I wish people would stop pissing on Caligula. Remember, most of the reports we have about him were from senatorial class Romans and their toad eating historians. They were pissed because the emperor was impinging on their upper class privileges. The commoners and equestrians had a slightly different take on things, as did the slaves. (The senatorials hated Nero too, and he was the one who gave slaves the right to sue their masters in court. You can feel the love.)

Besides, Caligula was much smarter than Bush. When we invaded Iraq, I figured Bush would do the Caligula invades England thing. Rig up some fake weapons of mass destruction, maybe an old washing machine (which actually could destroy a lot of clothes). Then, shoot of a whole lot ordinance into the Shatt al Arab, declare victory and come home. Hey, it worked for Caligula. He got his victory over Neptune parade, and his legions weren’t bogged down in some god forsaken fen for all eternity.

One of the things I hate about Bush is that I often find myself putting in a few good words for monsters like Caligula and Hitler. Try watching The Great Escape and not thinking about our stalag in Guantanamo. It really sucks.

Bridges falling down Democratic state Opponents resigns on good terms; Bottom Line Al wins, please read. Al Rawks I love it SNL on the Senate floor with rapier wit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Me think the lady doth protest to much.

Al Franken’s Senate Opponent Drops Out

Tuesday, March 11, 2008 1:13 PM

By: Patrick Condon Article Font Size

Al Franken’s main competition for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate dropped out Monday, giving the comedian-turned-candidate a major boost.

Franken and lawyer Mike Ciresi were vying for the party’s endorsement to take on Republican Sen. Norm Coleman in November. Coleman is seeking a second term.

Franken has raised millions more in campaign funds and lined up most of the important union endorsements, but Ciresi’s impressive resume as a trial attorney and personal wealth positioned him as a potential spoiler to Franken’s ambition.

Ciresi’s statement that he was dropping out indicated he didn’t think he could catch up to Franken’s lead in rounding up the support of Democratic delegates, who will confer their endorsement at the state party convention in June. Both Franken and Ciresi vowed not to run in the primary election without the party endorsement.

“In my judgment, continuing the endorsement race would only lead to an unnecessary floor fight. It is time to step aside,” Ciresi’s statement said.

Franken issued a statement, praising Ciresi for a “well-fought campaign,” citing his “passion for social justice, his command of the issues facing our nation, and his devotion to the people of Minnesota…”

Franken said he looked forward to working with Ciresi to make sure the party wins the seat.

In his statement, Ciresi didn’t endorse Franken or the other major candidate, college professor and peace activist Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer.

Franken won’t have to contend with Ciresi tapping into his own deep pockets to sway Democratic delegates. Ciresi recently loaned his own campaign $2 million, and he and campaign surrogates were growing more vocal about Franken’s history of off-color jokes _ arguing that Coleman and Republicans would be able to use them against Franken in the general election.

Nelson-Pallmeyer has also shown strength at local party meetings, and on Friday his campaign claimed it was ahead of Ciresi in securing commitments from Democratic delegates. Nelson-Pallmeyer has also vowed to abide by the party’s convention endorsement.

“This sets up a clear contrast between me and Al Franken, and that helps my campaign,” Nelson-Pallmeyer said, predicting that most Ciresi supporters would gravitate his way.

Ciresi is best known as the chief litigator in the state of Minnesota’s successful 1998 lawsuit against big tobacco, one of numerous multimillion-dollar settlements and awards under his belt.

Final report on the run-off for Julia Carson’s seat:

Name Votes Vote %
Andre D. Carson (D) 45,598 54.04%
Jon Elrod (R) 36,322 43.04%
Sean Shepard (L) 2,419 2.87%
445 of 445 precincts reporting

Elrod still refusing to concede - *s*

good win, big win, and if GregB is still here, he saw right up front the blatant horrible racism still existing here (and his comment to the IndyStar was an instant classic).

Again, kudos the those in charge in Indianapolis, because this was a paper ballot, and they got the full results out quickly.

Good night, if I just ignore the Georgie song…

I only learned about Chlamydia when I was a graduate student in college in the early 1980’s…the hard way. That was back in the days before the AIDS crisis had reached the level of information of today. Fortunately I was fairly monogamous and when I became symptomatic got treatment…and told my partner. She had NO idea since only guys get the obvious effects. She got treatment (antibiotics) as well. I saw her a few years later and we discussed in very hushed tones the “incident”. She had two darling daughters and she thanked me for not simply walking away from it all.
