Though we should do it as loudly and as often, and it’s factually true, it’s almost not even necessary to link John McCain with George W. Bush. All we have to do is say, "Republican."
"Please tell me if you think the REPUBLICAN Party or the DEMOCRATIC Party could do a better job in each of the following areas. Which party could do a better job of [see below]?"
Foreign policy: Democrats +5
Immigration: Demorats + 5
Iraq: Democrats +10
Taxes: Democrats +12
Morality: Democrats +10
Economy: Democrats +19
Education: Democrats + 29
Health care: Democrats +30
Reforming government: Democrats +25
Energy: Democrats +34
Environment: Democrats +44
You know when the GOP is losing by 10 to the Democrats on "morality" and by 12 on taxes, they’re in big trouble. But look at those numbers on the big issues of the day — especially health care and energy: they’re just fucked.
Here’s the funny part: St. McCain has no choice but to keep singing "lower taxes" and "no surrender in Iraq," over and over, because that’s the only song the GOP knows, and it’s the only one his wingnut base wants to hear.
And Americans, finally, are sick of it.

About Firedoglake
Hi, Blue Texan!
Yeehaw!!
but to keep singning “lower taxes”
Kind of amazing when you think of that wall of support they used to have. What happened to all those assholes who thought we were unpatriotic for thinking that Iraq was a bad idea? I know there’s still a few of them out there, but most of them seemed to have moved on to immigration. The rest just disappeared.
Outstanding, Blue Texan! A great dose of perspective!
damn librul polsters!
I think that the “base” finally realized that you have to make some money before you have to pay taxes.
Almost!
How about this for bad timing? Letters To Congress NOT Tied to Times Square Bombing
The man who sent the letters showing him standing in front of an Army Recruiting Office sent them to celebrate Democratic electoral victories…NOT to claim credit for the bombing of the Office, investigators have said.
There was no apparent comment on their “painting” of his accompanying letter as a “radical manifesto”.
Yet if you only watched cable news, you’d think the GOP and Democrats were on fairly equal footing going into November.
YET- watch them vote GOP in November! Just you watch.
General question, and kinda sorta OT, but kinda sorta not:
Will Bush back channel critical information to McCain? IE, starting a third war with Iran?
Bush needs McCain in a really big way, in order to keep the lid on all kinds of crimes. Why wouldn’t he supply McCain with insider information?
If I were Bush that’s what I’d do.
Grazie.
Yeah, today they are touting that the RNC has $25 million on hand and the the Dems only have $4 million….the implication is that the Pukes have the money to win, and that they will win. BS.
There’s something about collapsing bridges and and bursting dams that gets people’s attention. Unsafe toys, tainted food, & bad medicine, people wan to have some assurance of quality-there are things that you have to pay for if you would like to have them. A wake up all has been heard!
I just waiting for the onslaugt of orange alerts this summer
Oh, the humanity!
Oh that is so 2004! :-)
When I saw that yesterday I wondered if it sent a message to the Dems that we were sending our money to candidates and that the resounding NO that we wrote on their begging letters really meant what it said. Hope so.
LOL wellthey are known for living in a bubble
Oh, the Huge Manatee
The Bush brand is not only in ruins they got a stop trading notice!
Carlyle Capital shares were this morning suspended in trading by the Dutch stock markets watchdog AFM after it said it has received substantial additional margin calls and additional default notices from its lenders.
An AFM spokesman said Carlyle Capital shares will remain suspended until the company issues a new statement. The spokesman did not comment on when a statement is expected.
Carlyle Capital said there has been a rapid and severe deterioration in the market for US government agency AAA-rated RMBS in the past several days.
It added that, although it believed last week it had sufficient liquidity, it was informed by lenders this week additional margin calls and increased collateral requirements would be significant and well in excess of the margin calls it received Wednesday.
‘The company believes these additional margin calls and increased collateral requirements could quickly deplete its liquidity and impair its capital,’ Carlyle Capital said in a statement.
I wonder how Bush will get taxpayers to bailout his dad especially if the problem is nobody wants our governments RMBS

I just hope they continue the death spiral. We’re seeing it here with Virginia GOP. As they lose moderates, their base of support shrinks, it’s increasingly dominated by absolutists who brook no departure from the party line. Heretics are primaried or cast out. Those who remain are certain their policies are right (principally “cut taxes no matter what,” with a bit of hate for immigrants/gays/libruls) and that the people really support them, no matter how often they lose running on that. If they just stick to their guns and do more of that, voters will see how great it is and the glorious revolution will come.
I used to wish for sane people to retake control of the GOP. Now I think they really have to hit bottom and possibly become a marginal regionally-based party before the noxious elements can be purged, for the good of the country.
My question to you all here is, do you think that will all hold if Hillary continues her scorched earth policy of the politics of personal destruction? Do you think it will hold if she keeps declaring John McCain more qualified than Obama? Do you think she’ll go back to being Mrs. Nice Girl against McCain if she wins the nomination? Do you think she’ll declare how honored she is to be on the stage with him, only to turn around and knife him in the back, like she’s done with Obama?
Who do you think you are? Punaise?
I think what you saw in Virginia is happening nation wide with the exact same results.
You think they’ve finally been done in by the southern strategy?
I can’t take credit for that image. I also can’t take credit for: “Oh, the Hume Hannity”
lol!
Also couldn’t believe that morality figure; is Pew supposed to do good polling? Looks like the only thing they beat us on is terrorism threat at home…….and ya gotta be freakin’ insane to buy that!
Wrt to the orange alerts….wouldn’t surprise me if that’s what the recruiting station bombing in Times Square was. Thought it a wee tad odd that the area was only closed down for a few hours; how can you collect sufficient evidence in that amount of time?
Unfortunately, I don’t think they’ve disappeared. I think now they’re saying stupid things like, “If they haven’t done anything wrong, there’s no reason that they should object to the telecoms’ warrantless wiretapping. Only the guilty would be concerned!”
My fervent wish for the GOP is that this is the year they go the way of the Whig Party in 1856.
BC
Now that’s a foxy comment!
Pipe dream: Wouldn’t it be hilarious if McCain was actually getting his revenge on Bush for the 2000 dirty tricks by posing as a Neocon, getting their votes, and then handing the election to the Dems. Now, that would be some serious revenge stratergy….
The McCain nomination makes no sense.
It will hold because Hilary is not quite the danger Bush is. On the other hand it might inspire the Left wing of the Democratic party to push its candidates more. After all the DLC assumes that we will do all the work getting out the vote anyway while they charge high fees for Mark Penn, Rahm Emanuel type campaign advice.
That advice can be summed up by saying be a Republican but run as a Democrat.
Wake me when the Dems actually do something about this.
Er, no. The DCCC and DSCC, the ones we tend to write “NO!” on, are doing well financially, especially compared to their GOP counterparts. The DNC is party-building, 50-state strategy, and all that good infrastructure that’s helped increase our chances of success when there’s not an active campaign collecting donations.
This is an important distinction — I stopped giving to the DCCC and DSCC back in ‘04 and giving to candidates instead, because I, like many of us, thought I could pick better than the sucky candidates they were often pushing. But campaign contributions are no substitute for party-building. I know from direct experience that everything a campaign builds with your contributions evaporates as soon as the campaign is over. So please put either the DNC or your local party (or both) on your “yes!” list.
thank you Blue Texan -
not so fast waccamaw *g*
clicked on the link as I was concerned as to anyone polling terra, terra, terra – and the page contains plenty
anecdotally (IANAWonk), folks are saying (30 – 40%) terrorism is very important, but when asked to prioritize, only 10% would put it up top,
so that’s only half of the mouthbreathers
good luck reanimating that corpse, especially in light of projected economic conditions by November
What I really want to know is, what does Hill do when she discovers all those people that were turning out in droves because they were inspired and excited about Obama, who gave them hope, have turned on her in disgust and won’t be a part of her constituency? Those are the ones I think will literally disappear again.
Oil at $106 today DOW drops below 12,000 mark I wonder when the computerized sell orders kick in?
As compared to the other candidates they had? LOL
The country is in ruins. Chimpy talking about the economy right now so look out for a stock market crash
Sad but true. In fact, with few exceptions, Big Media just loves them a big hunka hot BBQ McVain. Low information voters still spend their 15 minutes of newsgathering from Fox, CNN, Major Network Newsies etc. The Pro-GOP spin is all they are gonna see from those shlubs. I’m stating the obvious in this post but it really can’t be said enough. November is a long way and a lot of dirty tricks down the road. A Dem win is not a done deal. The work done here on FDL (by gifted and dedicated people I might add)and other blogs like it is probably the most important media jobs in place today. The trick is to get this info in front of John Q et al on a daily basis.
John McCain – More of the Same!
Well she has no choice if she wins Obama has to be her Vice President or the African Americans and many Lefties will stay home. I will still support the Democratic Nominee but I’m only one person.
Whoops! Wrong thread! Sorry. :)
bushco will give McBus a recess appointment during summer recess to the position of president.
(Hmmmm. Are they going to recess or keep the place open with the one senator system?)
Yes…in comparison to the others…
They hate McCain the most.
But this is good for republicans and especially good for a maverick such as mccain.
look at his life story.
(but dont look at how he left his first wife after she got sick, put on weight and there was a rich hotty after his ass.)
Gooper family values. your family not mine.
“The McCain nomination makes no sense.“
Unless you look at it through the prism of him being offered up as a sacrificial lamb by a party that really doesn’t like him anyway.
We’re not the only ones looking at the above numbers.
He gets his turn, he gets crushed, and they don’t have to bother with him anymore.
Then in 2012, some “good hair” nutbag like Romney (who “has shoulders you could land a 747 on” via Tweety) gets to come along as the savior.
Unfortunately, too many Democratic politicians either will not hear of these numbers or will it take it as a sign that they need to move closer to Republican positions if they want to keep their edge.
Nooooo! the market was already down! Almost everytime Bush gives a talk during the day the market goes down. The Bush effect is Real. You know how superstitious the markets are!
The Maverick Branded!
The Clintons are so myopic and one dimensional that it’s all about first things first and do what you gotta do. All the Clintons think about is doing what you gotta do to get the nomination, then try to do what you can to mend fences saying what you gotta say. If the Clintons get the nomination, they will run a Republican style campaign anyway and try to attract disaffected Obama voters only through their surrogates with promises about judicial nominees etc, lowering the bar to that level. We are dealing with grifters here and sleight of hand. What amazes me about the Clintons is how transparently vapid they are and yet they are players.
I’ve stopped having any faith in the MSM letting that happening. The only good news is the increase in number of people who are getting their news on-line but, like I never go to reich wing sites, many of them probably don’t come to progressive sites.
And he’s so devastating on a horsie.
Without Obama on the Dem ticket in the national…McCain will win. JMHO
How bad does the economy have to be for the White House to tell the truth?
WASHINGTON – President Bush’s top economic adviser said Friday the nation’s economic growth could dip into negative territory for the current quarter, an assessment that tracks with many outside experts but is the most pessimistic to come so far from the White House.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..sh_economy
Nah it is based on rumoured facts and forecast numbers… very secure please invest your soc. sec.
The Prez just strolled out and mumbled something about the economy.
The guy is a complete and utterly clueless fucker…
He looked bedazzled…
Great post up on C&L on this subject. With funny Daily Show clip:
The Daily Show: The Price of Oil
Question in regard to C&L -
Has anyone else been having problems recently with your computer locking up when on their site?
Actually, here they seem to have been done in by having the “tax cuts always increase revenue” line go from being a lie they tell the rubes to get elected to being something they actually believe. There’s some theocratic stuff and some anti-immigrant stuff, but “no taxes ever for any reason” seems to be by far the strongest orthodoxy in the rising generation of Republican officials.
They seem ideologically incapable of accepting that most people don’t see taxes as the only part of government they care about, and that sitting in traffic or having underfunded schools costs them, too. This makes them prone to statements like “there are better ways to do it, and we will find the better ways,” when opposing a tax to pay for transportation improvements. (This after the state supreme court struck down last year’s cockamamie scheme to establish a regional board that could levy taxes and fees so that transportation could be paid for while their hands were “clean.”)
My opinion too.
He could care less…because the bad economy doesn’t affect him. But, now it might with the Carlyle problems that have just popped into the public awareness….
He is an oil man…the economy is great for him with oil at $105.
You forgot one,
Dealing with terrorist threat at home: Dems 38/Rethugs 45
This is their hole card and in some voter’s minds out weighs all else.
Just sayin’
OT-Anyone watching he CEO of Home Mortgage Lending Companies compensation hearings on C-span? Angie Mozilo, CEO Countrywide Mortgage, getting the crap kicked outta him right now. Quite entertaining! Republiclowns attempting to provide cover, pretty ineffectual…
I think the 2012 GOP nominee will be someone who wasn’t running this year. I’ve long thought that the smart Republicans could see the GOP didn’t have a chance this year, which is why their choices were so unpalatable even to Republicans. McCain either wasn’t that smart or knew it was his last chance.
And that is the one that has to be refuted endlessly…
We were attacked on 9/11 under their watch…not the Dem watch.
They were repeatedly warned and did absolutely nothing.
But that’s negated by Iraq, because the GOP conflates them. And even that’s, what, a 7 point advantage? And with everything else?
I’ll take them going 1-for-30 on the issues (and a close 1) any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Rut roh…John mcCain gets testy when asked about John Kerry as a running mate. It’s on MSNBC, which means they will run it all day *g* Now all can see his sunny personality
Just don’t let news like this keep you away from the polls in November. I don’t just want to kick their asses, I want to kick their asses to the moon.
He’s getting a little over confident now that he’s the “nominee”…popcorn for months to come.
Classic! If anything the news is worse today. Bush complaining about Clinton years high oil prices because Bill had no plan is ironic both funny and SAD REALLY, REALLY SAD!
Um, and if they had a viable 2012 candidate, why wouldn’t they have run him this year? You can’t really believe they would give up the prez for 4 years jest cause it it looks like the Ds are on a roll? Rs don’t have a viable 12 candidate any more than they have one for 08. Maybe circumstances will produce one by 12, but there’s none in the pipeline now.
Ohhhh, goody! My sat TV is out….please describe “testy” in detail.
I can’t wait until McCain has a huge hissy fit down the road and his botox eyebrows won’t work. The expression will be priceless.
absolutely. I can see the jokes will write themselves *g*
Had to go do some weeding today as I have just been pissed off for a few days and needed to unload all this negative energy
The Shrub is a past master at projection.
Isn’t that some form of chronic pathological lying…
Probably coming down from that coke binge that lead him to tap dance the other day…
I think “chronic pathological lying” is a bit redundant, but I take your point.
McCain is going to tackle someone and try biting their face before this eledtion is over.
He’s ready to blooooooooooow.
-G
And speaking of the sat TV, need to get off the line in case the techie who’s supposed to be here between 12-5 is trying to get thru…..catch up with you guys and the news later.
The Clintons talk about being on the ticket with Obama is just a squeeze play. The Clintons may fairly assume that Obama does not want them anywhere near him in the ge because Bill Clinton is a wildcard and backseat driver. Can you imagine being President with an ex-president married to your vp, knowing all they want is your job asap? On top of that Obama is immensely more talented than the Clintons and the Clintons are soooooooooooo boring and Obama has plans. So the Clintons are trying to jam Obama to take them on the ticket.
He was on a plane to heaven knows where and the question was posed to him by a reporter about how John Kerry had asked him about running with him in 2004. He just got a little defensive about the question and started going off on the reporter about it. She stated she had read about it and wanted to know if it was true and he says that everyone knew about it so why was she bringing it up and wouldn’t answer any more questions about it. Shorter version, he was being a dick
Then the reporter asked, “Why are you so angry?”
OT: tony Blair to teach at Yale.
Where are my picket signs?
Never can tell, though. I’ve been waiting seven years for Der Shrubbenfuhrer to do a public meltdown, and it just never happens.
“The Prez just strolled out and mumbled something about the economy.
The guy is a complete and utterly clueless fucker…
He looked bedazzled…”
Bedazzled? Wait until he finds out gas is expected to go to $4/gal. this year!
You do that also–and I thought I was so original several years ago when I started that! Told them the same on the phone so much they finally stopped calling. Any little sum I might have to contribute will go directly to a deserving candidate–they will use no centavo of mine to undermine a good Democrat.
Boy, Obama buckled on his adviser in short order. Kinda reminds me of Bill Clinton dumping Zoe Baird and Kimba Woods.
-G
LMAO
You go! *G*
I would LOVE it if WE started saying we were going to lower taxes!
the differance is, we WILL
we will reclaim the assets that were STOLEN from our infrastructure and from the middle class, those people WILL be paying less taxes
this will be driven by getting those assets from whence they went
simple strategy here and it will work
actually saw some bit online 2 days ago with ‘Joyride’ Issa stomping his feet, threatening to hold his breath bec mean old Henry Waxman was gonna the horror! conflate their greed with the sub prime mess
and I see from this link, I missed Waxman going after Mozilo (Countrywide)
did anyone catch that segment ?
link
I didn’t know Yale had classes in poodlery.
Blair is all over the place. he lose a country or something?
I agree, my point was that for the steadfast 19 percenters this will be the issue and what we will get to listen to in various forms for the next 6 months. It won’t matter unless something happens to frighten another 30% of the sheep into stampeding stage right.
The only way Obama can lose the general election is to have Clinton as VP.
The only way Clinton can win the general election is to have Obama as VP.
I know! Me too. Every time I see him on TV, I expect him to freak out.
We aren’t dead yet…*g*
Not to worry.
McBush has a waaaay shorter fuse.
We need a FDL pool on when it’s gonna happen.
So the Clintons are trying to jam Obama to take them on the ticket.
Obama needs a Person as VP who is further to the Left than he is as insurance .
Had no choice, she was wrong to personally attack Clinton and his campaign isn’t about doing stuff like that. Will we see Wolfson apologize or step down for comparing Obama to Ken Star, doubt it. I just want this to be over, I feel like we’re turning on each other
Those courses are part of the Department of Sycophantology.
W replay on C-span now
Speaking of dirigibles…
Looks like Ron Paul’s gonna back it in. Maybe Hillary could lease his blimp now: The Hot Air High Flyer.
http://blog.wired.com/27bstrok…..lim-1.html
i simply think the 19%ers are fodder for ridicule.
It is supposed to be connected to his organization (faith organization) but what’s a univeristy campus without some picket signs and demonstrators. I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one there
Shorter version of Bush, “Let them eat
cockcake.Aint that the truth, but the Clintons do not care. Bet on this, if the Clintons get on the ticket, she will not resign her senate seat. But hey, what better way to run for President the next time around. The Clintons are endless.
True but they’ve been in charge of the bullhorn for 7 years and won’t go away quietly. In case you haven’t noticed ridicule doesn’t phase them.
Yes, IIRC Dr. Kissup is the chair and the faculty includes the noted scholars Schiller, Fellachio, Bendover, and Hacking.
Gasp…Obama advisor wants telco immunity:
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/07/obama-brennan/
No doubt someone will find a way to argue that this proves that Obama is for telco immunity.
Damn November hurry up
The “adviser” stuff really gets blown out of proportion IMO. Obama has clearly spoke against it since the beginning. Obama has specifically said he wants advisors that’ll offer different viewpoints from his own. Who knows how much sway this unpaid advisor has with Obama, if any?
I think the bestest, most pertinent question is this: Eight years ago, the Republican party determined that John McCain was an also ran, a second place finisher to George W. Bush. If you are satisfied with the performance of George G. Bush over the last eight years, then it is possible that you might be satisfied with a candidate determined, BY HIS OWN PARTY, to be not even as good. If, on the other hand, you don’t think George W. Bush has performed well, than why the hell would you want to vote for a candidate who has finished behind him in a head to head matchup? Are you NUTS!
(I guess that was at least two questions)
The poll is a snapshot in time. A lot can change from now until November. The Republicans still have a corrupted and complicit MSM in their corner and between the two they will pull out all the stops to demonize any Democrat to insure the staus quo. Although the poll looks good we shouldn’t celebrate too much until the last shovel of dirt is thrown on the grave of the Republican Party.
The brand is definitely dying, but like a dying whale, you worry about what it will do in its death throes. Are they preparing one more surprise for us? I dreamed they were: What George Bush and John McCain said on their way down to the bunker to meet with Dick Cheney.
