Hillary Clinton's campaign released a new campaign ad in Texas [h/t TPM] designed, I assume, to contrast her leadership qualities with those of (I assume) Senator Obama (or perhaps McCain). From
ABC news:
Closing in on the March 4 contests, Sen. Hillary Clinton debuts a campaign ad today with ominous undertones.
"It's 3:00am and your children are asleep," the voice over says. "There's a phone in the White House, and it's ringing. Something is happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call."
"Whether someone knows the world's leaders, knows the military, someone tested and ready to lead. It's 3am and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?"
The tone of the ad -- which echoes the infamous Daisy Ad from the 1964 Johnson-Goldwater presidential race and the red phone ad former Vice President Walter Mondale ran against Gary Hart in their '84 race for the Democratic nomination -- indicates that the Clinton campaign is pulling out the all the stops leading into the Ohio and Texas primaries.
Within hours after Clinton's campaign released its "3:00 a.m. phone call" ad, Barack Obama's campaign released a statement (h/t Greg Sargent at TPM), the money quote from which was:
"This is about what you say when you answer that phone. What judgment you show...She, John McCain and George Bush gave the wrong answer."
. . . and then within a few more hours, Obama released the following counter ad:
And the winner is . . .?
I've been dreading what is likely to come from the Republican smear machine. But now I'm starting to look forward to this campaign.

I’m loving Obama’s comebacks. That’s all I’m going to say. ;-)
By the way, is it true John McCrazy picked Elizabeth Dole as his VP? Oh boy.
No question. Barack. Great turn-around.
I believe the Lizzy Dole announcement was in the same Drudge leak that McCain won the November elections.
The best part is Mark Penn’s hilarious response:
If the ad wasn’t meant to be negative, why is it three o’clock in the morning with children in their beds? Why not during the day with a phone ringing in the Oval Office?
Waaaahhhhh…I can’t get the Obama one to work…Waaaahhhhh
Hillary will scream “Plagiarism!”
caw caw…
Hello from Paris, France, trying to come up to speed after jetlag and other things…
I’m totally impressed with Obama’s organization. He’s got some real hotshots working for him! I’m lovin’ it.
I suppose hillary is a gonner unless she is able to deliver a knock out blow
the problem with “a knock out blow” is it will weaken her chances in the general.
if a “knock out blow” is to come, it cannot seem as though it came from her campaign
LOL Wow. They’re killing two birds with one stone now, I see.
You’re in Paris? We feel so sorry for you, poor guy.
Ooooo…lucky you!
I have to admit that I don’t understand why she put out this type of ad. I’m tired of the fear tactics under shrub and company. Is it wrong to expect better from my own party?
I’ll see if I can find a different link. The one in the post works for me.
all I could think of when I first watched Hillary’s ad was “Pick up the freakin’ phone!’
You can tell Barack has the ‘pissed off Americans’ working for him, you know, like us. I can almost hear them saying to each other as soon as McCrazy or Hillary opens up their mouths, “Oh yeah asshole! Bleep!!! Bleep! Bleeeeeep!!!!”. Can’t you see it? I know I say it a lot.
It’s 3:00 A.M and your kids are sleeping peacefully…the phone in the White House is active as the President orders the bomb, bomb, bombing of Iran and Syria….That is who I don’t want anywhere near a White House phone.
I got it to work! Thanks, I just had to refresh!
exactly — you said it. While I knew who I was backing, this ad does nothing to change my mind …
Mark Penn.
Try this link. Obama video.
CTBob,
Hope you’ll share your version of the ad here.
At 3:00am for the past eight years, George Bush was passed out.
If you insist :)

This is the police, the call is coming from an undisclosed location INSIDE the Whitehouse!……………Yeeeeaaaaaarrrrgghhhhh…
-G
Why not? - he doesn’t make the decisions anyway. Cheney would get the call, race over and push the red button.

simple answers to simple questions: NO
Somebody needs to find Mark Penn and take away his belt and shoelaces…
As long as we’re on the subject of Obama, Hillary, McStain, et. al., theres something that’s been nagging at me for a few days, since McStain’s snappy retort about Al Qaida already being in Iraq. ‘ol Bong’s grey matter just ain’t what it used to be and I seem to recollect that Al Qaida in Iraq is not necessarily affiliated with Al Qaida proper. Does anybody think Osama Bin Hidin’ has much skin in the game as concerns Iraq, or is he just kickin’ it somewhere in the hills ‘twixt Afghanistan and Pakistan, enjoying the show so to speak. Two fer the price of one… Secular (and sovereign, I might add) state thrown into chaos and the good ‘ol US of A pissing away its (our) blood and treasure playin’ whack-a-mole in a rabbit hole.
I now this is OT (kinda) and so last year, but inquiring minds (what’s left of mine anyway) want to know.
Thanks
:)
I saw that. The President is very sad you know.
-G
Mukasey is also refusing the enforce congressional subpoenas too.
The world is gone to shit.
that’s hysterical. i love it. you are quick. and, did i say, good.
They certainly know how to clean house quickly, don’t they? Except when there are felonies, obstruction of justice and war crimes involved.
He needs to be flogged with a wet noodle
refresh my memory - or maybe i never heard it - what’s this about?
You are so talented! Great work.
Oh, Jeez, Bob. that version would end the primaries.
Someone needs to ask Chuck what he thinks of his BFF now.
Seems there are a lot of disappointed folks in DC these days.
Who could have known Mukasey would be a scumbag?
-G
well she never did pick up the phone
i never saw either ad in real time - i don’t have a relationship with my tv. but i’m just back from the VERY long lines for the last day of early voting here in texas. i always early vote at the same place. i just walk in, vote and walk out. except for today, here in austin, the lines were really long and the workers said they were just like that yesterday. early voting ends in a half hour. and the workers for the first time asked me if i was going to caucus, which i am. i was probably on line for an hour. voted for barack, will caucus for barack on tuesday.
Well the story just broke today so it’s not a surprise you hadn’t heard about it. :) Early this morning, a blog exposed the Special Assistant to the President Timothy Goeglein as a plagiarizer. He admitted to it. Now he’s gone.

OT/ Tweety posing the question as to whether winning the primary between an african american and a woman depends on winning the ‘white guy’ vote.
I love Obama’s Rapid Response Team. The same news cycle they get out a response that is (1) well crafted, (2) on target, and (3) a stronger message than the original attack.
This is what we begged John Kerry to do in ’04. Obama has the election team that can bring us to victory.
They already told Pelosi no? Taylor and/or Mukasey?
hah! i was stamping my pointy toed little shoes when they were going to confirm as neutral. i trusted him as much as i trusted bush’s authorization for war in iraq. who knew he’d actually use it? ditto on mukasey. i can’t think of anything to say that expressed how mad i was about his confirmation and how mad i am now that he’s refusing to act on subpoenas.
Tweety running the Barack ad now.
Tweety is showing Obama’s response ad…!
8-P!
I was never certain Kerry was smart enough to respond this quickly. He was the essence of plodding.
Only voters in his universe.
Tweety showing his “strict constuctionist” slip?
OT: where else but here could I have a convo on a political blog with brasilians about photos from Donita’s show :)
Okay back on topic…I vote for CTBob’s ad :)
LOL!
Will be back on Tuesday…on assignment for BBC News World Service. I freelance for them…news editing, fact-checking, that sorta thing that US MSM seems to have developed amnesia about…*g*
Hi LS!!!
And as usual, the announcement comes after the news cycle on Friday night. They’re so predictable in their intellectual dishonesty and cowardice.
Last night with the smashing return of serve against McCain, tonight a brilliant turnaround of the SAME AD to hit the weak spot of both Hillary and McCain.
Why couldn’t we have had this kind of campaign in 2004?
If I only had their budget!
OK, I’ll bite: anyone who knew Bush/Cheney/Addington chose him?
Sounds like a good job. We expect there to be no factual errors left in France by Monday.
Salut, ca doit etre au milieu de la nuit la-bas.
You’re right, it has to be done. It’s exciting to see it happen.
Enjoy the pomme frites, and steer clear of the egalite frites…!
how’s it going, eg–
when is your next trip to Russia?
“I seem to recollect that Al Qaida in Iraq is not necessarily affiliated with Al Qaida proper.”
This is a red herring. The US has gone after the AlQaeda command and control hierarchy with a vengeance, which includes attacking their communication systems, financial networks, etc. So, AlQ has responded accordingly. It was always based on a network of affiliated cells anyway.
I think there has always been some debate about whether or not there ever was an “Al Qaeda proper.” Follow the money.
Remember back in the early days of the occupation of Iraq? We were flying suitcases filled with bundles of $100 bills, most of which have never been accounted for. How much you wanna bet that some of those suitcases got into hands sympathetic to AlQ? Iraq is awash in Yankee $$$, “corruption” is rampant, and the “surge” is based on paying insurgents to be nice. I’d say that right now there isn’t really an AlQ “proper”, but a bunch of semi-autonomous regional groups, heavily Arab in ethnicity and Islamic in outlook. There are no command and control links between Afghanistan and AlQ in Iraq (why do you think the standard terminology is now “Al Qaeda in Iraq” rather than just “Al Qaeda”?)
That’s the view from this corner.
Bob in HI
Conyers has released a statement:
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/180866.php
This picture about sums up this entire issue. *grin*
I pretty much 707′d when i saw it in my friend’s blog. It’s utterly priceless. XD Obama’s rapid response team ROCKS.
*Raises hand*
Oh that pic is hysterical. I have to show that to mr wobbs when he gets home
Great cartoon.
And what hypocrisy from the Clinton camp of late - to cry “shame” on Obama for purported tactics straight out of “Karl Rove’s playbook,” when this latest (last?) week of her campaign has been a barrage of Rovian/GWB tactics right out of ‘04, which, thankfully, can only win over a handful of really stupid people.
ah shit, that did make me laugh out loud.
I knew she would regret the ad when I first heard it, because I knew that my answer would be, I want the guy who showed good judgment to begin with, who said no to war in Iraq. Sure enough. Where are her handlers and what are they thinking!
oui–c’est une heures du matin Samedi…tu sais, decalage d’horaires…
I wrote the BBC recently telling them they needed someone who understood American politics. Between the different systems and the lousy quality of the MSM’s coverage, they tend to repeat the CW. They can do better and I am sure you could straighten them out.
Just had to state the obvious- what a dumb ad. The phone keeps ringing and ringing. Right. SO reassuring. The lights are on but no one’s home.
Kirk,
That question is a play on he oft repeated Bush lackey refrain.
Like Condi Rice saying “Who could have known terrrrists would fly jets into buildings?”
Or “Who could have known the levy would break?”
-G
LOL taking care of your kids is a black thing?
Tweety: self help message LOL what a dip
Ca ferait un decalage de 6 heures pour moi. Mais pour toi ca fait 9 heures de difference si je compte bien.
Hey, Biodun, came in late to the thread wherein you said you were jetlagged and about to go to bed at 10:15 or so in Paris! Sorry, but all I could think of was, “He’s in Paris, and he’s going to bed at 10:15! What a lightweight!” Hope you had a good flight and are gonna have a nice time while you’re there!
Cosbian? Whites love it? Context in a political campaign — how about it having to do with education?
Taking personal responsibility is bourgeois? what an ass! I’m glad this woman is calling him on the carpet
Go Katrina, schooling Tweety.
I forget that there are plenty of drunks on hand to help Georgie in the middle of the night. ;-)
She was making too much sense and that’s why Tweety was having a hard time. He’s used to spinning everything.
What are you doing in Paris? Not that I’m envious…
Hi Bioduuuun!!!
But of course Tweety can’t have someone making him look like a jackass even though he does it to himself every evening
Hey, Pher. Hope all’s well.
Thanks GregB - i just couldn’t help the mental venn diagrams….hope i din’t seem unhappy with the wordplay…
Brooks continues the meme on the NewsHour that support for Obama is soft. The increasingly idiotic Shields pipes up with and says he needs to enter into public financing like he promised (only Obama didn’t). The Serious People do loves themselves some McCain.
I just couldn’t watch tonight.
Tweety just makes shit up as he goes along.
He’s not one for rational argument if it can’t be translated into a sophomoric platitude, bad analogy, or tingly feeling up his leg.
Will i am has a new piece that is so powerful. I just tried to post the link but I cant make it work.
Good one! Why am I only the ninth one to rate it?? Come on, pups!
I have to say I adore our newest AG.
AP - Attorney General Michael Mukasey refused Friday to refer the House’s contempt citations against two of President Bush’s top aides to a federal grand jury. Mukasey said White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former presidential counsel Harriet Miers committed no crime.
AG, Judge AND Jury
;(
Exactly. I “love” how every time he makes a comment that is favorable to conservatives/neocons/America-haters he looks to the side as if the GOP is sitting on his shoulder as a satanic angel. He’s definitely an odd duck that ole Tweety.
Conservatives are the only ones who take care of their kids? More spin from the Tweety…
http://www.dipdive.com/ is the link
I did ask Feinstein, but she ignored me.
And big dog Bill is running all around today telling us Texas is a must win for Obama.
Yep, in Tweety’s world, anything that shows any inclination to personal responsibility is conservative; anything that indicates a smaller government is conservative. This regardless that the Rethugs have actually expanded the size and certainly the expense of the government. You would think someone would be concerned about the costs, but no, only Dems expand government and spend money wildly, showing no sense of responsibility at all.
Tonight’s humor brought to you by CTBob.
Croissants and frites provided by Biodun.
merci bien Ann–pour les sentiments…tu me manquee aussi…a bientot–je suis la jusqu’a Mardi prochain…
je t’aime bien…
Thank you
Has everyone seen this?
They are showing the last debate again? huh? Where is KO?
Well on CSPAN-2 is the State of the Black Union. I’ll watch for Dick gregory :)
No Countdown tonight? They’re replaying that boring, yukky debate again? Oh, well, guess I get to watch Monk!
frites de la liberte, egalite, et fraternite…
Welcome…
a friend sent it to me this morning
Matthews just claimed he heard a ‘dog whistle’ in this ad. I call BS!
Here’s an update on what is happening in Maine right now…
http://www.wcsh6.com/news/arti.....ryid=81781
Maybe arresting Bush & Cheney would be easier than impeaching them? Huh. Don’t know, but Dobson who is running for Sen. Susan Collins’ US Senate seat as an Independent is thinking it could be. ;-) I think I’ll sit back and watch the ole girl in action. If she succeeds she’ll get my vote in November!
I had one the worst and one of my best meals in Paris.
i guess that’d make the twit a dog.
Bicker, bicker, bicker. I love my party (The Democratic Party). Rove and McCain really like what we are doing. To ourselves. The Republicans are gathering ammunition to use against us. And the Democrats are providing that ammunition. Seemingly with gusto.
Exactly. Tweety’s irony is only lost on the neocons who sit in front of the tv, stare straight ahead, and drool down their necks. The rest of us can see it.
I’ve owned a housecleaning business for years now and I can attest that those with money aren’t always the best parents. Yes, the kids may have the best of everything, but they certainly don’t always have humor, love, caring, and compassion. I’ve been in some homes that felt like a hospital. Sad.
I want an effective government and so far…the last eight years have been DEFECTIVE (running on 3 flat tires and one missing). The party that has done this will never see a vote from me in my lifetime because of it.
Thanks for the link.
Tweety epitomizes BS
“It’s 3AM and your children are safely asleep, somewhere a phone is ringing…and the NSA wants you to pick it up!”
I just asked the other Democrat in our household what’s to be done? She said a bit tersley: “Unite”.
I know I’m in trouble, I make entirely too many VOIP calls to South America to CELL PHONES!!!!
