Warner Bros Pictures, Inc. present Looney Tunes’ Baseball Bugs, starring Bugs Bunny vs the Gas House Gorillas. A little birdie told me that Spring Training opened this week so of course I had to reply "FTFY".
As always, this is Late Late Nite FDL, where off topic is the topic so chime in.

Baseball!
Hi suzanne
batter up!
hey ct
how ya been felix – haven’t seen ya in a while
So, what’s your take on Roger Clemens?
sucks!!!
sorry, couldn’t resist
Heh, my BoSox in a Split Squad showing against BC and NEU scored 39 runs and the pitching gave up no runs…! My Champs are back in the saddle…! *g*
FTFY — thanx for the reminder, Suz
liar liar
I never pay attention in the off season, and not always much during the regular season, so … did the Astros do anything to shore up their pitching for this year? Oswalt is only one guy …
what do you think this is – a sports blog (wink)
Dang Skippy! FTFY!!!
And Clemen’s career seems to be in jeopardy! ;-)
uh, as Suz just said- liar. I used to love Baseball. Was gonna abbreviate that as BB, but I then realized someone might think I was saying something about the other “BB”.
Ouch! That’s gonna leave a mark!
FTFY comes, of course, from Gilly, RIP. TGNB has been doing a fine job of keeping his vision going and they have FTFY in their sidebar.
I’ll behave Suz, it’s your thread…! 8-)
I’ve never been a fan of baseball. I wasn’t really exposed to it as my parents are from a soccer obsessed country and then I went and married a guy from yet another soccer obsessed country. I finally broke down and went to a game with some friends a few years back and the best part was the hot dogs (pre-raw food days)
i was teasing ya CT – such a fine chain ya had danglin there and i could not resist yanking on it.. i did do a (wink)
hmmm garlic fries
Cool, I do like the fact that Joe Torre is wearing Dodger Blue…! ;-)
oh and the peanuts. i gorged myself silly
Hey CT, Suz asked me recently and I couldn’t remember the details…what was our deal last fall?
You guys think you are sooooo smart. Well, then, who is Carl Spackler?
hint: not baseball
I thought it was spring training opening day, CT, and the boss man said he thought it was opening day of the season.
Please remember who put up this wonderful cartoon for you ct when you answer (/s)
Mary is watching HBO!
I fess up to my ignorance and laziness not to use teh google
But it’s still sports. :)
I’m alright!!
Aww, ya would have to intervene… Opening Day, when My BoSox play the Athletics in the Tokyo Dome…! 8-P
Carl Spackler is the grounds keeper in CaddyShack. He is my alter ego.
CT, are you saying that this post is suffering from a premature posting episode and should not have gone up for several weeks?
fork – dang it – RBG was right and I was wrong. fork.
caddy shack?
that’ll work for me, Ma Cheri!
…so do we declare peace on your thread?… *G*
ahoy slobs
Suz – if I use the word “base” and the word “ball” in a comment, is that considered a “sports take?”
Just cuz she’s wrong doesn’t mean you get to renege ;>)
but i’m not into baseball–excpet wrt to the Yankees and the BoSox…i like the antics of players and officials…
Hopefully! 8-)
http://www.carlspackler.com/sounds.html
CT, yes, I remember some negotiation as to which date it would be. And, I go with the Suz/ Boss Man final take.
And, if I tell you to back off on BB, then that is what you should do. Still awaiting the avocado pudding recipe. ;)
wrong.. fork, does that mean this becomes that which we can not mention for another month?
baseball isn’t my thing so I’ll go read a bit.
you all have a good one.
boa noite
wobbly, off topic is the topic – what book are you reading?
In the words of Jean-Paul Sartre “au revoir monsieur gopher”.
What was it you told Thers earlier about it was his post?
Suz- do I need to come up with an OT topic?
Oops! Yes’m, sorry about my senior moment on the recipe! I’ll refrain until gametime… A momentous occasion indeed, a series of games that actually count towards the record that have been played on foreign soil, other than Canada…! 8-)
since i don’t parley vue – does that mean you are saying g’nite?
“It’s in the hole! It’s in the hole!”
fork – busted again
Oh, I don’t want to disturb the baseball vibe *g*
The book i’m reading is an old brasilian classic by Jorge Amado, Gabriela, Cravo e Canela
nope
http://www.carlspackler.com/sounds/156.mp3
You are such a hoot!
One does what one can.
Well, there was a pretty lively discussion w/ Thers on the last thread about Jane Austen.
And also, somehow it got into detective novels… ;) (oh, wait, I can explain)
woohoo – unka sherman is back and dirty boogie is back on the pig
Love ONE
*g* sorry i missed the thread but hubby was playing some new mixes for me (he dj’s on the side)
Recently read “Daughter of Fortune” – Isabel Allende. Just is case this is a BB (best books) thread. ;)
VG, I can’t reference the exact recipe, but, an eight inch graham cracker pie shell, 1-8oz package Cream Cheese, three medium avocados, enough for a two to one ratio with the CC… a little lemon juice and 1/4 cup Sugar… Blend well and dole into the shell, then chill for at least two hours!
drooling…
Mostly lurking,it’s what I do best.
I used to see Isabel Allende sometimes in San Rafael. She lives there.
CT- okay, thanks. I will adjust according to my tastes. I’ll use the CC and avocados and lemon juice, but leave out the graham cracker pie shell and the sugar, thanks. Really, CC and Avos sounds like a great combo.
I got lost in YouTube, looking for the Duckman on baseball. The artist was my college boyfriend. The guy I should have married…
Wouldn’t trade my daughters though.
It is really good! I lived on an avocado farm when I was a lot younger…!
nice to see ya poke your head outta the lurk hole and come up for air.
OK, Who knows “Ride with the Devil?
Hi Felix. Me too (lurk).
A little honey would work too, it needs a little kick of sweetness…!
this ride with the devil?
Toby, Skeet, Jewel Kincher, etc.
Good film.
:-)
Oh NO!
head hanging in shame and glad i asked it as a question
Oh Yes, such a great film.
Mary- I first bought “Daughter of Fortune” bec. of what I read on the book jacket about the tale ending in CA during the Gold Rush. But, I ended up being totally captivated by the story and the prose. She really does have a way of creating a sober kind of magic, with stealthy sensuous prose. (hehe.. my alliteration quotient for the month…)
Suz, I will always love you…
thanks christine e – can i come out of the corner now?
I was surprised to see a very good film about the Confederate side of that war. Ang Lee. I should have known.
what were you doing in the corner? It’s your post!!!
uh ah well, uh, cleaning?
We are watching “Ride with the Devil” Ouch!
“Plot Keywords: Breast Suckling and Breast Feeding” Huh…? ;-)
You’ve cleaned enough, young lady.
Sit! relax! You want guilt? I’ll give you guilt. The gift that never stops giving. ;)
You are so bad.
But yeah.
Good morning Suzanne.
Baseball I can do, this I only wish I could…
Hop, hop, hop!
Was at Festivals des Lumières in old Montréal, an hour ago, the thing goes on all night. Here are a few pics I took.
http://picasaweb.google.com/pi…..21l5t0efyI
did you get my EPU’d comments last thread…
Aww… I may have a predilection, but, I’m certainly not bad…! Bwhahaha…! *g*
Nice pics. Look cccccooooollllllddddd.
Ang Lee is quite amazing. Harking back to the last thread, aka the Jane Austen/ Thers thread, he directed Sense and Sensibility. At the time I was bowled over by how someone who was from a totally different time and place and continent could have such an acutely accurate interpretation.
I did not. Send it to me now, Biodun.
my real estate agent does guilt much better than that margot (laughing)
Yep. As we were talking about “Ride With The Devil”, for someone from that distant culture to bring great vision to a Civil War tale… Amazing.
Thanks Mary. Not that cold, about 22f. A bit of wind closer to the water, but, nothing a healthy old man like me couldn’t handle.
While we are harking back to the last thread, I did not see any responses to my question re: Jane Austen, “Where should I start?” Seriously, any recommendations? (realizing that there are so many books I want to read that I may only get around to reading one of hers this decade or so)
I remember a lot more illuminated ice sculptures, when I had visited, in the early Eighties… Was there many more?
fork
nice to visit but…. brrrrrr
Bonjour Biodun, isn’t it time for un petit déjeuner? Croissant, café et marmalade…
Emma
first one
Second one
your question: will it work there–depends on said laptop, year, whetehr it has integrated wireless for hotspot wifie , and so on.
eminem
i had the petit dejeuner at 1:15 AM Paris Time…
I would love to speak French. But as I don’t… Please translate.
Thanks.
without me
petit dejeuner-little, tiny breakfast
*g* Eminen–the white rapper? Not exactly Jane Austen’s cup ‘o tea.
neuro- “Where should I start?” Emma would be my first rec. Emma as a character is so delightfully wrong-headed. The most “famous” is Pride and Prejudice, but it’s so familiar it terms of plot and characters and outcome that it would be my def. second choice.
one never knows do one?
Thanks Mary.
Miss you mañana.

BBC World Service Radio Live: Israeli-Palestinian conflict gets worse…
like i said, double-dipping…but i probably need to step outside for that walk to Gare du Nord to get some euros, especially if i want to impress and treaty new girlfriend the exotic novelist tonight–i guess we’re both exotic…at we speak English and French..maybe I can get her a US passport after we get married…But I’m getting way ahead of myself here…*g*
Hey CT, not for this festival, that ice wall is part of a slide that goes down Place Jacques-cartier. The Québec winter fest would be the one to travel too for those ice sculpture. Always spectacular.
Biodun:
The dreaded jet lag, understandable, hope your trip is pleasurable.
Petit déjeuner is a breakfast. I’m pretty certain you get the rest.
Well, time for bed, have a good night pups.
which is different from le petite mort.
Whatever makes you happy I guess Mary.
I wish I could be there. wwwwwaaaaaaa.
Just a tad…! ;-)
Are you sure this is an appropriate topic for this thread? (Old FDL joke based on events that transpired…)
g’nite q – are you going to grace us with a dive on your way out?
Bonne Nuit, Ma Cheri!
i knowthis..i have a French passport…LOL! in addition to my US ones…you think the arrogant French give me a passport if I didn’t speak understandable French? Just ask any Magreb Arab straight outta the Casbah in North Africa, where they speak mostly Arabic and very very bad mangled French
What knd of fuckery is this?!!
anything goes on this late late night thread==as long as you don’t insult and you don’t threaten someone with violence…have you read the late late threads when Trex was here?
Of which, most are walled off essentially from the rest of French society…! Like the Turks in Germany!
Totally smitten!
exactly…my sentiments precisely..you beat ne to it and said what needed to be said …*g*…
Biodun~ The Israelis (including their defense Minister) have been talking about razing, making a hell-hole, etc. out of Gaza for about a week now. The references to undertaking a shoah, a holocaust, is part-and-parcel of these threats. It’s a bit foreboding, because the Israeli’s have never allowed the use of that term except to the Hitlerian acts against European Jews.
Is the IDF trying to use reverse psychology here? Are they “threatening” a shoah to make the Israeli people reflect on the consequences of actually going ahead with this? It seems really odd for them to use a word that carries such negative connotations to them.
It would be like someone in the US saying “We’ll Pearl Harbor them”.
Valley Girl is our Moderator Emeritus – she was a mod here long before Trex was front paging.
Biodun, I believe VG predates TRex…! Does she know TRex…? ;-)
Suzanne? Is that you hiding behind another ID?
I know that station. It’s 10th Arond–and the other too.
Hot!
LOL!
hey NPB
FM, Biodun, my “FDL age” is showing. Long time ago Pach put up a post about gaydar at Late Nite. And, comments ensued. And one commenter said “I don’t think this is an appropriate topic for this thread”. I think he really meant “I don’t think this is an appropriate topic for FDL”. But the phrase was the subject of a lot of hilarity, back then. Way back then. As in, uh, what are appropriate topics for LN threads. As I said, my FDL age is showing. ;)
I remember the “inappropriate topic” thread and that particular commentor didn’t stick around for long and maybe never came back! He was roundly swatted!!!
Smoke
The phone rang.
It was the vet’s office.
We still have your kitty in the freezer.
I had been out of town and
a friend took the animal in
to be
done
in.
The cat had purred all the way to death.
Sick as she was
she was still purring.
Always had been an obliviously stupid feline.
I pictured her curled up
in her deep freeze sleep.
A mere sting.
A small irritation.
Slipped through her soul
the needle had stopped her cold.
Inoculated against life she moved into the next story,
the next poem.
The next day
the phone rang,
We still have your husband’s ashes here.
I had body parts all over town.
I couldn’t picture ashes.
I couldn’t picture my husband.
But I could smell the smoke.
Pets are better remembered than mates.
I know this cause my lover talks often
of his dead dog but not of his ex wife.
What we leave. . . . . .
What we leave trails thinly . . . . . . .
What we leave trails thinly after us . . . . . . .like smoke.
Was that commenter the original Concern Troll?
CT, I do indeed predate TRex. I remember when he first appeared in FDL comments, and introduced the idea of “Trexing”.
twas a forking hoot felix. a running joke has now lasted for several years.

Bad snark. Sorry.
I caught Dr.(pause)Dick one night when he first appeared. He thought I was being serious!
garedu nord is where you take the eurostar to london… gare de l’est is where you train to germany andpossibly link to the orient express……gare de lyons to Rome and beyond
That is a sad tale, indeed, Mary! Nice portrayal…
I don’t think so. Iirc he only made that one comment and fled after being pummeled(figuratively).
It is old but applies.
FM- glad you remember also! It really was one of those “moments” in FDL history. ;)
I only see him in Trex’s treehouse, like persiflage too… 8-(
don’t joke about this one–i took the guy to court–happened during Web 1.0- (200-2001)-making me the original sockpoppet–thhe guy learrned his lesson in US District court…
read all about it here..from Google..
lotsa fond memories of the good ole days – back when 100 comments on a thread was h-u-g-e
And Burns.
True…!
biodun, are you saying you are going to sue newton for making a joke about you talking as if you were the one running this thread?
actually that’s not even close to strong enough.
the use of Shoah might have been meaningful if it were used against a militaristic/fascist threat. Jacopo Timmerman raised hackles in Israel when he compared what Israel did in Lebanon to Nazi tactics. As a Jew he had been imprisoned and tortured in Argentina. he won the Nobel Peace Prize. when he went to Israel he had the audacity to challenge the excessive use of force by the Israeli military with the blessing of Arael Sharon
When I was there I stayed in a fairly crummy hotel in Montmare. I got there very excited to be there and hadn’t a clue where I was. I had maps and books but I wasn’t oriented never having been there. I used a boat to cross the channel and it took all night and there was no place to sleep and it was damn cold all over the boat and I hadn’t anything like a jaket. So I was tired by the time I got to Paris, and then I walked around most of the night and early morning because I was seeing things I’d only seen in pictures.
I didn’t get much sleep the whole time I was there and I tried to explore as much as I could. The next time I go, like most cities I visited, I’ll be a lot better oriented.
I imagine you’ve been there a lot. Did you hit any jazz clubs in the Latin Quarter?
You also speak French and I didn’t. A lot of Parisians I found–the men but not so much the women really hate American men particularly ones that don’t speak French.
I have been here from the very, very beginning. Well, like the second week.
Loo Hoo & CT you are correct. Loo Hoo I got a kick out your “cousin Bill” dancing story.
Does anyone remember when the number of comments on Late Nite reached the point where it was necessary to start a new thread, and thus Late Late Nite was born?
I day tripped to some French villages and the people in the villages seem more friendly than some of the French males towards Americans. It wasn’t everyone I met, but there were some that just weren’t going to be friendly or give you any help at all. One was the prick in the post office when I tried to mail some stuff home.
i remember it being 100
and now Attaturk for those of us that can’t tolerate sunlight!
sorry, neuro, i gave ya a bogus answer. iirc, late late nite was born when we were getting that black box showing up when the comments were into the 200’s.
mary,
just when was that? i started showing up in August of ‘05 …..
Hmmm.
Maybe if my ex had been as glad
to see me come home as my cat was,
I’d feel different.
My cat never told me,
“Bob, I think I need a little more space.”
My cat never asked for a divorce.
But then, come to think about it,
when my cat Squeaky got too old,
I stopped letting him go outside.
I never tried that with my ex!

When my wife and I went to Paris a few years ago, we were bumbling American tourists who spoke virtually no french and feared we would be viewed as the Ugly Americans. We had heard tales of Americans who wore Canadian flags so the French would, it was hoped, treat us better. (this was 2005, after the Iraq war had begun, freedom fries and all that nonsense). As it turned out, we were made to feel welcome and enjoyed very much all of our contacts with the French people. We hope to go again some day, and to go to the trouble to learn a little more french so we can show a little more respect to our hosts and maybe meet them halfway. But we had nothing to regret how we were treated on our first trip.
I’m glad the infamous wheel of doom is long gone…! ;-)
And madmommy…
No. More. Zigs.
I am really bad with dates but I remember finding out about Jane on Huffpo and following her to FDL when it started.
And no more Zeds.
Zed is dead.
I was fond of zigs.
no more busted margins…
I think that is a classic…”the gift that keeps on giving…guilt” Remind me of the Guy de Maupassant’s story The Pearl Necklace. She borrowed a necklace from a wealthy fiend for a fancy ball which she lost and spent the rest of her life saving dor a string of pearls…upon returning it her fiend told her the necklace was an imitation. Our course Suzzanne knows a guilt trip from endless guilt so does kiddo and lahoma…who have had a lovely evening with Dorothy in Kansas somewhere between the Red River and the Cimmarron…spacing
I did enjoy the zigs from time to time… tw3k created some masterpieces…!
Not me. Maybe you’re thinking of lolo, whom I miss too.
i think it was patrick 4/4 who holds the record for most zigs
Heh, dream on! Zed is not dead!

can anybody help us out here? any institutional memory on board?
I thought it was you who went to H.S. with Bill Walton. My bad.
spew…..
Ask the FISA people. They know.
you mean FISA or NSA?
Heh, RBG can pinpoint your first comment, I seem to recall him nailing me once upon a time…! ;-)
NSA
Might not have been a good idea, Bob! Are you remarried?
some of those first comments are back in the haloscan days…. and those are forking hard to search through from what i remember ct :(
Or any time I get the chance…! *g*
or whatever acronymed suits are eavesdropping and up to little good …..
let’s all wave to the nice NSA monitor who is enjoying the cartoon tonight
When I was in Paris for a few weeks, decades ago, I stayed in the Hotel Bonaparte to be near the Louvre. I ate at a neighborhood creperie serviced by one young woman who was cook, cashier, waitress, bottle-washer and bus boy all at once. That is, she RAN the place all by herself. I have never in my life seen anyone remove a cork from a bottle with a corkscrew more quickly and effortlessly than she did (5 seconds, tops). And her sense of timing in everything she did was exquisite.
My French was not too good, but at least once on the street I was asked directions, as if I knew something.
Bob in HI
Portrait of a Lady Henry James a fine historical novel…an adventure of a young NY woman travel to England…meet a series of eligibles…marries a Italian gent and lives the very good life. It is full bibelots and things that are found in those Northern Italian Villas. It was Enghlish lit assignment but revelealed a world apart. Might be interesting.
yep–i took that ferry as well–used to take all night just to cross that damned channel, and the hovercraft…which took an hour for the channel…now that the Brits have improved the tracks on their side (the French updated their right fomr the get-go) the trip from Paris to London–and vice-versa now takes two-and a half hours!
Capiche! When was haloscan phased out…?
I forgot about the busted margins. You would beg us not to do more than one or two links per comment! I never really understood how you could bust a margin…
I want to be there, too!
What were zigs?
People probably discovered FDL in their own ways. So, not sure institutional memory applies. I read about FDL coverage of “Plamegate” from a Jay Rosen column at PressThink. And was promptly hooked.
I’ll confess to having to ask Suzanne what a busted margin was. Never did see one.
Oh, that was me. He Bill wasn’t my cousin though. Just a classmate.
It wasn’t hard to do… As I seem to recall…! For some strange reason or other…! ;-)
actually both–NSA administers FISA…*g*
some nights it seemed like all i did was fix busted links and quotes that quoted a quote that had a link that quoted a quote that had a link
It strikes me as very ironic that DOJ is prosecuting (in LA) Anthony Pellicano, a head of a law firm, and several other people on wiretapping charges for allegedly wiretapping wives or husbands in divorce suits, but that the head of DOJ has turned his back on nailing Bush, Cheney and their many associates/agencies who have been doing massive illegal wiretapping since 2000.
Eclectic Mix to Testify at Hollywood Detective’s Trial
back in the old day, when you replied to a comment, the comment itself was brought down into the submit comment box and included any comments that it was in reply to. it became a series of nested quotes
if there was a link inside of one the inner quotes, the link would bleed outside the margin to the right.
busted margin
“Might not have been a good idea, Bob!” — I knew better than to try!
“Are you remarried?” — Not yet, but I’m anxiously courting a most excellent prospect. Amazingly enough, she seems to like me!

i am glad i was not the only one to make that connection. isn’t it ironic…
But, Bush and Cheney were doing it on government business to pertekt the ‘merican peeple. And, besides, they are Republicans.
A very, very distant cousin of mine. 4 brothers came over from England in the 1670’s and proliferated from PA.
Those are the keepers, Bob! Sounds kewl, bra! *g*
It’s hard to remember. The first I remember ever commenting was during the Tommy Yum “Have You Had Enough” era during the spring/summer. Was that before the ‘06 election? Not the ‘04…
Mary must have been here long before me. There was already a culture in place that I really liked when I arrived. It was before Teddy was a front pager.
that ladies and gentlemen, is a zig magnificent!
Was that the hovercraft to Hook-von-Holland? I took that one. The English Channel is not a placid sea. Fortunately, I had a bit better time of it than Peter did. I wish we had the hovercraft here instead of our (not so) super-ferry, which is not friendly to whales and other sea life.

That one Rawked! Suz, didn’t know what to do…! It was awesome…! *g*
zigs = ziggurats = FDL term coined by Punaise to describe the appearance of nested comments in FDL comments. Way back when.
Hey! They’re having a good ‘ol time. Imagine the poor NSA employees who have to follow LGF or Drudge.

In my “lame” defense, I edited it within seconds. I forget who preserved it, but I’m in their debt.
Good night everyone. Have fun tomorrow!!!!!
bob,
i’ve had a wide variety of experiences as regards French hospitality (esp. toward Americans) and i speak only a few phrases of french and understand just a little. two examples: about fifteen years ago my (then)wife and i went to Paris. a Parisienne i know is a travel agent. she fixed us up with a hotel and took us there. we checked in and went on our way, being touristy. at the end of the second day the desk clerk accused me of complaining to the management. i had done no such thing. i wouldn’t have known who to complain to for one thing and the other was that i wasn’t unhappy with the service! i later realized that my Parisienne friend had complained about the desk clerk but she hadn’t told me that she had. she considered him insufficiently polite (and i didn’t know any better).
last May i was in Normany. Americans are, generally, very popular there. one night, in a museum i was asked by a French woman of a certain age if i was from Scandanavia. i told her, no, i’m an American, and without a pause she embraced me and kissed me! i must say i rather like the French …..
Congratulations to you both!
Aloha, Mary!
g’nite mary mc – hope you feel better soon
I have to bring up a favorite book:
“Our Hearts Were Young and Gay,” by Cornelia Otis Skinner. I read it in junior high school and laughed till I cried.
That is a real contradiction, huh?
oh if talking about favorite books, The Stand by Stephen King would be on my desert island list.
I seem to recall Suz sputtering in ordering us to refresh the page…! *g*

let’s just say that ya’ll kept me on my toes
Are you really, really tall, Felix?! Redhead??
that’s not really what I said now is it? I studied semiotics and deconstruction in grad school, so I’ve had lotsa professional practice unpacking words and what they might–or might not–connote…
the other common problem back in the old days was an open tag so everything below that comment would be either italicized, bolded, or a huge forking link.
as RBG pointed out the other nite, i learned html fixing all the code back in the day
A bit of synchronicity, eh?
I’ve been dipping a toe in now and then. I’ve been working very hard for a while and, for some reason, my family likes to talk to me when I’m home.
When did Jane start FDL, VG? (Avos are ready!)
Nothing better to do…! 8-P
I shall bid ya’ll another fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!

My Bad… *poof*
yeah, i think i found FDL over Plamegate, but i don’t remember just when or what brought it to my attention. i do remember that Jane and “Redd” were pretty much the ONLY posters at the time, and Jane was living on the Oregon coast. we had talked about meeting up but before we did her mom got sick and she pretty much left the state (i was in the Willamette Valley at the time).
no to both, but I do have a 1st cousin tall w/red hair. His known as “Rusty”. Duh!
That’s sweet. You just happened to peek in tonight. Wow!
that would’ve been ‘06. the song was integral to the campaign for progressive people (Lamont, etc.)…
Night, CTuttle. Aloha!
i remember starting to read the lake back when jane was cut and pasting emails from a lawyer who later became known to us all as CHS.
“Congratulations to you both!”
Thanks–
Are you the one who was offering me advice when I opined that I might have a closet feminist on my hands? If so, not to worry. If she meets my brother’s wives, and my Mother, I won’t have to say a thing. She will have all the “permission” she needs to blossom in whatever way she feels drawn to. No shrinking violets in my family.

Wow. I’d never seen the Wiki on FDL. Interesting.
it’s the only way ….. especially on sunday. i expect i won’t be there more than 3 or four hours ….

Wow! So Christy was reading FDL and emailing Jane with goodies? Really cool.
“and oh, I have a prospect…”
Congrats, Biodun! Have you popped the Q yet?
I haven’t yet, officially, but I’ve been dropping hints as thick as a snowstorm in Wisconsin.
Bob in HI
yeap, I read for about 4 months and finally got up the nerve to delurk and asked a question. Mrs. K8 was so welcoming and gracious to me and my obviously newbieness. I’ve tried to play that forward with every new delurker i’ve run into here since then.
To put aside one FDL historical controversy…
The zed is dead. There is no zed.
Wordpress used to label the first comment on a thread as comment “0,” but that would flash only for an instant, and then become comment “1.”
Somebody around here got the idea that “zed” meant “zero,” and started calling the first comment in a thread the zed.
Actually, “zed” means “z.” And the current architecture of FDL no longer produces “zero” comments. So it never made sense to call it the “zed,” and now it makes even less sense.
The zed is dead. There is no zed. There never was.

Good night, all.
How long have you been divorced (I’m assuming) Biodun? Did you just meet this
little tartwoman on your trip? JK!g’nite neuro
Good night!
g’nite neuro
wishing you sweet dreams of the eteranl zed ;)
kirk, whacha bringing to the meetup?
Great cartoon Suzanne! I haven’t seen that in years.
and, and, isn’t Fire Dog Lake now a popular mainstream blog, according to a UN Dispatch’s mostly positive review of yours truly?
(really couldn’t resist that one, I’m sorry…and very much on topic of FDL’s history–well, it’s living history, as one might put it.)
From UN Dispatch…:
I’ve noticed that you really bring out the welcome wagon, and I think we all follow your example. It’s nice to have new people to interact with. Especially since we miss some of our “on vacation” friends.
I still can’t believe Patrick4/4 showed up so magically tonight!
thanks, busted. tis a classic for sure – unfortunately, i jumped the gun a wee bit on when i thought that which can not be mentioned can be mentioned again.
there is an ebb and flow to the commenters here. people come and go and that is part of the appeal to me.
Here’s a good one. An old black and white Merry Melodie on YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
ohmystars.. i’ve not seen that one.
In a word, no. But I will tonight–at dinner somewhere in the Latin Quarter while eating couscous and drinking fine red wine. As I mentioned earlier, Paris is the City of Lights–and of Love!
from Rimbaud: le printemps…de mois de l’espere et de l’amour…
(spring…months of hope…and of love…)
I’m late gettin’ here, I went and lost my homesick ass playing p0ker today and didn’t get home till late and then I couldn’t get on the toobz. Teh damn Google kept giving me a 403 message saying my attempts look like an automatic
generated wackadoodle something or other , looks like a spyware message.
I had to down load their recommended spyware remover/ registry cleaner.
That fixed 20 problems with the free version, it found 197 problems so I had to buy the fuckin’ thing and have spent the last hour and a half installing it and running it and I just ain’t a real happy camper right now.
and you missed unka sherman’s return of the dirty boogie too busted. wanna cup of hot chocolate with mini marshmallows to warm up your inner camper with?
send it back and get your money returned and then download-Spybot Search&Destroy and CCcleaner free. Never ever pay for that kind of software.
I am a huge Merrie Melodies fan.
That makes sense. Good night, neurophius!
–14 years…
–yes, yesterday at De Gaulle at the boulangerie, where I had gone to pick up some baguettes for Genevieve…Assia just landed from NYC; we started talking; she told me she was a novelist, then asked me what I did for a living. I simply gave her my card and told her to Google me (you know the part that says Google is your resume/CV?) and and the rest is history–
i once got confused and mistook search and destroy for the spybot search and destroy – the first costs. i run my spybot regularly.
I had spybot, couldn’t find it.
Can’t return something you download over the internet.
Besides, I got another program too and it cleaned up the memory and I have double what I had before I started.
Bummer. And it would have been so much more palatable if you had a pocket full of greenbacks…
OMG! Are you getting married there? If not, how about Austin during Netroots Nation??? We could all be there for the wedding!!! THAT WOULD BE A FIRST, BIODUN!
It comes and goes 8)
Last week I split a Championship tournament pot at my local Eagles club.
That was a nice chunk of change.
All of my security/clean-up software is freeware and I never have any problems. Antivirus and firewall too.
When I got the new machine last year I almost fell for that Spybot/S&D difference also.
felix, do those work for the mac os?
you have a mac kirk?
Wow!
You have been here a long time, here I thought I was an old timer around here!
The Boss man freaked me out one time and sent me a link to my very first comment here, I wanna say March of 05.
I’m not sure Doc. Let me check. Be right back…
Don’t need them for a Mac, Kirk. I promise.
Grab a fresh nightly build kirk :D
Before switching to linux I’d download a fresh build every time I restarted the browser which was typically whenever i’d reboot.
Once in a blue moon it would be a bad build. I just kept the older copy around until i tried out the new build and if the build was good I’d delete the old build.
floppymoose is handy too.
This is all more just for fun than haveing anything to do with spyware.
I can now hear the bell-tolls of Saint-Vincent de Paul (which you can see from Genevieve’s penthouse)…started tolling at 10 AM Paris time…still a little overcast, sun looks ready to come out–gotta put my boots on and take that walk to Gare du Nord for the eros…*g* (I’m sure some FDLers would be glad to see me begone from this thread…*g*
Bell just stopped, BTW, in case anyone is interested. *G* for his one…*g*
…euros…
doesn’t look as if they do. trust newtonusr, i don’t know anything about mac’s and very little about windows!
do you sleep dood? (laughing)
Here’s the stupidest article I read from the WaPo in a long time.
*g
sleep???
i know nothing about macs but after hearing newton go on and on about em, i’m thinking a very weak maybe for my next new one.
Just home from work. Wow! 308 comments at late late night at fdl, and nothing spectacularly weird happened Saturday.
hey ET
what that in the 50s living column? lol
mac users are quite strident aren’t they?
You’re right. I’m a broken record about the Mac. :-)
If there is a bot, you will hear about it here, and fast.
OMG. We’ve lost Biodun. He’s completely flipped. What did they call it in the Disney movie of Bambi? Flipperated? He’s gonecity.
well, you just know, anybody named newtonusr would be a mac monster ;)
Sorry, I forgot to link that miserable article.
Afraid so.
wow – thank you Felix, newtonusr, and tw3k. y’all rawk.
and suz fwiw – using a mac sure seems easier than the windows computers i’ve had to use at work.
…loohoo…wtf? is that a WaPo leap day parody? so weird…..
We won another one, pups!
Starts as a Clinton bash and deteriorates from there.
Biodun is Twickerpated!
Wow! Alaska isn’t Blue yet, but there’s a whole lot of movement.
Congrats ET!
did anyone observe the threads at TBoog’s old place when he was laptop shopping for the Lovely&talented Casey’s college escapades. Whew!!! knock down drag-out mac/windows wars. it was brutal!
the forking papers wants me to register to see the article
I never had a newton :’(
But i will admit additively reading MacOSRumors for any developing stories about MacTable :)
you’ll find out why when you read the thread; of course I personally know of at least one comment (at 12:30 PM FDL) that’s been deleted. The person who deleted it told me that, and said we’ll pick it up later when h/she’s gotten some sleep; I said by all means yes, let’s pick up later ‘coz I sure ain’t gonna let this one go till it’s resolved…
BTW, I have screen shot of that deleted comment–which, in case anyone was wondering, is mine…the comment stood there for ’bout a minute, then disappeared. And no, it wasn’t an offending or untoward comment. I was simply asking (the wrong perhaps) questions…
lol, sounds like which is the better editor emacs or vi?
Wowie! I’m starting to think that Bob Hamilton might be able to beat Issa! I’m on his campaign committee so maybe I’m dreaming, but 2008 is just plain different.
I love the rumor sites. And never, ever, take them to the bank…
fingers and toes crossed
Great news, ET – congrats on the win!
yup :) I used to read it much more, especially while rhapsody was being developed.
i don’t know from editors but it had all the usual arguments and then some. i just surf the net.
There was one called “Pink.” Remember that one?
Oh man! That would be great! :D
No! Was it a neXt derivative?
Read here…
lol, sounds like a hillary/obama pie fight ;)
When I first switched from mac to linux i used emacs. Now-a-days I use vi.
Why?
We’ve been trying to wrest control of our local electrical co-op, which serves an area the size of New England, from a GOP-led bunch of creeps who seem to model themselves after the worst days of Brezhnev’s administration. We did that today.
I’ve been blogging about today’s election since early November. We’ve been making insurgent signs in my shop all fall and winter. I’m really, really happy now.
Progressives, liberals and moderates have had a remarkable string of victories over the past 15 months in one of the reddest parts of the USA.
Two balls, nobody on
;>)
hey DB
snoopy dance – woohoo!!!
I’m trying so hard. But it’s difficult. For instance several people on the committee want to introduce Bob in the press release as a Conservative Democrat or an Independent Democrat. I’m saying how about calling him a Proud Democrat, which he is?!??
If your DNA has been in USA since 1670 you must know something good grief charley brown
Hi S…Bugs Bunny For President.
;>)
Reality-based American…
Whoo HOO! I hope everyone there appreciates your work as much as we do, ET.
Ha ha!! Where the hell have you been?
Neat! I wonder what the gui looked like.
It is just a simple editor for the most part. lighter than emacs and suits my simple needs for a cli editor.
I don’t recall seeing grabs. It never saw the light of day as far as I know.
Great news ET! Glad to hear it :D
I made a speech at the annual co-op meeting this afternoon at which our votes were counted. A few years back, some radical wingnuts got a change in the bylaws passed so that any new director elected to the co-op has to have a hair sample taken and submitted for drug analysis. No other electrical co-op in the country requires that.
I asked for a show of hands for people- there qwere about 1,500 people there – who thought this is a good idea. Nobody raised a hand. I then asked for a show of hands from people who thought it was the dumbest idea in the world. People got up, waving their voting cards and laughing.
The guy who thought that up is probably now looking for another job….
I shifted the opposite direction for compatibility with the other GNU tools, e.g., bash uses the same keybinding for editing commands.
Most sysadmins prefer vi bacause it’s sure to be present on each and every version of Unix or Unis-derivative.
would have been interesting since it was in conjunction with IMB. Probably would have run on pc hardware, i guess.
Working door to door…You?
;>)
Gasse and Amelio would have done anything to have help with their “chestnuts.” IBM looked ok for about 15 minutes.
Eh Eh Eh Eh Eh…what’s up Doc…Eh Eh Eh Eh Eh Azyone seen that cwazy wabbit around???
Good for you. We need to call out stupidity whenever and wherever it is warranted.
A freaking hair sample! OMG!
Holy Cow!! I’ve been gabbing with you folks and in the past hour the temp here has dropped 20 degrees and it’s snowing. The weather is not unusual for SW CO but the rapid temp drop was weird.
How about a “Proud Democratic Candidate” :)
Does he lean towards being a blue-dog?
good for you ET
Now you’ll have to spell this one out for me. Carefully. Methodically. Pellucidly. Iterate. Adumbrate. and please, use words that are extant. And yes, you’re permitted to use inter alia only once. It’s in the Oxford Dictionary. Also in Larousse–as in the standard French Dictionary–not Alta Vista or any of those shitty translation machines on all youse bookmarks.
Loo Hoo: You’re right about one thing: I’ve flipped since I been in Paris: Comme on dit, ce type est flippe, si on peut employe un mot auquelle la saison est passee…
Suzanne: Please translate: I know you know French, and I know you know that I know you know French…
EWWW! I did see you on another site yesterday. Can’t remember where. Downwithtyranny?
‘My name is Mishew Mawkin, miwyunaiwe, I own a hambuwger and a cat…’
;>)
well, you out geeked me on that one, lol :)
Something to do with BeOS?
Maybe. But it’s not one of those “proud, Full-on geeky” moments.
Just useless crap floating around the brain, soon to be replaced by a new password or a pasta recipe.
No. It’s just been so gerrymandered that the Democrats on his committee are worried that he won’t win unless he can get republican votes, which is true all across America. The demographic has changed in the district, and if we can bring in the youngsters, there is a good chance he can take Issa down. Hard to compete with $8 million bucks, though.
very cool wigwam. GNU tool compatibility was among the first reasons I went with emacs that and at the time i was more comfortable with a gui.
Later availability was a prime motivator to get acquainted with vi.
Hard to believe such a beautiful woman can open her mouth and turn so ugly, huh?
I’m thinking a “Biodun’s Twickerpater” banner hung up in his favorite Dinkytown coffee shop before he returns to the twintowns. Phoenix Woman probably knows which one it is. :)
lol :)
FORK, its after 2 in the forking morning. yikes, i gotta clean and get to bed – i got pups coming tomorrow!
g’nite all and thanks for hanging with me tonight
Twickerpated.
nite suzanne
That would be so fun, Felix!!
Good night Suz! Thanks for being such a great host.
nite Suzanne. Have fun later today:)
I think it’s twitterpated. Good night everyone.
I shifted to Linux and emacs 14 years ago, and remember almost nothing of vi. I wonder if it’s like riding a bicycle, i.e., whether my fingers would remember it rather quickly.
Hard to say…I’m a ramblin’ guy. And it’s never hard to believe such a thing.
;>)
Night, s.
Don’t look now Elmer deadeye… it’s a cwazy kwute lil gurlly wabbitt eh eh eh eh
nigt Loo Hoo!
nite loo hoo
The art Darkblack has created for me about our incredible GOP idiots up in Alaska has won raves from my friends, glares from my enemies.
I bet it is. I’ve been thinking use xemacs again. That whole split between emacs and xemacs really kinda confuses me.
I looked at Xemacs something like eight years ago, and decided there would be better karma with standard emacs. Somehow I seem to recall that the two were talking of merging some time in the dim distant past. I take it that never happened.
heh, the flaming pig! I like the lolcat one too as well as the insurgent art. particularly the know coal one :)
anyone like mac leopard
that Darkblack fella needs to be a protected species.

U.S. Plan Widens Role in Training Pakistani Forces
By ERIC SCHMITT and THOM SHANKER
A plan would send U.S. trainers to work with a paramilitary force that is the vanguard in the fight against Al Qaeda.
Bummer from Bushco
Mornin’, bigbrother -
Was beginning to think everyone had gone to snoozeland.
What a lovely late night thread with lots of memories, many of which I have and raising a question as to when I first came on board. Tried the search thingie but it only seems to work when one’s name shows up in an actual post (like a h/t). Is that piece of knowledge something we can find out for ourselves or does it have to be done by a mod? Do know I lurked for donkey’s ears before taking the thread plunge altho’ this is a place that has always felt like home.
may 07 sound right?
I tried the site search feature but it doesn’t work to well for that does it.
Good Morning all. The comments were fun to read. Anyone else miss egregious in the a.m.?
Morning! yes :)
Oh, lor’, years before that! *g* Apparently the search thing only works for what’s actually in the post – but not the thread comments. There *must* be some way of finding out b/c somebody in the background has mentioned a time frame to specific commenters on several occasions.
JPL9 -
It’s always like a piece of sunshine is missing when eg isn’t here. What have you seen from her recently about how she’s adapting to the west coast?
Tuesday is “nail biting day” according to the BBC online. Jane’s post yesterday showing an Obama video elicited lots of comments and snide remarks among posters. Hopefully it doesn’t get worse.
Me, I’m old school and I prefer Craftsman.
(If needed see janes second comment in the afore-mentioned thread)
Mack, you’re real old school. How are you feeling?
is that in the NYT?
It’s interesting because I have strong Outcomes aBout tuesdAys vote and i hope that My cAndidate wins but some comments were way overboard in discussing children.
lol, gee, i wonder which candidate :)
morning!
JPL9 – i do miss egregious.
tw3k – just stopping by while i’m trying to decide if i’m going to make a repeat of last weekend’s whole wheat chocolate chip pancakes or if i’m gonna try some oatmeal pancakes. hmmmm… decisions, decisions….
Selise, Enjoy your pancakes, my grapefruit and toast pale in comparison. Where’s Marion?
selise! lol, don’t even start talking about pancakes or I’m going to get hungry :)
it’s all tw3k’s fault!
… ok, off to make some coffee. later pups!
It’s time for me to get dressed and go out for the Sunday’s NYTimes. It’s crossword puzzle morning for me..
Can we talk about bacon?
I smell bacon cooking…
lol :)
I’m still working on coffee but my mind is starting to turn towards food.
*shakes fist*
howdy egr! was just thinking that i was missing you in the mornings…
good morning everyone. i think bacon is just wonderful.
Hey selise! Miss you too…
Guess my ears were burning. Or was that the bacon.
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo, Kristof and Rich in the NYT. MoDo says Hillary Clinton keeps trying to dismiss Barack Obama’s appeal as emotional. But behind that ethereal presence he’s a wonky lawyer, just like Hillary. Mr. Kristof says unless a major international effort is mounted to avert it, a new conflict in southern Sudan will probably resemble Darfur but be carried out on a much wider scale. Mr. Rich says McCain is channeling his inner Hillary, and whatever John McCain’s sporadic overlap with liberals, he is emulating almost identically the suicidal Clinton campaign against Barack Obama.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I was in the mood for something a little out of the ordinary so I’ve got French toast waffles. Have a wonderful day.
