How bad is it for Republicans? They can't even hold Denny Hastert's seat.
For National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.), every week seems to bring a new set of problems. On Saturday night, things got even worse.
With Democrat Bill Foster’s victory in the Illinois 14th District special election, Democrats now hold the seats occupied only 21 months ago by former Speaker Dennis Hastert (Ill.) and former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (Texas) — the two GOP lawmakers who ran the House from 1998 to 2006.
Losing two wars and generally flushing the country down the shitter does have its price.
And I love this:
“By itself, this would not be that big of a deal, but coupled with everything else it will just deflate the [House Republican] Conference,” said an aide to one top GOP lawmaker. “And symbolically, losing Hastert’s seat is like the toppling of the Saddam statue in Baghdad for Republicans.”
But yet Scott Pelley doesn't object when St. McCain tells him "60 Minutes" that all he has to do is remind people that he's a Republican and Obama and Clinton are Democrats, and everything will be cool.

Hi, Blue Texan.
three words BT,
hee hee hee
Maybe, just maybe sanity is returning to this country.
Good morning Blue Texan
Great news indeed but I was fortunate to have spared my brain and not lost 15 minutes of my life (that I wouldn’t be able to get back) watching McInsane.
And still dems continue to cower before the boy king.
They flushed the country and now we get to flush them. No matter how long or hard you polish a turd it’s still a turd.
Peace Love Light
Hey, BT, is Texas “relevant” [i.e., Clinton “won” the popular vote] or “irrelevant” [i.e., Obama won the caucuses and the total number of delegates]?
I’m convinced it is.
Sorry O/T : Waxman Calls for Investigations of Blackwater Tax Dodge
Now back to our thread topic *g*
the Washington Post gave this story about 2 column inches on page 7 yesterday. If I wasn’t intently poring through the entire paper I would have missed it.
Wouldn’t want to let the rest of the world know that Republicans are losers…
Maybe their getting use to the drugs in the water, and are wakeing up.
awfully cynical of you, Jim.
If loosing Denny’s seat was a problem..this is a disaster..

Even the Thug base is going to be unhappey with a $80-100 fill-up for the pick-up.
Pulling down Saddam’s statue was a staged, made-for-TV event by the Army.

Losing Hasturd’s seat is very real for the Repubs. Well, we got the “more” part covered with Foster’s win. Not sure we got the “better.” Let’s keep Foster honest!
yeah, our government at work
Hastert always was a creep. Here’s hoping for a big sweep in the next election cycle!
And regarding Obama or Clinton: Either will be great presidents as long as they appoint great people in their cabinet.
As in, let’s make sure we don’t let in any rats sympathetic to the GOP machine. Let’s make sure that the same donors and same creeps who were supporting Bush for the past 7 years don’t just change their armband to blue because red is now unpopular.
He did? I think that will be the outcome but the caucus situation is still a mess..for the latest..here
With all this good news for the sane people who decided to moblise, following these seven years of crazy despotic rule, I dread a huge october surprise in the form of a mushroom shaped cloud in Iran…
I hope that Cheney’s plane will be diverted to Vermont’s capital during his upcoming trip.
“And symbolically, losing Hastert’s seat is like the toppling of the Saddam statue in Baghdad for Republicans.”
And the toppling of that statue was not only symbolic, but totally staged (Rendon Group?)
Jeebus, the R’s are just plain stupid. Occasionally, I wish I could dump 30 or 40 IQ points, then I could be a Republican, and life would be so much simpler. Black or white - no shades of gray…
Hope CBS was flooded with letters, faxes, emails, phone calls concerning Pelley’s softball questioning of McCain. The MSM once again proves it’s worthlessness in providing the citizenry with the information necessary for making informed decisions.
Maybe that’s been the problem all along–sedatives being pumped into Congress’ water supply./s
Hastert always was a creep.
And if Sibel Edmonds ever gets the chance to testify, you will be able to add the word “toast”, or maybe “convicted felon” to your description of Hastert.
LOL here is a link to the comment section of 60 minutes
Looks like the voters flipped Denny’s Hasturd the Super Bird!
Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck:

I wonder if the recent articles about Bandar Bush and his wife’s connection to 9/11 (and threats to the Brits) have anything to do with his trip? Gotta wonder.
indeed…snicker snicker
Why would Rove think that, regarding the Plame case, “I fully expect to be indicted by the end of the year”???? Is Fitz back on it?
Could it be in regards to the US Attorneys firings..?
McCain sold his soul to the Bush family and now believes in the power of Diebold.
What’s happening with oil prices reminds me of what I often had to say when pledging in college.
“Thank you sir! May I have another?”
I hear the sound of scales dropping from eyes all over the country.
“Whu—? Hey, where’s my country? It didn’t look like this 7 years ago! What the hell happened?”
Pelley is really tricky. He’s a lot like John Harwood or Jake Tapper, where they can really thread the needle well and appear fair much of time, but are deep down most concerned about preserving the BigMoney storylines for the electorate to follow.
Pelley showed his true colors a while back when he was using “Democrat Party” throughout a report. This is one of the surest signs, since they know exactly what they’re doing when using that. The Noize Machine is trying hard to make this the norm in our discourse, and we must call out anyone that uses it. Even William F Buckley wouldn’t use it, and continued to use the correct DemocratIC Party:

It’ll be interesting to see how that works out for him! I can’t wait! *g*
Very true hence our (mr wobbs and I) response whenever we hear “democrat party” which goes something like, “oh, your a member of the republic party?”
You’d be surprised (or not) how pissy they get when you throw it back at them.
Oh please oh please let Sibel speak!
Hey Blue Texan - what a wonderful analogy
and what Politico did not say was the $1.3M Cole had to spend in IL-14 was 20% of their cash on hand.
Welcome to the ‘New Math’ suckas!
OT
Gov. Spitzer, NY, involved in prostitution ring, according to CNBC. Announcement in 7 minutes.
Yeah, I guess half a loaf is better than no loaf.
“Responding to a question about CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson’s outing, Rove, seemingly joking, added:
I haven’t been indicted yet, but I fully expect to be by the end of the year.”
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/10/rove-iowa/
Holy wee wee!!!
NY Governor Elliott Spitzer involved in prostitution ring? Front-paged at NYT.
On a separate issue I’ve been mulling about…Question for the legal beagles hereabouts. Is there any way for the Congress to take over the reins of DOJ from a corrupt or noncompliant AC or administration? Not just investigate, but actually have control over?
Spitzer story:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03.....er.html?hp
my sentiments exactly
NYT time stamped 3 min ago, same as CNBC announcement.
That’s all they know how to do, along with waving the fear flag. Sadly, it’s become apparent that’s all the Clintons know as well. It’s amazing to me to watch these entrenched people not be able to adjust to the changing times we’re obviously in. They just keep doing the same shit.
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com.....47377.aspx
Finally, an honest answer out of Team Clinton. I suppose since they’ve had so much success in their lives to this point, they think they should just keep doing the things that got them here. Unfortunately for them, it doesn’t work that way. Sometimes time simply passes you by, and you either adjust to it, or you fall by the wayside.
How is one involved in a prostitution ring…arranging prostitutes for politicians or friends or what? Is he a pimp?
hyprocrisy is a problem no matter the political party
We’ll find out momentarily.
john the way it sounds at first read.
Just what we don’t need…fodder for Republicans to use in a general election…a bimbo eruption story.
he didn’t sell his soul, he sold the soul of the future.
How many hookers does he own?
CNBC reminds that Spitzer “is a first term D who promised to bring ethics back to Albany.” Goes on the speculate that it’s involved in the Empire Club, according to NYSun. Will look for link.
Who is the original source breaking this story?
Here’s the NYSun link to the prostitution story. No mention in it of Spitzer in it, but CNBC (gloating cause Wall St. HATES Spitzer) connected the two because apparently Spitzer is a member.
http://www.nysun.com/article/72574
“Senior Spitzer Administration officials.”
I’m with LS, is he a pimp?
Spitzer’s a Clinton backer. If this is true, wonder if it could hurt her campaign?
This from the NYSun article linked at 55
Geez, wadaya gotta do for $5500 per hour? My imagination is not wild enough.
OT, but when Tucker Carlson is canceled life is good, even if it is Monday.
No.
They can impeach folks at the DOJ who are not doing their jobs, but they can’t take it over, appoint people they want, and run it themselves.
I’m guessing he “partook” (is that a word?) of the ring’s “wares” (a nice old-fashioned word!).
This is a great opening for Republics to make the campaign about prostitution and pornography.
John McCain was a POW from 1967-1973. Think about the major events that occurred during those years that he was either not aware of and certainly not experiencing the way we were. The assassination of MLK and Bobby Kennedy just for starters.
For that very reason, I think that his perspective on the American culture since then is extremely skewed, and that is one huge reason he is out of touch with America and unqualified to be president. He has a pre-1967 mindset and a misinterpretation of America from 1973 forward. Just my two cents.
No, sorry. Impeachment is off the table. Nancy and the Democrats are too busy doing….well, I suppose they are doing something.
But WH hack David Gregory is replacing him…:(
Actually, those are the reasons that he is a Republic.
I just hope that Democrats avoid their usual snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in November. They are very adept at this.
So I guess this might hamper Spitzer’s chances for an AG role…
T-
With Harry and Nancy as leaders, the adeptness will continue.
I was simply saying that the only permissible way for Congress to deal with the DOJ was via the impeachment route.
I was not saying it was going to happen — not by any stretch of the imagination.
Someone said in an earlier thread that tucker was being replaced by scar and unfortunately, I passed it along in a subsequent thread. There could be a number of better possibilities than gregory but personally would prefer him over scar; at least he isn’t so blatantly reich wing. Iirc, the article at Josh’s place also said Keith would be rerun at 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. which should give him a larger audience. :-)
Yup.
The analogy works for me.
Was Hastert ever anything but a lump of iron?
a bright spot on the landscape - hastert’s seat has been wwon by a dem….. but the dem nominees for pres are doing a job on each other…. leaving mccant unscathed…..
I love McCain’s reminder. He’s right, all he has to do is remind people Hillary and Obama are Democrats and the outcome will change - not quite the way BigMc expects. Bet shrub told him to ignore the people and Mackie does what he is told.
In the mean time, Bill Foster and Donna Edwards are raking in the votes and replacing the House’s demographics.
Have you noticed BigMc, the handwriting on the wall doesn’t erase?
Jabba da Hut loses his seat!
It doesn’t have to be a big to-do. All we have to do is replace one of them and I prefer it be Harry Reid. I think we have several good senate replacements. On the House side, I think we have some scary replacements. Nancy keeping her speakership could be strengthened with a strong senate leader.
So true LS. I was living out of the country in a small village in Asia for quite some time. We had no electricity, running water, transportation. It was pretty simple. One day one of my villagers came to me and said I had a new president. My response was, “Oh, did Nixon die?”
I had to find out all the details when I returned to the states but I never really experienced what the country felt when Nixon left the White House. It must have been breathtaking. My experience is selective based on what I read and movies.
Well, if worse comes to worse and the Dems blow the Prez election due to fratricide or whatever, that a Prez McCrazy will have to contend with an even BIGGER (compliant and fawning) Democratic Congress than even Bush has had to
totally controldeal with.Who am I kiddin’ but myself. McCrazy would p0wn the Dems, no matter how many seats they gained, every bit as much as Bush/Cheney have.
So we go with Pat Fitzgerald.
