Okay folks, Christy’s laptop has given its all for the causes of democracy, free speech, habeas corpus and the Right to Snark. She needs a new computer because her old laptop just shocked the daylights out of her and we can’t have that.
So if you would like to contribute to the Christy Needs A New Computer fund, please hit the PayPal button below. And if you’d like to designate your donation for that purpose, add 11 cents to the end, because on the scale of 1-10, she’s a…well, you know.

Mr. LS says…get a Mac…
Redd!
Shocked as in electrocuted?
I’m in with a piddling $25.11 and more to come on payday.
Sent $s but only for a Mac :) :)
I swear it wasn’t the CIA.
you sure about that?
I won’t donate if it isn’t a mac.
Seriously!
Never, ever use a laptop with water around…
Get the 24″ model iMac, absolutely. No skimping!
Well, that leaves DIA, NSA, AFISA, NRO, etc etc etc
Maybe it was my FB friend request to Redd that did it…! ;-)
Check ur He4d!
Heh, there’s 16 known Alphabet Agencies, and numerous unknowns…! ;-)
OK I’m in. I agree about the Mac part but I also know that Christy is used to PC’s. With the new macs, however if she absolutely positively must use microsquish stuff on it she can.
They just came out last week with mac laptops with souped up memory, speed and larger HD’s. Go for it.
Not electrocuted to death or anything…but yes, an electric shock. Mercifully, Mr. ReddHedd is graciously allowing me to use his at the moment.
I hope you’re OK. Even little shocks can be, well, shocking.
Definately time for new keys to tap.
All right, but I want you to go play outside for an hour first.
Three cheers for Mr. Reddhedd and sharing!!
You sound just like mrbrat! ;~) Being somewhat tech-phobic I was awfully anxious when he surprised me with a new mini-mac at xmas but quickly became a happy convert. IMHO Redd deserves whatever she wishes and either/or is just plain silly fellows.
Jane – when we do these fundraisers – is there anyway to put something on the site that we can see so that we know how much is needed and how much is accumulating?
of course, but it’s fun to tease her.
That…is really scary, I did’t know a computer could do that…yikes! Glad you’re okay…
LOL! Men will be boys. (g..)
Well, a gazillion inches monitor sure will come in handy for the great work you do. Our thanks to the static fingers mate.
Set in their ways, Ma Cheri…! 8-P
Donated something to the cause — I always buy behind the curve because that way I can buy a new one every 2-3 years for the price of the latest and greatest (which can only be replaced every 4-5 years). Get the rugged model :-)
That would be “Ma Chérie”, Charles. I can understand the lack of “accent aigu”. :)
Yes’m, I haven’t enabled the French type… My humble apologies from this former anglo-saxon canuck…! *g*
You couldn’t give me a Mac unless you also paid me to use it… It is stolen GUI that they use… think Xerox… I know I was seeing the Lisa before Mac was born in the earlie eighties. I also know the whole story behind Jobs getting the technology for the Mac… He is a thief….
And Bill Gates is an ethical saint?
Puhleeze!
Geez – where did that blast come from? People this week are getting p*ssed off about the most amazing things.
So, did you ever hear the story about how MS came into being by ripping off the guys who first developed DOS? I believe it was called Q-DOS originally.
And didn’t Apple actually purchase the information from Xerox?
Heh, Ain’t that the truth, however, I’m a long-suffering MS addict…! And agree with nahant…! ;-)
Xerox didn’t want it. Didn’t know what it was good for. Imagine if GUI had stayed in the trash.
And how’s VISTA working for you?
Rachel, my sweetie, is talking about KBR’s shenanigans, on AA…!
No way he also stole the GUi along with HP. When The law suite was filed the judge didn’t understand intellectual rights that Xerox had already patented in late 70’s. So the only company that really invented the interface we all use now…
Mac’s hardware is no better than any one of the major manufacture. Personally I prefer Dell, they have performed very well for me over the years.
I think Mac should do the right thing and drop out now. Most important is that we have a new laptop, and the controversy caused by the Mac campaign is only hurting that goal.
Forget the iMac, get a Cube!
DONE!
Get a good one, Christy. Top of the line, if you can.
Look at NewEgg.com and TigerDirect.com. BF gets our stuff from these sites at substantially less cost and we’ve never had any problems with anything.
:)
tuché.
Gotta go. Hubby and dinner calls.
I am having no problems with Vista on my laptop, I did have some issues in the beginning but they were all driver related which have been resolved. I have also installed SP1 with no problems and so far things are just sailing along with Vista!
Well, I tried to donate, but PayPal (I hate Paypal) won’t accept the information that I have provided. Why can’t I just donate through my Visa card?
And, Christy, thanks so much for your work. And, Get a Mac.
Barbara
Puh-leese! Aloha, Balrog, how’s wee Balrog doing? ;-)
you can go to paypal and not sign in. they will take your credit card.
Weerog is now almost 10 months old. Strapping lad with a wicked sense of the absurd. He’s a joy.
The reason Xerox screwed the pooch was that Xerox was and is run by a bunch of toner heads. They wanted way too much $$$$ for the software and had no idea about computers and networks.
The Xerox Star (first commercial release of the software) worked great and took up less than 3mb of disk space. The networking was seamless and getting to anywhere on the network was really just a few clicks away.
A chip of the ole block! Enjoy it while you can…! *g*
IIRC, she has a “loaded” I-Mac on the way.
Had a KAYPRO with pre Msoft DOS. Seem to remember a company called Digital. Synapses are too dusty to confirm…Everyone knows DOS was not created by Bill Gates…
It is even a better story than that! There was a system by Digital Research, DR DOS which was better yet that lost out due to some reason (depending on what you choose to believe. I have heard they wanted too much and Gates knew he could get entry to the market and was willing to take the pittance IBM offered. Some say the inventor of DR DOS had an dalliance with a senior exec at IBMs wife. Whatever the reason, you know the result! Here is a good write up on the story.
Heh, Traitor…! *g*
Mac fans are very annoying.
Rather…! ;-)
Or coffee..it took six months for my laptop to rot its mother board after a small coffee spill.
I love it. Christy’s computer electrocutes her, so now she needs a new computer…and everyone is arguing if a Mac or a PC is better! Bah hahahahahaha! Freedom rings. ;-)
Christy, I don’t have money to spare this week. It’s been a tough winter. Sorry. :-(
but we are the faithful :)
Indubitably! 8-P
I’ll have a drink to that!;-)
((((((Christy)))))))
Does Cray make a laptop?
If they do, get one of those, you deserve it.
I’m in.
Don’t know if they do but a few years ago Macs were put on the blocked technology list because of the power and speed. They were considered “super computers” so DoD blocked them from overseas IIRC.
I’m gettin a 404 on the new post.
Stupid Macs. ;)
Fixed.
Its all in the processor and memory. The quad processors are already out and if you are willing to pay the price you can get them. They will run the different Os’s quite well and make for a great workstation… Used to be that mainly servers could use the multiple processors because the server software would support them.
Two quads is now “standard” with the Mac Pro.
Moore’s Law at work… I just love it…gives me an excuse every two or so years to get a new PC and turn the old one into a server :>) >:)
Yeah, and the Mac Pro is a big disappointment to some professionals in the publishing business.
I can’t believe that such pettiness is showing up here. If I had the money, I would ship her a new PC.
Folks, if it wasn’t for PC, even Mac would not be as advance as it is. Guess where all the high end electronics is done.
With the Intel chip set, Mac is now PC.
Accept in the world of OS where Vista = Mac of 2001.
typing away on my new little hp/vista tablet
love it
and @ $822 you couldn’t touch a mac
Accept should be Except
Yep it is all in the OS now and windows is supported by way more third party applications than a Mac. Mac’s have their die-hards but only have about 6 to 7% of the market thus windows has more engineers working on the applications for the windows environment! For me that means more customers!!! :>))
Not really!
The Peanut didn’t try to serve tea on the laptop, did she, LOL!!! I agree with checking out NewEgg! Great prices etc. Just made a donation to the convention fund. Will make one to help w/the laptop in a couple of days.
Gotcha with $50.11. Wish it could be more.
I’ll ask here because it’s germane, even if I may be EPU. If I click the “support this site” button to the right and get the PayPal button, is there a way within PayPal to send a repeating, monthly sum? I can’t do big stuff often, but $5 or $10 a month I can handle. I’m a moron when it comes to PayPal and would appreciate any instructions any of y’all can give. I’d love to set up something where a bit goes to FDL every month…
epu’d but Im in. Wish it were more, your priceless Christy.
Thanks again for all that you do.
If Jobs would offer an OS to run on the PC (whuts he waiting for, it’s now a piece of cake) I would give it a shot.
FAPP, a stable OS is a stable OS, whoever writes it. I just don’t want the crap loading down Vista.
Do not get a mac, The os for it might look all nice and pretty but that’s about it. There over priced. Mac book air any one? Yes its small. but that about it. No DVD drive and 1 USB port. I’m just as happy on my HP Pavilion that you can get for about $500 on up. I was an avid PC gamer but since I’m leaving for the air force soon I got ride of my desktop and got this. I like macs but they selling point mainly is when there products break. They know that people will pay out the #$% for repair.
Also enjoy this lovely mac virus.
http://gizmodo.com/363490/plug…..-to-pieces
Leopard will work on a pc. There is an x86 version out there.
Jane, tell Christy if she really likes viruses and all the problems they bring, then anything other than an Apple will work. But for simplicity and reliability , an Apple a day………well, you know.
If you have a good anti virus then you are fine. I rarely get viruses on my pc.
Well, I’ve been shocked by Christy’s keyboard more than once…
And oh, this Steve Jobs impersonation is still relevant.
yay. me, too. Macs are the only way to go, we switched years ago.
Sorry I didn’t post sooner, I hit the PayPal button the minute it went up but forgot to add, Best Wishes to Christy! (I was assuming I could leave a note on my PayPal contribution page.)
Christy, it wasn’t a lot, but I hope you’ll enjoy your new laptop, and give The Peanut a hug from me!
-S
Member in good standing of The Peanut’s fan club since, well, it started
How about receiving a donation of a computer, rather than cash to purchase one. I’ve got a possible.
Nobody out there works at a place that could just GIVE Christy a computer? Really?
Dang, I missed this! I am falling so far behind at FDL, with all the time I spend over at the [not to be mentioned] other blog.
Where/when was the “convention fund” announced, and can somebody please repost the thread so we can all give?
yea, and Mercedes is just another Volkswagon….
Mercedes is just another CAR.
There are service bays for Mercedes, and Mac, and PC.
So what?
Stupid platform fights.
Get a life!
Another $25.11 for the Christy anti-fascist computer!
And another thing, although this will probably not be read so late in the thread, but what’s the difference between lobbying with money for your thing in D.C, and doing it here?
Makes complaining about money power in D.C. phony in my book.
Thanks, Twain,
I will try that.
Marion, probably better to log in at PayPal and drill around on that site for info on how to set up recurring payments. IIRC, you would only need Fire Dog Lake’s PayPal name and PayPal email address, which are:
The Fire Dog Lake Company
firedoglake@gmail.com
310-467-6220
according to my PayPal receipts. FDL may have a PayPal account number but I doubt you need anything more than their email address.
PayPal has a service specifically designed to allow FDL to accept recurring payments for “content site membership” subscription payments. Check it out:
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/xcl/rec/subscription-outside
hey Starbuck, just having fun, don’t let that PC make you mean, chill out. What ever Christy ends up with won’t matter. And by the way, it doesn’t matter how many bays the garage has, it’s how often the cars in them need servicing, that pays the bills.
Get whatever kind of laptop suits you!
(I have friends with PC desktops and Mac laptops, but they build websites and need both kinds of machines and as many browsers as they can get – not everyone uses Internet Exploder!)
Aw C’mon! I get a shock from petting my dog!
Does the computer still work?
Christy, I just donated toward your computer. I never do things like that, so maybe there’s still hope for me, and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for yourself, for me, for baby Jesus and all the little angels in heaven, be sure you buy a Mac.
Can’t remember my damned password, but it is in my keys file at work.
Hope you enjoy your new box, Christy. Glad to contribute.
What a guy. (Oh yea Starbuck,, welcome to my “got a life”, here at FDL)
PC’s don’t make me mean, platform wars do, especially when started by insecure Mac people.
You may have been kidding, but others stated emphatically they would not donate unless she buys a Mac. (Post 8)
Which is exactly equivalent to “I will not donate to your election fund unless you give me an inside track to your office.”
So damn hypocritical.
Horseshit. You’re the one that started lambasting Macs with phony phacts. Those folks were trying to encourage her to junk the virus-infected DOS with a GUI layer world of Micro$loth.
Here’s the system you REALLY need, Christy:
A customized Mac-Air
lol
btw, the DR-DOS story from a few years after was that they were on a mandatory week’s vacation at the time IBM called them in Santa Cruz, which was verified, they did it every year. And yes, the young and rethuglican Bill Gates stole MS-DOS, as evidenced by M$ finally paying the poor shlub they stole it from $5,000,000, which probably didn’t even cover his legal bills from their stringing the case out for years and years.
watercarrier4diogenes-
Less heat, more light please.
Jumping on folks for their opinions is not the way to go.
I said nothing against Macs. They are a fine instrument. I am pissed that the “gifts” hve strings: By a Mac or I won’t contribute (Post #8.)
Where have we heard this before. Golly gee whiz! The Beltway!
What I did say is that some professionals I know are disappointed with the quad 4 Pro. That is not a phony fact. (a non sequitur: if it’s phony, it’s not a fact. Oh yes, phacts, not facts)
BTW, I do contract work at Intel. Engineering.
Correction: That’s “I am pissed that the “gifts” have strings: Buy a Mac or…”
not “I am pissed that the “gifts” hve strings: By a Mac or….”
Okay, I donated. I work in IT and also build computers as a hobby. I built myself a Mac a few weeks ago and I am thinking I will hopefully never have to use Windows again. I even moved some of my Linux apps over to my Mac. I love my Mac. I am a convert. Good luck on your computer quest.
Well, your the first person I ever heard actually built a Mac. I thought Apple would not sell an OS under those circumstances.
Since Apple decided to go with Intel chips, anyone can buy off the shelf parts and put it together. I built mine for under $630, including OS X, and it is just as powerful as their top of the line iMac without a screen and has lots of extras. OS X does not support everything so if you look in the dark parts of the internet you will find lists of what parts are supported.
OS X looks in the BIOS to see if the machine is really a Mac, but there is a simple way around that, as well.
Thanks!!!
Love Christy’s work. Fascinating and intelligent look at legal issues written in common sense language. Please keep us updated if you don’t get enough money.
I didnt see Christy helping us get our current computers, and I think she should goddanm well get it herself. If she cant afford it, do as we did, save more. Geez, and I thought the beggers were plentiful in India, at least there they had an excuse.
balzar at 111,
Fine, just don’t give, but leave the pettiness at home. And I hope you find a nice friend, seeing as you are on-line at 4:21 in the morning.
That was the point all along. I figure most of us come here because Jane and Ghristy and the rest that post here are the best in the business. For me, they are without a doubt. Until now I didn’t ever consider what kind of computer they had and the truth is, if we didn’t have computers they could all write their articles in crayons and I would still read them The ”Mac” thing was to make life easier for her, if, like some of us, Christy isn’t a computer whiz. PC’s got 95% or more of the market, right? That’s quantity over quality,( and the reason we all don’t drive a Rolls Royce). Back to the real problems in life, folks…….
Hmm.. Gee Doug, your response did not make a huge amount of sense. I am a night owl, this does not reflect on either the amount of friends I have, or the lack thereof. We (my wife and I) got our new computers, we cut some of our less important desires, did some saving (do you know what that is, doug?) and bought them, took a bit of time, but they are ours. Christy will get her computer, but she had to beg for it. Personally I think that is beneath her but each to his own I guess.
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I thought that this all started by Jane’s simple appeal to Christy’s friends at FDL to chip in and help her get a new computer. To label or otherwise call this begging or to call Christy a beggar, probably says more about you than anything else. If you don’t want to help Christy out, fine, that doesn’t make you a cheap bastard , but if the rest of us or any of us can /do, so what?
I would like to know more.
While I know well that Intel supplies the chips (or at least the cpu and likely, the mch) I also know their product line has it’s own niche.
Since you have built a computer with off the shelf components, the only thing a PC person needs is the BIOS tweak (shall I call it hack?). I am concerned that the system may not perform as well as one using parts intended for the Mac (not a quality issue, btw, a technical one).
Is it ok to publish e-mails here? Moderator? Is there a path to get mine to his without showing it here?
Quality over quantity? Hey, the last OS from either supplier will behave (unless the installation disk is bad) exactly like the first. The quality doesn’t go down because of quantity.
Besides, it isn’t a question of Mac vs PC so far as hardware (see post 108),it’s more of a question of Mac vs Dell, both Vs HP etc. And all buy from the same vendor stream.
I am fully in agreement with the OS differences. I would have a dual boot machine if one of the OS could be Leopard.
Dell has a lobbyist on McCain’ ticket so buying Dell only helps McCain!
Um, if I contribute to your fund, will you help me buy a new computer too?!
