First of all, in the video below, just who is this salt & pepper-haired man who coherently speaks in complete sentences?
And why is he mentioning in 2000 John McCain's affection for lobbyist money?
BUSH: “It’s important on campaign funding reform that we have campaign funding reform. But it’s also important for people to know that my friend is raising money from people who have business in front of his committee. Nothing illegal about that, but I just want to make sure the facts are laid bare.”
BUSH: “What I need to do is make it clear and not let Senator McCain get away with this Washington double-talk.”
And just this morning, David Brooks -- who NEVER pushes Republican Campaign talking points -- told me that John McCain has always gone against lobbyists interest. I guess Charlie Black and the rest of the gang are counter-insurgents in the lobbying game. Who knew? Who could have anticipated?
Who am I to believe, David Brooks or my lying eyes?

ZED!
Attaturk!
Senator Chris Dodd to endorse Obama in White House bid.
I don’t think Hilary can win now but as long as she stays in the race we get debates. After every Obama win we get national coverage for Obama’s victory speeches and well the guy is a great speaker! We need him to have TV time to rally our base.
Hilary needs to hold on until the GOP choose a presidential nominee. We cannot afford to give the GOP free air time from now until summer as the media reports on every GOP primary contest. I want the TV networks to interrupt McCain’s lousy primary victory speeches to cover Obama’s primary victory speeches the insult to McCain alone subconsciously sends a message to the voters.
Why all the pressure for Hilary to leave when Huckabee has no chance of winning but is still in the race?
The GOP needs money more than we do a long contested primary forces them to spend that money.
I want the GOP’s big corporate donors to look at the primary totals in the Democratic contest and the GOP contests and realize that we are not fading. That both Obama and Hilary are getting more voters to the polls in red states than the GOP.
Norske has a good idea last thread about a firepup meet up! Heck I would like to meet him and all you folks.
EPU’d from last thread–but on topic of US election cycle:
NAFTA’s now back in the debate.
On MSNBC:
Hillary can’t run away from NAFTA, as she’s now trying to do via her supporter. Bubba’s two-term admins are marked by NAFTA. That’s the Big Dawg’s signature. Hill can’t have it both ways. Can’t both use Bill and run away from him at the same time.
Here’s my FDL piece not too long ago on NAFTA…
Now OH has lost a lot of jobs because of NAFTA. Hill might well OH, in spite of the double-digit leas she now has over Obama…
Methinks Hill is trapped: between a rock and a hard place…
Seconded!
OMG, not that!
John McCrazy can’t turn around without bumping into a lobbyist at this point.
Now let’s put several things together: (1) the resurfacing of the NAFTA debate; (2) Gennifer Flowers selling those tapes because “of renewed interest” (her words); (3) “the many faces of Hillary” that played out like a bad movie (pun intended) over the weekend; and (4) the Obama robe row and implications that the Hillary camp throw those out there.
And y’all come to your own conclusions.
Good point. If we can keep Hillary and Barack civil, but debating, we can have two candidates POUNDING McCain for months to come.
I don’t see any downside to continuing to spotlight and contrast the Democratic contenders with the Republican freakshows.
OT. OK Kayinmaine are you ready for our next snow storm? This has gone on way too long. Thank goodness the critters are back in session so we can have light entertainment during the blizzard(s). Stay warm if you can. I heard the price of heating is 3.27 a gallon this morning. I heat with wood, phew!
1. That Hillary’s Camp is not nearly so ready to battle the GOP.
2. Tha Obama’s Camp is, contrary to #1’s claim more than capable. They are very good a being nice people while applying the shiv — or even convincing you to apply it yourself. Not a bad skill in politics.
My pal Michael Eric Dyson on now–on MSNBC I mean…
Just guess what he and Will Geist are talking about. BTW, because of today’s debate that it’s sponsoring, It’s MSNBC’s “Super Tuesday” (they have that brand and market covered), MSNBC will beat this to death (pun intended) by writing Hill’s obit all day…
Home Depot’s 4th quarter profit is down 27% Mitt’s Bain Capital hedge fund bought the company. Now just what kind of businessman buys a company tied to home repair when every economist is saying the housing market is going under and is likely to stay bad for years?
I remember back when Mitt was still in the race Pat Buchanan was saying that Mitt’s business experience would be a boon to the GOP in a presidential race where the economy was going under. Bawhahaha!

Hey everybody, there’s going to be a debate tonight!
Isn’t that exciting?!
is obama trying to have it both ways too? this mcclatchy piece makes it sound like that might be the case - but i don’t know enough to judge for myself.
Are Clinton, Obama flip-flopping on NAFTA support?
The hyperarticulate Michael Eric Dyson, as usual…
The repair and renovation market usually goes up when the sales market goes down.
But it seems like our candidates attempts at civility fell apart this weekend. I am not really looking forward to a “battle” between them.
First of all, in the video below, just who is this salt & pepper-haired man who coherently speaks in complete sentences?
Bush before the Adderall?
Aw come on, this ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, this ain’t no foolin around!
Good gawd, another one! Jees. Not only today, but Friday and next Monday too. I’ve had it. I literally have enough room in my driveway to pull the cah in and walk next to it. If my son needs to get in? He has to be very creative! LOL
The price of oil is over the top. Of course, with the billions the oil companies are making, you’d think they’d streamline their current refineries to get the machines to pull out the oil and refine it quicker. Nope! Just sitting on it.
Yesterday I was listening to Ass Limbo of right wing radio fame and he was talking to a “poor citizen” who was complaining about the price of oil for the restaurant he owns (he pays over $11,000/month to heat the place and for natural gas for the cookstoves). Yep! This ‘poor citizen’ also said the dividends from the oil stock he bought years ago do pay for his heating oil and gas for the car…….but man……..is he ever suffering! He kept saying, “What is going to happen to my grandkids, Rush?”, and Rush acted like he was so concerned for him and his family.
Oh please! They can all fuck off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *slapping hand quickly over my mouth* Sorry. I had to get that off my chest.
Nomolos, I hope you stay warm too. Heating with wood is the best. :-)
Have a good day everyone. Going to work.
Cerberus, bought Chrysler and a majority stake in GMAC while the auto industry is in the tank. Cerberus chairman is Dan Quayle. Smart business people these goopers.
usually goes up when the sales market goes down.
Could be but in Portland, Seattle and North of Chicago all people have been doing is fixing up their homes and reselling them since Bill was in office. The home repair market might be played out for awhile.
Yes we need to talk about issues not Obama’s robes. Obama is a Movement regular smear tactics will backfire.
Except that if everyone did it we wouldn’t have any trees, but that wouldn’t matter because we’d all be dead from lack of oxygen.
Some things never change I guess. Lobbyists everywhere.
This increasingly looks like no contest either. What’s the benefit of them publicly bashing each other?
Granted, we will get the added benefit of Clinton and Obama’s supporters fighting with each other. It will be the greatest Liberal Circular Firing Squad Evahhhh!
I think I’d rather go to a disco and fool around.
Well I do agree but my wood cost 580 for the season and just yesterday a friend of mine, in Maine, spent (250gals x3.37 gal) $842. That is for one month of heating.
I don’t know the answer but as I am retired and on a fixed income I would be cold and broke by now if I did not heat with wood.
They gave Dan Quayle hedge fund! This is whats wrong with crony capitalism what moron says I got some extra bucks and I think Dan Quayle or George Bush for that matter can make me more money than a selfmade Democrat like George Soros or Warren Buffet? Because they are the right kind of people.
touche
I wanna boogie!

Anyone else think that’s hilarious? And btw, notice how little attention is being paid to Junior lately. How he must hate official irrelevance.
Move to Georgia!
Besides, I think we are all ready and deserving of a party.
;)
Hey everyone, there’s a debate tonight. Did ya know that?
Oh, and in case you haven’t felt it yet, wholesale inflation was up 1% in January.
Stagfaltion wasn’t around for long now was it?
Full-on INFLATION…get it while it’s hot!
[slinks off to count the penny jar]
each of these candidates becomes better the longer both of them are in the race, this is one of the main reasons it was a travesty edwards made his early exit, he certainly made both of these candidates better, and more progressive
I don’t want to say he took these candidates to the left because us “lefty blogs” are actually centrist, what WE wan is what the majority of americans want
in any event, it might actually be good that nader is running, he will NOT get democratic votes because the democrats know they cannot afford to waste their vote this election
nader has some great platform and I would really like to see hillary and obama address that platform before the general
at any rate, the longer both of these candidates remain, the better vetted, the more sincere their voice, the stronger, the quicker of wit.
and look what happened to mccain, it certainly looks like he can’t win and romney is thinking about re enetering the race.
the same thing might happen to either or both of these candidates
go hillary
go obama
edwards, hang, we need to keeping the platform progressive, hang and advise john, please
We’re doing a combo here in MN. Wood stove, heat pump in support of gas heat. Amazing savings.
Get on up on the floor
Two difficult tasks for the candidates tonight.
1. Hillary has to attack without looking shrill.
2. Obama has to respond without looking patronizing.
Clinton has looked like #1 a lot lately, which is bad politics IMO. Obama has generally avoided #2 except for that moment in the debate in New Hampshire when he said she was “likeable enough” and it came across badly.
But those darn lobbyists just won’t take no for an answer. They just keep on hanging around, and their clients just keep on giving them more money to keep on hanging around. “OK, he didn’t go along with us this time, but I’m sure that next time we’ll be able to get him to do our bidding. Next time for sure — and we’ll be there waiting, no matter how many millions we have to give to folks like Black and Iseman in the meantime.”
Earth to David Brooks: McCain sure as hell ain’t no Lucy with the football, taking it away as those lobbyists keep coming back to kick it.
Not long after coming to this country I had reason to be in Atlanta. I got out of the taxi at a hotel and was about to pick up my bag when the cab driver said to “leave it the boy will get it”. The “boy” was a black white haired man. I let the porter take the bag, gave him a large tip and apologized for the racist slur from the cabbie. I do not like Georgia, have never been back and have no intention of moving to anywhere below mason dixon!!!!!!!
That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout! :)
I’ll make my roast Garlic, Habenero Salsa:)
If you put the peppers in the juicer the liquid is hotter because its freed from the solid food and is absorbed quicker by the tongue and the nose, the juicier kicks up some of the vapor in the air like teargas.
Ah, I need to dig out my MLK quote about “People from Mississippi need to come to Chicago to learn how to hate”. But I hear ya.
Ahhh, temptation is powerful.
Good for you. We are looking at putting a solar panel in for hot water. Anything we can do to get away from bigbiz.
Now that’s what I’m talking about….
Where is someone talking about having a meetup?
For years many of us in Arizona have been yelling and waiving our hands saying yoohoo…. John McBush is NOT ST McBush….. yoohoo…. look at all the defense contracts (earmarks) AZ gets…… hellooooo …. just who is riding that bus…
BTW I will be in NYC next week for business….. I don’t know what the off work schedule will be but if anyone is interested… I will be in the Times Square area…
McCain has more lobbyists working for him than anybody? Bobo has gone beyond Kool Aid he’s dropped the bad Acid.
Full disclosure. I was living in Boston and it was during the Louise Day Hicks era!
In the last thread Norske suggested an annual meetup in Vegas.
Six months after yearly KOS.
Cool idea.
Looking back on the last seven years, I’d say it’s been a long strange trip.
yea, I wouldn’t fuck with no bellfolks in the ATL these days!
EPU
Don’t bunch up, one frag would get all of us!
The only reason to read Bobo is to find out what Karl is thinking and what the GOP talking heads will all be saying. Its brave people like you who risk losing your lunch to read Bobo who keep the rest of us informed.
Cool…. I can drive up there in an evening ….
after all….Arizona has the cheapest gas in the nation…. $2.56 …. wonder why? We have no refineries, gas is piped in from CA & TX…. we have a fair amount of taxes…. it has hung right around $3.00 all fall & winter….
Oh don’t get me wrong, heating with wood a blessing for those who can do it. In fact I do it myself at my cabin upstate. It’s impossible to do on a large scale basis, so I don’t have a problem with people who burn wood. My only point was that it shouldn’t be looked at as a solution to any of our energy problems.
Good morning Attaturk, pups!
Ummm, cause you have a Senator who “gets things done“?
(Oh baby your earmark is so big!)
Good Morning Egregious, Everybody!
Katymine, NYC pups have meetups often, if you see eCAHN let her know your travel schedule! Perris are you still around? can you get word to eCAHN?
.
Hey HI egregious! Moved in yet?
Fan out! Fan out! Watch yer flank!
I suspect you will find my flank in Circus-Circus with the kids.
I agree absolutely. It would make far more sense to have tax breaks or subsidies for “alternative” energy methods and for energy efficiency. I had a number of apartments during the Carter years and took advantage of many of the tax breaks to insulate, replace windows and doors and I purchased new furnaces. Of course all those efficiency breaks went out the window with the raygun and bush1 “tax cuts”
Lemme know about the next NYC meetup.
ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (CNN) — Republican presidential candidate John McCain defended his belief that U.S. troops will need to stay in Iraq for decades Monday but said the unpopular war will soon end “for all intents and purposes.”
“My friends, the war will be over soon … for all intents and purposes,” Sen. John McCain said Monday.
McCain said his potential Democratic rivals have distorted his January comment that U.S. forces may need to remain in Iraq for up to 100 years. Speaking at a campaign event in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, he said that referred to a long-term American presence similar to those in South Korea or Kuwait.
“My friends, the war will be over soon … for all intents and purposes, although the insurgency will go on for years and years and years,” the Arizona senator said. “But it will be handled by the Iraqis, not by us.”
Anyone notice that McCain has that loser Mike DeWine onstage with him in Ohio.
Makes me laugh.
NYC meetups
I’m in Utah at the moment & don’t have the next one on the schedule yet, but anyone interested email me at rosannecahn at aol dot com. I’ll put you on the list to be notified when the next is planned. Also, we can get one up for out-of towners traveling to the Big Apple!
“my friends = “I am going to lie through my teeth now”
So is he going to pull the troops out now or is he just pulling our leg? Does he have a secret plan to end the war?
Hey Things, Elliott! Living and working here in California. Still have a lot of boxes to unpack. The kids are all coming for Easter so I’d better keep at it til I find their baskets.
I miss the early morning fdl conversations.
I am so glad you mentioned that. What a little worm!
And, a loser…hahahaha!
OT. Jeeze who was president in October 1981?
I just love these fiscally brilliant goopers
He never suggested pulling any troops out! That would be surrender, and victory is dependent of staying. All he meant is that the legions of trained and ready Iraqi soldiers will soon be taking over all the dangerous aspects of occupation. The US soldiers, while still in country, will be just as safe and sound as soldiers serving in Germany, or Japan.
If you doubt that you must hate America/Want the terrorist to win.
lol! I thought you said “I just love these fiscally brilliant poopers”
John McCain must have read the Art of War backwards!
toe-mae-toe
toe-mah-toe
no shit
What is your situation will you be posting again?
Have a McCain cow!
The US is paying former insurgents to stop attacking US troops. That sure seems like ’showing weakness’ to me.
It is actually emboldening the enemy.
-G
This ain’t no Mudd club, no CBGB’s, I ain’t got time for that now!
You deserved a response.
See ya’ll later.
I love it!
Now I have an art project for the kids!
:D
and financing their operations!
Hmmmm. I wonder if we could secure our border by paying people not to cross.
The man who stabbed the Obama supporter is a registered Republican.
-G
When McCain says the ‘war will be over soon’ isn’t he broadcasting the intentions of the US to the terrorists?
That sap is gonna snap.
-G
Has a nice ring to it. Now to get him where it won’t do anybody harm.
i’m in the city a lot for work … would be great to meet some folks in person one of those times
The Supreme Court begins hearing the Exxon Valdez case in 25 minutes. My fingers are crossed…
lol!!
ps I love your maverick, tw3k
will email her now elliot, and link to your post
I found this on RonD’s page this morning.
Interesting.
Wow! How old is that case?
lol, thx :)
McCow!
On Washington Journal, they’re showing how we can make our own video clips from footage from their archives…pretty cool for bloggers.
agree that keeping the demo primary “in play” keeps it in the news. And gives us a chance to keep focusing on positive positions on the candidate’s part. The danger, of course, is of them tearing each other apart …
Got an email from Dodd edorsing Obama just now.
Wow, just got e-mail from Dodd endorsing Obama.
jinx!
Me too, I was just reading it.
OK, crossing my fingers, legs, arms, toes, and eyes.
(I just hope I don’t cross the cat right now, shes’ on my lap.)
Slime Magazine’s Mark Halperin is advising McCain to use open racism against Obama in order to win.
-G
Well that makes it pretty freakin’ official.
I wonder if your friendship and support meant as much to you as mine did?
OT, mcidiot gives more evidence that the “surge” is “working”:
50 games, not 49, not 51, that was some careful counting …
eh, meant as much to him as mine did.
Did Lindsey realize he was flying in circles?
OT - anyone watching / listening to the HJC hearing on blackwell and voter suppression?
just heard an R use all his time to rant on the failure of the house to pass the senate FISA bill.
gah, why is’nt that surprising :/
Where is it?
McCain’t‘08
head’s up -
in the HJC: conyers just anounced that there will be a discussion of fisa on the house floor TONIGHT.
note, this item is NOT on the house’s schedule (via the daily leader).
did Dodd have any delegates at all? Iowa was the only race he competed in?
HJC hearing
A discussion, as in “we’re going to talk about it and rub the President’s nose in his hypocrisy” or a discussion, as in “We’re going to vote on something”?
whats up with scheduling slight of hand lately?
good question… but all i have is what conyers just said.
i don’t know.
But, did he give an OT warning first?
Actually, let them continue to look foolish. The more time that goes by and we don’t go Boom, the more clear it becomes that we in fact don’t need the Keep America Safe part of the bill.
I was wondering that too.
McCow 08!
i don’t think it’s anything new - i just think we’re paying more attention, so we see it more often. imo, the best way to get them to stop doing it is to call them on it each and everytime.
that said, i did not see any sleight of hand on leahy’s SJC hearing last week - doesn’t mean there wasn’t, just that don’t see it.
Slime Magazine’s Mark Halperin is advising McCain to use open racism against Obama in order to win.
Can you be a bit more specific, I can’ t find anything like this on the Times site?
showing my ignorance, i know that committees can certainly meet just to discuss things. But, do the full house or senate ever meet and discuss not in the context of possible legislation or resolutions? I.e., are they always voting on something if they’re talking? Or do they have a mechanism to just give speeches and “deliberate”? If so, how is that managed?
Here Raven…thru ABlog: http://www.americablog.com/200.....hould.html
heh.
i agree. but that doesn’t mean that the house leaders won’t cave. imo, the best way to prevent that is to subject their actions to the highest level of oversight that we can muster.
In the House, they have “One Minute Speeches” first thing in the morning and late at night, where members can take the floor and talk about whatever blessed thing has crossed their mind recently. In the Senate, they have “Morning Business” which is basically the same thing.
well, i join you in showing my ignorance (i’ve only this year been trying to follow congressional actions with any level of detail - and then only on a couple of items).
here’s what i’ve seen: both the house and senate floor do lots of talking without it being on a specific piece of legislation. see especially “morning hour”
Last minute evening meeting can’t be GOOD news.
I wonder if he plans on writing “Things Obama Can Do to Attack McCain That Romney Couldn’t.”
imo, it could be anything or nothing…
but it’s up to us to provide congressional oversight.
Many years. I worked on the Exxon Valdez when it was in drydock in San Diego (before they changed the name)in ‘89-’90.
Something that has not been looked at, at least I am not aware of any stories is what has happened to gwb. Look at him before he became prez. He did not stumble over english, or speak like english was his second language. He was fairly articulate, he could make himself understood easily. Then look at what happened to him on 9-11. First he just sat and stared for a while after being told that NYC was under attack, then he took off in AF1 and just flew around, and then his presser at Barksdale AFB in La. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He looked, and sounded scared. Then look at his mannerisms and speech since then. Both show a marked degradation. Is there something physically wrong with him? Did he suffer a mental breakdown? Or, like many have said, has he started drinking again? Or is just stress on a basically unstable personality? Whatever his problem is, it has become much more pronounced over the last 5 years. I look back at film of him when he was gov. of Texas, he was basically a hale fellow well met type of person, look at him within the last few days and contrast that with 8-9 years ago, its like he is a totally different person now.
