I agree that we’re on a slippery slope with the loose/sloppy definition of terruh-izm. Especially in light of some of the executive orders we’ve been seeing.

Late in 2001, Bush actually attempted to differentiate between terrorists, freedom-fighters, and other groups. After a few months, however, he gave up trying to make an intellectually respectable distinction. Soon, “terrorist” simply became a synonym for “the bad guys,” and that label was slapped on anyone who worked for or with the wrong side.

IN an interesting linguistic phenomenon, teens (and valley girls?) began using the word “terrorists” in their own special ways, applying the term to each other in ways that I never really understood. I don’t know if that usage still persists. And my sister’s Native husband pronounces the word “tourist” so that it sounds like “terrorist.” To some in Indian country, there’s not much difference.

So now the word terrorists has once again become merely an epithet, hurled at people we don’t like, with only the most half-hearted attempt at any rigorous kind of definition.
