That’s why I picked this particular image: Triumph of the Swill. Also, it’s about using the whole “protect/focus on the family” (especially the Purity of the Family!) as a distractive device to hide the nasty things they’re plotting and doing.

The other thing I like about the selection of a wartime Nazi Party recruiting poster is that it’s symbolic of the narrow range of Amerikans the GOP would like to recruit.

The photo oddly but appropriately pokes “fun” at the Bush propaganda machine. The image is from a famous series of wartime Nazi propaganda posters. It promoted the myth of a focused, racially pure, national community. By definition, that excluded Jews and other targets of Nazi hate. Among other things, it sought to promote unity - and increased production of goods and good Germans - during wartime.

The predatory/protective eagle denotes the Party, as does the smiling, happy, nuclear family. That family also denotes the Aryan Christians, who alone make up the Party and the German national community. The imagery conflates power, exclusivity, protection, fecundity, familial and communal closeness, and acceptance - but only for Aryan Christians. It implies that Nazis behave within familiar social bounds. Wrong on all counts, but a powerful message, like much of Bush’s propaganda.

The imagery would have sent a visceral, direct message. The text alone doesn’t, but it does use heavily emotive words, Volksgenossen, Volksgemeinschaft, with no good English counterparts. Roughly translated, it’s pedestrian: “The National Socialist Party secures our racially pure national community. Comrades! Turn to your regional Party organization for advice and help.”
