I grew up in the Shuttle’s heyday of the 80s. So sadly i can’t imagine what it was like for those infancy space programs. But wow, it’s still something to think about. I just wish NASA’d had the chance to develop a newer and more efficient vehicle before they retire the shuttles! This 2 year business is probably one of the worst ideas i’ve ever heard, especially without that alternative on the backburner.

Watching AppleSeed Ex Machina on the heels of the launch makes me wonder where we’re headed though. ^^ Shirow-san’s stuff always does. Whether it’s space travel or the concept of robotics/cyborgs/androids. But that’s why i’m as much of a SciFi nut as a Fantasy fangirl. ^^ Anime is the one genre that slakes my thirst in both and the whole idea of wonder. This sequel though? Kicks TOTAL Ass. Plot, action, a great mix of drama to top it off. The plot was rather pedestrian by my tastes, but it far exceeds a lot of stuff i’ve seen stateside.

Back in the days of the Iridium communications satellite effort, there were a lot of interesting proposals for low-cost launch vehicles. One local outfit was proposing a light-weight craft made out of aircraft aluminum, which would be coated with a ablative coating of carbon foam. It would be towed aloft like a glider by a 747, and would rocket up to suborbital altitude on a liquid fuel rocket motor, where it would launch its rocket propelled payload. It would then skip off the atmosphere like a stone on a pond to complete a single orbit and land where it took off. At least that was the theory. When Iridium went out of business so did this project.
