That was sometime in the Fall.
And then...poof, the war occupation, it disappeared.
I know it's vitally important that all news be focused upon a prominent governmental office holder liking to pay for sex -- because THAT'S never happened before and all. I also know there's a Presidential Election on so it's vitally important that the candidates positions be covered for sixty seconds a day and the horse race aspect be for the remaining 23 hours, 59 minutes.
But the occupation still rages, people still die, and $12 billion a month still gets spent over there.
And yet, the occupation is not discussed...at all. And somehow the end result is this:
Twenty-eight percent of the public is aware that nearly 4,000 U.S. personnel have died in Iraq over the past five years, while nearly half thinks the death tally is 3,000 or fewer...
The survey, by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, found that public awareness of developments in the Iraq war has dropped precipitously since last summer, as the news media have paid less attention to the conflict. In earlier surveys, about half of those asked about the death tally responded correctly.
And it's really unfortunate because up until now, the media has done such a fine job on covering Iraq have they not?
After all, just a few days ago McClatchy reported the Pentagon had authorized an exhaustive study of Iraq Saddam-era documents and the report was coming out having found no relationship between his government and Al Qaeda. But then the Bush Administration decided to just be wankers and not allow the study to be released on-line (it was supposed to be released yesterday). Now, you have to actually write and ask for it and eventually they will send you a CD-ROM ["how does late January 2009 work for you?"]
I'm sure this was given a prominent mention on all of the news broadcasts last night because even our media could see what was afoot. Right?
(video posted because Juan Cole is right)

Zedderific!
mornin’ - what’s all this then? There’s a war going on? Huh. Hadn’t heard anything about it in a while - just figured they cleared that shit up…
War? Damn you and your “war”! Don’t you know that Spitzer got laid?!? Spitzer got laid using an escort service!!!
What the hell are you talking about “war”?!?!?
Get your priorities straigt man!
Oh by the way - for all you D.F.H.’s who can’t give it a rest, crooks and liars has the newly not-so-released report posted here!
Twenty-eight percent of the public is aware that nearly 4,000 U.S. personnel have died in Iraq over the past five years, while nearly half thinks the death tally is 3,000 or fewer…
What I’d really be interested in seeing is two polls:
1) what percentage of the American public still think that Iraq was involved in the 9-11 attack, and
2) what percentage of the armed services currently serving in Iraq think the same thing.
Wasn’t all that long ago that a survey of the armed personnel in Iraq who thought they were fighting the perpetrators of 9-11 was in the 70% range…
and with regard to my #1), above, their party affiliation…
OT - Hoosiers will get their chance this year to hear directly from Sen. Barack Obama on Saturday when the Democratic presidential candidate comes to Indianapolis.
No details were available by late this afternoon on the time or location of the campaign stop, nor how people might be able to attend.
Kip Tew, (ed note - who was a law school classmate)(but probably doesn’t remember it) a longtime Democratic insider in Indiana politics who is coordinator of Obama’s campaign here, said that “clearly, we are very excited he’s coming to town. It shows he’s going to take Indiana very seriously.”
Holy shit - a Democratic candidate for President of the United States is coming to Indiana - not sure that that has happened since Bobby Kennedy.
But here’s the bad news for Obama. The Democratic party, at least in Marion County (Indianapolis) is pretty much a function of the Simon family - owners of various malls, the Indiana Pacers, and Evan Bayh. They are fervently pro-Hillary, and have already hosted at least one very quiet fund-raiser for her at their home.
What the hell - they’re probably already maxed out - until they form their own 501(c)(4).
ssshhh, don’t tell ‘em I suggested that.
Bastards.
SOS
Any Britney news yet this morning? Anything interesting going on? Is Al Queida still fucking with our dollar? Is the tea water boiling yet?
I saw a bumper sticker yesterday that said
Peace Is Patriotic.
The voting record of Bayh is pretty well toe the line DLC. I was at an event the other night where there were a lot of people that voted for clinton2 in the primary here. There was a lot of disappointment about her campaign tactics and her inability to run an efficient campaign and a totally unscientific poll showed me that a number of votes would go to obama in the general come November.
I don’t like either of them at all but I will not under any circumstances vote for clinton2. No I will not vote for Nadir but I will write in my neighbour’s name before I check off on a DLC presidency.
Commie propaganda
Ha!
On the left side of the bumper was a Dem sticker. Peace was in the middle, and on the right side was Obama.
And, when I stopped at a 7/11 to get a cuppa, I picked up the Rolling Stone with Obama on the cover.
The check out guy said he’s going to be the next president.
I said maybe.
He went into a whole schpiel about Obama, Osama. His middle name is Hussein, he’s a Muslim….blah, blah.
I was on my way to work and I didn’t want to have to hit the guy, so I just left.
As opposed to clinton2 who is on the wrong side.
Good article on Clinton there too.
Geeze, fellow -
You ever sleep? Or are you gearin’ up for another day in court? *g*
I saw a good one that sais
Eschew Obfuscation
I haven’t read it yet.
Can’t read at my desk, the front one and at lunch there was a Drum Jam. I played my flute. Really cool.
As someone from Europe where I believe we have a little bit more of a mature viewpoint when it comes to sex this whole affair in NY is ridiculous. What in heaven’s name is wrong with two adults having consensual sex, albeit one of them was paying way too much for a roll in the hay.
We have an administration that is continually breaking the law, we have corporations that are indulging in war profiteering, we have cheney’s company stealing money by the billion, we have a madman in the WH getting his jollies watching snuff movies while condi whips him and the Congress does damn all to protect the country and the Constitution. Great priorities.
Geeze, fellow -
You ever sleep? Or are you gearin’ up for another day in court? *g*
Nope, no court today at all. I do seem to be working up to an at-least semi-professional insomniac status, though… *g*
Hey Raven - we good?
1,779 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen jayt and the early mornin’ Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“Holy shit - a Democratic candidate for President of the United States coming to Indiana - not sure that that has happened since Bobby Kennedy.”
And what is even better, citizen jay, is that this isn’t about the primary campaign but is his first shot at preppin’ the ground for the general election. The crowds he generates and the excitement translates not only into new precinct organizers and foot soldiers but establishes a base that will require the fascists ta send their candidate in several times with whole goo-gobs of money in order jest to be competitive.
The genius of Obama’s 50-state strategy is that every stop he makes, every speech he gives cultivates buzz and VOTES for the general election…he’s thinkin’ WAAAY beyond the primary here.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION…WE GET THIS GUY’S BACK AND HE’LL TAKE CARE OF THE REST!!
well, fwiw, the Simons, all things considered, keep a relatively low profile.
And I don’t know that anybody pays much attention to anything that Evan Bayh has to say.
There’s a decent chance that Obama could take this state.
313!
Thanks! I’ve got mine now.
Don’t know who yesterday’s WPITW was, but here’s my nominee, from a very busy day:
Pentagon Dismisses KBR Contaminated Water: Troops Should ‘Just Drink Bottled Water’
Been there, doing that. The real kicker is I used to sleep like the proverbial log. :-(
Gotta finish suitin’ up and get away for an early doctor’s appointment in the big town. Catch up with ya’ll and the latest on down the road.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Cohen and Kristof day in the NYT. La Collins says the Spitzer scandal has completely undermined her confidence as a voter. She says you pull the lever for your clean-up-the-government candidate, and it turns out he’s into high-risk hookups. Mr. Cohen’s column is titled “The Global Rose as a Social Tool,” and he says he’s not asking you to remove the romance from a rose, but as you pick out blooms for your beloved, try resetting your rose associations in order to see the world as it is. Mr. Kristof urges us to “Do as He Said,” and says the New York prostitution law that Governor Spitzer pushed should be enforced firmly, by cracking down on pimps and customers.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a selection of bagels and cream cheese.
prostratedragon, I guess the troops are supposed to eat cake along with that bottled water? Appalling….
Lox are here
Sittin’ here looking at the program from my son’s H.S. graduation - on which I was frantically scribbling notes and no doubt looking like an idiot - because the keynote speaker was Evan Bayh.
Did I mention that *** Simon was a classmate of Nick’s? Bayh said right up front that Mrs. Simon had called and asked him to come speak, and that that was an offer he couldn’t refuse.
Among other things I jotted down while he was speaking of making peace with the R’s - is the following: “This guy wouldn’t bring a knife to a gun-fight, he’d bring candy and flowers.”
My poor son - missed most of his ceremony while being a political geek.
Ha! That probably came from that wonderful company S.T.O.P. — Words R Us. (Sententious, Turgid, Obfuscatory and Prolix, LLC)
Yeah, talk about having no sense of history as well as a really infernal ear.
Would someone please send
Ms. Collinsgoodness, the whole op-ed page some smelling salts and apintRehoboam of Southern Comfort?Reading this Iraq report looks like a looking-glass experience. Here are chapter titles:
Of course, these are all referring to Saddam’s regime.
dammit Marion - now I’m off to Dictionary.com for two of those words… *g*
OT: I’d be interested in hearing Jane and/or Christie’s reaction to Olberman’s special commentary last night. C&L has the video.
[giggle]
I think I was most impressed by KO’s statement, right up front, that he had doubts as to whether or not he should even be doing the Comment, because it would necessarily make him look like an Obama backer, which may or may not be the case…
ok - “sententious” sent me off to have to look up another word - “aphoristic”
Curses!!
Nice to know that the MSM is doing such a cracker jack job in carrying out their role in a representative democracy of providing the information necessary for making informed decisions. Either nearly 1/2 the population is terminally ignorant or the “free” press is a myth. You decide.
Which is why it is an important ’strategy’ for the Democratic Party to be “strong on Defense” and “National Security”.
Sorry - the sarcastic tone of the post has got me in it’s sway.
Not sarcasticly, the question to push poll with is
“Are you more or less secure than you were 7 years ago?. 6 years ago? 5 years ago?”
“If a disaster should strike your community, do you think the response would be better now than 7 years ago? 6 years ago? 4 uears ago?”
“If you voted in 2000, would you vote the same way again? 2004?”
“Was the 2003 Invastion of Iraq a good idea? 1990?”
JoeScar and Timmeh both speculating (gleefully) that the Dem’s are killing their November chances by conducting a contested primary.
Not so fast, boys…
Do you mind my asking if you used to be a regular commenter on the HuffPo?

What was the “jist” of Keith’s special comment?
KEEP THE FAITH,IT’S ALL THEY LEFT US!
Off topic.
Did everyone see Pat Buchanan tell the only black panelist last night on the Dan Abrams show to ’shut up’?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SQPpCDbup0
One thing this campaign season is doing is weeding out the racists. You might not think this was a racist remark, but how many times has Buchanan told a white guest to shut up? He showed us his creepy side last night and I think he should be fired for it. It’s people like Buchanan, Ferraro, Hillary, and others who are the catalyst for the Democrats in our country to want change and a new direction!
transcript and video: Countdown Special Comment: Sen. Clinton, “This is not a campaign strategy. This is a suicide pact.”
I’ve posted but not regularly. Why?
I’m sorry - don’t mean to be a jerk. There was a Bluetoe that used to post there as a strident and angry Republican, and that particular Bluetoe eventually decided that he’d had it with the R party, and changed his tune.
Was wondering if that might be you, and at the same time I’m feeling like a dick for even having brought it up (been up all night - judgment is most likely a little lacking).
I’ve been getting emails for vigils from MoveOn for the upcoming fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. I haven’t seen anything about any other activities planned to put the date into the news. Are any other groups planning other activities for the fifth anniversary on March 19? I thought there was going to be an ANSWER march in Washington, but that doesn’t seem to be coming together.
Grow up America. Put your puritanical past in the dust bin of history. Legalize prostitution. Force the Republicans to vote on legalization. It will be hiliarious to hear them sputter and blather during the debate.
America is a society with the most bizarre values and priorities. We certainly suffer from the pall of puritanism while under constant bombardment in the media using sex to sell everything. We have huge industries devoted to fashion, glamor youth, and so forth.
I suppose that there is so much titillation out there, in the media and on the street, that many people are confused about their own sex life and how in intersects with the moralism that religion imposes, not to mention the law.
How many times do we hear about viagra and re invigorating your sex life and read about celebs jumping from one lover to another. And since you can pay to play, there’s little hard work in getting a “relationship” going when you can simply pay for the fun bits with no commitment. Heck many people consider sex to be hardly different than “tennis”… you find a willing partner, you play and you go back to your life.
But pols and prosecutors are supposed to practice what they preach. So Spitz got caught in hypocrisy more than anything else. While I don’t give a damn about other’s sex lives and I don’t if someone else is not on the up and up with their partner, it certainly shows some serious character flaws. Does this prevent them from doing a job? Maybe yes and maybe no.
I do know that there are others who have similar and worse “offenses” and seem to be carrying on in high positions.
But the incident does reveal some over zealous prosecution and what might have been casting a wide net looking from some dem fish to fry.
That’s troubling.
Wasn’t me. I’ve only voted Republican once and that was for the mayor of my town. On that occasion, however, I did not choose wisely. Get some rest, there is much work to be done.
What was the “jist” of Keith’s special comment?
Essentially that the Clinton campaign was stooping to unacceptably low behavior, and that it might well poison the party to an extent such as to cause a loss in November.
Are you sure? Substitute campaign for regime and it sounds like elections we have known and are knowing.
Good morning morning pups. Back in the BlueBayState after visiting BSRH Jr. in a country that shall not be named but has a political system unlike ours. Was told by one native that the choice between first woman and first black man made this a most thrilling American election to observe and restores belief that America is etc. after Iraq war.
Kept off the toobz by general consensus that a vacation is time away from the Lake and the Kos and the Muck, or as BSRH jr. opined “there will be plenty of muck for you when you return.” Boy was there and it is mucky.
Spent my first day back in the old democracy exercising my democratic right of free opinion and party affiliation by writing/calling Howard Dean for reasons that need not be explained and MSNBC on account of Buchanan and then in support of KO until the DNC phone no longer answered and MSNBC’s feedback address suffered terminal failure.
Today I said will be better. Alas, as far as the NYT reports, there is little good in this morning and as far as Kos is concerned, no let up from Ferraro flap, and as far as I can tell from FDL and TPM, immunity is still alive.
It is good to know therefore that the lake is alive with the sound of snark.
Good synopsis, spot on.
Updates from Iraq, should read 4,000 dead and 27,767 maimed and injured.
Folks relate to high numbers…

Get some rest,…
I feel it coming on, and apologize if I offended.
Welcome back!
Olberman said Clinton’s tactics “were not a campaign strategy but a suicide pact”. The MSM, Olberman excepted, is going to play up the drawn out the Democratic nominating process as an advantage for the Republicans in Nov.. They LOVE McCain.
I suspect that we are seeing that Hill who thought her time had come is fighting to prove her bona fides and finding herself up against someone who is perfectly competent and inspires all sorts of people and gives them some hope.
Obi played the come from behind role and Americans do like that meme.
We also know that one doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to be pres. Bush proved that in spades. Any of those who ran (on the dem side) would have been perfectly fine as pres.
The campaign has revealed more about the candidates character and style and people seem to be gravitating toward someone who they feel is new and fresh with less baggage and IOUs in their pocket.
Obi will win and hopefully Hill’s people can get behind the nominee. I can’t see letting a jerk like McVain win because your candidate is not leading the dem ticket.
This is the most troubling aspect. The FBI was tailing The Spitter apparently so what the heck was that about. Were they trying to get some “evidence” to blackmail him? Were they after a new video for the chimp to get off on? Tailing the farkin governor….. what!
Morning!
Congressional Black Caucus priotities is topic on Washington Journal right now, with Rep Bobby Scott

Thanx…geeze LouEEZ, it sounds like the Keithster has been listenin’ ta ol’ Norske. I been sayin fer months that if the corporate bosses tell ‘er ta kamikazi Obama she’ll do it.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION AND REMEMBER, NOT ALL BASTARDS ARE MEN!!
Only the illegitimate ones?
Too many bios of people of achievement have shown similar flaws for it to seem a priority when the main work manages to get done, imo.
Furthermore, sexual behavior always involves mystery from an outsider’s perspective, and what is more destructive than trying to solve a mystery? You’d need a really good, big-crime-level reason.
Low level buzz that if Hillary does not win the nomination she’s considering running as an Independent. I’m skeptical but then the ego’s these people have it’s not an impossibility.
Yes, and protested. By 9:00 MSNBC’s feedback email went dead, so I may not have been the only one. On the other hand, as KO had announced his special comment in advance, it is rumored that HRC backers were organizing a massive emailing campaign to ‘Shuster’ him off the air, so it may alas be shutting up KO and not shutting down Buchanan that causes the death of Feedback@.
Rachel Maddow told him off elegantly. What sang froid that woman has! (Ancient French expression for coolness in the face of the enemy.) Abrams did nothing.
Literal translation “cold blood”
oh christ, Liarman redux…
yeah, that’ll guarantee a McCain presidency…
Maybe one of us should call her - you can get right through if you make up a name of the company you’re representing…
good to back at the Lake. Less thrilled with the primary, as you can see from my post. Glad to have arrived to find the Spitzer thing ended, at least phase one of it.
Howard Dean up now on JoeScar
important to listen to the KO piece at the MSNBC website and comment there…even if it takes days. Yes I know it’s all over the progressive blogosphere, but it matters to go to original source.
Lieberman was on Imus this morning shilling for McCain. “Armed Services Cttee” going to Middle East. Oh, wait, it’s just McCain, Lindsey Graham and Lieberman. Oh, and our tax dollar. Hypocritical pricks.
In my opinion that low-level whispering is way off base…
Hill will support Obama if he wins.
She knows the country needs a Dem to nominate the next Supremo.
Sheesh… I’m trying to keep an open mind…
Clinton knows her world won’t end if she is not nominated…
I know the literal meaning, but also wanted to convey the way it is used, especially as “in cold blood” means something different in English.
Thanks for the feedback. I am disgusted with Buchanan and MSNBC right now. If Hillary and her Thugs succeed in going after KO and Buchanan walks free, I’m going to be livid.
As much as I might take issue with some of her tactics, there is NO WAY she would ever do this.
hey bro–how goes it? Still grieving?
–and do you ever sleep?
–and do you ever sleep?
I was going to ask the same thing of you… *g*
Sleep has become something of an issue here - workin’ on it…
If her support for the Democratic nominee was absolute one can’t help but wonder why she played up McCain’s “experience” and readiness to serve as POTUS at Obama’s expense. Can’t help but question her ulterior motives.
On the snark side. Purported to be from the Obama campaign, a Clinton newspeak memo annotated.
http://thepage.time.com/obama-.....s-release/
I get Campaign emails and did not receive this so I believe it’s is not Obama-authentic. But it is funny. For ex.
No, I went to celebrate the life of someone who lived 9i mostly good years.
Grieving, why?
jayt - imo, insomnia is nothing to grin about. the first few months aren’t so bad… but eventually it just saps every bit of energy and every functioning brain cell you have. at least that has been my experience. i would not wish long term insomnia on ANYONE.
Love to stick arougn but off to work to prepare for a meeting in Chicago this weekend. Keep fighting the good fight. A Democratic sweep in Nov.
A commenter on Crooks and Liars’ video of KO purported from a disaffected Clinton campaign worker said that the “architect” has a plan that is not the one we think, and its 2012 she is after. Refused to elucidate if architect was Clinton or Rove. You can find it if you are interested by searching my response/query.
welcome back!
see response to marion. Going back to sleep. will join you guys tonite.

KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITOON, THIS IS THE REAL DEAL
Bingo, you hit the nail…
People ARE subscribing motives to her actions. Which is great
in a democratic society.
Call me naive, but I’m trying to remain neutral and vote according
to their policies such as Health Care, etc…
Disclaimer: I’m for Hillary, but think both are great candidates…
and will vote Democratic in the fall because I believe our planks
are great.
Why am I a Democrat, probably cuz my parents were Democratic and
instilled my love for equality.
Personally, I think folks should cut Hillary some slack…
mmm… please refresh my memory.
Bush should be impeached why?
