David Broder, today:
Her best, and most affecting, moments came when she briefly let her guard down. In early January, in Portsmouth, N.H., when asked how she steeled herself for every day on the trail, she choked up and, with moist eyes, said, "You know, this is very personal for me. It’s not just political. It’s not just public. I see what’s happening, and we have to reverse it."
[snip]
Those moments allowed people to see the passion and the empathy that have motivated Clinton all these years. But they have been few and far between; unlike Bill Clinton, this is a really private person.
Her inability to break through the scar tissue — the accumulated wounds of a demanding father, a wayward husband and countless political battles — may cost her the chance to be president.
Yes, the press was so welcoming when she "let her guard down" before NH.
When did Broder become a shrink, and following the training, how did he manage to become so unremittingly un-self-aware?
I wonder if his training addressed his personal penchant for sniffing the Senator’s panties?
Lest anyone miss the point, this armchair psychoanalysis is total, hot, steaming bullshit, projection masked as insight. I’m trained and I would never make the presumptive leaps laced throughout this dotard’s putrid drivel. May as well diagnose Terri Schiavo from a video screen.
Broder, like Russert and the rest of the celebrity pundit corps, see what they see because they believe what they believe, not vice versa, regarding any Democrat, most especially the Clintons, and most especially Hillary Clinton. And yet, they lack the honesty or integrity as a smugly sated class to acknowledge the ways they create the boundaries of what is deemed acceptable to discuss as political "reality" throughout the country.

Pach nice to see you.
Aloha, Pac.
Zed!
May as well diagnose Terri Schiavo from a video screen.
“Some say” it’s been done.
I bow to your assessment of the situation.
Hi Twain, Mauimom.
These are the words of a (two-bit) novelist, NOT a journalist. More proof of the abiding hackery common to too many Village members.
EP’ued from last thread and a little off topic:
Oh my Brattleboro is still at it. Today at the town meeting they will decide whether or not to indite Bush and Cheney!
http://www.timesargus.com/apps…..002/NEWS01
Since Brattleboro’s actions to put it on the town meeting ballot became public, he said, the group had been contacted by constitutional scholars who said it could be argued that the action is grounded in the concept of common law, and that it would be within the town’s right to issue an indictment.
Go Brattleboro!! Impeach the bastards!
Yep. I know nothing of the intimacies of her relationships with men in her private life, but I sure do know a lot about the ways she’s been treated, nay abused, by men – like Russert, Limbaugh, Tweety, Brian Williams and Broder – in her public life.
Condescending drivel.
All of this BS trying to divide the party is originating from Republicans…all of it…no matter whose mouthes or pens it comes from.
The goal of the Dems has to be focused…Kick the Neocons and their Republican minions out of our government. Every last boot-licking, slinking, corrupt one of them.
Repukes begone!!!
May as well diagnose Terri Schiavo from a video screen.
Paging Dr. Frist.
It is human to hate those whom we have injured. –Tacitus, Life of Agricola
Broder can’t let Hillary succeed any more than Limbaugh can allow McCain to.
Every time Dr. Frist diagnosis a patient a kitten dies.
“…the accumulated wounds of a demanding father, a wayward husband and countless political battles…” ~ Broder
Psychobabble. Blaming her demanding father on her campaign failure today is just laughable to me.
Just remember, it ain’t over until it’s over. It is not over at this point.
Powerful woman are the way they are cause of other people no matter if it is
positive or negative. And, of course, most powerful women are negative. That is what this dope is saying. I say we toilet paper his house.
Pach writes:
Simple. He learned from the master.
I’m afraid W has big plans for us…
Yes, since it violates the natural order for women to behave as leaders, then there must be some aberration to be explained.
Look no further than Jane’s previous post to this one, also (shock!) involving the ComPost.
Dr. King talked about the “content of our character” and that’s all that matters. Male, female, black, white, or brown or any other classification. Brody is a toady.
Nope. Not over. *sigh*
She has more than enough resources to hire the best shrinks money can buy.
I do have sympathy for her but sympathy wont make a good President.
Being a woman should be a positive not a tool.
I’d vote for a woman, just not this one, not this time.
Adding, this stuff applies to all Democrats, since all Democratic men are secretly, somehow, women, according to the chattering pundit class.
This is why we need psycho white men who want to turn the Middle East into glass to “protect us,” nevermind uphold an oath to the Constitution.
Pach, in that last paragraph, you misspelled “poundits.”
Men and women of color, black through white. Women and men of different languages. Men and women of compassion. Women and men of different religions. Or of no religion at all. Men and women of different life styles. It is time to unite. I beseech you.
Lahoma.
We sure don’t see pundits psychologizing Senator McTemper, do we. Or opining about how a prisoner of war cannot abide the idea of “giving in.”
(And I am not going to go there either, because as a trained psychologist, I know not only how specious the effort is, but how unethical.)
The big lie about all of this is that it is not about “gender” or “race”, it is about Republicans not wanting to lose power to the Democrats. The gender and race crappola is just a red herring…if Condoleeza Rice were running, they’d all be salivating to get her to replace W.
So forking sexist. No matter what it is bad to be female even if you are a democratic man/secret woman.
Kiddo, glad you’re back. ;-)
IIRC, didn’t MoDo expound the other day about how HRC was the most “masculine” of the Dem contenders?
The gibberish spouted by the Villagers has no logic, no coherence and is meant mainly to make them feel that they have contributed something of value with their verbal diarrhea
The WaPo is on a tear today, Charlotte Allen and David Broder. In the Times business section we are treated to an explanation of the darlings at Exxon-Mobile by the inane Ben Stein. Warning: reading Stein will make you stupid for at least 30 minutes.
I think it is Lahoma
Hi L
That’s okay, because Charlotte thinks the women out here are stupid all the time. D’Oh…..
Oh. *blushing*
Hey Wapo, quit trying to define everyone. Idjiots.
Mainly, they say whatever their corporate masters want them to say. Dean Broder, like Russert, Tweety and Brain Williams are shameless whores working for fat clients with fat wallets. Limbaugh will come around and join the Strayt Talk Express. Being contrary now lends a sense that he is a real journalist. Rush will begin to like McCain when it counts.
“Lest anyone miss the point, this armchair psychoanalysis is total, hot, steaming bullshit, projection masked as insight. I’m trained and I would never make the presumptive leaps laced throughout this dotard’s putrid drivel. May as well diagnose Terri Schiavo from a video screen.”
Beautifully put. I wish I had said that!
Why would you not vote for Hillary? Would you prefer McCain?
I dunno, I think the Pukes might have plans for McCain…W said the other day that although he’s confident a Puke will be President, he’s not sure McCain will be that Puke. A day is an eternity in politics.
I would never say it, but those might be the only panties that “Dean” Broder (old, decrepit and senile are no way to go through life, son) ever gets to sniff…
What, you don’t think Richard Cohen shares his hookers in hiked skirts?
Yet another example to thin the herd. There are just too many people lounging at the shallow end of the gene pool
Let’s see….Venezuela has troops on the Columbian border….the USS Cole is deployed off the coast of Lebanon…W has a new Executive Order seizing or freezing Syrian assets…Cheney wants to bomb Iran…..most of the troops in Iraq are Reserves or NG….
We’ve got a brand new hornets nest developing…
80% of America is against Bushco’s war-mongering, but they are trying to drum up a bunch more war….meanwhile nothing is getting reported out there because all we hear 24/7 is Hillary/Obama/Hillary/Obama/Sex/Race/Sex/Race…
The Dean is a wealthy SOB. He can fly himself to Vegas or anywhere else where prostitution is legal and rent himself a 20 year old beauty. As long as the paychecks keep coming, he’ll discuss the topics of his masters’ choosing and slant them the way that his masters’ strongly suggest.
Ecuador is also pissed off at colombia for invading it’s airspace. *sigh*
I think the Washington Post should run a disclaimer that says something like this:
after every Broder column. In the interest of full disclosure and all that…
I dont believe she will win.
Exactly, and the public in general is completely oblivious to what is happening because of the political media saturation. People would be really furious if they got a chance to hear the truth….drives me bonkers.
Things are going swimmingly, no? How’s the grandkids by the way? LOL
Focus on the happy things. Don’t let those things or $4/gallon gas worry your beautiful mind. Just keep asking yourself “What would Bushie do?”, Remember, Jenna’s getting married!
I have stepkids (15 and 18)…I hope they don’t have any kids I don’t know about!!! LOL
Columbia is our only friend in the region, because Dubya has been buying them off. There’s a ton of money going to Columbia to fight the bogus war on drugs. As always, the money lines the pockets of the inside players. The Columbian media plays Dubya (and the US) as a good guy and a majority of the Columbian people are buying the meme.
Maybe Bush’s war-profiting will be Jenna’s dowry….
Don’t they understand? Nancy has worked so hard to keep impeachment off the table to focus on really more important things like….well….I’m sure there’s something.
My comment was more tongue-in-cheek than reflecting your real status. I was just trying to divert my OWN attention away from what the Pigs in the White House are doing. That’s all. Trying to make myself feel better by asking you how the family was, you know, ignoring the “bombs” dropping around us as we chit chat. ;-)
I had to lol this morning when I heard Mary Matalin spew about how much she “loves Poppy Bush”….Doesn’t she know that he is referred to as “Poppy” named after the CIA heroine poppy connections…LMAO.
Surely, Jenna hasn’t a care in the world beyond her wedding plans. She must be fully aware of the fact that she is set for life financially. After all, when you are Republican what else is there?
Colombia is our only ‘political’ friend in the region. But given our foreign policy in the region, can’t really blame the results.
Heck yeah! War profiteering has long been a Bush family business! Who sez they’re not serving (themselves) in Iraq?
baseball bad boys
I know, I was just joking that I hoped no one has any hidden kids…
Every Bush counts on the fact that the family trust funds are vast and have been growing since Jan 2001 like no other period. Mission Accomplished!
Its encouraging to know that many South American countries have been able to set their own agenda and pursue social and political policies that will help insure their own success and that of their citizens. Neocon preoccupation with the ME has helped them.
Yes. I know. LOL
The only thing I take from Clinton’s 3AM commercial is that on 3AM Wednesday morning, she’s going to be looking at a clear idea of her future.
The Jack Nicholson commercial is I guess supposed to make me want to see more movies but I don’t know what it has to do with a Democratic primary.
I was reminded that Clinton has foriegn policy experience.
She was in Bosnia when the Secret Service moved the location of her husgand’s speech because of sniper fire in the general area.
This is good news. It means that the economy will be helped in the following way: Anyone in a lower income area who is critically stabbed this week or shot and has a major vessel or the aorta injured, will upon recovery automatically qualify as a general or vascular surgeon and will immediately be qualified to practice. After all they got stabbed, they had surgery so they now are experienced in trauma.
I sure liked Howard Wolfson pushing the Afghanistan oversight issue today, because it turns out that Obama sits on no oversight committee whatsoever that deals with Afghanistan.
Wolfson’s employer Clinton sits on three committees overseeing Afghanistan affairs for the U.S. I don’t know if Wolfson and the Glover Park Group who are sending the Clinton campaign multimillion dollar bills aren’t talking to Senator Clinton, or she doesn’t remember or realize who between her and Obama sits on the Senate Committees that actually oversee Afghanistan (LOL):
Earth to Wolfson and Clinton and Stephanopolis:
Senator Clinton is the only Candidate Sitting on Three Senate Committees who oversee forces in Afghanistan Period!

What Jack nicholson commercial?
i just saw King Hussain’s speach to Foreign Service school;
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..89205.html
I think this has been in the front page News Box for quite a while now.
Saw a TV commercial with an Obama-lookalike as a ‘pizza delivery person’; thought how odd it might look after Jan ‘09; thought how much energy in this country could be released and redirected to higher goals.
Matalin is right. Poppy is adorable! I fondly recall the manner in which he shaved himself from stem to stern, oiled up and inserted himself up Reagan’s asshole for political expedience. Good Show! Without that heroic act, where would they be today?
It sure doesn’t. I’d expect immunity in some form soon, and that is your last chance to find out details on how Bush Co and Telcom lawyers broke the law with warrantless wiretapping since 2000 and the many quid pro quos involved.
Glenn Greenwald on FISA
Pete,
If you really feel the need to repeatedly post the same comment in each new thread, perhaps you could at least shorten it by linking to one in the previous thread.
Isn’t St. John a ‘wayward husband’ ?
…and to think Poppy got himself a nice ole 1980’s drug smuggling cigarette boat out of those years!

And here’s the day last July when Georgie Porgie threw out the anchor and got it stuck between the rocks below. Myself and others were protesting him near the Kennebunkport compound when the ding-dong did this…

This one with several clips from his movies supporting Clinton:
Nicholson’s Ridiculous Campaing ad
I’m not sure where the trained professional is in Clinton’s background as to foreign affairs or national security. I must have missed that part of her autobiography. I also don’t find anything sexy about saluting Clinton–so I’ll have to skip doing that.
She was there when the Secret Service moved her husband’s speech to another locationin Bosnia. She was put in the bullet proof limo.
What’s more interesting as to her foreign affairs accumen is that she has her multimillion dollar man Howard Wolfson on ABC this morning clucking about Obmaa not supervising relationships with Afghanistan and the military when Obama is on no commitee whatsoever that does this and Hillary Clinton is on no less than three committees that do exactly that (or haven’t done it very well). What a disorganized hypocritical campaign.
(the Secret Service had to swim down to dislodge the anchor)
Oh, he is a supporter of Clinton, nothing wrong with that.
It’s a good ad. The SNL sketches are even better.
Don’t watch SNL, so I can’t comment but i find nothing wrong with anyone (celebrities included) who want to publicly support their candidate.
Yes, he is. Like Newt, Henry Hyde, Ronald Reagan, and many other Republicans. However, that is not approved dialogue. The word wayward can only be used when referring to a Democrat. Fair and Balanced. Liberal Media.
On the confiscated (stolen) boat, Dubya wasn’t sitting by his daddy. He’s standing out in the wind looking stupid as usual. Daddy had to sit with one of his crooked buddies.
See, that is exactly why the Pukes are better on National Security…LOL
Guess its a bitch to be an unapproved dope runner. The big guys will take your shit and put you in prison (or worse). The connected ones have a license to steal.
I don’t get the Nicholson “pro-Clinton” commercial either. Most of the characters who are “endorsing her” are typical Nicholson crazy men…The Joker, the crazed ruthless Special Forces officer (who epitomizes everything which is wrong with what’s going on in Iraq BTW), the father from the Shining who is talking with a ghost, and the drug-dealing character in “Five Easy Pieces” who assaults a brusque (and obviously stressed out) waitress for simply following diner policy (and asks him if he wants to speak with the manager).
“Five Easy Pieces” Diner Scene
Not sure if these are exactly the sort of endorsements Hillary wants, or needs. Maybe she’s trying to attract some of the Ron Paul libertarian types?
Yeah but to be fair, i don’t think her campaign solicited or made the commercial, or?
There’s nothing wrong with him having a choice to support a candidate of course. I don’t see however what the commercial has to do with Clinton.
I also don’t see what foreign policy experience she is supposed to have or where she is supposed to have gotten it.
She can’t even communicate to her goofy top aide Howard Wolfson that it is not Obama who serves on oversight committees LOL for Afghanistan–Obama doesn’t serve on any Foreign Relations commitee for Afghanistan–John Kerry does. Afghanistan is not in Europe but neither Stephanopolis nor Wolfson seem to have learned that. Obama’s sub is for European affairs.
In fact as I pointed out, it is Clinton who serves on no less than three Armed Forces Commitees that directly deal with forces in Afghanistan. That seemed to escape Wolfson this morning when he tried to blame Obama for oversight of Afghanistan. It was a patent lie by Wolfson because he’s lazy.
who knows, i guess i was his creative conytribution *g*
contribution
In all fairness, don’t you think it is just Jack Nicholson, the actor, who is endorsing her, because he feels passionately about her as the best candidate in his own mind….Men and women like HRC and men and women like Obama and men and women like McCain…just sayin’ not flamin’ *g*
Couldn’t this be said about John McCain as well? Except for the wayward husband bit which would clearly refer to McCain himself.
In my version of Hell, Broder and Brooks would share a closed room and could only talk to each other using snippets from their own columns.
thanks LS, that is what I was trying to say
Give me a break. Of course the solicited it. I don’t criticize them for soliciting anyone they want to campaign or make commercials for them. That’s what politicians do. I just don’t think the 3AM Red Phone or Nicholson commercials have anything to do with her or help her at all.
Again the 3AM red phone with the Rosemary’s Baby pictures of a sleeping infant are supposed to convey that Clinton has National Security and foreign affairs credentials so I want her on the phone at 3AM. As numerous super delegates are starting to point out–she really has no more claim to experience than Obama, and many people question her claim to judgement which is far more important than experience in the Oval office anyway.
I would be willing to bet strongly that experience which has been the infrastructure of Clinton’s campaign is about to come crashing down with a big thud on Tuesday. And it should. It’s been a huge facade.
The only crises Clinton has ever had to manage have been while her husband was campaigning and his affair with Jennifer Flowers got inconveniently in the way. I don’t care if Clinton goes steady with fifty sheep from the nearest barnyard or who or what he sleeps with.
But the sex scandals and the Rose Law firm documents that took her 18 months to produce (Tony Rezko was immediately jailed by a former White Water investigator when he didn’t produce financial documents) were the only crises she faced. When the same Judge Amy St. Eve was on the Whitewater team that subpoenaed documents from Clinton in a criminal investigation, Clinton thumed her nose at them and didn’t produce any documents for 18 months. I’d say that there is no assistant US Attorney who would issue a subpoena for documents–and have failure to produce for 18 months and that would certainly include LHP and Christy Hardin Smith at their former jobs.
She has never faced a foreign affairs crisis, and the fact that she was married to someone who has and claiming experience is like someone married to a cardiovascular surgeon who isn’t a doctor saying she can crack a chest and perform a CABG. It doesn’t fly and it won’t fly Tuesday.
Hackles down, you don’t know any more than I do whether it was solicited or not. If you do, give me a link. I was referring to the Jack nicholson ad, not the 3am fiasco of an ad.
Take it down a notch
Sure of course. I’m not hung up on Nicholson making a commercial supportive of Clinton. He’s about as independent as it gets and no one forced him to make the commercial. He did it because he supported his candidate. I couldn’t make the connection though to why it conveyed she should be Pres. I guess it was made in hopes that if you like Jack, and his movies, you’ll vote for her.
The 3AM and the fear tactics though IMHO are more problematic. She keeps trying to say that Obama is some kind of wussie and he would be dumbfounded if he were faced with a crisis or how to manage a bill through Congress. In fact, this morning Axlerod ticked off several pieces of legislation he has played a positive part in. Wolfson ticked off none. What people remember about Clinton’s time in the Senate (7 years to 4 years by the way) is her votes on the biggest issues that involved American life in safety.
Try to tell the people in Dover coffins who have been blown up because of the lack of protective vehicles that aren’t in Iraq as I type this that they’re safe. Try to tell that to their families. And which of the two candidates is on the Senate Armed Forces Committee and three subs directly responsible for Iraq and Afghanistan? Clinton. And what did her top aide Wolfson do this morning. He went on ABC This Week and lied through his teeth, and Stephanopolis was his dupe who didn’t know any better despite a summa degree from Columbia in Political Science and being ABC’s Chief Washington Correspondent. Both of them jumped on Axelrod incorrectly blaming Obama for Afghanistan oversight when it was in fact Clinton, who sits on 3 committees to oversee Afghanistan and Iraq.
Did Axelrod drop the ball for Obama by not laying into them for being incorrect as I just pointed out?
You betcha.
It was beautiful….while we were protesting, ole Dumbass was out in the boat trying to impress some vacationers who were standing on the beach in the cove they were in. He threw the anchor thinking it would be a good photo for his ‘fans’, but he ended up making a complete jackass of himself. Loved it!
Exactly LS! Bush always gets others to do what he can’t do. LOL
PetePiece, since you keep bringing up Hillary being on 3 different Committees. May I remind you that Sen. Susan Collins has never missed a vote in the Senate, but yet, most of her votes have been against Americans and pro-Bush. See? It doesn’t matter how many times these assholes vote or what Committees they’re on, because they’ve been part of the problem.
I don’t care whether it was solicited or not. I am not writing clearly enough for you.
I just don’t see what the point of the commercial was to make me vote for Clinton if I had a vote for her and she wasn’t going to be out of the race in 48 hours or less.
Tell me that Obama is on any committee that oversees Afghanistan troops as her manager Wolfson said this morning, and Stephanopolis stupidly clucked his agreement. It is Clinton that is on three committees and Obama is on none that have to do with troops anywhere.
I haven’t heard the words armored vehicles out of Clinton’s mouth once. She doesn’t like to talk about Iraq–she knows it translates into Obama votes.
85% of the deaths of Americans in Iraq are because of roadside (under the road actually) IEDs and their sequela. Most of these deaths need never have happened if protective vehicles were there. They die and are injured almost exclusively while riding in vehicles not while walking.
2005 Vehicles Not There Clinton is prominent member of Senate Armed Forces Committee and the Subcomittee on Readiness and Management Support
Feb. 2008 Armored Vehicles Not in Iraq; Clinton is still prominent member of Senated Armed Forces Commitee and the Subcomitee on Readiness and Management Support
As Hillary says every 10 words “Ya Know or Y’Know take your choice:
A Wake Up Call for Hillary
2 more days and Clinton can talk to whomever she likes at 3AM and pick any shade of phone as well. I’ll buy her a red phone.
from the AP:
Vincent Anania, the father-in-law of onetime Democratic presidential contender and former Sen. John Edwards, has died. He was 87.
I didn’t even raise this as an issue so what the heck is your damn problem? I simply made a statement about whether the Nicholson ad was solicited or not so whatever issue you have is your issue.
thanks for the heads up. My deepest condolences to the family.
Kay I don’t think you’ll find me doing anything but strongly agreeing with the many fine points you have made as to Republicans in Congress or anywhere else.
I have learned to group Collins, Snow, and Leiberman closely together because literally they have joined in supporting so many non-productive or even destructive positions and votes in the last few years.
There have been a lot of articles written documenting that there are always MRAP type vehicles surrounding Bush or Cheney anywhere they travel including the Texas ranch.
It was totally irresponsible of the Clinton campaign’s Wolfson to go on one of the most watched network TV programs for news and lie about who is responsible in the Senate for soldiers in the field.
So. How does it feel to be talked at rather than with?
meaning what?
Wobbly–
I’m gonna leave this. I have no problem with you and I’m not arguing for whatevers sakes. I made my points about the disingenuousness of Wolfson on ABC this morning. I’m sorry I wasn’t there to make it then.
I made my points that her commercial have become awfully similar to the ones the RNC is funding on FISA right now because the 3AM Red Phone commercial was.
You go out and vote for Clinton if you can and want. And if you want to support her, you might consider pulling an all nighter tonight and tomorrow night and Tuesday night because after that, you won’t see her very much on your TV screen. Enjoy the first part of the week.
The same way it must feel when someone is all about snark but can’t make any cogent points.
I have already voted in the primary (I’m part of the doesn’t count demographic)
I’m an Obama supporter
Dakine like most people here gets very upset if anyone criticizes Le Clinton and translates that its sexist yada yada and yada. Boy will it be a great morning Wednesday morning.
other points:
the only issue I raise was about whether Nicholson’s ad was solicited by Hillary’s campaign or not. You chose to read/ attribute a myriad of other things to my comment, with that said, I bid you a wonderful week
if nothing else, the unprofessional, never-good-enough-no-matter-what public treatment of Hilliary Clinton has PROVED America is an exceptionally sexist culture. There is nothing substantive that the sorry ass excuses for political, jounalistic, chattering class, and…AND left blogosphere commentariat has yet to say about Hillary Clinton. Instead they spew their drivel, their demeaning, sanctimonious crap that she is too weak, too strong, too unreachable, too calculating, too this, and too this – it is NEVER good enough, NEVER right. No other candidate has been subjected to such utter crap, even though most, if not all are far, FAR more deserving of scrutiny.
It has been absolutely sickening. Not surprising, but sickening – especially the left blogosphere part. David Broder and his ilk, including many in the left blogosphere are truly ignorant piss-poor excuses for human beings.
Hillary Clinton has been a goddamn abused battering ram for all women taking shit that no one else has to take for no reason other than that she is a women. On the one hand, unlike Blacks voting 90% for Obama I applaud all women for voting not based on gender, but presumably on other important features where Clinton has garnered only 55-60% of the women vote. But on the other hand I am saddened that all women have not rallied to her side in outrage at the exclusive abuse she has borne because she is a woman – a very smart concerned, energetic woman that apparently threatens the very immature, small-minded Broder’s of the world.
.
You’re only part of the doesn’t count demographic if Harold Ickes steels the Super Delegates, the phony non-election in Florida and Michigan. And right now, Ickes knows he failed.
By the way, I feel like I should apologize to you for coming down so hard on Chelsea yesterday. I freak out about shit like that because she is the least of our worries right now. So, I’m sorry I was such an ass. ;-)
Nerves are running high and I for one can’t wait for November
You know if Clinton runs away with Nicholson and Bill runs away with the babes on the Burkle jets it’s fine with me. Have a good one.
Well I’m a grad student– so my demographic doesn’t count
Pete,
As I’ve stated before, I am not enthralled by either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama but will vote for whichever one is the Democratic party nominee in November 2008. All I have ever asked of you is to hold your candidate to the same standard you hold Senator Clinton.
But it is fun seeing you trashing wobblybits, knowing that she has been a very staunch supporter of Senator Obama, albeit one who IS willing to be consistent in her beliefs.
Yuck, don’t need that image
I think that things will calm down early morning of Wednesday March 5, 2008 if not late night Tuesday March 4, 2008. You don’t have long to wait.
We won’t flame this any more than necessary. It’s all over now–he has had his say and I have had mine.
pleuge–
I just don’t know how to say this. Many of us who criticize Clinton, or promote Obama, or defend him, or as I have this morning criticize both of them and the media for waving this phony NAFTA wand in front of America, are not using her for a battering ram or bashing women.
As I have watched this campaign unfold, I imagine gender perceptions are simply inevitable and would be less showcased, or prevelant if we had had more women presidents and more globally less glass ceilings.
I am reminded of Twain’s comments the other day that she is a grandmother of 4 and has 4 children and that when she began in the workforce, women with extraordianry abilities were limited to jobs as secretaries with no chances for promotions and it is not difficult to understand the concern or the intensity of feelings that the same glass ceiling inequity is being superimposed or inflicted on Hillary Clinton.
But that’s just not the case for many of the people who get outraged by her fear tactics and unfair grabbing of credentials that she just doesn’t have in a comparison with Obama. He knows it; I know it, and there are two separate issues.
Treating women fairly is one profound issue.
Criticism of Clinton as the lesser of the two candidates in the Democratic party is a completely discrete issue.
The two aren’t joined.
I never thought it was anything like a flame. People here should be comfortable with arguing issuesor disagreeing. That’s one way to learn and to rethink your position. I get corrected. I try to incorporate what someone is saying to me into my thinking or why type if you were to think you were having a conversation with only your keyboard and monitor.
To me flaming is when you call the person that disagrees with you some deroggatory name or say “they’re an idiot for not agreeing with you” and that wastes time and space.
Yesterday I had a few people say I was stupid, that I was one of the left wing lizard brains, and one person who is an economist made a drive by shooting diagonsis of LOL OCD, but of the two of us–the economist and my self, only one of us has any training along those lines or has been to med school.
Have a good one.
Peter, I was telling Dakine not to flame what transpired between you and I.
The thing is, you’d have to make the assumption there though that I see everything through the prism of “us against them”–my candidate or the highway, and that’s just not the case or as Jane Hamsher said yesterday–whatever the headline is, it seemed to her that was what was going to happen. I don’t think that’s the case.
We had two headlines however on the Sunday Morning talk shows, and I watched the worst kind of lie come straight from the mouth of one of the top 3 Clinton people. It was meant to trash Obama in the wake of fear mongering commercials. That’s all I was trying to convey.
I completely enjoy talking with you and respect all your ideas. If I gave the wrong idea or impression on the Nicholson commercial I didn’t mean to.
I have to say though this makes me reflect on all these very expensive commercials that are flooding affiliate markets not only in these campaigns but local ones. You ought to see how ridicuolous the ones are when we have a gubenetorial election or elections for even local judges are some other local official.
We have commercials for judges trying to get elected calling each other scumbags right and left.
I understand.
I never joined the issue of Clinton’s policies and politics verses how she has been treated by the chattering idiots of all persuasions. So don’t project on to me. You don’t like her politics or her policies – fine. The post is not about Clinton’s politics or policies, its about Broder’s usual character assassination and trivialization in lieu of political assessment.
.
Thanks Peter
Pete not Peter, sorry
Broder is a senile pathetic joke and has no business writing for and being published in a major newspaper, and he has no business not being a head shrink in real life but one that just plays one in the newspaper and on TV.
Reading Broder is like marking the history books for fifty or so years down the road for when people who have had time enough to take a breather from this bad joke (or had never lived through it) of the mess we are in can look into the Broder file to see just how blatantly stupid the people were who had the biggest stages to post or yell out their stupidity.
Broder is a (insert several swear words here) complete ass and a fool. He proves that fact time and again.
I wasn’t projecting onto you as far as I can tell at least the way the word is used in the psychiatric literature. I was empathizing–and sometimes any criticism is translated as a statement against women–I have to tell you–I try to read widely and I chose English as one of my majors to try to make sure that would happen–and I haven’t seen the word misogyny much at all in many years.
Maybe you could say I’m not steeped in feminist lit, but it’s just not a word I’ve seen much at all until lately with comments about a woman running for President.
I never saw the word homeland for a lot of years ever used in this country anywhere until the Bush Robocops, the Homeland Security types, and the Repubilcan dittoheads started making it very popular. What about this country wasn’t a “homeland” before 9/11/01? Why wasn’t the word used? Why was it ever used. The only time in my entire life I’ve seen it used before now was when I was told to read Ibsen plays in school as an assignment.
I understand what the post is about, but in truth not every comment in threads that average into the 200s often on weekdays stay consistently within the context of the post. Maybe they should. I’m not trying to be OT or ever ‘hijack’ a thread.
I have seen scores of headline posts that all have a common denominator lately–the excoriation of women as refracted through Senator Clinton during her candidacy. I have never thought reading David Broder was that worthwhile–any of his columns–in the last several years on a number of counts.
YOU’RE apologizing to Pete Pierce? !!!!
If I remeber in the last debate she brought it up. And Obama answer was not really all that great. He didn’t dispute her about hte committee.
The shame of it all. Like Hester Prynne and that Scarlet “A”–i.e. Marilyn you think it’s about the commenters instead of the issues correct?
I don’t remember the transcript of the debate, but if she brought it up she was dead wrong as I’ve proved and he should have made that clear. He knows that he’s not on any committtee that oversees Afghanistan and he knows she’s the one on Armed Forces which by definition does. However there is often overlap and John Kerry chairs a sub on Foreign Relations that deals with Afghanistan.
When you really get down to it though, those committees like many parliamentary organizatins all have stately, lofty titles and how much oversight has there been the last 7 years would be more the point I suppose. That’s why we all want new and better Congress people and a Democrat in the White House.
I didn’t see it that way at all. And everyone gets a little intense because for all of us who we want as candidates, and what they stand for gets inevitably intertwined with or reflected from personal experience. So when someone is critical of Chelsea, people often empathize and say, I see that in my daughter and I don’t want anyone picking on her. etc.
Or often with Hillary Clinton, although she may mean manythings to many people, I have had a lot of women (I live in a very “politically active” area of town and there are an awful lot of Hillary Clinton signs up in yards–big ones–and Clinton bumper stickers) say to me who have a very deep knowledge of issues and politics “Look all the issues aside. What controls this for me or what is dominant is that it’s just long overdue for a woman to be President. I think she’s a very well qualified woman, and I honestly don’t know when there will be another chance to even vote for a woman for President. And that’s the bottom line–that’s why I’m in her corner.” I’ve heard it a lot from people around me and I respect that. For them, it is reason enough.
My, aren’t we condescending?
