The NYTimes and NYPost both reporting this morning that Gov. Spitzer is expected to resign this morning, with the NYPost saying that it is likely to happen within the next hour. MSNBC reports that the resignation announcement will occur this morning as well.
More as we get it...
UPDATE: NYTimes has fleshed out their story on this.

$80,000 on hookers. Must be nice to be rich. What a farce.
And Dr. Laura blames Spitzer’s wife: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....90994.html Sigh!
yep:
from the NY Post:
yeah but look what it bough him.
Jackie (in case you didn’t see it) -
{{{Left you a note in epu-land downstairs.}}}
BTW, I got an email yesterday from some D NYS list I’m on, to sign a petition to “save Eliot Spitzer.” I did not sign it. The sooner he’s gone the better.
Why does his wife stay with him? $80K worth of infidelity would make the average woman bolt! Why do they stay?
Yesterday on the Today Show they had on Dr. Laura, this morning they were interviewing Psychologists to explain how to talk to children. Fortunately, I had enough sense to turn off the TV.
neither a surprise or unexpected. yes, there is a double standard but we’re (the democratic party) aren’t lowering the expectation level of behavior of OUR officials to that of the repugs. as far as how or why this investigation was triggered, i’m going to hold off until more comes to light
CNBC: Eliot Spitzer to resign at 11am ET
I want to know what bank employee tipped the IRS? Seems silly that our tax dollars are wasted on something as trivial as this. I know it is hypocritical, but had he flown to Las Vegas for his tirades, there would be nothing illegal about it. And to see these god forsaken republicans barking out that they are going to impeach and that he needs to resign in 48 hours disgusts me to no end. I think we need to crank up the wurlitzer on Sen. Vitter. He broke the same laws as spitzer is alledged to have broken. Where is the moral outrage from the Repub’s on this? Effin partisan pukes.
MSNBC said it will be effective Monday.
you do have to question the economics of it all. 80,000? bargain shopping, anyone?
The heart has its reasons. Sorry to see him go this way. He was an SOB, but he was our SOB.
So, maybe Silda’s now planning a presidential campaign.
$80,000 to the Spitzers is probably like $10 to you. (Just guessing.)
I watch that video over at Think Progress yesterday and thought - What non-accredited school gave her a PhD. Gawd & Golly she is stupid! I can’t believe anyone would buy that crap unless they are a wingnut!
The Doughy Pantload had a column yesterday in the LA Times about how liberals can’t bring themselves to use the word Patriot. Glancing at the headline was enough, couldn’t bring myself to read it.
I wonder if he will mention Craig and Vitter in his announcement.
the lt governor will take over (isn’t he lucky? - sorry)
he should
Did Spitzer think he was shelling out that much to ensure discretion from Emperors Club along w/a top o’ the line fuck buddy?
If that was his thinking, he got hosed.
Spitzer screwed up. ROYALLY! I think by resigning he would be doing the right thing. Yet it amazes me that Republican calls for resignation and impeachment came so soon - unlike with Larry Craig, David Vitter et al. There is a lesson in this, Democrats think that it’s good to let the Rs sort these things out yet the minuite it is a D the clamor from Rs is huge. Democrats can’t just sit there next time and must demand resignations any time Rs are involved in scandal; otherwise they risk letting them off the hook 9like Vitter and Craig) so that when the shoe is on the other foot the same Rs they let off the hook will screw them.
Related to this, isn’t it great that Larry Craig is appealing to the Minnesota Court of Appeals? Hopefully he will do so from now to the election. There have to be pictures of McCain with Craig. Yes we have to fight fire with fire.
He should stand at the podium wearing a diaper and tapping his feet while announcing he is switching party affiliation but staying in office.
How can any of us mere mortals tell what Sptizer was thinking? That he got “hosed,” I agree with.
He doesn’t have the personality to go quietly into the night. So I wonder what he’ll do afterwards. That part could be interesting.
This is a guy who is famous for prosecuting financial crimes. He knows all there is to know about how money leaves trails. What was this man thinking?
So will the Spitzers be the Splitzers? If she were Republican she would never leave him. (Hmm, so let’s see, Hillary didn’t leave Bill so… .)
Thank-you..:)
I know that I jump around too much but I try not to upset/annoy people, (especially here at the Lake as it really has become a sort of home among fellow spirits and friends) :)
What a chickenshit. I am disappointed.
Lt Gov Paterson now on wnyc.org.
CHS:
OT, re Fallon. Would the Senate Armed Services Committee (Levin, Webb, Kennedy, Clinton, Lieberman et al) be the one to call him in for hearings?
Good morning Christy, pups. Time to learn more about the incoming governor.
This whole Spitzer thing is weird. There are a lot of holes and even if he did have ’some’ on the side (not condoning), the ‘investigation’ still reeks..
I think he should stay, let the Repubs impeach him then we could use the double standard against all of them….
Paterson is talking about how he copes, being nearly blind. It was orignially broadcast 3/5/07. Going on to talk about him with guests.
It will be interesting to watch what Spitzer does now. Only knew about him & his career generally before this, but after reading up on him I’d venture that he’ll find a way to go after those who went after him.
I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.
They could be, as could Waxman and/or Murtha in the House, I’d think.
Paterson works by getting poeple to like him, but guest suggests that NYS problems might need a hard-ass, not a nice guy (my words, not his).
A-bloody-men! *g* But….back to the original question….am I remembering correctly that it *has* been three such deaths in a period of only a few weeks?
IIRC:
— Petraeus is going to be in D.C. next week.
— Fallon is the one who allegedly called Petraeus an “ass-kissing chickenshit.”
Affirmative. hehehe
The Intelligence committees might also want to have a word with Fallon, especially with regard to possible twisting of intelligence for political purposes at the WH and DOD.
Good Morning Christy and Firedogs,
have been thinking since the story broke that the lull till resignation was all about negotiating with DOJ -
Christy - if he’s made a deal, doesn’t that mean we wont be hearing any of the details of the investigation ? - how handy
My army major efriend sez he is called Betrayus within the military.
AP sez resignation announcement (citing “top Spitzer staffer”) at 11:30am EDT.
Yep — Steve Clemons has some background chatter on Fallon, btw, that might be of interset for folks.
If I were his defense counsel, I’d work that angle. It would be a smart move, frankly.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
I know of two in the last couple of days, the police chief (investigated CIA rendition flights)who jumped/was pushed and now the bodyguard. David Kelley was a scientist who was ’suicided’ but that was a couple of years ago. But I could have missed one/several….
They were saying 11AM before. I guess he rescheduled so he had time for a quickie before the presser.
Steve and his unnamed sources can’t seem to distinguish between the reporter’s style and Fallon’s. Fallon did not come off vain to me, but the reporter certainly gave his piece a “here’s the only straightshooter in the DOD” spin. From my read, that was the reporter, not Fallon, spinning that out.
Well, except for the “it’s my job to meet with foreign leaders in the Middle East” part. That was a kind of “get the hell off my back” moment.
Morning firedogs,christy.. nice marilyn song for spitzmas!
Paterson is part of the Harlem elite blacks, is legally blind, went through college without his profs and fellow students not knowing about this, and is supposed to be extraordinary person…
speculation is whether when he announces his resignation–now updated to 11:30 AM ET–Slida Wall will be beside her man….
..also, now that Spitzer is off the political landscape, the country will have to wait for my 17-year-old son (who looks like Obama) to be the first black Jewish prez…17 years from now…although he might have have to compete with Cassandra (Snarkycassandra–who I believe is 16) for the job…
A friend emailed me cartoonist Dave Horsey’s take on that from the Seattle P-I:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/.....sp?id=1725
It’s not possible, but I wish there were some way to prevent the poor wives from having to stand up there during these occasions. I guess someday there will be a first, when a cuckolded male spouse of an elected official will have to stand there. I wonder if they will? Somehow, I think the old double standard will come back into play.
Thanks for this link. I’ve been waiting for some kind of interpretation of the resignation, and an interpretation of why the Esquire article appeared — at Fallon’s behest or against his wishes. What Fallon says is no more provocative than what he’s quoted is saying (he and “several others” were trying to “keep the crazies in the their box”, and that he would resign rather than command an attack on Iran) in March 2007, when the political situation seemed more propitious for an attack on Iran.
Somehow forgot to specify- cartoon in 53 is re: Silda’s appearing next to Spitzer.
Been reading up on David Paterson- he looks to be the kind of man who should have been elected NY gov. in the 1st place.
TDS had a great bit last night about the suffering spouse. Right on. Why do these creeps make it worse by making their spouse stand by them? I know. The question answers itself.
Prairie Today: Pimps, Hoes & Presstitutes
Which is why it’s strange for a bank to monitoring his withdrawals so closely. For someone that rich, withdrawing a few grand isn’t unusual at all.
They had a target before they had a crime. In fact, they may not even have much of a real crime — just a way to embarrass him out of office so Wall Street scofflaws get off scot-free. Even Dershowitz thinks this is stinky.
She’s the one who’s pressing him to stay in office, ironically.
Biodun’s correction two threads up, it’s Slida not Silda Wall. Apologies to the lady.
And she’ll apparently be next to Spitzer @ the podium in a few.
Off to work. Read you all this evening.
The state of New York will be in very capable, politcally astute hands with Dave Paterson at the helm (IMHO). His record in the State Senate as Minority Leader during the heady Republican 90’s gives some idea. He has gained the respect of many legislators downstate and upstate, Dem and Repub. If there are allies to be found for intiatives or problems, Dave can find them. He has an organization that is strong enough to do the things politically that must be done. He is well served by his team. He will serve the people of New York well.
The correct spelling is Silda.
Quite a back’nforth w/Biodun et al. 2 threads up on the correct spelling. The NY gov.’s website certainly agrees w/you. But regardless if it’s tomato or tomahto, I wish she hadn’t felt she had to be standing next to Spitzer during the announcement. JMO.

You answered your own question. Elliot Spitzer doesn’t take a shit without a back-up plan. Think maybe there is something more to this than poking prostitutes and sniffing Elliot’s BVDs??

The better for whom, eCAHNomics??? The better for NeoCon Repuke Bruno squatting in the NY State Senate? The better for all those out-of-work prosecutors fired by the rabidly politicized (under Chimpie) Department of Injustice?? The better for whom? Little Old Ladies of the No Sex Decency League??
