Let's play a little game of compare and contrast.
For the past two days, Glenn Reynolds has been furiously pecking away on the Spitzer story (and these are just the edited highlights):
UPDATE: More Spitzer comedy, with links to Spitzer jokes from Letterman, Colbert, et al. Don't you think he wishes the writers' strike were still on?
ANOTHER UPDATE: Unintentional comedy from Alan Dershowitz..."the outcry against Spitzer was not because he was some man seeing a prostitute, but because he was a guy who puts prostitutes in jail seeing a prostitute."
ROGER KIMBALL: "My own feeling is that there are so many reasons to dislike Eliot Spitzer that I would hate the issue of hypocrisy to obscure his many other, more heinous faults...
SILDA SPITZER JOINS PISSED-OFF POLITICAL WIVES CLUB, plans Senate bid.
THE EXAMINER: "There is no honorable alternative to Spitzer’s resignation." Which doesn't narrow the field as much for him as it might for some . . . .
UPDATE: No love for Spitzer from The New York Times:
A TAX ANGLE to the Spitzer mess?
Meanwhile, it looks as if Spitzer's real crimes were financial, not sexual.
Meanwhile thoughts on the hypocrisy.
UPDATE: Stephen Green: "Cleaning up New York one prostitute at a time. Sometimes maybe even two at a time."
ANOTHER UPDATE: Heh. Read the whole thing.
MORE: Big roundup from Professor Bainbridge.
STILL MORE: Heh: “Prostitute Admits Link to Elliott Spitzer; Resigns From Escort Service in Disgrace.”
Also: Clinton Declines Comment on Spitzer.
MORE STILL: "Maybe Vitter should have made things right - and changed his political affiliation before getting caught."
FINALLY: A Wall Street reader doesn't want Spitzer to resign...
And another game of Name That Party! at ABC.
Plus, a funny...
And, Governor Giuliani?
All in all, Putz has written 14 posts (including updates) and just over 700 words on the subject since the story broke yesterday. Impressive!
Now let's take a look at Putz's entire output on the David Vitter (R-LA) hooker story:
I HAVEN'T PAID MUCH ATTENTION to the D.C. Madam story...
Yep, still totally non-partisan.
UPDATE
Still going. Just like Pavlov's dog.

A Twit From Hell!
IOKIYAR.
The only way Spitzer’s going to make it right with Instacracker is if he goes and shoots an old man in the face.
The exposure of Governor Spitzer’s unfortunate proclivities at this time should give any Democratic opposition pause. Those in the House who would actually defy His Royal Shrubbiness and not grant immunity to the poor, helpless and defenseless telecoms for doing something that he asked them to do, those House members who act in such defiance are hereby warned: “This Could Happen to YOU”
i think KKKKarl,loves his man package too…ah being a paid propagandist…life is so easy just do newspeak
goddammit, Spitzer, get the hell out of the way - stop providing ammunition for all of these fucking Republicans to stand up and scream about “morality”.
(even though it appears that, having been a while, they’re a little rusty at that game).
And - both of the D candidates should be calling for his resignation as well, for, despite the *mountains* of evidence re Republican filth (largely un or under-reported), fucking middle America still sees the R party as the party of “family values”.
This tragic, or at least unfortunate, situation is actually a golden opportunity for the D’s to step up to the plate and re-claim the moral high ground.
because that is what corporate Merika pays for,Brian Willams dressed in 5,000 suits,and Lou Dobbs,etc etc…that is how the media reports it…the dems are sleazeballs repukes ABOVE REPROACH…right mister Guckert?
There is no moral high ground in the public figures caught ###### (gasp!) ####### with someone/thing other than their wife. (yes, I wrote wife instead of spouse. Hmm…) Everyone needs sex. Is this so revolutionary? Just keep your hands off the kids and pets and you should be OK.
Talk about distractions from doing the important work of the people, by the people, to the people…
Glenn Reynolds? Isn’t he dead?
Glenn Reynolds? Isn’t he dead?
Physically or morally?
Ahhh, the family values folks are back in full swing. It’s been strange without them during the years of GOP perversions.
Indeed.
“…Brian Williams dressed in 5,000 suits…”
Sorry, I can’t stop giggling at the image of Bri dressed in 5000 suits. He would look SO fat!
Amazing what rubbing two brain cells together can produce
The Times reporting I found a bit breathless and too willing to find fault by omitting relevant questions by assuming they’ve been answered. (Like Congress over domestic spying).
One thing the Times reporting glossed over too quickly is what caused the IRS, as opposed to state regulators or the FBI, to be reviewing Spitzer’s current financial transactions, as opposed to, say, those related to prior-year tax returns. Do banks report, do the feds monitor, all transactions of the independently wealthy? Wealthy Democrats? All governors? Wealthy Democratic governors in Hillary’s home state? Or, does TIA permit all of the above?
How big or frequent were they? Spitzer is reportedly a multi-millionaire. He must routinely have a large number of relatively substantial financial transactions. What was suspicious enough to attract a federal investigation? Was it simply that Spitzer did some of the things he’s accused of and found them so much fun that he did a lot of them, at thousands per hour?
Finally, the prosecution’s kitchen sink approach (the archaic and prudish Mann Act is the go to statute for political prosecutions) resembles more the attitude of “Let’s get Capone on something, maybe not paying his taxes, that’s a federal beef,” than mere thoroughly doing a non-partisan prosecutor’s job. Regardless of the underlying facts, this pattern of prosecution - and the immediate, detailed and widespread “news” coverage of it - closely resembles the pattern worked out in Alabama in connection with the GOP’s dirty and relentless attack on former governor Don Siegelman.
I see you’ve been slumming, BT. Find any street walkers over there?
This whole thing stinks and the media are covering the BushCo’s dirty tricks.
Talk about distractions from doing the important work of the people, by the people, to the people…
Sure there’s a moral high ground. Resign!! Demand that he resign! “Hypocritical” and “illegal” are the moral values best left to the R party.
And as to the work of the people, well this is 2008, it’s an election year, a very *important* election, and the D’s don’t need this albatross hanging around.
I most certainly believe it was a hit job - but it was successful thanks to Spitzer’s stupidity. Sorry, Eliot, ya gotta go, and it should have been yesterday.
If the shoe were on the other foot, if Spitzer were a prominent Republican in a close election where one vote could keep the GOP in the White House, there would have been no investigation. If a rogue, ethical USA launched one anyway, and the press got wind of it, the defense would line up like this:
1) It’s unproven, the governor’s innocent until proven guilty;
2) the wire constituted an illegal search (hypocrisy intentional);
3) it’s all political payback;
4) the prostitute was a good friend who needed help with hospital bills;
5) the prostitute is an illegal alien who should be deported; we should thank the governor for outing another criminal;
6) the prostitute should be prosecuted for not giving fair value for money paid;
7) the governor’s already been saved again by the grace of a forgiving lord and we need him in to stave off another 9/11; and
8) tough: he stays.
So the question is not only, “Can Obama Take a Punch and Hit Back,” it’s whether the Democrats can. Regardless of who sits in the White House. Because the Siegelman/Spitzer strategem, based on no facts or good ones, is one of many GOP rear guard actions we will see constantly. All aimed at keeping accountability away from the criminal enterprise known as the Bush Administration.
OT - but I got an email wanting me to sign a petition. While I probably agree with his position, I’m not signing because it seems like Harry thinks all that he has to do is ask people to sign his petitions. The Senate needs a real leader, not Harry Reid.
Alas, needling Putz is a really bad habit of mine.
I would like to hear/see everyone who is asked about spitzer to tie craig & vittner into the answer-
You can do it so I don’t have to. *g*
I would like to hear/see everyone who is asked about spitzer to tie craig & vittner into the answer-
oh now you’re asking for political sophistication from the D’s?
What a bunch of cock-eyed optimists we are…
Hey hi howdy firepups! OT good news for you all, Donita Sparks is having her new CD reviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air today at 3pm ET in a little less than an hour
This thought has occurred to me as well. Repeatedly. The media pile-on over this issue is a bit too vehement and immediate for just another scandal. Very Lewinskyesque. Strange that this type of witch hunt is never seen when the offender has an R next to his/her name.
hey JayT! This Spitzer mess is a real doozy. Hey at least he was having sex with adult women and not teenage boys like the Republicans, eh?
Donita - woo hoo!
Spitzer should hang tough. I’m not saying this will blow over, but the costs will be borne by him and perhaps the New York democratic party’s search for a majority in the NY Senate. There’s no downside to his holding out now the news it out. His life leaves him, so be it. No worse than Rudi, who set a pretty high bar for this sort of thing. The Dems should lay low and shut up, and let the thugs do the talking. People will remember what they tried to do to Clinton and what they have done to little boys and girls and Congressional pages. This is a three-day wonder, as long as Spitzer holds tough. And I think he will. He knows the game.
This is right on the money, if he just shuts the fuck up and resigns the damage will be controlled.
Hey at least he was having sex with adult women and not teenage boys like the Republicans, eh?
yeah - if it wasn’t for that goddamned David Vitter, the press wouldn’t have know how to handle this at all.
Who’d have thought thought that having an “R”, or a “D” after your name would have such, ummm, ramifications?
Though I am curious about what will come out on the financial side.
Off point, sorry, but a more important point: Ferarro. She fudged the story in the 84 campaign about why her husband John Zacarro would not release his tax returns (something the Clintons jointly refuse to do in this campaign). Now Ferarro claims that Barack is our affirmative action candidate. As if Ferarro was ever a serious VP candidate. It is now time to take on the Clintons’ continuing pattern of degogatory racist pandering.
If I never have time to Lurk at FDL for the rest of the month, this, and this alone had validated my time as well spent. Thanks a bunch! :-D
Hey Glenn, consult your doctor if your erection lasts more than four hours.
Jeebus …
gotta disagree, fini. See my comment at #7, above.
I was all for Obama demanding the resignation of the advisor who called Hillary a “monster”, and I think that there are better points to be scored in having our presidential candidates call for Spitzer’s resignation than in sticking our heads in the sand and hoping it goes away.
Sometimes a foot-soldier or two’s gotta fall…
Right on Fini fini!

The JTA is putting a different spin on this than Reynolds, or anyone, for that matter. Plus, I don’t know if this has emerged elsewhere yet:
But the different spin JTA involves the Israeli who ran the escort company, and possible payback for Spitzer’s prosecution of the National Council of Young Israel and the World Jewish Congress.
Reynolds turn will come. In the meantime, he’s just another loud mouthed hypocrite who adds exactly nothing to public discourse.
While it may be comforting to say Spitzer is just a hypocrite, it’s just not ethically sound. A hypocrite acts contrary to his/her stated beliefs or opinions or puts on a false mask of virtue or religious commitment. Spitzer has prosecuted people and, thereby, gotten them imprisoned for commiting the same or similar acts that he has committed. That’s far worse than simple hypocrisy. That’s acting as if you were above the law, you know, like most Republicans. An apology isn’t all that’s required, not only does he need to resign or be driven from office, but he needs to be disbarred and prosecuted just as he did to others.
Superb post. Thx.
