Toni Morrison musta been smoking somthin’ when she that…BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Demetrius just said he thinks Bill Clinton has officially had his “blackness” revoked.
I love Cornel West yelling, “Tell it!” over and over again. Made my day.
Now I know why I been in trouble all my life.
Try to use it as your address!
If Mr. Gregory thinks that the black folks experience of driving down the road, hearing the police siren and then breathing a sigh of relief when they pass(even when you’ve done nothing wrong)is a uniquely “black experience”, then he has something to learn about the “white experience” in this country.
This is simply the.best.video.ever.
I’m in real trouble…if I vote for Clinton, I’m a racist and if I vote for Obama I’m a sexist.
Boxturtle (But if I vote for McBush, I’m just an idiot)
Cornell West is bowin up!
The most effective civil action our government can take is to create an environment for good jobs.
When a woman has a good job, the man in her life becomes an option, not a necessity. Liberating for both. When blacks have a good job, they can move to better neighborhoods with better schools. A good job puts people in control of their lives. A good job can ease oppression quicker than any law I can think of.
I’d bet large if you gave women the chance of a $50,000 job with benies, or the ERA, the majority would take the job. Same with African-Americans – the job, or a one-time $100,000 reparation payment?
So yeah, between sista Souljah and NAFTA, Clinton’s ‘blackness’ is smoke and mirrors.
Here’s my black creds. Even with the gulf between how blacks and whites experience America, I think I have more in common with my black co-workers than white SOB’s like Jack Welch and George Bush. One other thing I have in common with blacks. White men have given me more trouble in 5 minutes than blacks have my whole life.
This is very sweet. But there is truth, too.
“cab passed you by because you’re the first Black president?”
ah, the shock of someone speaking the truth.
like a dive into cold water on a hot and muggy day. bracing.
“You white people need to thank god it’s not a brother like me!”
puh-leaze he is not saying it’s unique, but if your black/brown driving a nice car in some areas, don’t think you won’t get pulled over on some bogus stuff
Was that one of Gregory’s lines?
That is a hoot.

On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon there was a special on the tube. They interviewed a brother who said, “I regret the fact that I will never have the kind of friendships with white guys like I did there”. I regret it too, I know it’s true but I regret it.
Now I get it. Obama is guilty of CWB!
Tell it brother Gregory!
good one, jane. thanks for sharing.
I watched most of the conference Saturday on C-Span, Dick Gregory was
hell on wheels decades ago and still tells it straight. The conference
will be rebroadcast Friday evening on C-Span.
Demetrius rawks and deserves a Howardly ;-)
Tell him I said he should post some of his photoshops over here
Yea, talkin about Obama.
Thirty-five forty years ago, dick Gregory would admit that there was one group of white folks who could relate to the “Driving while Black” experience. That was the long haried college student, which at the time, he called the new “[black]”
“You need a haircut boy” said John Law
Thanks for saying what I didn’t know I thought but I do. I so want my daughters to be self reliant. It’s much better to want to be with someone, than need to be.
The Student as N***** is the title of an essay and subsequent book by American educator Jerry Farber. The essay first appeared in the Los Angeles Free Press in 1967 and is often cited as one of the first underground publications to receive widespread recognition. It was reprinted over 500 times in the during the 1960s and was published in book form in 1970 by Pocket Books.
The essay, published during the height of the American Civil Rights Movement, in which Farber was an active participant, draws an extended analogy between the status of students at California State University and the status of African Americans.

It is quite profound to me how the power the Clintons acquired starting in Arkansas masked their real deal. The Clintons are definitely being outed at this juncture in their lives. The first black President came to New York in 2000 after his last term and tried to move into very cher offices next to Carnegie Hall in midtown Manhattan. This was blocked by Delay and the Clintons only then went to Harlem, a closer commute to Westchester County and their multimillion dollar home.
What did that bullshit ever mean, that he screwed a bunch of women? Any motherfucker that smoked but didn’t inhale would have been laughed out of town. . .sheeeeeet!
raven @ 10:
Cornel West…
I saw Gregory give a speech about six months after Kent and Jackson State and that was a prime driver of the speech.
If you vote for any you are a tool corporitania. You can’t win

Dick Gregory sounds shrill as his claws come out.
(did I just say that?)
was the prime driver a student, a black or both? *g*
thx
Well, Dick Gregory is one hell of a lot more interesting orator than George Bush.
huh? what video were you watching?
Claws my ass, he would flat kick your ass.
CINCINNATI, Ohio (CNN) — A supporter of John McCain, speaking at an official campaign event in Ohio attended by the Arizona senator, called Barack Obama a “hack, Chicago-style Daly politician,” and told the crowd “all is going to be right with the world when the great prophet from Chicago takes the stand, and the world leaders who want to kill us will simply be singing Kumbaya around the table of Barack Obama.”
“At some point in the near future the media, the stooges from the New York Times, CBS (The Clinton Broadcasting System), NBC (The Nobody But Clinton Network), The All Bill Clinton Channel (ABC), and the Clinton News Network at some point is going to peel the bark off Barack Hussein Obama,” said controversial conservative commentator Bill Cunningham, an Ohio native.
“That day will come and then you’ll know the truth about his business dealings with Rezko, when he got sweetheart deals in Chicago,” he added, “and the illegal loans that he received, at some point the media will quit taking sides on this and maybe start covering Barack Hussein Obama the same way they covered Bush, the same way they covered Cheney, and they same way they cover every Republican.”
Cunningham also compared Hillary Clinton unfavorably to current First Lady Laura Bush.
McCain was not on stage during these remarks. Immediately after the event, he distanced himself from the comments, telling reporters that he had been informed about “disparaging remarks” about his potential Democratic opponents.
“I have repeatedly stated my respect for Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton, and I will treat them with respect,” he said.
“I regret any comments that may be made about these two individuals who are honorable Americans, we just have strong philosophical differences, so I want to disassociate myself from any disparaging remarks that may have been said about them,” he said, adding later that “I absolutely repudiate such comments, and again I will take responsibility it will never happen again. It will never happen again.”
I will defend that to this point – inhaling is a learned response and I don’t know if I ever knew anyone who inhaled the first times they ever smoked anything. All indications are that he was a straight arrow through school and in those days “good kids” didn’t smoke anything.
So, yeah, I can believe that he probably didn’t inhale cuz he most likely didn’t know HOW to inhale.
this is off topic but you’re gonna love this think prgress clip
rove is getting his stings pulled like a marionette and they force him to hold a banner that says “free don siegleman”
there is irony in the fact that he’s holding the banner but the real irony is watching him get played like a child’s marionette
Uh Huh.
Can’t get enough of that line, “When you try to use it as your address”
I happened to hear that Cunningham sleaze on WRKO in Boston this past weekend.
These losers are dying. Their whole world as it has been constructed in their feeble, selfish, hateful, xenophobic and entitled world is crashing down around them.
That McCain’s campaign allowed this mouth breather on stage at his event is a shame. Almost as bad as that jagoff in Texas in 2000 blabbing about how McCain ‘came home and forgot those left in Vietnam’.
Shameful shit.

That is essentially what Clinton said on the Arsenio Hall show when Arsenio asked him about it. Not from lack of trying-just couldn’t.

Still waiting.
And along those lines – not inhaling doesn’t mean not getting stoned. I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s first high was a “contact high” – just being in the dorm room…
i believe karl says “i’ll look at it skeptically” when he poses for the pic.
brilliant. kudos to alan breslauer.
Banks are in serious trouble. My daughter works for a credit union and they cut everyone’s hours – at a loss for her of $400 a month and she is a single mom.
It was just typical Clinton bullshit triangulation.
Dick Gregory needs his own HBO Special… or at least Bill Maher should invite Gregory and Hamsher to be on his panel. *g*
Dick Gregory speaks about Joe Louis on a documentary program on HBO. Joe Louis, America’s Hero…Betrayed. It’s a must see program if you are so inclined. It will be aired a number of times. Or you can see it anytime over the next month or so if you have ‘On Demand’.

So Chris Dodd’s backing Obama now. Watch for Edwards to endorse Obama over this next week to give perhaps just enough bump to take both TX and OH. Edwards can say he’s been disappointed with the bizarre behaviour from Hillary these last few days, and especially if she gets extra negative tonight at the debate.
I’ve been suspecting Edwards will endorse Obama just before Mar 4th all along, and now he has a easy excuse in the extreme change of tone from Team Clinton.
Saw a political cartoon. Looking through the back window of a pickup truck with a Bush/Cheney 2000 and 2004 bumper sticker and a confederate flag decal you see the outline of two guys. One says “who you votin fer?” The other says “That thar Obama boy….in the primary HAHAHAHAHA!” That about says it. The repugnantklan is choosing Obama with the whole Democrat for a Day plan. Are you Obamazoids REALLY delusional enough to think the repugs are gonna vote for him in the general election? They WANT your guy. Gee, wonder why? Maybe because they think he’ll be a pushover? Ya think?
Come on bro. Tobacco maybe. Think of it this way, who ever smoked da kine alone the first time (see Animal House)? Ain’t know bodeee turinin someone on and wastin perfectly good tokes on someone who wouldn’t. . .
It’ll get a lot worse, too.

How’d you get that rock off your head again?
Got any proof?
That is watch-it-twice good. When he says “try to use it as your address”, he’s really dropping the hammer.
I love this. Rs are spinning so hard they are about to launch and so we get: we’re still in power and we get to choose who we run against.
First it was we want to run against HRC because of her high negatives. Now it’s we want to run against Obama because we all know we’re bigots.
You win. Whose delusional now?
As a black man, I have always thought this sentiment was ridiculous.
A perfect example of “If someone famous says something than it must be so!”
If Edwards has joined up with SEIU and Move-On in a new project and both of them have endorsed Obama, it would be strange for him to endorse Hillary.
Man, this one never gets old for ya, does it?
From virtually every bit of polling, media reporting, and a whole bunch of personal anecdotes, yes I think many Repubs will vote for Obama in the General. In fact, I know personally many Repubs that voted for Hillary in their open primaries because they feel McCan’t can beat her, and they’d have no problem choosing St. John over Hillary. They do not feel McStain can beat Obama and not even sure if they want him to. Not all Repubs are wackjob Lush Limpballz spewers after all. Some actually do care about the Constitution and how troops are treated and if American bombs kill innocent people.
The various Rpeubs I’ve talked with said voting for Hillary in open primaries is just common knowledge in Repub circles.
Does anyone know what’s up with Richardson? He keeps making noises about endorsing but as of now hasn’t.
don’t follow you on this one? The problem is, that black people have always been in fear of being beaten and treated in a substandard way by police. It goes back hundreds of years. If you are referring to being scared due to it being your car giving away the fact that you look different, that is not quite the same. Black people that are families driving down the road in the family car are still more likely than white people to have problems associated with their color than their other outward appearances.
Isn’t it too late for anyone to endorse Hillary? Her campaign is going off a cliff and I certainly would not, if I were Edwards, endorse her – there simply is no reason.
It’s ‘barackite’ to you
Fitz up now!
They WANT your guy.
You come here every day saying that. How about some evidence? Recent polls suggest otherwise.
Speaking of endorsements, I haven’t noticed many or any people talking about the huge advantage Obama has in newspaper endorsements. I think he has every major city paper in TX endorsing him already, and at least a few in OH, perhaps many more? I don’t remember seeing such domination in newspaper endorsements before. Sinking ship indeed.
My thoughts exactly…it just makes no sense. On Kos right now there is a new piece about Hillary courting the conservative.
I do remember the news that she goes weekly to a conservative prayer group. Nothing wrong with that but put with this story makes sense.
One of Obama’s tripartate economics advisors was NEC and on the CEA during Clinton’s Presidency, Cutler even prepared the OVP’s daily economics briefing. Yet when Obama has campaigners or endorsements from Clinton’s former staff appear it’s lauded. Even if they were NAFTA proponents who have changed their own tune regarding Universal health Care.
Different politics, change?
Do you have a link? I can’t seem to getthe one at Marcy’s place to work
Even the editor of Texas Monthly, a bush love fest glass table magazine,
describes the Obama turnout as a tsunami, big trouble for the pukes@home.
Just think – she could have had us and she blew it.
She was arrogant and inevitable …now she’s mad
FWIW, replying to drive bys just encourages more of them.
So now showing loyalty to one’s own race is the right thing to do. That whole “my race is the human race” is so Before Obama. Keep me posted if anything changes.
Some are more like hit-and-runs – no?
your right, but I couldn’t resist. I’ll drink my chocolate-banana smoothie and behave :)
Yea, but it’s fun to insult non-regulars!
????? care to elaborate?? (uh oh is this another hit-and-run?)
Where is Fitz up?

You are welcome.
When we think of female independence vis a vis marriage,we often think of a man subtly or egregiously oppressing the woman.
My experience was different. Mom and dad loved each other, and they were foolish over me and my brother. But she relied on him to do the ‘guy’ stuff (take care of the cars, pay the bills, etc.) and when he died early, she had no skills in these vital areas.
I’ve made sure my wife knows all this stuff, so if I step out in front of a bus, she can go on with her life without missing a beat.
I hope your girls live independently before they settle into a relationship, and carve out a place for themselves within a relationship.
That’s a pretty good screening process, actually. If a guy can’t handle the independence, kick him to the curb.
It’s a way to get out of the huge debt the rethugs have stuck us with – just devalue the currency.
Sadly, you are probably correct.
When you have been in the dark for so long, the light hurts your eyes.

Won’t disagree there, but it’s all about how we challenge them.
Wow:
“I think there is a strain within the pro-Israel community that says unless you adopt an unwavering pro-Likud ap-proach to Israel, then you’re anti-Israel, and that can’t be the measure of our friendship with Israel,” leading Democratic presidential contender Illinois Senator Barack Obama said Sunday.
“If we cannot have an honest dialogue about how do we achieve these goals, then we’re not going to make progress,” he said.

Hey folks — David Montero is chatting live about his reporting and documentary work on Pakistan in the next thread. If folks could drop in and welcome him, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks much!
wobblybits,
What’s to elaborate. It seems pretty clear that Gregory was saying there was something wrong with Bill Clinton as a politician having been identified with issues and concerns important to the black voter – that he was always a pretender, much like an eight year old who thinks he is king of a play castle.
And wobblybits, I don’t care if you play dumb or to the crowd in this thread. Or if you think I’m engaged in hit and run, or that I don’t post at Firedoglake enough to intrude in your thread. I’ve made my comments.

Another democratic debate gearing up, pitching obama v. clinton…
..one last week.. and one the week before…
I am curious why the Republican candidates don’t debate any more. Is it because every time they debate, all of them look like even bigger fools than before?
I do wish McCain and Huckabee would debate again. Have they debated 1 on 1 yet? How many times have Obama and Clinton debated 1 on 1?
“I think there is a strain within the pro-Israel community that says unless you adopt an unwavering pro-Likud ap-proach to Israel, then you’re anti-Israel, and that can’t be the measure of our friendship with Israel,” leading Democratic presidential contender Illinois Senator Barack Obama said Sunday.
“If we cannot have an honest dialogue about how do we achieve these goals, then we’re not going to make progress,” he said.
It is statements like this that has this man a thumb and fore finger apart from the presidency.
I don’t think Bush has said anything so well thought out (without sucking up to the audience in receipt of the answer) in all the time he’s been in office.
Hackles down, I really wasn’t sure where you were coming from. Now that you explained it, I just don’t agree. He wasn’t picking on Bill clinton, he was chastising black people for having lulled Bill into that predicament. Don’t get ruffled, it’s Dick Gregory.
Don’t patronize me, I made the hit-and-run comment because we have had other people come in and make comments only to disappear. another poster kindly warned us not to respond to hit-and-run posts and I wasn’t sure if your post fell under that or not.
Relax, no harm was meant
wobblybits,
Fair enough.
OT, and not that this is new, but Bush is certifiable.
“I believe 50 years from now, people will look back at this period of time, and say, thank God the United States of America did not lose its faith in the transformative power of liberty to bring the peace we want for our children and our grandchildren.”
This tripe goes hand in hand with the “History will judge me” meme that he loves to run with to avoid accountability for this train wreck of an administration he and Darth have served up.
If there is any justice in this world, he’ll be seeing a judge long before “History” gets a turn.
Well Dick Morrise sure feels that’s what’s going on. Guess he dosen’t know the repug base at all huh?
First read Dick Gregory’s “N*****” years ago. The chapter ‘Not poor, just broke’ is mandatory reading for everybody.
Maintaining one’spide and self respect while eating school glue in the coat closet and being “one of those who take the welfare coats”.
Mandatory.

Dick Gregory’s “N*****” is mandatory reading.
The chapter ‘Not poor, just broke’ (and the rest of the book) gives new meaning to what self respect encompasses, and gives a glimse of the possibilties of what be.
His memories of eating school glue in the coat closet and being ‘one of those welfare children’ who will get a plaid coat – sleeping 6 in a bed – fighting over one egg –
And then becoming a compassionate human and focused comedian. Most of us can only hope.
This man has my utmost respect 30 years after my original read of the book.

Dick Gregory rules…I know he has a reputation of being nuts (no pun intended), but I saw him speak at Georgetown University back in the 70s and he was brilliant. He was way ahead of the food system enlightenment that exists now. I’m not sure we’d be here without Dick Gregory.
¡:o) I bet Ms. Morrison will never tell!
And that’s the truth!!
It’s that skunk weed he’s smokin’. No buzz, just delusions masquerading as one.
This is truly a wonderful post to know that Mr. Gregory is alove, well and making a difference in our lives. Thank you Dick and Jane…no pun intended.
