ACLU has another petition to the house to stand firm against the Bush fear mongering. People might want to write to them as well about the non stop ads. Howie Klein has this: GOP front group–backed by Joe Lieberman and Zell Miller attack Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH ) and 14 other democratic freshman.

Congresswoman Shea-Porter has been responding to letters from constituents who have been confused by the GOP attacks and she posted a similar explanation on her website.

These ads are completely viral. I am concerned.

Well someone is spending a lot of money. It’s appalling. Howie Klein has a piece on how Carol Shea Porter had to put up something on her website, since she’s under attack too. He seems to think it’s directed at mostly democratic freshman congresspersons. I think elections must be part of the equation. Is Karl Rove at large on this, besides Holy Joe? The ads were playing *constantly* during the weekend in CT.

I live in Atlanta GA in the 5th District–Rep. John Lewis (D). However an ad buy in Atlanta would reach some Republican districts.

Georgia’s districts are drawn so that heavily Democratic areas are pretty much encapsulated into as few as possible districts.

Now here’s another scary picture:Harold Ford, Chris Shays and Holy Joe.

When Harold Ford, Jr. walked onto the Quick Center stage for his OPEN Visions forum he knew whose district he was standing in.
“There is not a better Congressman in Washington than Chris Shays,” said Ford, to a crowd of about 600 Fairfield University students and community members.
“No national legislator has been to Iraq more times than Chris Shays.”
Shays, who was also in attendence, responded, “The reason Harold Ford likes me so much is because when I realized that I wasn’t going to be president, I went up to him and told him that he was one of the three legislator’s that I thought would someday.”

Brett Kappel, a campaign-finance lawyer in Washington, said it was “not permissible for a 501(c )3 to take federal funds to transfer those to a ( c )4 for the purposes of the (c )4 running attack ads on political candidates,” though it was possible that such money could fall into an exception that courts recognize for issue ads. “The involvement of federal funds is a troubling thing,” Kappel said. “If someone filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service, the IRS is going to look very closely at any funds used for any political activity.”
Yes for G*d’s sake please do file a complaint. This is some of the most egregious BS I ever have seen come into my living room on a local affiliate. The fact that it’s possibly federally funded and aimed at local dems with the nod of Holy Joe is something to scream about.

BTW. I spotlighted the previous post, and I am hoping CT newspapers will cover this. Not holding my breath though.

Thanks Jane for covering this. As you know they are running these ads against Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy in CT. They were playing constantly on NBC. The ad makes no sense and it’s so dishonest I want to scream. The only rationale –other than spreading malice against house dems –that I can think of, is Jim Himes v. Chris Shays.
