What a dilemma for the wingnuts.
After months of hard work building the case that Hussein al-Osama is some kind of stealth Islamic Raymond Shaw, someone at ABC News dug up a five-year old sermon Jeremiah Wright gave in which he said, "God damn America."
And like the Pavlovian simpletons they are, the wingnuts have temporarily abandoned the "Osama al-Hussein" storyline and pivoted right into "Obama’s an angry black militant."
It goes without saying that the crowd which for the past 30 years has embraced a bunch of theocratic, flatearther, homophobic, snake-handling, anti-Catholic, anti-woman, anti-science, anti-everyone-but-white-American-evangelicals— and whose nominee currently seeks their approval and endorsement — has absolutely no moral standing whatseover to object to anyone else’s inflammatory religious rhetoric. Ever. Period.
But Obama’s response today was perfect:
Obviously, I disagree with that. Here is what happens when you just cherry-pick statements from a guy who had a 40-year career as a pastor. There are times when people say things that are just wrong. But I think it’s important to judge me on what I’ve said in the past and what I believe.
But if the wingnuts really want to play this guilt-by-association game, they’ll lose. We’ve got lots more ammo.

BT!
They are definitely anxious to play.
Anyone have any good pro Obama slogans?
http://freewayblogger.blogspot…..cisco.html
I’m in San Francisco now.
“…a bunch of theocratic, flatearther, homophobic, snake-handling, anti-Catholic, anti-woman, anti-science, anti-everyone-but-white-American-evangelicals…”
Ah, poetry. *g*
BT!!!! You tell them. True, John McStain is picking up wackadoodles left and right. If the right wants to engage in this fight, bring it!!!!!
All hail Blue Texan!
Pavlovian simpletons…LOVE IT BT! Gotta add the MSM (particularly Moanin’ Schmoe) to that group.
Just TeddySanFran’s F
famous saying,
============
HAD ENOUGH?!
============
Amen, BT.
How about….
Obama…I’m caught up in the concept.
Nice. I hope my kids grow up to be freewaybloggers someday.
BTW, I’m partial to Kurt V. and Steven W.
Ooh! Finally an Obama thread. Kin I ask a question?
Does anybody see a side effect for Sen. Obama’s campaign now that New York is going to have a legally blind man of color as governor? Won’t that be like a blocker clearing the downfield for Obama’s run?
“Ooh! Finally an Obama thread.”
Yeah, maybe JulieL will join in.
oooh my likey, off to make a tshirt
How was your trip? Did you see the world and stand up for America?
I, myself, don’t see the connection. Maybe someone else sees it otherwise?
I am half Catholic (my late mother) and 1/2 Southern Baptist (my late father). I was baptised into both churches. And I support Senator Obama to be our next president and I don’t care if he’s a Baptist, a Catholic, a Hindu, a Muslim, or a Jew.
How long will it be before Ferraro tells us that Patterson is lucky to be blind
These smear tactics by certain Democrats against Sen. Obama disgruntle me.
Has he used his “blindness effectively?”
I’ve been in Mexico off and on since January working on a novel, hopefully to be featured in the FDL book club one of these days. It’s about… can you guess? a guy who puts signs on freeways. Hilarious so far.
black and blind
cool
Okay, we’ve easily got more ammo. But MSM is very unlikely to pick up that side of the story. They’re getting most of their information from McBush’s flacks and treating it like gospel.
I don’t want that fight. We’ve got ammo, but nothing to shoot it with.
Boxturtle (Bush would have been impeached if MSM had followed the wiretapping like they followed Monica)
Hmmmmm doubley lucky
I thought this would be one of the next headlines. His preacher is no shrinking flower and bigots could have a field day. Black preaching is a bit more colorful in all ways than boring white preaching (from an old white woman feminist Obama supporter). It is a wonderful experience to attend.
BTW, if you haven’t yet, go read the NYT article on Obama’s Mother through friends and his Indonesian half-sister’s eyes who has really been in the shadows. You will really “get” Obama even more. His Mom was NOT Dorothy from Kansas since home was where her humanitarian passions took her.
No one thinks Hill and co. ain’t eatin this shit up huh?
and being that he is about to be sworn in as gov, I would say he has used it effectively
I read that this morning and immediately emailed some people with the story. Explains a lot.
Kinda depends on whether that blind, black Governor supports the Senator from his own state or not, doesn’t it?
She can eat it up allshe wants but being that she just ate crow in front a group of black news reporters (where she apologized for Ferraro’s remarks) I don’t think she wants to enter into what could be concieved as race baiting again (at least not so soon)
Oooooh, that’s the question of the hour.
I’m sure she’s enjoying it, but I agree with wobblybits, she’d be stupid to try to amplify on it. She’ not that dumb. Is she?
I’ll buy one. Cheers to you!
Ruthless, but NOT stupid.
/mode grump
We’re doing it even here. Reading the comments, the question seems to be will the new Gov support Obama because he’s black or Hillary because she’s from his state.
Perhaps he’ll look at their positions and their abilities and decide based on that.
Boxturtle (/mode nogrump)
Terrorist.
I do not think Senator Clinton has done the Democratic party proud. Most importantly perhaps, she has soiled herself with her dirty trickster campaign tactics against Senator Obama.
To be fair, I don’t know anyone-Republican or Democrat, who remotely believes the Obama/Muslim thing. The rare ones who have heard about it think it’s funny in it’s stupidity.
Specially if he keeps up the great one-liners!
Where are you Berkeley?
Can the fan club order early?
I suspect you’re right, so we’ve got to be ready. If they do, St. McCain should have to answer every day whether he believes Jesus is returning to Israel to fight the invading Chinese and Russian armies.
A right winger told me this morning that Ferraro got fired (for making a remark that was obviously true, he opined) from the Hillary campaign. I said that I hadn’t heard that Ferraro got fired. I shared with the winger Obama’s response – paraphrasing, I said that Obama felt that most Americans were of the opinion that being black and having a Muslim name were not advantageous for a guy running for president.
I think having David Paterson in office is not only a great boon to NYS (I am a HUGE Paterson fan), but will help Obama.
Paterson does not have Obam’s hubris. Paterson has sweetness about him, and a quick wit and an inate ability to put people at ease. He is amazingly smart, very quick on the uptake, yet always self depricating (but in a good way. Paterson is nobody’s doormat.) He has perfected the art of ggetting what he wants with Honey rather than vinager.
As a church-going Catholic, does this mean I have to agree with everything the Pope says or just my parish priest? Please help.
The key word here is “should”.
I think you’re wrong here. That clip is going to send shivers up the spines of a lot of white people.
I didn’t find the clip on The Politico to be offensive, myself. I’m a middle-aged white gal, and it didn’t offend me. Nothing Wright said about white people and racism is disputable there, is it?
I would argue that Hillary has been called many names other than the old “n-word,” of course. Many bad bad names. But that is a different subject.
But the fact that I don’t find the guy offensive or “scary” is hardly the point. I’m not the audience for whom Fox News plays this kind of stuff. And that audience is going to lap it up.
I can also guarantee that my mother, who oddly enough voted for Obama in the primary, will be freaked out by it. My mother-in-law will be freaked out by it (although she would not have voted for Obama anyway).
I would not discount the “Obama is not a good American” and “Obama will only represent black people” drumbeat. It will only get worse, and many many people in this country will respond to it.
Central FL-Tampa Bay area. The vast majority of people I know are non-political, so they don’t even hear about it. Hell of a lot of paleo-publicans in this area, and they thought it was funny, but they didn’t believe it.
I wish I was in Berkeley.
Hey LHP!
How ya doing this afternoon?
hubris?? wow.just.wow
BAWAHAHA!
This sounds exactly like Charlie Crist in FL.
The big blue Democratic wave
National surge could provide party with new foundations in red states
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23630921/
I know people who believe it.
Facts just don’t work on these people. It worries me. When you have a whole lot of people who prefer to believe whispers, innuendos and lies, what kind of country do you live in?
Political rhetoric being what it is, this issue is likely to follow Obama for a while, but it really shouldn’t. Wright just used some inflammatory rhetoric to make a point about how little America seems to care about things it ought to care about. They aren’t Obama’s words, they’re someone else’s. It’s the Amanda Marcotte/John Edwards thing all over again – guilt by association, and not to much thought put into what reason they have for feeling guilty.
Have you seen the response of McCain’s campaign manager?
it will play to certain segments of the population but not all
rotflmaoo
Depends on what the Pope and the parish priest says, now doesn’t it? Are they in conflict?
Seriously, I may be a fallen away Catholic, but the priests and nuns who educated me basically told me to always follow my conscience. For all but sociopaths, conscience rules.
Everyone knows that the Pope sends out his marching orders, and Catholics are obliged to blindly obey.
Paterson endorse Hillary a long time ago.
But seeing him in office, being effective, makes it easier for the bigotry afflicted to rise above their prejudices by allowing them to have a mental picture of an excellent black chief executive.
B/c of all the Spitzer hoopla. paterson is likely to be a national story for quite awhile so the whole country will have a chance to catch on to what new Yorker’s alreay know about David.
a country full of bumkins.
One name for ya folks: Farrakan.
Kumbaya all you want about The One. He, like all humans…he is human right, has some skeletons in his closet. Not interested in the usual flame out with Obama fans but I will say this.
Connections with Farrakan will not play well in the GE.
And…
It’s just as wrong to denigrate Clinton for things she is not as it is to do so to Obama. If you cannot understand this hike over to CheetoLand. You’ll love the sexist lies and character assassination.
If you really truly think Clinton is a racist it’s time to put the Kool-Aide down.
If you really truly think Obama is more progressive than Clinton please explain Progressive Punch’s ‘Chips are Down’ ratings:
Obama 41st in the Senate
Clinton 24th
These Senators rate more progressive than Senator Obama:
Webb, Feinstein and Ben Nelson.
Last I looked the ’sphere was about facts not fiction. Kos, Bowers and others have done yeoman work to destroy that.
Will this site go along with that change in the paradigm?
Somehow I don’t doubt that there are Obama-haters who simultaneously hold both beliefs: that Obama is a “secret Muslim” and that he is a member of an “angry Black Christian” group.
Those robots on the original Star Trek would short-circuit from that kind of logical inconsistency.
Just as I thought bludgeoning Clinton for Ferraro’s remarks was uncalled for, I believe demanding Obama answer for his pastor’s remarks is not appropriate.
he has no connection to Farrakahn except that Farrakahn endorsed him; he didn’t court it, he didn’t ask for it…that is the connection
Hey Busted! Doing very well, and you?
You’re absolutely right, and they already have.
Local wingnut radio started out at 9am with it, and that leads right into Rush @noon, who I understand started with it yesterday.
I hope I’m wrong, but I think it’s gonna take a lot of push back to put this brushfire out.
You are asking here??
People with prejudices may learn something, but the bigots won’t. That’s why bigots are bigots.
I may be wrong, but I perceive Senator Obama to be a nice person.
Trust you gut.
apples and oranges (Wright isbn’t out there as a campaign supporter/surrogate peddling this bullshit. He said it in the past)
she deserved the bludgeoning
These Senators rate more progressive than Senator Obama:
Webb,
You are out of you mind, respectfully.
Is this a serious comment?
I perceive that as well. And I feel that he and I are more alike than Hillary and I. So I don’t get that “vote your gender” thing.
Ornery as ever! ;)
A Party that constantly worries worst case scenarios is setting itself up to lose.
People who weren’t going to vote for Obama anyway will obsess about it.
People inclined to vote for him, won’t switch unless the same words come out of his mouth.
McCain can be relieved because Hagee doesn’t matter much anymore.
How do you know what the connection is?
You there when they were schmoozin’ after the service. Get real about what you know and what you don’t.
I don’t know what the connection is but you’d better believe FAUX NOISE and McCain’s 527s will figure something out.
I personally am not disturbed by Farrakan. I don’t think he’s the devil just a very, with good reason, angry black man.
But…..
Goober in Georgia ain’t gonna see it that way.
I do not believe.
Keep drinking
Go look before you start in with the dumb ass personal attacks.
Lahoma is always telling me she sometimes thinks I think with my gut. ;0)
I am goober in Georgia
He added Parsley yesterday, who beleives that the U.S. was partly founded for the purpose of destroying the muslim religion
I perceive this as well, but I know you don’t get to be President of the US without stepping on some very powerful, ruthless people on the way, and the practice of doing so makes one into a powerful, ruthless person over time.
Or so it seems to me.
Its inhale :30 already?
I didn’t know Charlie Christ was a fan of David Paterson’s.
Look having people of color inpositions of power makes it easier for other people of color to attain power. Having more women in power makes it easier for other women to attain power.
It allows the unimaginative to SEE them in those terms.
The fact that a really smart, talented, sweet, competent guy is going to be a national news story while he takes on a high profile executive position in the government of an important state, can only help Obama.
David PAtterson is (or is becoming) a famous black chief executive. He has the brains, the talent and the chops to be a tremendously effective chief executive. How can that be bad for Obama?
Sorry, I forgot the emoticon for irony.
No you are not. If you were you’d be over at RedState.
Drink liberally, shit.
In case anyone hasn’t seen this already, this analysis of the candidates based on Myers-Briggs typology is interesting.
Just cause Farrakan endorses Obama doesn’t mean the reverse. Who the hell would Farrakan endorse? Hillary? McCain? This whole argument is just idiotic.
Tim Russert knew exactly what he was going to stir up with the Farrakan question. Pumpkinhead is a neocon lacky and a dickhead.
Hope you are having a great Friday. ;0)
tooooooooooooooooo funny
i agree. stirring up the wasp nest
I don’t know that Crist is a fan of Paterson’s, but your description of his style and manner sounded perfectly apt to me as a description of Crist, personality-wise.
I don’t think it is bad for Obama at all.
sorry, you know how I get when that Webb crap starts.
Gotta go now.
Don’t like my comments?
Tough.
Go check out Progressive Punch.
Study up on who Obama get’s his money from. Who his advisors are and what their perspectives are on the issues of the day.
I’ts not enough to ‘trust’.
I’ts not enough to ‘believe’.
And when Sinclair Lewis made his famous comment he didn’t specify whether the danger was coming from the Rigth or the Left.
I think that’s probably true.
you verrrrrrrrrrrrrrry fuuny fella
There are a lot of people at TPM handwringing over Wright’s sermon, like it was last week, not five years ago.
What are they going to be doing for the next seven months, as the corporate media digs up more ‘old news’ to throw at the Dems?
gfy
How many Black and White Church goers around the country will recognize these words from their Pastor? Looks like free advertising to me, to all those who would be afraid of Islam.
Btw, there was no racism in the clips, just inflammatory conclusions.
Hillary never been called the n word. probably, but even if she was ever called, would it have any effect?
White men run America? pretty much.
America Nuked more people than killed on 9/11? 10x more.
Did we bat an eye? No.
Did we support South Africa? Yes.
Sometimes the truth hurts.
Maybe our Pastors and Ministers and Priests are the only ones allowed anymore to speak up, then only if they are old.
They want no part in this. They know what it means for them.
Just a few years ago I would have walked across life coals for Senator Clinton to see her become our president.
OT, but two hacks on CNBC who interviewed the head of Bear Stearns (which is in meltdown today) earlier this week are trying to make the case that he didn’t lie to them when he said “All is well” when asked about the firm’s finances.
Right. On Wednesday it’s all good, on Friday the Federal Reserve is intervening to stop Bear Stearns from collapsing. And he didn’t know.
Right. And I’ve got Enron shares at a great price for anyone who believes that.
No, your wrong about that. Wright has a minor role in the campaign.
My position is that neither candidate should be held responsible for things said by minor players in their campaigns.
In fact, I didn’t think the woman that called Hillary a monster should have had to resign.
This gotcha Russert sort of crap doesn’t is a big waste of time.
I confess, I have given money to Obama and I’m married to a foreigner whose money is mixed in with mine so it could be that Obama is receiving foreign financial backing as well (even though he has a Visa to work here)
more of the same,, I’m with Attaturk on this one
Beth,
So did I. I think it’s or something.
707!
I also said that he is not out actively pushing statements he made over 4 years ago in comparison to ferraro who kept digging depper
straight to jail mofo
as if!
What’s with the fuckin drive-by ACitizen. I’m with Raven, keep drinking.
Raven in GA, but a goober…nah.
this sooooooooooooo very wrong to alloow cheerleading of stock that is about to fail
allow
Go look before you start in with the dumb ass personal attacks.
If you want respect for unpopular opinions, you came to the wrong place.
Do you think he hasn’t said simialr things lately? He has.
But, I don’t hold Obama responsible for what he has said or will say.
I think this entire enterprise of trying to attribute to the candidates what people on the periphery of their campaigns have said is much less that worthwhile.
Link it, I’ll read it and we can agree
Actually, with SWSX going on, I thought Raven was offering some terrific advice, advice which I fully intend to take to heart. Eliza Gilkyson plays tonight, must be ready.
You know, I don’t remember anyone asking Mitt Romney if he agreed with his church that black people weren’t really people until 1978, when he was 30.
I see we’re flinging poo again.
I’m outta here…
they didn’t because IOKIYAR
Wow! Thanks for the vid. I’ve never heard of her. Where is she playing? Are you gonna be there live?
While we’re at it, IOKIYAM.
It’s OK if you’re a maverick.
*g*
You are not from texas, are you?
I did alot of campaigning before the election here and several DEMOCRATS that I called thought it was true.
explaining the United Church of Christ
How about:
Bush – Clinton – Bush – Clinton | Had Enough?
Or something along those lines.
This is from December 2007:
the wingers HAVE to use fear. it’s all they’ve got. Boo!
Blue Texan- beautiful post.
If Obama had half the record that Hillary has, instead of his much admired clean slate, there would be other more pointed things to examine. Tom Daschle felt BO’s lack of a record would be an advantage. It has proved to be just that. Sooooooo, let’s look at his record, or shouldl I say “Let’s look FOR his record.”
I am so glad you brought this up. I heard in the car this morning when Laura Snarky Ingraham was all over this story. Thinks it is scary, maybe unAmerican, I think. Said Obama should have walked out on this stuff. Lots of opinions, you see. A caller spoke up to try to interpret/defend what had been said. She was disdainful, saying “That’s Black Liberation Theology…not the Gospel.” Now I do not know what Divinity School she attended, but Liberation Theology is quite acceptable to many people who emphasize the Gospel’s “preferential” treatment of the poor. Laura was appalled that the man should be speaking of Black Liberation that can truly be rooted in the Gospel. Her ignorance did not seem to impede the strength of her opinions and fear at all!!
It’s not just the conservatives who are attacking Obama over this. Check out the Hillary supporters.
Hmm recent would be more like in 2008
As a former church-going Catholic, I don’t think many parishioners agree with everything that the Pope or their priest says. However, the Pope and the priest usually doesn’t expect disagreement. That’s why I’m a former Catholic.
To be expected…both sides will use whatever they can to pick apart the other side.
Ah yes, Laura is playing skillfully and deliberately into the the black liberation fearmongering. Whites can’t have blacks liberated now can they?
…..”then wants us to sing ‘God Bless America.’ No, no, no, God damn America, that’s in the Bible for killing innocent people,” he said in a 2003 sermon. “God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.”
Obama Minister who Married Obama and Michele and baptized his children. 2003
If Obama went to this church for twenty years and didn’t know that this sentiment was prevelant..the next question is Why not…and the next question is if he did know about it why did he remain an active contributing member for twenty years. This is the end of the Obama mystic! I promise you there are 527’s being formed right now that are going to get the videos of this guy and they are going to put his “GOD DAMN AMERICA SPEECH UP ON THE SCREEN WITH PICTURES OF OBAMA AND BY NOVEMBER AMERICA IS GOING TO THINK THAT OBAMA IS OSAMA!
And there is one thing I notice about this guy Rev Jeremiah Wright everytime he sasy something hatefull like “GOD DAMN AMERICA” he interjects “That’s not me that in bibleland..that’s the Bilbe talking” Or something like that to cover his ass. He is hateful and racist and now you understand why Michele Obama is an angry Bitch! Just check out the end of the ABC interview they ask acouple of woman what they think about the Reverend and the church and you can see the hatred in their eyes! I have seen a bit of it in Micheles eyes as well. You can not go to semons like this fro twenty years and be brainwashed in the hate of it all…not unlike the hate of Islam! I can assure you as well that they will put video of Imama who espose the hatred of America and they will put it side by side with this guy Obama “Crazy Uncle” and it is going to eat away. I think at this point Obama wouldn’t even get the VP slot. I think he is going to get blown out in Pa now. Pa is always a bit racist to begin with and all they have to do is keep playing Obama’s minister and spiritual guide ranting and raving over and over again and any one who may have been willing to look past the black issue with Obama is goin right back to Hillary or no one perhaps!
Oh and the Sermon on 9-11 and how America Deserved to be attacked….That is going to go over like a lead ballon. He also condemns the US for Bombing Japan with nuclear weapons. Now it is a legitamate debate about that subject but you better not use against those who fought in that war and came home alive because we did use the bombs and that is still a large voting block in this country. These tapes are the end of Obama watch his numbers drop and I am sure that is why Obama is trying to get out in front of this. Why didn’t he repudiate this guy earlier instead of trying to portray him as the “Crazy Uncle”. Hey if I have a crazy uncle I don’t keep going to his sermons and listening to what he says and I certainly wouldn’t be giving him money so he can keep spreading the hate!
Ya, those 8 years of Clinton with peace and prosperity – yuckers!
I am sorry to disagree but I am deeply offended by the bigotry displayed in the pastor’s sermon. I would not attend a church for many years that had that type of sermon. Thats not a reason for attending a church. Where are the biblical principals? Hatred and vile attacks are what we saw from the right -wing religious fanatics. It brings back to me memories of the gospel tour of Obama’s that included ex-gay zealot, Donnie McClirken.
I just posted this at DKos: http://www.dailykos.com/story/…..21/477171. It poses the question: will the media now demand that Obama renounce and reject Martin Luther King?
Have you read any of Martin Luther King’s speeches? He, too, was scathingly critical of America, its racist history, and U.S. interventions in lands populated by brown and yellow people. He accused “white society” of crimes. He accused our military of killing women and children in Vietnam. The truth is that Wright didn’t say anything that MLK had already said.
If I remember correctly, you have to agree with everything the pope says when he is wearing his “I’m infallible” hat.
We used to be beset with anxiety some fridays over whether we could eat a frozen pizza if we took the sausage off. This was a no-no as Catholics were not supposed to eat meat on Friday and some of the sausage might remain on the pizza after removing said item. We would call around to all of the neighboring parishes until we found a cleric who gave us the OK and then have our sausageless pizza.
