The House is debating whether or not to have a secret session on FISA that the Republicans have requested. When liberal Democrats sought one, they were turned down. But what Blunt wants, Blunt gets.
Still, the Democrats may actually be doing the right thing and standing up to Bush in the process, so that's pretty cool.
Update: Well, this is weird. Dan Lungren seems to be saying that they can't discuss any of the Judiciary or Intel committee information in secret session, so what's the point?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Update II: Per a Democratic aide:
I think Republicans are the dog that caught the car. They thought we would say no, and now they don't know what to do.
Kucinich wants to know what they're going to talk about in the secret session. Hoyer: "I can't tell you that because I don't know."
Kucinich says he will not be attending a secret session on principle.
Um, to say that Dave Obey doesn't think much of the value of a secret session would be something of an understatement.

MOst awesome TV I’ve seen in a long time!
Here we go.
Nancy did a great job countering the speaker monkeys in the press at her presser
will our Lords and Ladies, support the peoples rights?
The President is wrong and he knows it just doesn’t sound the same as he is a goddamn liar now does it Nancy?
Rep David Scott saying some serious words, “Is this a trojan horse?”
Funny, this afternoon she was pronounced brain dead here.
You’ve have been DUGG
http://digg.com/political_opin.....pen_Thread
“Is this not a misuse of the sanctity of the House?” Rep David Scott.
use prevarication,mondacity,whatever syna nym… hey just sing…LIAR ,LIAR,pants on fire…works for me
?? really? she did a great job rebuffing all the FISA spin coming out of the press.
Strangely, Nancy is showing vestiges of spine.
Conservatives prefer simple solutions that don’t work to complex solutions that do because they feel the universe should be as stupid as they are.
Sorry if this is a repeat of news..
Senate to block White House recess appointments
The Senate will move into pro forma sessions this month after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and the White House failed to reach an accord on moving a slew of stalled nominees, a Democratic official said Thursday.
Hear! Hear!
Do you think Nancey is listening to her constituents? We have put a lot of pressure on her via calls and emails.
I actually think she does not a bad job of distinguishing between what is do-able and what isn’t. She gets excoriated here over the impeachment issue on a regular basis, but I think she may be right on this.
It appears that pressure on the Blue Dogs is beginning to have some effect.
Is this on Cspan 1?
yes
Good God! Can it be that Harry is a vestigial verterbrate too?
slightly off topic…hillaroius

What parts of the program are so goddamned secret that they need to talk about them in a secret session? Everyone knows they’re wiretapping, intercepting emails, scoping websites and blogs, etc. We won’t be tipping off Al Qaeda to those programs by televising this session.
I mean, are they going to spend the hour going into the minutia of where our surveillance programs are most vulnerable? Are they going to list names and addresses of top-secret agents?
Give me a break! This is simply a ploy of the Republicans to bully the Dems into passing THEIR bill.
yes, it is. :)
Someone said they thought she was in the early stages of parkinsons.
bloody secrecy canard that Blunt is doing his best to use.
Roy Blunt is a separated Siamese twin of Asscroft
And that will include a potential nominee for centcom commander. goood!
is there a link to see this secret session debate in the house?
Thanks, having problems with it… Has to be something about secrecy. :0
yes but it’s secret
I have a feeling it’s folks like Webb who deserve credit in this situation.
707
No.

we report you decide
thanks jane.
roy blunt can’t open his mouth without lying, can he?
n response to brendanx @ 23
but today, speaker pelosi didn’t know what to say - she had to read the opening statement for the house and had trouble even doing that. it was clear she couldn’t keep her place even with jsut a few lines to read (that i expect ought to be very familiar by now).
i am seriously worried - this did not seem similar to what i have seen from her before.
what the hell is he yannnering about?
ooohhh Blunt just said nuclear plans to weapons.
weird question. what stops a staffer or congress member from bringing a digital recorder or cell camera in with them?
So do Nancy and Harry keep their jobs after the election?
I like this Rep David Scott. I never noticed him before.
He’s like Tom Delay’s taller Brother. Has the same kind of smart assed arrogance.
i think we can do bettah
Tweety is so fucking stupid I can’t believe. He has no idea what a parody is.
I only saw the presser.
cute. how are you watching it? would you or anyone be willing to share a link so i could watch this as well. thanks
I say go for the secret session but only if they all wear their decoder rings.
we’re watching the debate about whether to go into closed session. cspan 1
Yeah, he is very good speaker. I noticed him a few times but don’t know that much about him.
hahahahahaha and tin foil berets
looks like the floor debate just ended.
OT: shuttle crew get’n geared up for EVA. w00t
And the cone of silence.
cspan scroll says yes there will be closed session tonight.
me too. I wish the words Rep David Scott spoke tonight could be put together and published for as many as possible to hear. His words are worth hearing.
i guess Geraldine Ferraro, was against affirmative action
What if we give immunity to the telecoms but strip the WhiteHouse of immunity for their illegal actions and investigate just who was really being spied on?
My guess is a certain Eliot would be very interested. As would an ex Gov of
F*ckers are gonna have it… I was hoping the progressive caucus would’ve delayed it…! 8-(
hahahahahahahahaha
Alabama governor
nasa tv link
so does that mean no vote after closed session? they just go home for a week?
Reyes gives me no confidence.
They are sure to be up on youtube soon. Seriously.
so now what act of the Kabuki is next? pray tell
yup feels slimey imo
gunna debate it tomorrow too.
Would anyone but the Democrats be surprised to find out that Karl Rove has been listening to their phone calls?
Hiya Jane, good evening dawgs -
I just got here and just tuned into C-Span.
What is going on?
fuk, it’s like PR coup for the GOP taking points.
They do not vote tonight, but tomorrow is the FISA vote.
Jesus, this is chilling. Seeing them close up the House and make it secret is making me feel very uncomfortable.
Thats because there are Republicans involved.
ahhhhh 3 bells how British
Thanks :)
lets VOTE, so that we can capitulate in private!
Monkey House at the Zoo.
The People are being sooooo short changed here.
I’d just like to know WHY this issue is such a hot button survival issue for the Bu$h Crime Family! Could it be because they’re not surveilling turrists? They’re listening in on Democrats and other perceived White House enemies, many of whom are trying to vote on this so they can capitulate in private?
WTF? and FUBAR!
Let the FEAR begin.
“In response to Raven @ 8
I actually think she does not a bad job of distinguishing between what is do-able and what isn’t. She gets excoriated here over the impeachment issue on a regular basis, but I think she may be right on this.”
Nancy was a progressive until she became Majority Leader. Then she sold her soul to Voldemort on impeachment. He lets her wander free on everything else, but on impeachment her vital organs are pinned to the display case that he takes out every now and then to cackle with glee over. I think that she will be long remembered for nixing impeachment, and not much remembered for anything else (except being the first woman Speaker). Something like this: “As the first woman Speaker, Pelosi provided cover for the illegal activities of Vice President Cheney and President Bush by taking impeachment off the table.” It stinks to high heaven, and I’m still angry about it.
Bob in HI
yeah, and the last secret session was for iran-contra, wtf.
ohhhh nooooooooooo
snarky McChimptitudyness!
*SIGH*
When the subject is spying on the Citizenry, I suppose it should.
Lock the door behind them and shut off the lights, last man standing gets to tell Bush yes or no.
same here. I absolutely do not trust what any of them are doing with this.
if Junior was back on his heels answeing depo s we would not be going through ANY OF THIS crapola imo
I just watched George Bush walk out to the podium.
It looked like has a very small penis.
It was like the aircraft carrier codpiece in the Bizarro World.
Sorry, couldn’t help it.
707!
Great answer Madam Speaker Pelosi! Called Bush a liar twice, even called him a liar on Iraq. This is the response every Democrat should use when the idiot wingnuts bring up their asinine talking points. And i loved the way she said, “I’m stating a fact” and framed her response with another Bush lie.
I’m still angry about taking impeachment off the table too. Among other thing. Still have to give her credit where it is due tho.
I can see the Black Suburbans full of Cheney’s gang pulling up to the House now.. they will try to scare the urine out of the entire House.. in secret.
Blunt knows Cheney is loading his shotgun, downing a few Silver Bullets, and will visit the secret session to shoot some low flying democrats…
We need to push back on the meme that telecoms won’t be willing to help if we allow them to get sued for abuses.
If it’s the LAW, they CAN’T refuse to help. Done and done. Now STFU George.
WELL, NO CHIT! i’m sorry bout yelling, but
I am yelling here.
this just stinks so badly. another job for the newly created Dept. of Restoration of the Constitution and Bill of Rights,
headed by Chris Dodd,
under President Obi
Since they can’t talk about the intelligence the Dems just made them look idiotic. Read KagroX’s excellent diary at KOS about this very issue.
It’s pretty uplifting.
So, that is Blunt’s secret!
The Cushing Spot price for oil closed today at $110.33/bbl. As I have been pointing out for the last while about 30% of this is pure uncontrolled speculation by hedge funds, oil in particular and commodities in general are the next big bubble only this one is likely to burst sooner rather than later as the US and world economies slow as a result.
i shall be a homebody
I don’t know why it is, but their going into this secret session makes me think that it is about Iran. Perhaps I am wrong, but with Admiral Fallon resigning and suddenly there is this”important and new information”(tin foil)
i am already a homebody.
i wouldn’t worry about that. the admin is too worried about covering its’ ass right now.
Cheney doesn’t get to go into the House. It’s strictly the Senate he gets to poison.
Blunt better have some good secrets to share, or he’s going to be laughed at so hard…
Does anyone think that the NSA will be listening in on the House secret session?/s
How did it get decided that they were going to go into secret session? Did they vote on it?
Maybe he knows the formula for McDonald’s secret sauce…
me too. moved my financial “empire” home in the late 90s. which is why i can be so plugged in to all of this now. and it was a great decision for me, made on the premise that the nation was headed in this direction and i’d be better off not to be relying on an automobile for an income.
and wtg Tex and sadly!
Heh. It’s a given.
briefly, emptywheel’s take:
click on the link for more…
i like it too..”g”
eems dubious to me but EW follow things much closer than I do. thanks for link!
ba ba ba, ba ba ba boehner will be for it soon as well. we will see a lot of garbage act democratic as they realize this is their last year in congress.
we VERY lucky indeed
I am primarily a homebody because of pain and disability. Wish I could get out more, but SO SO SO grateful for how this computer connects me to the world, and to all of you.
Jane’s got an update posted.
Isn’t every single House seat up for election this year too?
Just hypothetically, for retired folks seeking asset preservation, should they just liquidate (non-currency) investments and hold in (non-US) currencies?
I’m ignorant, so this probably all wrong, but with intangible (finance) and tangible (real property) tanking as the bubbles pop, popping commodity demand seems likely. So when I take away intangibles, tangibles, and commodities, I can’t see what’s left except currencies.
[this assumes gold would act like other commodities, but i just pulled that out of my behind….]
Yep, all of ‘em, every two years.
yes, but they are not all contested.
wow, that amazes me! you are so strong here at the Lake. I’d have never guessed!
DOUBLE WTG.
wow.
i was the one who though there was something
