Gosh, who could have predicted that close and substantial ties to lobbyists for St. McCain might lead to some uncomfortable questions. Meet John McCain’s Airbus campaign plane — and his fundraising lobbyist pals who work for Airbus. Let’s start with names:
“McCain has spoken out for years against the influence of special interests in Washington, but his campaign includes a number of prominent Washington lobbyists, including campaign manager Rick Davis, who founded a lobbying firm, and top political adviser, Charles R. Black Jr., chief executive of a well-known Washington firm. Neither of them lobbied for Airbus."
"McCain finance chairman Thomas G. Loeffler and Susan E. Nelson, who left Loeffler’s lobbying firm to be McCain’s finance director, both began lobbying for Airbus’s parent company in 2007, Senate records show. William L. Ball III, a former secretary of the Navy and frequent McCain surrogate on the trail, also lobbied for Airbus, as did John Green, who recently took a leave from Ogilvy Public Relations to serve as McCain’s legislative liaison."
“McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said the senator from Arizona and his advisers have done ‘nothing improper’ in the tanker deal. ‘John McCain was never personally lobbied on this issue,’ she said."
McCain claims the process was clean, and all he wanted was a "fair deal" for all involved — but that process has now spawned a protest filing from Boeing and a whole host of questions about the Air Force allegedly manipulating data to keep Airbus in the selection process. And that makes me wonder about the upsurge in campaign donations to McCain from related industry groups. Via HuffPo:
McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, played a crucial role in blocking the deal to build air tankers from going to U.S.-based Boeing, instead paving the path for EADS to score the loot. He framed his decision as an example of political integrity; Boeing has previously been exposed of contract abuse. But a review of campaign finance donations and lobbying records suggests that money and personal lobbying may have also been in play.
On January 15, 2007, McCain appeared at Alabama Gov. Bob Riley’s gubernatorial swearing in ceremony and formally called for multiple bidders in the tanker deal. The push for an open process had only one true beneficiary, however, and that was the Northrop Grumman/EADS consortium, which was poised to be Boeing’s sole competitor.
A day after McCain made his proclamation, the contributions began to flow. John Green, a lobbyist for EADS donated $2,100 to the senator’s presidential campaign. Ten days after that, Michelle Lammers, the "Chief of Staff" for EADS North America, gave $250 to the McCain campaign. It was her first political contribution ever. Less than a month later, the long-time head of EADS’ government affairs program, Samuel Adcock, made a $2,100 donation to McCain. And eleven days later, Ralph Crosby, the head of EADS North America, donated $2,300 himself.
All told, as documented earlier by CQ PoliticalMoneyline, McCain received more than $15,000 from EADS and its subsidiary, Airbus North America. Not only was this the highest amount received by any federal candidate, but prior to 2006, not a single employee from EADS had ever contributed to McCain. Two Airbus employees did donate nearly $4,000 for his 2000 run at the White House.
"It has a bad appearance," said Phillip Finnegan, the director of corporate analysis at The Teal Group, a market analysis and consulting firm. "Clearly, companies contribute to members of congress who are sympathetic with there position. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that it influences their position… McCain is a bit of a crusader. And when he has an issue like he had with Boeing, he pursues it. But [the contributions] definitely doesn’t look good."
Finnegan was referring to McCain’s 2003 investigation into Boeing’s billing practices and lock on the tanker business. That investigation resulted in the company losing out on a $23 billion deal to lease tankers to the Air Force. On Friday, McCain defended both his current and past positions: "I never weighed in for or against anybody that competed for the contract. All I asked for was a fair process. And the facts are that I never showed any bias in any way against anybody — except for the taxpayer."
It may have, indeed, been a clean process. But surrounding yourself with top fundraisers, campaign gurus and advisors who have lobbied for the very corporations that Sen. McCain is charged with overseeing, regulating, and holding accountable raises a whole host of appearance of impropriety questions. Questions which Sen. McCain’s dismissive brush-offs do not come close to adequately answering.
The AP, the NYTimes, and the WaPo have more.

I was thinking about Ashcroft…50 mil no bid contract…
Understand this: I intend to hold those in my party (Dems) every bit as responsible for monies received from lobbyists, as I do the Republicans.
if they do the bidding of Caligula&Co…..VERY handsome rewards await them….even if they are STALKED in their hospital rooms with fatal,or near fatal maladies “g”

Just like magic.
NEW YORK – Wall Street turned mixed in erratic trading Wednesday, a day after a huge rally triggered by the Federal Reserve’s plans to pump liquidity into distressed financial market.
Profit-taking, mixed feelings about the efficacy of the Fed’s move, and volatile oil prices made for a choppy session. Oil prices initially fell after the Energy Department said crude oil supplies rose by an unexpectedly large amount last week, but then returned on their record-setting streak to surpass $110 a barrel.
CHS:
This also puts one of McCain’s claims to integrity in a new light: his opposition to the tanker lease deal.
401ks……new slippery slopes
Intergrity….that is a new Japanese automobile no?looking for integrity in American politics leads me to one man,and woman right now…Barrak and Michele Obama
Sounds suspiciously like his reasons for writing to the FCC on behalf of Miss Vicki’s clients.
Sometimes, asking for “a fair process” favors one party. It certainly seems to do so here.
McCain’s campaign: Infested with lobbyists.

OT, looks like they may have Eve Carson’s killer.
The belief here is that I succumb to your suggestion. In our home we like Mr. & Mrs. Obama.
OT, help needed. Sorry to interrupt.
I have been in a toobz-deprived state for several weeks due to travel to a very distant land (they had the toobz, but I did not have the time). As I return to the Lake–hi all!–I learn that Geraldine Ferraro had created a new high in lows in discourse among dems about dems. My source, below. I don’t want to stop this conversation, so could someone tell me if there has been an FDL discussion that will help me understand the situation, and/or take responsible action. For example, has there been a discussion here about whether she truly as she says is exercising her first amendment rights or is she being backed by the HRC campaign?

McCHill are showing us just what crossing that threshold of “commander in chief” means. No corruption passed up; no ethical standard upheld.
Lotsa lip service, tho.
Spare me.
More and better Democrats in Congress in ‘08…just in case.
If Mr. Obama can survive the invectives, false assertions and vituperative insunuations of Hillary Clinton, he will be our next president.
i love him and his beautiful family…since he cares deeply for them,he will care deeply about the country ,world, and enviorement they grow up in..imo

Good deal!

John McCain represents mummified politics.
Christy, thanks for this great post on a sordid man. I guess since he traded in his loyal disabled first wife for money, I shouldn’t be surprised he traded away American defense workers’ jobs – for $15,000.
Gottcha. My friend. ;0)
I did not know his first wife was disabled.
McCain is a double-talking warmonger who’ll give us a Third Bush Term, with even more radical judicial appointments and more tax breaks for corporations and the richest among us.
Americans need to understand that the John McCain loved by TradMed isn’t the Real McCain. We’ll need to tell them one-by-one if that’s the only way.
Here’s a great place to get informed: The McCain Briefing Book, courtesy of Working Families.
More like vampire politics since he wants Reagan to rise from the dead.
She was in a horrible car accident, I think.
“McCain has spoken out for years against the influence of special interests in Washington, but…
welcome to “The Double-Talk Express”!!
almost died
Very good. ;0)
Does McCain, Graham, and Lieberman’s taxpayer funded congressional trip to europe to meet with political leaders and pump up McCain’s image on foreign policy count as misuse of public funds, or even wasteful spending which McCain is supposed to be against?
And wasn’t it Newtie who served his former wife with divorce papers while she was in the hospital?
Christy – thanks for those links, those two from WaPo must’ve sneaked in while the gatekeepers were at the Gridiron dinner – wow !
let’s see, he now has all of Boeing, the congr. delegations of two states and the AFL-CIO after his pasty ass,
and could all you bobbleheads put down the ribs long enough to answer just what in the hell a self described free trader is doing anywhere near govt subsidized companies ?!?!?
Maybe the Senate Committee on Governmental Operations should have a hearing on this — oh, never mind.
Christy; would you comment on why McStrayCoque would not be an “Agent of a foreign government” or “agent acting for a foreign corporation” with such a deal as the Airbus v. Boeing?
Found a nice little tibit this morning from niemanwatchdog.
Lobbyist for Saudi Arabia:
What part of his vow “in sickness and in health” did McCow not understand?
Thank you Christy for keeping the bright light on old McBranded.h/t tw3k

heh, speak of the cow!
Not to suggest that McCain participated in anything like this, but there is currently a scandal in Canada surrounding payments of $300,000 made to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in the early 1990s by KarlHeinz Schreiber, who lobbied for Airbus in a purchase of jets by Air Canada, which at the time was a Crown Corporation. The Liberal Govt investigated this in the mid 1990s and attempted to subpoena Swiss bank records – Mulroney sued the govt for libel and won an apology and the payment of his legal fees, but the govt at the time did not know about the $300,000 payments, which were made in three separate payments of $100,000 in $1000 bills in large envelopes. Mulroney now does not deny receiving the money, nor that it was in cash, nor that he did not report it on his taxes for several years, but states that it was not for Airbus, but in relation to lobbying work he did after leaving office for Thyssen, another Schreiber client – he cited approaches he made to both Francois Mitterand and Boris Yeltsin, who are of course dead and not around to ask. This is going to be the subject of a public inquiry in Canada in the next few months – stay tuned! Lockheed anyone? BAE?
Funny photo of John McCain and his lobbyist “friends” here:

Had to re-snip a new McCow. The first one choked on a lobbyists’ wallet.
What a *downer*.
I have a thing about loyalty toward my lady. It’s inviolable.
I think this cow’s got legs.
Ah, as they say in “The Princess Bride”, …true love, kiddo…true love.
yes, he was. they seem to all play from the same playbook, don’t they?
I just had a call from the school parking lot from Lahoma. She has a flat tire on her p-up. I am surveying the boys in my HS seventh period algebra math class. I believe I have the problem solved.
nice one, with lots of influence detail. There is no way McCain is going to side step the influence peddling this cycle.
But as I approach 62, the impact of another Republican in the White House on my 9-year old daughter, my 39-year old son,
randy old fart, huh? A 30 year separation between children? h/t to you sir, and your credibility, to me, is enhanced. Word from a man’s man…
Once we get a nominee gotta do a rawhide version :D
Christy:
Great post. You know, this McCain fella should not have a chance in hell. Has Kirk posted that piece yet re: how someone with McCain’s medical condition is not fit to be prez?
Legs suited for chasing the wild lobbyist.
John McCain and Joe Lieberman. From where does their campaign, etc., money derive?
But this proves that once you get beyond the wingnut taking points…. everyone has the same issues. Maybe in different order but they are the same….
mine are healthcare, Iraq, economy and energy….
I am wondering what Olbermann will say tonight in his special comment.
Geraldine Ferracist, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
-G
P.S. It looks like Al Sadr’s militias may have called an end to the cease fire on their own.
Why would McCain purposely undermine an American company. It’s like GOP really really wants to destroy America.
I am glad this Spitzer character is leaving. I really dislike him.
Everyone loves it. Scissors and glue at the ready. ;-)
I dislike Geraldine.
Is Geraldine still working for Hillary?
I won’t tell Flip Wilson.

I am wondering what Olbermann will say tonight in his special comment.
Well, for better or worse, fairly or unfairly, I look for him to flay the skin off of Hillary and her campaign staff…
Hey kiddo, x= -b etc. won’t get that spare tire on. ;-)
yes
what was flip wilson as geraldine’s famous tagline?
That’s funny. I like it. I remember those Geraldine routines of Wilson’s quite well. ;0)
hope he doesn’t focus solely on the words and shines an intense light on the rovian wedge they’re wielding
thought of you when I saw this yesterday :D
The devil made me do it.
That’s it thanks! I found another: What You See Is What You Get!
watching MSNBC where Lynn Sweet (Chicago Sun-Times) mentions that the primaries tend to favor Clinton, while caucuses tend to favor Obama, it occurs to me that that shows that the Obama supporters are more willing to go the extra mile for their candidate…
here ya go
I believe it also shows that the Obama campaign may have organized itself to win delegates according to the rules, state by state, regardless of their “boutique” status or “significance” to the Clinton strategists.
It will be unfortunate if the candidate whose campaign was organized to win delegates according to the rules, who also won delegates according to the rules, is denied the nomination by superdelegates, I think.
This is where we are, folks. As usual, Digby gets it right on:
“If the Bush admnistration attacks Iran as lame ducks, based upon another laptop full of questionable secret evidence, they will have proven that the office of the president of the United States is basically a four (or eight) year dictatorship. But then, it is, isn’t it? As long as he has 34 solid Senate cronies in safe seats, he can get away with anything. If he has a 72 year old would-be successor who is unlikely to get elected, then he might as well go for those oil fields while he has the chance. With oil over a hundred dollars a barrel and rising, an economy on the brink and an approval rating in the 20s, this would be the perfect time shoot the moon and show the world exactly what the unitary American president is capable of.”
Or, when people discuss the relative merits of the candidates face-to-face Obama wins.
I sent three varsity football players out to assuage the Lahoma tire situation. Result: Spare tire on, Lahoma home. Football player reward: One day riding our horses. And supper and a swim in our pool come summer (they get to do this with or without tire problems anyway).
Back on topic
It is always astonishing how cheaply people can be bought in politics and espionage.
McBook!
Slow down, Kiddo … I have to find my Thesaurus … *g*
I’m keeping a fire extinguisher near my beautiful TV when I watch KO tonight … things could get very heated …
Geraldine, yo. I’m a half breed. Want to make something out of it?
Heated? I hope so. My friend. ;0)

Iraq sees over a dozen US soliders killed in a matter of days and increasing attacks on Iraqis.
OT. Pakistan worried by increase in attacks in country.
Worries that Afghanistan mission is in worse shape than Iraq.
Darfur seen to be reverting to greater warfare.
Bush pat’s his own back on his great freedom agenda.
I keep wondering if some GOP operative has gotten to all these Dems and given them some koolaid with “teh stupids” in it
((( kirk )))
As I was reading this post, I thought of you … IOKIYGAR … that made a spew a really great cup of coffee the other day … really worth it, I might add … *g*
A number of McCain’s top “former” lobbyist advisers are working for his campaign “for free”, lobbyist code for “deferred compensation”.
The template was crafted by Bush, who has employed hundreds of top lobbyists throughout the government to turn erstwhile regulatory bodies into corporatefare enablers. He also expanded the universe of political appointees by including among them jobs that normally go to top civil servants, especially top legal slots. A former top lawyer for the FDA, who “returned” to private practice in 2004, left a legacy that led to the recent Supreme Court-anointed immunity from suit for medical device manufacturers whose devices had been approved by the FDA. Other examples abound, like whiskey bottles in a Capone warehouse.
The pundits are correct: St. McCain is running for Bush’s third term, except that he’s a more excitable, less inhibited version.
need to make a large sheet metal one. mooodern art!
Along these lines I am suspect of at least one of the Democratic candidates for president.
Ha, good one! The book of McRevelations.
Bush should start paying him in Euros …
Just gotta tell ya, my 9th grade algebra teacher was my all time fave.
Set me on a the right track. Your sage comments always remind me of him.
Thanks. Say hi to lahoma for me. Oh, and the football team. ;-)
Another example from today’s WaPo, front page: Against advice from its professional staff, EPA administrators set ozone standards considerably higher. Why break the law when you can loan the government an executive and have them rewrite it?
Is the DLC a de facto lobbyist group?
I have a lot of rusty metal roofing in the barn. Now I know what to do with it, thanks.
Sorry for late reply – cleaning kitchen. (reading about McCain make me feel dirty.)
I didn’t know either until this campaign cycle. She was a former beauty queen who stood by him the whole time he was in the Hanoi Hilton (IIRC). She suffered the disabling car accident while he was a POW.
I can’t find the linky, but McCain glommed onto current welathy spouse when he first met her – discomfited those with him by his obvous interest while (IIRC) still married.
He was by all accounts magnanimous in divorce (re assets) – but he also knew he was goiing to be very wealthy. FWIW, the disabled spouse he abandodned speaks well of him. IIRC his kids (or some of them) thought he was a shit, and were very slow to reconcile.
Newtie served divorce papers on his wife while she was in hospital for cancer (for chemo IIRC). McCain didn’t do that (he was a POW during his wife’s accident/hospitalization) – but he treated his spouse every bit as callously.
Party of family values my ass – the only family ties the GOP powers value are the ones attached to checkbooks.
back to the Boeing deal – it doesn’t just hit Boeing employees – these contracts mean everything to subs – fabricators, mom and pop machine shops, tiers of small businesses counting on these contracts
and where in bloody hell is that champion of small business, Chamber of Commerce ?
OT – Oil – all-time high
Dollar – all-time low
Got a song for that one, Georgie?
Can you imagine hearing your kid say, ‘when I grow up, I want to be a lobbyist’?
“We are the Champions” perhaps?
Some of McCain’s target audience might not share his views …
Obama Receives Endorsement of Flag Officers from Army, Navy and Air Force
O/T Client #6 is Duke of Westminster, richest man in Great Britain and Prince William’s godfather
[Mod Note; a link to a source is very helpful when making claims like that.]
How could what McCain did be improper? He’s a Republican – the party of the corporations by the corporations (and also for the obscenely wealthy too).
But the fundamentalsh are shtrong.

Here’s the link for that story … Client #6

Ferraro has resigned from Clinton’s campaign — here’s her letter to HRC:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/
I thought HRC said she is not part of the campaign?
There is a hearing on Cspan3 now with Ashcroft giving testimony. Something about “monitors”? Does this have anything to do with this?
gasp…hillary gasp lied?!?!?!?!
They both denied at first, but I guess we have the truth(sort of) now.
You have to love the mantel of martyrdom she has drapped around herself
Unhappy with that bit. In a past life I spent much time and effort in making sure the (Boeing) Apache was supplied to, but assembled in, Britain. It was the best solution to our Army’s requirement. Why should not the USA run to the same rules, if the best product happens to have been designed in Europe? Globalisation and free trade works both ways, you know.
And if you are going to get all ethical about this programme, remember there only was a competition because the original corrupt Boeing contract was set aside. Remember Darleen Druyun.According to Wikipedia, Mc Cain sure will. Complex isn’t it?
Boeing has major operations in Washington, Missouri, Illinois, and Southern California (in heavily Republican districts where folks like Issa and Jerry Lewis reside). The first two States are generally thought to be “competitive” this November (McCain was probably already going to win Alabama, me-thinks). So this could be very ugly for him now that it’s out of the bag.
Well she isn’t anymore. I guess that she still doesn’t see what she’s done wrong. Utterly unrepentant. But then why resign? Why not insist that Clinton fire you? Or challenge Clinton on not being honest about Obama?
Here’s REALLY what I think is going on. It’s all about the pressures that various Superdelegates that have said they will vote against their constituents wishes are facing. Apparently Hillary is facing a lot of defections.
But to be quite honest, this isn’t simply coming from black representatives in black communities…it’s happening with Reps of other races in non-black or mixed neighborhoods that supported Obama. I know Doris Matsui, as well as the Bay Area contingent of legislators are facing the same heat that Diane Watson and others face in LA. You see most thought that Obama would be washed out of the race by the time it rolled around to California. Hillary twisted their arms a nd they signed on, a bit prematurely.
In addition, if you go back and look at the record I’ll bet that you’ll find that the biggest critics of Obamas black “authenticity” came from certain quarters. So the “race card” was being played a long time ago…except then it was because Obama was not “black enough”.
Now many African-Americans are accepting that Obama shares a cultural experience that, in part, mirrors their own. It isn’t about race…but whether the candidate has shared a mirrored experience and can use that to help make the country more multi-ethnic and multi-cultural.
