There are a few themes developing that should be called out now for what they are.
First, the racist junk that right-wing radio. blogs, and conservative interest groups are going to throw out. That somehow a black candidate secretly hates; whites, Jews, Christians, latinos, asians, old people, veterans, rich people, middle class people, corporations, and especially ducks.
And while this is happening, John McCain will just talk about how terrible this stuff is but he can't stop it; and the media tut tuts it 24/7. And yet FoxNews and Howie Kurtz will keep having these same people on their shows and in their columns and treat them like the respectible contributor to the public discourse they believe them to be.
Good ol' John McCain! Poor John McCain. Damn, that black guy should stop being so black*, it's not fair to John McCain.
But another insidious meme is developing. It is not that the candidate is so extreme, no it's something else. Something about as bad.
On Monday, who else but Bill Kristol started this little trick by stating this:
[Obama] wanted to explain that he was too good — too patriotic! — to wear a flag pin on his chest.
The whole column has one theme, that Barack Obama thinks he is better than you.
And then Tuesday in the Washington Post, America's "divining Rod of Wankery" Richard Cohen chimed in:
Obama is nearly as good as he thinks he is.
And now Gail Collins comes forward today and says:
...people here worry that Barack Obama is getting show-offy
I believe the word all of you are thinking, but not typing, is...
U-P-P-I-T-Y
Let's just get it out in the open and call it for the racist bullcrap it is.
Thank you.

Good Morning Attaturk
It’s actually not just a race card. Remember, Al Gore supposedly thought he was better than us, too.
Anyone that runs for this office HAS to think he or she is better than us. Christ, they teach that in high school civics!
They keep making up new code words. I’ll never keep up.
It’s ironic because Bill Kristol knowns he is better than us
I meant
Bill Kristol knows he is better than us
We need African American and Spanish Language radio to start telling their listeners what the GOP is saying. The GOP’s secret plan has always been to rally their base with hate quietly.
At least that was the plan until the last election when we got control of the House and Senate I wonder what happened to message control?
Wait now I remember “Macaca”
The GOP has keep the hate message secret so they can present its self as reasonable to suburban voters. They have to keep the hate message secret from minorities.
They blew it last time lets keep up the pressure. Racist attacks on Obama
are going to do more to get our vote out than another $50 million in TV ads.

Seems to me the implication here is that any criticism of any person of color or female `is racist and or sexist?
“By their deeds you shall know them” and what does the Bible say about trees that won’t bear fruit being set on fire?
Bush and the Neocons have never had an idea bear fruit yet!
I’ve noticed that too. It’s converging with the new line of attack, “we in the media have been unduly soft on Obama.”
Marshall has more.
And it looks like Philadelphia’s John Baer got the memo.
The racists will continue their rants unless and until the listeners and readers start hammering the advertisers. And I mean hammering. Write letters. Write little signs to tape to products in stores. Make a spectacle of yourself berating the manufacturer while in the store. Dealing directly with the likes of Rush Limpdick will get us about as far as watching paint dry.
It’s not that they’re smarter or better, they’ve had better opportunities than most is all.
Mornin’, Raven.

Was John McCrazy really born in the US?
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02.....ref=slogin
One of my blog readers and I had this conversation behind the scenes recently and I thought because McCain was born to a military couple he would be considered American, especially if born on a military base. Oh boy.
billy boy kristol needs to be laughed at whenever he opens his mouth
every single prediction he’s made has not only been wrong, it’s been brutally irresponsible causing death in the 100’s of thousands
he’s a joke and that’s the way obama should respond;
“bill krystol?…you are sighting the most inept opologist for this administration as some kind of source?
you can’t be serious, come back when you want to quote someone that has a clue”
No, it’s meant that there have been sexist attacks on Clinton.
And no, attacks on candidates are fine — but using stereotypes to attack them is wrong.
K, I think it’s a lofty goal to get people to do this but I’m all for it. Now, where is that old right wing warmongering fighter pilot!
It seems that the younger generation who go to Obama rallies is a lot less racist than my generation is. These racist attacks will turn a whole new crop of young voters away from the GOP for a generation.
The future is looking very good.
From the General: X Degrees of Tim Russert
the race card from here on end…with an Obama who wasn’t born in contiguous US…*g*
Raven–got ya in Facebook…and responded…
Kristol’s days as a commentator are numbered. He’s got to be careful, or he’ll get an invitation to appear on Oprah and do some ’splain’in. The Reactionary Right are grasping for straws from a burning haystack. Everything they pick up burns them a bit more. They bring out retread 1950s anti-commuknist screeds, and nobody knows what they are talking about, much less cares. The ‘uppity black’ meme isn’t working because of a quarter century of television and film shows depicting blacks as people in all their depth and complexity. That’s why McCain is telling the thugs to back off. He knows it’s toxic.
The rethugs are going to end up like the Royalists in France after the Orleanist Revolution of 1830. They are going to retreat to their estates and gated communities, bitch like crazy, and try to maintain their isolated social world. But they will no longer matter like they’ve mattered for the past 50 years.
That somehow a black candidate secretly hates; whites, Jews, Christians, latinos, asians, old people, veterans, rich people, middle class people, corporations, and especially ducks.
Sounds like the GOP is projecting its own values and fears on to other people again. They lack empathy and don’t want to understand others. They assume that everybody thinks the way that they do and would be like them if only we could.
Ingroupers have to think that way otherwise they can’t justify giving up their own originality to belong to their current in group.
However projecting their values on a foreign culture like Iraq and twisting the Intel to reflect their own bias might be the root cause of all their mistakes.
From one unchallenged flawed assumption grew a disaster!
Tony Powell on Imus this morning gives a smackdown to Republican racial code campaign tactics:
“Change is Comin’” and Republicans “Got to Change Your Evil Ways.”
I wonder if the GOP realizes that with Obama being “cool” that a whole generation of ingroupers who should be GOP voters will follow the herd and vote Dem?
With good government we can keep them. With a plan we can change society and create less of them in the future.
To do this we need less fear and more equally shared sacrifice.
The Mighty Starboard Wurlitzer is in a general panic.
1. Obama’s appeal to the 18-25 year old demo.
2. After cheering on The Last Dumb White President for the past 8 years, a little pigment is starting to look good to a much broader demographic.

THE Iraq war has cost the US 50-60 times more than the Bush administration predicted and was a central cause of the sub-prime banking crisis threatening the world economy, according to Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.
The former World Bank vice-president yesterday said the war had, so far, cost the US something like $US3trillion ($3.3 trillion) compared with the $US50-$US60-billion predicted in 2003.

OT
there’s a discussion now on the Supreme Court case with Exxon ON CSPAN
I’m headed for that part of the world later today. I’ll be sure to take notes…*g*
The MSM are very frightened. The status quo and their place in the political pecking order is being threatened. Make no mistake the MSM will do all in their power to insure a Republican victory in November. Print media and certainly broadcast media has been so complicit and corrupted that they have to support the status quo. The MSM has morphed into the Soviet model of journalism. Not only is is necessary to get rid of the Republicans but it’s necessary to have a paradigm shift of the MSM.
Yes that is why I keep arguing that we need Hilary to keep fighting the MSM concern trolls keep saying she should give up for the good of the party.
No they are afraid of Obama giving more victory speeches on TV and getting even more momentum.
Funny you should go back to Amos and Andy today. The racism of that era is entirely disgusting and it really does look like we’re headed right back there with the attacks the rethugs are coming up with.
I referred to Vaudeville-level comedy this morning, also, but without the racism undertones when I discussed yesterday’s White House briefing on FISA, where, I swear I am not making this up, the briefing ended with one of the press saying “We’ll cover your ass”. Click on my name for the post.
Safe journey, safe return
The owners of the MSM might prefer a republican in the WH, but they also have something else to think about, however.
Progressives, liberals, democrats, Obama-voters, and Clinton-voters are all media consumers. If there’s a big democratic wave building toward this fall, do you really think that the MSM is going to try to piss off their consumers? There’s a recession on (or coming, depending on who you believe), especially in the media — and they’re going to be fighting for eyeballs with every DFH blogger out there, to keep their income up and their jobs intact.
So, is the MSM going to count on Big (GOP) Government to bail them out and protect them, or are they going to dig in to the media marketplace and compete on the truth?
Its the Obama camapign that has begun the race-baiting. I’m sorry, but I saw it when the SC primary began and all the pundits, media and yes, Obama surrogates began spewing that Bill Clinton had made disparaging racial comments. That was a lie. The “fairly tale” stuff was about Obama’s war votes. Kennedy sited those comments specifically as Clinton race-baiting. That was a lie. The media took all this and ran with it. Obama’s campaign took it and used it to full advantage, all the while hurting our party and re-writing history just like the Republican slime machine had hoped.
Is that France or Boca Raton?
Cry havoc and let slip the dogwhistles of war . . .
sweet jesus, wasn’t this woman once the Editorial Page Editor of the NYFT ?!?!
delicious irony in that they are the Stepinfetchits, yes massa, get on it right away, show offy, got it, yes boss!
mornin’ all
Have you been following me around Wally World? I make a scene everytime I’m fucked over by these pirates. I’ll make a scene over a 5 cent discount I was shorted. In short, they can kiss my ass!!!
Bullshit, and when Fat Dog said, “hell even Jesse Jackson won this sate”. Nice try.
Erm, many blacks are indeed homophobic, but the neocon chickenhawk wankers and wankees would never call Obama on that one. After all, there’s the highly dependable gay marriage card to play in the general election in November.
la France profonde…
like clockwork
Even on fucking NPR this morning.
They play a tape of McFlake’s diatribe against Obama yesterday, but only allowed the newsreader’s summary of Obama’s retort.
Bill Clinton compared the Obama SC win to Jesse Jackson’s win.
List the things said and provide a link.
Yeah! there is no way to spin that comment as nice!
merci bien, mon ami de Irlande
March 5 will be the beginning of a brand of evil we’ve yet seen in this campaign. Brace yourselves. It will turn your stomach.
Chimpy to speak at 10 AM ET…
To beat the FISA horse?
Get out!
The ONLY way to play the story is to play both clips!!
You should be more careful of what you put in “quotes”, as in what Clinton ACTUALLY said. I agree with glenn mcgahee, the racism card was pushed by the Obama campaign surrogates. That’s kind of why Obama admitted it in a debate moderated by Russert.
Oh goody.
Wisdom from the chimp. I will be sure to start drinking early.
positive…what else? brief us about his African safari?
I don’t recall Obama admitting to pushing the racism card. Can anyone provide an exact quote from the recent debate?
I think the slurs are trying to set Obama apart from the “common man”. Everyone is free to interpret them in their own frame. For some, this chatter will be taken as that “uppity negro”, for others he’ll be an “elitist” like John Kerry, or a “show-off” like Al Gore. A multipurpose slam. As long as he can be defined as “not like me” it’ll work.
I agree that the subject is something to be alert too. It seems like a modification of the right wing attack on “elitists”. However, I think if you read the whole Gail Collins article, the quotation actually makes fun of the mundane tastes of Ohioans, who she points out produced eight presidents, the most exciting of whom was William McKinley.
Edwin Friedman wrote a book on family systems titled “Generation to Generation.” It applies to political systems as well. One of the most salient points in Friedman’s tome is this:
To date, Obama has mastered that. He needs to continue.
Yesterday, Juan Cole wrote a brilliant piece about naming that digs deeply but respectfully into the matter of racism. Read it, please.
‘Turk - Gail Collins is not racist - that was several bridges too far. She’s maybe the best columnist they currently have over there, along with Krugman and Kristof. And she’s actually a feminist, unlike the heinous MoDo.
Why does the left insist that every criticism of Obama is racist? Blech!
Bon Voyage! Lucky You!
Great Obama is a racist is this the new GOP talking point. Is this going to be their excuse for everything that we know they will say in the future?
Is anybody buying this? Get some links! get some quotes!
You do not throw bombs here unless you can back them up.
It can be drawn from real life, unfortunately. There is a long history of division among blacks, based on color which in turn has been based upon socioeconomic status in a white-dominated society.
yeah — they did the same thing last night on ATC … airtime for mcbushain (who sounded awful) and summary of obama response… just too predictable
Bon voyage, amuse-toi bien, pas trop de vin et de foie gras…
I thought that he might model some authentic tribal garb from his African trip? Wouldn’t that be fun?
I think it is important to continually point out that those folks who are beginning the smear campaign on Sen. Obama and the Democrats are the same folks that brought us George W. Bush. This should eliminate any sort of punditry or expertise from those folks. How can they have any credibility left? Can we get the MSM to begin to question their judgement?
Behold leader of the free world.
Obama is demonstrably “better” than Kristol, Cohen or Collins. These people (Kristol in particular) have done nothing to raise the level of discourse in this country, and now they’re getting all pissy about someone who seeks to improve things.
A pox on their houses.
Yea, why is that, you gonna give me a bad grade?
On NewsHour, they showed McCain and then Obama’s comeback. No comparison! More like that Obama, please, more!
He does not look good in blue.
I refuse to wear a flag pin so long as any Republic wears one.
Beautiful! Looks like our fate was sealed with that handshake.
thx for the juan cole pointer … fun read.
take that John Sydney McCain III !
That’s kind of why Obama admitted it in a debate moderated by Russert.
reply Can you give me that reference in APA style please?
Oh, there you go, being all political. *g*
I’ve stopped wearing anything with lapels. Too bad Senator Obama can’t do the same. *sigh*
Well, Obama can immunize himself against this particular criticism if he’ll buy himself a mesquite filled lot out west, a chain saw, and wear a big heavy homemade plywood flag on his lapels.
Ya gotta have lapels for that little pin that proves you’re a bona fide American patriot, honey.
Herr Bu$hler is not likely to discuss the ulterior aims of American military presence northern and western Africa — Africom
What’s really unfortunate is that Republics are trying to make the election about wearing lapel ornaments or other nonsensical issues.
Glenn just put up a post that is related, covering the fundie extremists and their support of rethugs. Good reading.

Said Bill Clinton today in Columbia, SC: “Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in ‘84 and ‘88. Jackson ran a good campaign. And Obama ran a good campaign here.”
This was in response to a question from ABC News’ David Wright about it taking “two Clintons to beat” Obama. Jackson had not been mentioned.
Boy, I can’t understand why anyone would think the Clintons are running a race-baiting campaign to paint Obama as “the black candidate.
Now, just like with Bill Cunningham at the Mc Cain rally with his barrage of “Hussein” you can say, oh he’s just using his middle name. It has nothing to do with tone, inflection, or context does it?
What is “APA style” please?
Well, if you listended to Matthews and Buchannon yesterday, they both essentially agreed the McCain would have to maintain the loyalty of people who will vote based on someone’s middle name as well as gain the approval of those who have some portion of a frontal lobe.
Here’s some good old Republican patriotism for you…
No, No, No! None of you understand anything. Don’t you see it is actually BHO who is playing the race card and plunging our pristine political culture into an eternal night of mendacity and cynicism. If you don’t believe me, just check out Sean Wilentz in the New Republic.
http://www.tnr.com/politics/st.....c6c268b304
Now I see, its really Obama that is orchestrating all this….
Ugh, what is it about this race that makes mostly sane people write this stuff? We’ll have enough real race card arguments from the right without playing these games amongst ourselves. Please let this primary be over soon!
Associated Press style manual, I think, though I missed the comment that originated this question.
APA (American Psychological Association) is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. This resource, revised according to the 5th edition of the APA manual, offers examples for the general format of APA research papers, in-text citations, endnotes/footnotes, and the reference page.
it was a joke
Why does the Right insist that any criticism of Israel is anti-semitism?
It was wise-ass Raven being cute about being called out for a misquote.
I heard that little twit, *ucker Carlson, on Moanin’ Schmoe this a.m. say that the Obama camp shouldn’t attack McBatshitCrazySaint on Iraq because McCain will win that battle everytime. Yeah riiiight, *ucker! Nice try dipshit!
IT is interesting that the religious card of being maybe a secret Muslim keeps getting played. His father was from the Luo Tribe of Kenya which is western Kenya near Lake Victoria. When I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Kenya from ‘79-’81 I travelled at times to the area and it is a very Christian region. Northeastern and eastern Kenya has large Muslim populations and Christians and Hindus too.
Now it seems to me that when the Saudi Royals show up in Crawford, Bush holds their hands so maybe he is a secret Muslim too.
The point I am tring to make here is that the racist code words used by folks, the religious jingoism at play here are all part of the fear and hate retoric of people who have nothing legitimate to argue their points with. This usually is related to racial fears but hell guys like Bill Kristol hate the common man on the street because they consider them beneath them. Sometimes we scoff at “rednecks” for sticking to the guns and God issues because they vote against their own economic interests. People are entitled to vote that way.
What if you are a mop top who wears only Nehru jackets? I don’t have any lapels in my wardrobe, so I guess I’m up the spout as far as the patriotic flag pin nazis are concerned.
Here is an anti-Obama YouTube of the Obama/Russert exchange. I could not find one that just included the questions and answers by Russert/Obama.
I will proudly wear the flag pin as soon as they stop wiping their ass with the constitution.
Oh Oh I Know! It’s because of their “narrative” and their “meme” and their “Kabuki”. Did I leave any buzzwords out?
Oopsy. My bad.
The link didn’t take.
priceless!
Wear one on your ass. That should solve everything. :)
I am having to deal with the APA joke on a journal article I am working on with another person.
I just happen to think that when you use quotes around words, that should mean that the words actually came out of someones mouth. Not too much to ask for…
Yuppers. And related to that, I’d really like to see Obama stress his background as a teacher of constitutional law.
Crap! Can someone help me out on how to post a YouTube here?
For “some” that would take the flag that covers Yankee Stadium before the World Series (if that ever happens agan).
” Differentiate yourself and maintain a non-anxious presence. “
succinctly characterizes his Cleveland performance now don’t it ?
and thanks for the Professor Cole link ;)
He’s irrelevant.
Whenever I see an Old Glory Lapel Pin, I consider purchasing a firearm.
What McCain win a battle. Well as long as its about and not in Iraq maybe?
Ah who am I kidding? GAS is $3.39 a gallon in Seattle it went up again! I can’t believe that we are winning in in Iraq when the price of gas keeps going up.
“Yea, copy the URL, write whatever the topic is in the text box, highlight it and then mash the link icon above. Paste the URL in the pop-up box and mash OK. Then submit.”
quote
me
Steve Inski on NPR just interviewed the head of the Southern Baptist Church re Obama. The latter described the Dem Prez race:
“Hillary’s campaigning like she’s on a job interview. Obama’s campaigning like he’s on a DATE.”
That from the head of a church whose congregations still abhor inter-racial dating at their colleges and elsewhere…
Thanks for conjuring up that visual in my head.
