Big turnaround from the majority of the Bush Dogs who signed the letter to Nancy Pelosi in support of retroactive telecom immunity. In the final vote, 14 of them flipped, including 4 of the 6 targeted by Blue America. (Marcy has a list of those who did the right thing, and their websites for anyone so inclined to thank them.)
That is just awesome. And props to Harry Reid.
Which leaves Chris Carney and Heath Shuler to be the beneficiaries of your largesse.
(As a Blue America side note, word has it that Rahm Emanuel will be kissing babies in immigrant neighborhoods soon. That offer of an FDL t-shirt to anyone who gets it on tape just got upped to a hundred bucks.)
On to the Senate, where we’ll also no doubt be taking out some ads. Anyone so inclined to donate to the effort can do it here.

ZED, Boswell!!
Too Slow.
no contest
Thanks Jane for all of your hard work. I called Boswells office several times over the last few weeks. I had a nice conversation with one of his assistants yesterday. I am so glad he came to his senses.
I called Space’s office twice today, once to ask that he vote for the rule of law and against telecom immunity; 2nd time to thank him.
So this means we’re going after both of the reprobates (Carney and Shuler)?
Singles? Good news on a Friday. Yeah team !
Let’s get Carney now.
And there are no magic immunity dolls that will save anyone that goes along with Bush on this, either. ;-)
Very classy, Margot.
This does not let Barrow off the hook, at least MY hook.
Yeah. Why wait? He lied to us and is proud of it.
CHRIS CARNEY NEEDS TO GO-GO
(apologies to former members of WHAM!)
This is just a little fun link to continue celebrating.
Veto Me Pumps.
I wish I had an FDL tee shirt. Kewl.
I have to confirm with all the other BA folks but I think that would be the plan.
Any enthusiasm for going after a couple of Senate folks too?
jane, what you have done for this country rises to the level of those that founded our constitution
my heart swells that I am one of the patriots who are part of the lake of fire and dogs
Good job, Margot!
I’d hoped that Space was salvageable. He seems like a decent enough chap.
Rock on Jane! Incredible job, fantastic work!!!
My sister went to law school with him. She says he’s a good guy.
Like Jello Jay?
FDL rocks! Sooner or later they are going to have to take the netroots seriously. I think they are slowly coming to grips with the fact that we are paying attention, we vote, we donate, and we are educated or at the very least we are capable of learning about the issues.
We certainly need to go after those who would take away our rights no matter where they are. Thanks for all you do in leading the fight.
And we can summon up a storm of phone calls and faxes. Way to go FDL!
I’m gonna say that again
hell yes!!!!!!!
I am ABSOLUTELY behind going after Jello. He really needs to be shown that
Bush’shis way is NOT the correct way. He needs to be shown that it is the Constitution above ALL else. No exceptions…and that People count for more than corporations. Always. He definitely has to be on the short list (or maybe he IS the short list!).
and I will say it a third time
we are not ANYTHING like the Republican base, we know power corrupts and we will let them know, they will NOT corrupt themselves on our watch
Jane – I appreciate all the solid information on FISA from you and Christy, Emptywheel and many of the commenters.
I think some of the Blue Dogs were glad we helped them along. Their aides sounded relieved this morning.
I called Space several times; I’m glad he came around. Also, the Foster and Carson special elections may have helped him see the light.
A people united cannot be defeated!
I must go to lunch. My blood sugar is down around my ankles. I’ll catch up with everyone later.
Turning off tinfoil.
Heath Shuler is the North Carolina congressman who has his high school football passing record up on his website bio.
My vote was for Boswell, since he had a primary challenger. At this point, I don’t care. Whoever can be replaced by a progressive is the better choice. Failing that, whoever can be beaten. Shuler and Carney are both worthless.
BTW, were warrantless wiretaps removed from the bill that passed? To me, that’s just as important as immunity for the telecomms.
Needed to find out how this vote turned out. So where do you suppose I came first? Bingo! Jane, Christy, Scarecrow, pups. This is an amazing community. Jeez louise. Netroots are grassroots. We just look techie. Pay attention, Junior. We’ve got your scent!
That was pretty quick …
Statement by Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto on Partisan House Bill
Tinfoil’s always on, or should I say always vigilant? Have a nice lunch.
This is bullshit! Oopsy . . .
Short version: “Screw the people”
He was a quarterback for the Vols, that’s big medicine around these parts.
Aw, Dana must be getting her hair done.
Do you think talking down to the House will help? Tony is not getting the message.
I would try to get that picture of Rahm but I am afraid it might hurt my camera.
I called Ellsworth’s Wash office last night and urged him to vote in favor of the amendment and against telecom immunity. Today, I called his local office and thanked him for voting with his party leadership on the issue and to reassure him that locals are watching and appreciating his representation.
Meanwhile, I flipped to CNN to see what they have to say about this. “House defies spy bill” gets a one-liner in menu of “stories.” Headline story is about docs being cleared in John Ritter’s death. Is it just me or does the public trend scarily shallow?
The Senate can’t just “send back what it did the first time” That bullet has already been fired, and responded to. The Senate can disagree with the House and request a conference to reconcile the two competing versions of H.R.3773, or it can send a bill with different contents to the House. But there won’t be a duplicate “do over.”
tee hee
teh chimp is teh squirmin
No, it’s not you. They feed the greater American public pablum and hope they don’t notice.
But it’s helpful for us, you can tell what they are trying to hide. For example on the Washington Post website look for the scary news down in the one line summaries at the bottom of the news section, “More Headlines.”
Speaking of the Senate, here’s a list of Democrats who need to be “worked on”:
# Max Baucus (D-MT)
# Evan Bayh (D-IN)
# Thomas Carper (D-DE)
# Robert Casey (D-PA)
# Kent Conrad (D-ND)
# Dianne Feinstein (D-CA)
# Daniel Inouye (D-HI)
# Tim Johnson (D-SD)
# Herb Kohl (D-WI)
# Joe (Short Ride) Lieberman (ID-CT)
# Blanche Lincoln (D-AR)
# Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
# Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)
# Bill Nelson (D-FL)
# Ben Nelson (D-NE)
# Mark Pryor (D-AR)
# Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)
# Ken Salazar (D-CO)
# James Webb (D-VA)
# Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
They were the Democrats who voted for the Senate bill. McCaskill and Webb received lots of support from progressives. Most of the others have made a habit of being Republican-Lite.
Well, his pro career pretty much sucked:
(from Wiki) As a pro, his career passer rating was a low 54.3 and in 2004 ESPN rated him the 17th biggest ’sports flop’ of the past 25 years.[1]
I guess high school was the last time Heath didn’t suck at something.
God bless you every one..
Thanks for the list. Webb will be hearing from me very soon.
It’s not just you. At least, it’s not just you yet.
I’m no Vol fan but being the starting QB for ANY SEC school is pretty damn good. I don’t like him or his politics but fair is fair.
When you do, ask him if he enjoyed his biscuit. Maybe he hasn’t gotten to the store yet.
Okay. Just put some money where my mouth is.
On to the Senate.
Glenn Greenwald reported:
Who are the 5 progressive Democrats and what was their objection? Not saying they shouldn’t have an objection…frankly I can’t keep up with the details on this stuff!
Let’s get Carney now.
Jim Webb, the shining hope that has a more progressive voting record that Obama. Where’s “Drinking Liberally” now?
At Tennessee, Shuler gained national attention as one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks. He held nearly all Volunteer passing records at the end of his career, although most of them were later shattered by Peyton Manning. In 1993, he came in second in the vote for the prestigious Heisman Trophy.
Don’t know anything about his football career but he is a lousy congress critter. I hope that he will change.
It feels good, it just feels good. I know I know we have so lots to do. But we help more and more people see the light every day. It feels good.
cboldt had a run down a few threads back
Agreed,I just get annoyed when people start talking about stuff they know nothing about.
Now that is just sad…talk about living in your Glory Days…
I promise I won’t talk about football except Go Niners!
How very Hank Hill of him
That was my point…the mere listing of one’s high school sports accomplishments…in one’s middle age…
Come on Redd, you know better than that.
I really wasn’t talking about you.
of course my critter Feinstein is on the list *sigh* man i want her out of there, she just sucks
This world privacy map from daily kos thread today. a map everyone needs on their wall as a reminder of where we really are, not where we think (hope) we are.
Pass it on.
privacyinternational.org
It’s his BIO, you think Webb doesn’t have every detail of his tour in the Nam 40 years ago on his?
Not to mention on a site that has nothing to do with football …
By the way, a little OT, how is your sweet dog?
I guess this vindicates my vote for Schuler in the “to whom shall we give $5000″ contest.
I know we’ve come so far…
for you Elliott
it’s my election year song…
And Jerry West played at WVU when?
This site has something to do with whatever we talk about here.
sorry about that. think this is it

She’s full of piss and vinegar and the Bohdi has warmed up to her a good bit. Her bad vision limits her interest in fetching the ball so I have to find another was to get her under control.
thx
sort of like
RAVING ABOUT THIS AND THAT SINCE NEW YEAR’S EVE, 2006.
thanks
we have come so far, so far.
Yes. He needs to be watched like a hawk, and have his feet held to the fire when needed.
Do we have a list of Senators we want to target – beginning with Jello, of course.
Check #52 above.
See 52 above.
I assumed Slothrop was referring to Shuler’s Congressional website. My mistake.
You owe me a coke!
Thanks – how did I miss that???
Thanks, Jane. I really want him to be a good rep for our area.
He’s a very nice young man. I was impressed with his conference call a week ago, in that he seemed to really have a grasp of how much we already do have government-funded health care, except now it is inefficient and doesn’t cover everyone.
Oh, funny. We must be old as dirt!!
My specialty, the “missing that” thingie. *g*
Do I annoy you? Please, please accept my most sincere apology.
I read the Daily Kos journal re: Reid’s moves on the bill to the House.
I’m confused though. Am I supposed to think that this was Reid’s plan all along, when he used the SIC bill instead of SJC bill? And that Reid was taking all of this crap knowing that he was going to screw the GOP’rs in the “end” (he he)? And that know we need to apologize to him for all our impatience? OR am I just glad he tried to fix the FUBAR move he made in the first place and he really still is the noodle-spined caver I thought he was?
Shuler is my congress critter and I voted for him. Hey, when ya gotta choice between him and jesse helms, that’s the true definition of rock meet hard place! Didn’t expect him to be worth much….and he’s turned out to be worth even less than that. Targeting his miserable @rse with some heavy duty ad work will be great fun; only problem is, there’s a real good chance we’ll wind up with another republic. :-(
Note: I drive thru’ the small NC town that houses helms’ huge memorial building about once a month and have to fight keeping down the gorge while passing it every time.
a little money and internet fear goes a lonnnnnng way.
i am constantly amazed at how little cash a drug or insurance company needs to waive at a congressperson to get them to heal.
good job.
I guess it works for us too.
thank you to Donna Edwards. what a paradigm moment for the blue dogs. heal democrat, heal.
I’ve been referred to that way! ;)
At the time I was wondering if the rethug version of the bill ploy in the Senate wasn’t just a plan to somehow thwart the Rethugs in the end by Reid. It almost looks like my thoughts may have been on target.
My Congressman isn’t afraid to his hands dirty…
Stronger than dirt.
For Barbara and maydaze…I’m in a linky mood.
Bush recession #2 New High Rise Townhouses
I am guessing you meant to write “getting them to heel” (like the dogs that they are).
However, we are, I believe, trying to get them to heal our Constitution.
So sad…yet probably important to some of the folks in his district for whom high school football is the highlight of their lives. Reminds me why I moved 1000 miles away from my hometown after high school.
Nah, nothin personal, it’s a cumulative thing and I run off at the mouth pretty quickly. The apology is mine.
The Kagro X-explained ploy (substituting the Senate bill into the House bill’s guts) came well after Harry’s decision to bring up the Rockefeller/Cheney bill instead of the immunity-free Judiciary bill. Nothing but Harry cleaning up after his own spill.
He still needs to be replaced in the 111th Congress as MajLeader.
From Bill Bradley’s bio
it’s sooooooo sad
Wow! Many thanks to Jane, Christy, EW, and all the others who worked hard for this. It feels good. Cheers!
The number one person to target immediately is Jay Rockefeller.
He was clearly bribed and should be indicted, never mind lose the next election.
START THE ADS AGAINST ROCKEFELLER NOW!!!!

One of the most disappointing negative votes was that of Jim Cooper. He represents Nashville, TN (CD5), one of the most Democratic counties in the state. The district went solidly for Kerry in 2004, and Cooper faces no serious Republican opponent. I can understand Shuler’s negative vote, but Cooper’s seat in Congress has almost lifetime tenure.
Today is pi day, 3-14. Eat some pi.
– OR am I just glad he tried to fix the FUBAR move he made in the first place –
I wouldn’t even give him that. The “this is a message from the House” status would attach to the House amendment to the Senate bill, regardless of the bill being sent from the Senate to the House was H.R.3773, or S.2248.
The House Democrats are the ones taking the political risk that results from standing up against the demand for retrospective immunity. As long as that sentiment stands firm, Congress won’t be granting retrospective immunity.
how many digits can you recite by heart, you mathy woman
I have a hard time dividing it evenly…
Three: 3.14. Why have a memory, when the toobz are available?
http://pi.ytmnd.com/
you are very smart woman!
Thanks. No worries. Shuler was QB here in DC and was a first class WATB. I didn’t have a very high opinion of him. He’s done nothing since then to change that.
Did you check out the link? It’s really obnoxious.
I don’t believe you. *g*
You posted your pi message at 1:58 (almost 1:59).
3.14159…
brilliant!
You’re right. If we did’nt have Schuler there, we would certainly have a republican. It makes sense that in voting on legislation Shuler would have to be sensitive to his conservative constituency. I don’t think we can expect him to be totally progressive on every piece of legislation. He is fairly new and should be given time to learn and grow. An attack campaign could be against the progressive movement’s best interest.
More funny! Remember: “Use Ajax, the foaming cleanser, wash the dirt, right down the drain, buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-BUH”?
Jane’s upstairs
NO NO NO! Occam’s Razor. Reid is NOT a genius who hatched a Byzantine plot to play the GOP by first substituting the “Intelligence” (no sign of intelligence there) Committee FISA atrocity for the Judiciary Committee FISA bill so that Pelosi could…insert Rube Goldberg process here…help Reid, in the end, vanquish the
BushRockefeller/GOP plans in a manner befitting a Scooby-Doo episode! He BLEW it and Pelosi and Hoyer ALMOST blew it – they DID try to float a “compromise” that would assure passage of the Senate atrocity while, in pathetic and transparent fashion, trying to give a subset of the Dems cover in the process. We caught them and called them on it and they had to drop their original plan. We forced them to do something else that was NOT simply a transparent means of giving cover to some Dems while still giving Bush everything he wants. WE held their feet to the fire and we need to keep holding their feet to the fire.
I was watching he old Cheech & Chong Ajax Lady video. I was looking for the “Sarge, It must be really good shit, it turns blue when it gets wet!” clip. No luck.
yes,
heel.
Whitehouse is my Senator and he’s usually pretty good, I think he can be turned to the right side. As I recall, (but my memory is notoriously rotten, so I could be wrong,) he was against the Senate bill before he voted for it, for reasons I can’t recall. Anyway, he should definitely be worked on.
I am proud to say, though, that I cast my vote for Chris Carney in the original contest. I just knew that weaselly little turncoat would stick it to us again. But I sure am proud of Pelosi, et. al.!
