econ 101 are my only credentials.
I used to deliver newspapers.
“One view on interest rates insists that when rates decline, corporations take out loans for investment, driving the economy to accelerate.”
Funny this is exactly what Kramer screams about all the time when Helicopter Ben (head of the Federal Reserve ) does not lower interest rates and the market goes down.
Granted we need lower interest rates to keep the market at its artificially high prices, but by doing so we are just making things worse in the long run.
Remember it took the Japanese about 10 years to get out of their crisis.
Also its funny that for years now there has been very little reinvestment of profits by big business back into their companies with equipment purchases to become more efficient and profitable.
Which is something all the GOP economist said would happen and would help the economy.
Instead we got speculation on stocks and housing.
Good Night tw3k I’m glad I caught you haven’t seen you here on the nightside in a while:)
Ta, I actually sorta understand most of that. :-) Definitely am not sure about the
part tho’. Given the number of people in this country who were out for blood revenge after 9/11, the price could be double what Steglitz (sp?) and others are projecting and they would have screamed, “Damn the cost, and full speed ahead!” My opinion of the majority of the population has taken a complete nosedive in the past eight years.
From small acorns grow very large trees. *g*
Is economic survival possible with a fucking idiot at the helm? I have been watching yesterdays speech and it is clear that either our president is demented or he has no concept of actual sound economic policy. Not sure which. He speaks as though our economy and our national security are 2 different things. If you think about it for more than a few seconds it is obvious that a strong economy is the only way to be truly secure.
what up
Morning Raven.
I haven’t seen Chimpy’s speech yet, but if this is any indication, the man just gets worse and worse!
Hi, Raven -
How’s the lady pup doing these days? Have you been able to get the foot chewing under any kind of control?
Since you’re physically closer, any news updates on the storm in Atlanta?
Morning Pups.
Raven, Are you watching the weather?
Foot Chewing?
or
Foot Chewing?
they would have screamed, “Damn the cost, and full speed ahead!”
Sure if only we had gone after Osama in Pakistan but we did not.
Raven may not be but I am here and it is snowing… again. Enough is enough I say.
Used the FISA passage as an excuse for long and hard partying last night.
With the economy in the tank it is damn lucky we did not have the “privatization” of Soc. Sec. passed or we would be in a lot worse position than now.
No wonder the market tanked after that “speech”. I swear the man is an idiot. Almost like there is a synaptic disconnect.
Yeah, that swell idea of putting the social security money in the stock market just looks wiser by the day, doesn’t it.
Hi Raven I did some comments on the war starting at 260
I have on the local news and there is a pretty nasty storm moving towards Athens.
The second but her own, unfortunately. (Not sure if you’ve crossed paths with Raven the times he’s talked about her.)

Won’t keep the republics from continuing to push the idea. And btw, have you noticed the increasing use of the word “democrate”, especially by thug pols? Why don’t the dims start using the term “republics”?
Why don’t the dims start using the term “republics”?
We have, it pisses them off. A lot of fun.
Where ’bouts you, if you don’t mind saying?
Bloggers and those who read them, yes; but anybody who shows up on the TV that you can think of?
Right now the storm is just to the west of Athens. They had issued a tornado warning but it’s been canceled. It looks like it will be just strong winds and hail.
The Bear Stearns 85 old investment bank bailout could only be legal if an investment bank held the transaction (don’t ask).
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03…..ref=slogin
For 2 decades we have been off of regulation and the financial instruments have produced huge risk in the economic system “laisez faire” policy is caveat emptor. Now the house of cards is crumbling and taxpayers are having to shoulder some of the risk. $200 billion in loans secured by the “bad paper sub-prime mortgagges (to help out the investment bank.
This is a credit crisis. The leveraged risk up to 30 to 1 security per dollars has rotted the financial market.
Sarbanes-Oxley was repealed. The protections put in by FDR have been removed.
The Criminal-in-charge previously referred to as the the Prezident has appointed regulators that come from industry who are not regulating. The damage is done. Investment bank CEO have made billions and we are paying.
Of course not.
Correction first line should be commercial banks…Bear is an investment bank. They are going around all laws to save their finacial gang-banging cronys. The corruption is just horrendous. This may put retirement fundsd at risk.
If you think about it for more than a few seconds it is obvious that a strong economy is the only way to be truly secure.
Mr. Gotoda, Chief Cabinet Secretary at the time. He was worried that the inequality produced by land price hikes of that magnitude would invite rioting, and began to tighten the money supply. If only we had started earlier, when you first pointed out the problem….
http://www.nira.go.jp/publ/rev…..round.html
My bold
I think we have to raise interest rates let a few banks and hedgefunds fail as people move their money to more productive parts of the economy
“Because of the low interest rate, pension funds are all performing miserably. Japan’s welfare policy is about to fall apart; the kosei nenkin plan (the government-managed pension plan for corporate employees), labor union pension plans, and corporate pension plans are all collapsing. If we consider the loss we are suffering, it is best to admit that the benefit of the low interest rate policy was negative. I am not saying that high interest rates are better, but I do want to point out that limits exist. “
Our Pension funds invested in banks and hedgefunds are the next shoe to drop.
Why is Socialism only good for the wealthy?
No shit, me and the pups were having coffee and headed for home just before that latest storm rolled through. When I got home mrs raven was in the closet on her crutches!
Japan during their Decade long crisis kept a lot of non performing loans on the books to protect big business and banks…at the expense of the little people and the economy for ten years.
This situation only ended when Japan finally let some of these loans go bad and raised interest rates.
Now what I want to know is who told Helicopter Ben and Bush that repeating Japan’s mistakes was a good idea?
Companies too big to fail ya right they are going to fail anyway, stopgap revolving 28 day loans to the banks are just that stop gaps.
Unless the Fed hopes that by waiting longer than the 10 years the Japanese waited might give these companies a chance somehow to make good on the loans AND THE EXPECTED INTEREST I HOPE THE FED IS CHARGING.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Herbert today. La Collins’ column is titled “George Speaks, Badly,” and she says we’re really past expecting anything much, but in times of crisis you would like to at least believe your leader has the capacity to pretend he’s in control. However, alas, we have George… Mr. Herbert wrote on “The Winds of Albany,” and says that it would have required a leap of the imagination for a teenager in a shipping department in the 1940s to believe that his child would someday become governor of New York.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I picked up some wonderful apple turnovers at the bakery yesterday. Have a wonderful day.
Our Pension funds invested in banks and hedge funds are the next shoe to drop.
Coupled with municipal investments in sub-primes and the fact that bond auctions are beginning to fail, not only is the lower interest rate not helping it is accelerating to death spiral. A lower interest rate is a short term band aid for a liquidity problem. I maintain we have a solvency problem. Everybody running around playing asset, asses who’s got an asset, but they have sold all the assets.
I have a real problem with the transfer of risk to we the people. HUGE profits have been taken by a very few and now we are expected to pay for it. Again.
Just who taught Helicopter Ben and our Harvard MBA President economics? The Chicago school of economics people?
That Dark Tower of Academia which is responsible for more crap economic ideas than Lyndon LaRouche and Ron Paul put together needs a Hobbit with a Ring!
Several of the pups have been waiting to hear from you. Glad that you are home safely.
Ya get the debt under control by stopping spending on a war is the first step. Then we rebuild America to stimulate the economy funny how the GOP is willing to borrow millions for war but not a penny to help people. Then we pay down the debt.
I thinks we have a plan:)
Some of those failures have begun, haven’t they? Iirc, there was a recent article about a bank to which it had already happened, or shortly expected to. There’s definitely a county in which Birmington, AL (iirc) is located that’s about to go under due to risky investments (unfortunately, it’s apparently a dim who had a lot of control over that kind of decision). Thank Dog I decided to take early SS….a few months of it may be all I ever see.
The pix coming out of Atlanta are pretty amazing. If the Bama/MSU game had not gone in to overtime there would have been many many people out on th street when it hit last night. . .damn.
Speaking of money…further proof the DLCers, of which the Clintons are leaders and founders, do not care at all about the DemocratIC Party and what it stands for:

Some of Hillary’s top fundraisers want their money back from the DNC if FL doesn’t get to seat delegates. Fine, get the hell outta here. It’s about time we started purging the Party of the infiltrators.
Obama is dwarfing their numbers in terms of fundraising, and in addition to the 50 State Strategy, we have no need for their fake “support.” I’ve felt for years the DLC was developed to keep us Liberals from doing anything too radical. These actions of Clinton backers is just further proof.
Morning!
I can’t believe we just took on Bear Stearns’ liability. “rewarding bad behavior”
LOL. Lucky me, my coffee was still brewing.
Given that Helicopter Ben is trying and failing just means that he is not as good as the Japanese were at stalling the crisis but that does not mean he should get credit for stuff that happens despite his best efforts.
I think SS should be safe as long as we don’t privatize it and invest it in the market.
I saw that… …maybe if she doesn’t get the nomination there is a spot for her on the old Connecticut for Lieberman party.
Oh crap. Forget I said that. I am done with candidate wars.
Ito: Yes. In the early 1990s, when the low interest rate policy was introduced, I told several policy-makers at the Ministry of Finance that the policy might be wrong. They responded that it would increase the income of banks, and that the 1 percent increase in the difference between the loan interest rate and the savings rate would bring an extra 4 trillion yen to the banks. From the extra income, 2 trillion yen would be used to redeem bad loans, and the other 2 trillion would cover the loss of interest. This is an issue of income distribution.

This sounds exactly like Helicopter Ben’s reasoning too bad it didn’t work for Japan.
