Andrew Sullivan is an idiot who loves the sound of his own voice. In his unwavering support of Barack Obama he said:

“Consider this hypothetical. It’s November 2008. A young Pakistani Muslim is watching television and sees that this man—Barack Hussein Obama—is the new face of America. In one simple image, America’s soft power has been ratcheted up not a notch, but a logarithm. A brown-skinned man whose father was an African, who grew up in Indonesia and Hawaii, who attended a majority-Muslim school as a boy, is now the alleged enemy. If you wanted the crudest but most effective weapon against the demonization of America that fuels Islamist ideology, Obama’s face gets close. It proves them wrong about what America is in ways no words can.”

Now, how can this be construed as different from what Geraldine Ferarro said without being called a racist statement. She didn’t say it was a bad thing, she pointed out the obvious, that the fact that he is half-black is to his benefit.

What in the world could this nonsense mean? That conservatives are foolish grasshoppers while liberals are diligent ants? That conservatives are garland-bedecked, Dionysian revelers, while liberals are black-clad Calvinists? Or that Sullivan will write anything that scans as iambs and hope we don’t notice what crusty old jello it is?

Sullivan is infuriating in his tunnel vision and sense of privileged entitlement, not to mention his complete blind side when considering his heroes, but he does appear to be unique in funneling perspectives from progressive to conservative back and forth to one another, and when he isn’t mired in Hillary hatred, makes a good case for the election of Obama, despite his political differences with him.

However, for those of us who are progressives, I feel called upon to say the Presidential campaign has taken a dangerous turn recently, and if the campaigns and their enablers, especially those in the Clinton camp who have laid the ground for the worst sort of conservative politics–the politics of cynicism; I’ve got mine, you get screwed; we can’t trust anyone, so leave it up to me–we may be witnessing the worst debacle of Democratic politics in my lifetime, the abdication of the election to John Mc Cain, a concept so breathtaking in its calamitous portent it breaks my mind to wrap around.

I never understood why or how anyone who claims to be gay would embrace conservatism. It just does’nt seem to be in their interest to do so. Or why a black person or anyone else of color would stand on the McCain campaign stage while some wingnut preacher is doing his racist rant warm up speech.

I agree BCinIllinois. Conservatism never gave me the willies until the last eight years. It’s morphed into something that is unrecognizable. I had to laugh listening to Rush Limbaugh when John McCain started doing well in his campaign. Rush couldn’t understand why the base was repudiating his “conservatism”. I thought to myself, “Well dumbass! You’ve ruined what conservatism was by becoming a bunch of jackboot licking neocon fascists hell bent on destroying America and by reducing the US Constitution down to nothing but a gawd damn piece of paper!”.

Rush and others like him can’t see the trees through the forest. They believe they are REAL conservatives, when they’re really not.

Sorry you went to my blog! Did you step in troll poop? If so, I’ll send over my White Noise Insanity limo dry cleaner over to fix you right up! I didn’t have time to put down newspapers before the trolls arrived today if you know what I mean. Most of the time they don’t even go on the paper. It gets tiring. ;-)
