Meanwhile, the NY GOP is threatening to initiate impeachment proceedings if Governor Spitzer does not resign voluntarily, while Diaper Dave Vitter, Larry "Wide Stance" Craig, Deadeye Dick Cheney, and George "Too Many Impeachable Offenses To Highlight Just One" Bush don't seem to be going anywhere. So let's just sum up, shall we?
o Democratic president consorts with intern: Impeachment, no conviction.
o Democratic governor consorts with prostitutes (overtones of unsafe sex): Choice of resignation or impeachment.
o Republican senator consorts with prostitutes (overtones of diaper-wearing): No big deal.
o Republican senator solicits gay sex in men's room: Human punchline, Ethics Committee admonishment.
o Republican vice president shoots hunting buddy in the face: No big deal. Victim apologizes.
o Republican president starts war under false pretenses, tortures prisoners, wiretaps American citizens without warrants, etc, etc, etc.: Impeachment "off the table."
o Republican-appointed CENTCOM commander displays sound tactical and strategic judgment that stands in the way of Dubya's shiny new war: Forced to resign.
Lesson learned: If you're a Republican or a Republican appointee, you can pretty much do whatever you want, provided you never, ever put duty ahead of loyalty.
Or get indicted. Chasing underage kids is fine - but if you get caught, you're on your own.

sort of, kinda OT…our local weekly free paper, the Carmel Pine Cone introduced their own presidential (on-line) poll and is stunningly good news for Obama’s campaign. Our small village of Carmel, CA population is well below 4,000 residents about half of whom are retired, and dedicated voters predominently Republican. Our longtime mayor is a retired CIA officer and as conservative as it gets. The poll was published within the last few hours and Obama enjoys a dramatic lead. I assume the poll will stay up through the spring. Below is the linky:

Naw, relax a little. This is just a tough campaign. Our party is in infinitely better shape than the Republicans, and there is nothing they can say that won’t be small potatoes compared to what McCain and the R’s are going to say in the general. The more of this stuff that can be disposed of now, the better. Neither candidate has discredited themselves, nor wilted under attack. They’re being tempered by a little fire. It will help in the general, no matter who the nominee is in the end.

I’ve almost always voted FOR somebody, unless - like often the case with overwhelming GOP favorites here in Alaska - you knew the Democrat was going to be creamed. Then, knowing your candiate couldn’t possibly win, it was, in essence, a vote against the winner. I think? That for-against thing is sort of confusing.
The House should have been able to override that vote.

I’m guessing that there was something that didn’t go far enough in prohibiting torture for Dennis and Maxine. I don’t know specifically what that might have been, but that is their style.

We were talking about that today while I was working at Diane Benson’s campaign HQ. People revved up, GOP folks, with time on their hands, no candidate to vote for, and hypnotized by Rush - they’re LimBots - into causing mischief. They wouldn’t ordinarily do it, but these 8 to 12% of open Dem primary voters who are showing up because they were told to by their machine, are doing so because they hate women, or people of color, or both.
