That James Taranto and the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page would agree with Pat Buchanan and Geraldine Ferraro
Is it just us, or does Barack Obama seem a mite too quick to play the race card when facing criticism from political opponents?
Really?
The same James Taranto who wrote this?
It’s a shame [Tim] Russert didn’t press [Harry] Reid to name some Thomas opinions he considers to be poorly written. In the absence of such examples, one can’t help but suspect that the new Senate Democratic leader is simply stereotyping Thomas as unintelligent because he is black.

Oh my goodness. I must need more coffee. Looking at McCain in the ad above the responses, I thought, wow, he was actually kinda cute when he was young.
But, still…Good Morning Attaturk.
Don’t know what to say about the Black.
What grade are these folks in?

Ugh. Another ugly day. the WSJ editorial board is dumbness itself. on yes, zed.
It’s a shame [Tim] Russert didn’t press [Harry] Reid to name some Thomas opinions he considers to be poorly written.
Well hell, that’s an incredibly easy answer:
“All of them”.
TRULY scrambling …spinning like whirling Dervishes,to STOP the tide of OBAMA,cant have a brown person as EMPEROR JONES
These pundits are insufferable. I don’t read them, don’t watch them and only hear about their rantings on FDL.
We have an information problem in this country. News comes from ”official” sources. That is PR or what used to be called propaganda.
Reporters are way too cosy with those they cover in politics and the pundits class is the upper class and that skews their view, don’t it?
But that’s what capitalism brings.
Ah, bigotry. Nothing else unifies the right wing, and has for as long as I can remember.

freezingfeeling your pain, man.Morning, Attaturk–
–did you happen to see Rachel Maddow and Keli Goff put down Pat Buchanan last night on Dan Abrams Show? It was marvelous!
Bigotry is the ONLY way the GOP will win in November. They know this. They will use this. They will turn this into an “Us vs. Them” election while doing their best to keep theirhands clean. Expect to see a lot of swiftboating. And it wouldn’t shock me a bit if Fox started to broadcast some of those 40’s & 50’s “classics” that show blacks in a very unfavorable light if Obama is the nominee. Or Thelma & Louise if it’s Hillary. :-)
Boxturtle (Msg to GOP: Yes, I know Obama is black and has an Islamic sounding name. I’m supporting him anyway)
Truer words may have been spoken, but I’m not sure where…
Or those 30s and 40s and 50s comedies about cute, silly, “scatterbrained” women … in frilly aprons.
They could bring back Burns & Allen and I’d forgive them for it. :-)
Boxturtle (Gracie Allen was a comedic genius!)
“to STOP the tide of OBAMA…“
There’s a lot of people that may have to go out and get real jobs (on both sides of the aisle) should Sen. Obama become president.
Therefore, he must be stopped. When Bill Clinton goes on Rush’s show to essentially court the white racist crossover vote just to get primary numbers you know this is true.

–did you happen to see Rachel Maddow and Keli Goff put down Pat Buchanan last night on Dan Abrams Show? It was marvelous!
Well, here we go again. I’m standing up for Pat Buchanan, The guy is on call from 6:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M., and he’s not a young man. If *I* was on his schedule, I’m certain that I would say something seriously stupid within the first 2 or 3 days. I don’t like the guy, I virtually never agree with him, but I’m standing up for him. Eventually, working his hours, we would *all* say something stupid.
There was, however, a commenter last night (sorry, forget who) who mentioned that he could, and should, have apologized right then, immediately and on the air, to the woman he insulted.
Hard to argue with that one…
Ah, another benefit of being a DFH, we don’t have to wear frilly aprons.
And, being foul-mouthed, we can swear if we burn a pancake ’cause we’re doing pancakes and commenting on FDL at the same time.
3.59 a gal!?!
holy cow.
i just checked locally (MA) and that looks similar to what is around here… with reports of price increases of 8 percent in one week?!
I haven’t commented lately, so I may be jumping off a cliff here, but I was saddened to see a progressive hero (KO) become a concern troll last night & the David Duke comparison was extreme.
It’s basically diesel, check around and get a load of what they’re getting for a gallon of that!
lol, i’ve done exactly that – burned pancakes because i was distracted by reading/commenting here (and of course there was some salty language but no frilly aprons)
What exactly was Obama’s reaction to Ferraro? I saw him chuckle about the absurdity of it but I didn’t see anyone call her a racist. Who did that?
I liked it, Ferraro wants to bow up and get all bad ass, screw her.
thanks for your comment last thread. I, unfortunately, have big-time experience with sleep deprivation. Cost me a thriving practice, and broke me to the extent that I thought I’d never even consider practicing law again.
Don’t wanna go into detail, but thank you for your comment.

Any thoughts about the idea that Hill may pull a Lieberman and run independent if she doesn’t get her delegates?
What did a small soapdish ever do to you?
sounds like a whisper campaign by her opponents. jmo.
Buchanan told Keli Goff (an African-American blogger) to sut up after trying to interrupt her without success. Keli talked back to Pat, saying that was highly inappropriate and wasn’t going to sit there and take it. When Rachel came on she told Pat that she’s been on teevee with Pat countless times and has never heard him tell anyone to “sut up.” She then told him that that was highly inappropriate.
Dan Abrams was more or less speechless. Keli Goff, a hot stunner and highly articulate, is one of Dan’s favorites. He likes himself them sights for sore eyes. OK, that’s sexist–but I’m a feminist with credentials. Ask Jane…*g*

I’m thinking: Chris Matthews, Timmey, Christopher Hitchens, Wolfson, and a bunch of the right-wingers whose names I don’t know.

You are correct, which is why I long ago brought up the fact that the US govt should go into the refinery business as a matter of national security.
Build refineries strategically across the US and eliminate the trumped up bottlenecks in production.
Just embarking on this project would stop some of the madness in the oil markets.
Another way to slow it down would be to reign in the amount of leverage available to trade futures contracts.
Carlyle’s ass is in a sling because of bets that went wrong using leverage of 32 times their capital.
32 times!
That means if you have 1 million dollars, you can buy 32 million dollars of securities (or oil futures contracts). This places a false upward pressure on oil prices.
all the hedgefunds do it…BIG CRAP SHOOT literally…derivatives
“The crash of the dollar is the reason oil’s so high.”
I agree that’s part of it, but refining capacity has to be expanded, and expecting Big Oil to pay for expanding production which they know will bring prices down is unrealistic.
When you are getting $100/barrel why spend hundreds of millions to expand refining capacity to then get $50-$60/barrel?
It won’t happen.
Exactly. And we’re all wearing the bull’s eye.

“Hillary wants race in her campaign. It will help her win PA…”
I ain’t sure about that…Pennsylvania is on of the most racially polarized and structurally and institutionally divided of all the states north a the Mason-Dixon Line, but havin’ said that, I’m not sure that demographics and social changes are not gunna show that the old political strategies are as obsolete as Clinton-McCain.
I think us progressives have been sufferin fer so long that we would question the viability of Jesus Christ if he won the nomination…remember that Karl Rove and Bill Clinton come from the old school where given enough money and media they think they could make a turnip president. These tactics arose outta the political science of institutionalizin’ minority rule by dividin’ and marginalizin’ large segments of the population and makin’ enough people so demoralized about the system that a small group of true believers take over the system. This is the politics and political “science” that is bein’ debunked in every Democratic primary this year…so don’t weep for why Obama can’t win, go out and organize so he can’t lose!!
And one more thing…don’t tell my 20 and 23 year old daughters that Obama can’t win because…I warned ‘em early about “the facts of politics in Amerika” but they’ve told me “that was your world ,Dad!”
KEEP THE FAITH WITH OUR CHILDREN AND DON’T TELL ‘EM THEY CAN’T DO IT!!
btw – Obama’s remarks ‘played the race card’ in this manner
After saying he did not consider Ferraro a racist,
“I think that her comments were ridiculous. I think they were wrong-headed,” he said. “The notion that it is a great advantage to me to be an African American named Barack Obama and pursue the presidency, I think, is not a view that has been commonly shared by the general public.”
For goodness sake, Bill Clinton did NOT go on Limbaugh. He went on Mark Davis’ show, who then later subbed for Limbaugh, and re-played a tape of his prior interview with Clinton.
Let’s not go down the path of Kos here, people.
I’ve found that the term ‘the race card’ is often used by racists.
-G
And speaking of Kos and Gerry F., Kevin has a sensible re-cap here. Completely ignored until Kos set fire to it.
A stupid comment yes, dog-whistle, no.

But Obama ran with it anyway.
Hey Norkse,
You DO know that Jesus was crucified, right?
You know darn well the GOP would demonize him as a DFH terrorist loving middle easterner with a funny name. :)
Come on, you’re expecting reality based opinions and posts from the obamazoids? BWAHAHAHA!
Heh heh heh! I just don’t want FDL to completely jump the shark the way Kos has, that’s all!
I like it here!
Actually, if worst came to worst, I think Obama is in the better position, especially moneywise, to make a third party run. if I were his people and it looked like Hillary was going to prevail at the convention through shady SD maneuvering I’d be sending out feelers to Bloomberg and his Unity Party to see how he feels about an Obama/Bloomberg ticket. Heck, I’d be sending out feelers NOW.
Just sayin’…
Funny thing: In December of 2006 Ferraro was saying that black presidential candidates have it harder, not easier, than do women presidential candidates:
Note that I said “Rush’s show”, which it was. It matters little to me that it was a guest host that interviewed him, a fact that I was fully aware of. The issue was reaching out to that audience and giving credibility (via appearing) to his show.
And you can save your “Kos” wisecracks, as well.
Changing directions rather quickly…
This is an excellent example of how Obama takes an argument and twists it to favor himself.
When he said she wasn’t a racist he was introducing racism into the discussion. He, Barack Obama did that, not Ferraro.
She didn’t say that his being an AA was a great advantage, except that it made him stand out when there was nothing else about his candidacy which was special. She said the same thing was true in her case. She said she never would have been the veep candidate had she not been a woman. But, having said that she also added that she was prepared to be veep or president. I don’t know if she also added that she considered Obama ready.
Still, for Obama to say her comments were ‘ridiculous’ and ‘wrong-headed’ is inflammatory, ridiculous and ignoring her point. And, then to add his own spin on her statement, completely twisting it into oblivion, was just lying. I don’t know what else to call it. He changes the meaning of the person’s argument to the point where it’s just a flat out lie.
For example, earlier in the campaign there was the issue of whether a president should meet with heads of state without preparation and Obama said he would. He was labeled ‘naive’. But, he came back later and twisted their argument into ‘They said we shouldn’t meet with our enemies and I said we would, so I’m a new kind of leader.’ Well, sorry, no. That’s not what they said. they said you were naive for accepting that you would meet with a foreign leader without laying the groundwork.
Check and you’ll see he’s used this tactic many times to deflect powerful arguments. He just lies.
BTW, is it racist to say someone lies? Just checkin’.
I know I’m epu’d, but comment 103 is just ridiculous. Why do you think he made that statement?
It was an ANSWER to a QUESTION from reporters!
Think, for g’s sake. It was NOT he who brought it up, it was Gerry Ferraro. Nothing in that statement of Obama’s was a lie.
Sheesh. Talk about twisting…
How thoughtless of me. I hereby apologize to all small soardishes everywhere. I reject and denounce myself.

Changing directions rather quickly…
This is an excellent example of how Obama takes an argument and twists it to favor himself.
Hmmm! Get ready for more twistin’ than Chubby Checker.
Nice twist! It was Ferraro that raised the issue of race, was it not? She said that Obama had an advantage…was lucky…because he was a Black Male? And how does saying he doesn’t think someone is a racist…when ASKED DIRECTLY…make one interjecting race into the campaign. Obama actually emphasized that she was quite simply wrong. That his mixed-race, his name and his background has been a disadvantage.
Yes she did.
The fact is that she only said this AFTERWARDS. Following her original statements once the controversy arose.
Nice “reverse Malkin”. They remain absurd. It would be like saying that Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton were so advantaged by their ethnicity that they were propelled into being viable candidates. Obama is a viable candidate because he has arose as a very smart lawyer, worked with community groups in Chicago, succeeded as both a State Legislator and as a Senator. He didn’t arrive at where he was through familial relationships and the “lucky” benefits in poltical connections and fundraising that accrued to him as a result of entitlement. Obama is a self-made man.
Well let’s see an excellent case of twisting a persons words.
No what Obama said was whether he would meet with a leader of a foreign State like Iran without PRECONDITIONS. Others had said that they would demand things like Irans accepting that Israel should exist as a State. Or signing away the development of nuclear power PRIOR TO a meeting. Obama said that he would not call for that simply because it would make impossible any contact at the highest levels where such agreements were actually worked out.
No, it’s you twisting what Obama said. This is precisely what you have accepted as fact, when it wasn’t what he said at all. In fact, the other campaigns eventually agreed that he never said that he wouldn’t have laid “groundwork” (an absurdity since all meetings, even with Governors have staff meet or arrange strauctural details breforehand). What Obama said was that he would not require “Preconditions” to be met.
No. It’s not racist. But when you call someone a liar you best not be misrepresenting the facts yourself.
“When he said she wasn’t a racist he was introducing racism into the discussion. He, Barack Obama did that, not Ferraro”.
“When he said she wasn’t a racist he was introducing racism into the discussion. He, Barack Obama did that, not Ferraro”.
Excuse me, y’all. I’m just trying to wrap my mind around the idea of somebody seriously making a statement like this…
“When he said she wasn’t a racist he was introducing racism into the discussion. He, Barack Obama did that, not Ferraro”.
Hey, let’s do the twist!
First, I haven’t read it all, so there is a small chance I have it wrong. Feel free to quote from the article if you can prove me wrong.
He said something about her having said it was easier for him since he was an AA and that nobody believes that. But, she didn’t say it was easier for him, just that he wouldn’t be there without the solid AA support he’s getting, just as she got solid support for her v.p. candidacy and that that aside from his nice suit and color he isn’t anything special.
Is that what you mean by ‘easier’? Was there something in the Q&A about it being easier because of journalists giving him a free ride? Haven’t they?
There’s no racism in her comment. It was all pretty factual. So, where did the racism come from? You said there was a journalist question. Perhaps they introduced it. But, since racism and sexism have been in the campaign already I think you’d really have to be honest and go all the way back to where it first came into the discussion. After Iowa Obama supporters were calling his opponents racist. He never yelled them down (so far as I know). It’s still going on.
Now, it’s possible Obama’s people are simply using it as a tactic to get an edge. But, it’s pretty disgusting if you ask me. I don’t think it’s at all nice for him to be calling other democrats ‘wrong-headed’ unless he wants to specify and detail just what it is he disagrees with. And when people jump all over Ferraro he should tell them to back off. He hasn’t. It certainly isn’t top-level Democratic politics to use that kind of tactic.
Tell me again where the racism charge is coming from.
On the ‘lying’. I say he’s lying about Ferraro bringing in ‘racism’. I don’t think she did, but that he did.
Also, you never tried to rebut the other anecdote-allegation. Do you accept that he lied about the ‘naive’ allegation?
Let’s twist again, like we did last summer!
Racing to speak about racism:
Talk of race is different than ‘racism’. Check it out on wiki. Besides, we’re talking about ‘race’ and ‘racism’ without being racist. Can you point to what she said that was specifically ‘racist’?
Sure sure. He’s got solid AA support. No surprise, no hatred in that.
What I read was that she said he was getting the kind of identity politics support she got when she ran. Is that incorrect? Is it racist to state a fact?
Didn’t know that. Does that mean it’s a lie?
Apparently there was a question before Iowa whether the Blacks in America would support him. The question was whether enough Whites would support him so that the Blacks would go out on that limb. Once they saw Iowa support him they all jumped on his wagon. Jackson and Sharpton never got THAT much White support.
Once gotten it IS a big advantage. Do you deny that?
Every self-made man has had a million friends help him. But, I will admit he’s done the work and made a remarkable success. Look at many of the US senators and you’ll see similar stories. That doesn’t mean they’re all fit to be president either.
————–
Twisting in the wind:
Sure sure, preconditions.
From barackobama.com:
7/07
… the candidates were asked whether they would “be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration . . . with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries.”
Without hesitation, Obama replied: “I would.” He dismissed as “ridiculous” the “notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them.”
MarkH: I don’t know where he got the bit about a ‘notion’. Is this an instance of him implying somone else had said ‘talking’ was ‘punishment’, but that he knew better?
Clinton sensed an opening. “I will not promise to meet with the leaders of these countries during my first year,” she said, adding, “I don’t want to be used for propaganda purposes.”
Figuring she had the high ground, Clinton continued on the attack Tuesday, calling Obama’s position “irresponsible and frankly naive.”
MarkH: She didn’t say anything about ‘preconditions’ here, just that it was ‘irresponsible and frankly naive’ to say definitively you’ll meet with those leaders in your first year.
—-
ABC News –
From a transcript of a debate in Iowa 8/19/07:
STEPHANOPOULOS: But, Senator Clinton, you did tell the Quad City Times that Senator Obama’s views on meeting with foreign dictators are naive and irresponsible. Doesn’t that imply that he’s not ready for the office?
CLINTON: Well, George, we had a specific disagreement, because I do not think that a president should give away the bargaining chip of a personal meeting with any leader, unless you know what you’re going to get out of that.
MarkH: Again, nothing about preconditions. Just about giving ‘away the bargaining chip of a personal meeting with’ the president.
The actual allegation was that he was naive to believe you should meet with those leaders in your first year and not expect them to use it for propaganda purposes and that you should say something specific like that during a debate, leaving yourself no wiggle-room.
He changed it to a question of whether it was about having preconditions. He also threw in the Kennedy quote about not fearing to talk to our enemies which says he’s a new Kennedy kind of leader.
It’s not so different from the way he was accused of being naive with regard to foreign policy toward Pakistan.
He specifically said that if there was actionable intelligence about Al Qaeda in Pakistan that we’d go in after them. There was something about nukes which he backed off later.
Who shows their hand like that except a naif? I’d play poker with him any day and I’m really bad at poker. Honest!
