Just got this. Oddly enough, Obama’s obvious lack of patriotism isn’t an issue for Senator Dodd.
We have been through a lot in this past year and your friendship and support have meant so much to me. That is why I wanted to let you know of my decision to endorse a Democratic candidate for President – and that I have decided to support Barack Obama.
We all understand how much is at stake in this election and that it is more important than ever that we put a Democrat in the White House.
And while both of our Party’s remaining candidates are extremely talented and would make excellent commanders-in-chief, I am throwing my support to the candidate who I believe will open the most eyes to our shared Democratic vision.
I’m deeply proud to be the first 2008 Democratic presidential candidate to endorse Barack Obama. He is ready to be President. And I am ready to support him – to work with him and for him and help elect him our 44th President.
Put simply, I believe Barack Obama is uniquely qualified to help us face this housing crisis, create good jobs, strengthen America’s families in this 21st century global economy, unite the world against terrorism and end the war in Iraq – and perhaps most importantly, call the American people to shared service and sacrifice. In this campaign, he has drawn millions of voters into politics for the first time in their lives and shown us that we are united by so much more than that which divides us.
That is why I believe the time has come for Democrats to come together as a Party and focus on winning the general election. The stakes are too high not to.
The last seven years have been as difficult as any I can remember. More than ever, we need a President who will inspire us to take part in the political process and change our country’s path.
Today, when we need it most, we are hearing a new call from Barack Obama. And I hope you, like me, will answer it in the affirmative.

Yo bt!
Very nice. Senator Dodd was my first choice. And i’m happy with his endorsement. Yeay, team
Dodd! Department of Democratic Defense
EPU’d for Raven: http://firedoglake.com/2008/02…..nt-1298478
Just got his letter! BT!
Thanks, here’s the direct link
gotta pimp my McCow!
Well, group, does this endorsement hold any weight for you?
Yes, I really value Dodd on constitutional issues.
dude. McCow is awesome!
you rock.
I can’t wait to see the Clinton camp spin it!
Pimp away, tw3k!!
May I put that up at my place later today? I want to make one, and take a picture of it….
:) McMoooooooooooooo!
Hey, that’d be great!
I don’t have a printer, heh.
Great McCow – i may print it out and put on seder table when we get to plagues and cattle afflicted
and i got my Dodd letter, too!
THe rest of the party has to be worried at the tone of the race. This may be the first negative fallout from Clinton’s “Five-point attack.” The Clinton campaign may benefit from launching “a ‘kitchen sink’ fusillade against Mr. Obama” (NYT) but the Democratic Party will not. And that’s got to be the decision Penn, et al., have made: by going negative they’re ready to take on Obama and the party itself in order to win the primary. Risky, but we’ll see if it wins them the nomination.
Hillary’s becoming a bit isolated in the Senate, no?
fucking genius!!!!
Love it!
selise, let’s start making cows!
thanks everyone :D
Feel free to print/e-mail/post w/e the McCow!
oh, wait – one son might not appreciate genius when he sees it.
I can’t remember a time I disagreed with something Dodd was saying, so it carries weight for me.
TPM has an interesting video from Clinton supporter Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio where she defends the Drudge leak of the picture, and then she says “I have no shame or no problem with people looking at Barack Obama in his, uh, native clothing, the clothing of his country.”
Tell me she honestly thinks his country is Somalia. I dare you.
I disagree with Dodd somewhat IRT the war but he is right on with constitutional issues with me!
I’ll go out on a limb and say people are not buying what she is selling.
(printing)
Mad McCow Disease
(not so sure i am this good with scissors)
Same. I think this is an important endorsement for progressives.
Amy Walters of Hotline wondered aloud if Dodd is on the short list for VP
You’re allowed scissors?
I guess it’s possible, also, that he just believes what he said.
Dodd for VP is fantastic. But we will need a lion in the senate to help out old lion Teddy
Hillary can roar
Not so long as his replacement would be named by an R governor named Rell. If he couldn’t be the prez nominee, he needs to stay in the Senate.
lol! “Mad McCow Disease” good one!
Got Dodd’s letter as well!
What an embarrassment.

Good point buuuut Dodd would be good in the “4th branch”
Just tuned this in, it came from Neil over at emptywheel’s

Hil is WAY beyond embarrassment.
Yes. Talk about disingenuous. I think one of Dodd’s points was that it’s time for this to come to an end. I hope Texas/Ohio end it before there are to many Democrats doing things which are close to unforgivable.
Chris Dodd is one of the first Democratic senators to become a vertebrate this congress, and an honorable man, and incidentally my own senator. This endorsement is especially meaningful in consequence.
Sorry, that referred to MarcC @ 24, regarding Stephanie Tubbs Jones.
Dodd’s endorsement doesn’t really change my mind about anything, but is a good sign, I think. I’m hoping the clinton campaign can avoid doing too much damage as it fails. I’d like to see Sen C well positioned as an honest public servant in the Senate — we’ll need all the help we can get to dig out of this bush hole. and i certainly don’t want to give the thugs any more ammo than they’ll steal in the coming months…
Yeah, Senator Clinton might make a good senator if she isn’t voting with the presidency in mind.
Seven years ago Billary made a calculated choice that they weren’t really exercised about Dubya winning the White House. How bad could it get in eight years? And then HillaBill could come in after eight years building a resume in the Senate.
How bad could it get? Guess we see now.
And some pictures freeze-frame in my mind from that time. Like Bushie sittin’ fireside sayin’ he didn’t have a problem with dictatorships as long as he got to be dictator. And Hillary swanning in and budging in line ahead of my Senator during the swearing-ins.
Payback’s a…interesting thing.
And I’ve made a calculated choice for ‘08.
Elliott,
You can get in touch with me at rosannecahn at aol dot com.
I guess I just don’t see where any of this gives ammo to the pukes. They will leave no stone unturned and, in the long run, these spats won’t mean shit. She will jump as ugly as she can but when the dust settles they’ll patch it up. It’s all bullshit.
Nah –
I just really think it was dumb – in the same category as that supporter needled by Chris Matthews who couldn’t think of a single thing Obama had accomplished…
She was way too unguarded to be doing that kind of Dana Perino thing. “His native country?” Just real dumb. How is that not embarrasing enough?
Yup, I got an email from Dodd too. Promtly unsubscribed from any future mailings from him.
I all ready cast my vote in the primary in Wisconsin for Hillary Clinton. If Obama is the candidate in November I will happily vote Green.
I want my letter! Yahoo is slow for me some days. Is that the entire text of the letter? I would have expected a mention of the Constitution, especially since Obama mentioned it in his slap-down of the lapel pin BS.
On Washington Journal this morning, quite a few callers called in all concerned about Obama being part of Louis Farrakhan’s group and they all cited the turban picture. Just pure racist…just disgusting…pure ignorance. So, Rove’s whisper and perhaps phone campaign is in full swing.
ABSOLUTELY! He had me at “filibuster”!
But I was for Obama anyway. This is sweeeeeeet!
thanks eCAHN, I put you in my address book. Hope you guys can hook up with katymine. And I trust the skiing is good?
Dodd carries weight with me. I’d like to see him as AG – he’d kick some serious ass.
Love Dodd. He’d make a great VP.
Kenosha Marge, aw, come on! be a team player!
Some hosts are quick to point out those claims are bogus, was disappointed that this morning’s host let the calls stand without correcting. He was slipped a note about Obama’s website tho. Wasn’t enough considering the number of calls imo.
I agree, and I think he said Kenya not Somalia…did you catch that?
To be fair, the same might be said of Senator Obama.
I have have high expectations that he will represent me better as my President than he has as my Senator.
I should say that I have High Hopes
true.
Dodd for Senate Leader!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn’t see it. Do you know who the host was this morning?
If you email me, I’ll put you on the list for future NYC FDL meetups.
Skiing is spectacular. Alta possibly to set another record snowfall this year after last year’s (or the year before, I forget) record.

This could be really big news out of the UK on the origins of the Iraq war:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..482/464281
Aha! Another who is not thrilled about BO.
I agree that alot of this is campaign theater. That it gets people riled up is somewhat the point. Ted Kennedy was forever bounced as a possible Democratic nominee (for other reasons) but he has done a whole lot of good as a Senator. He is also a favorite raging-point of the right wing.
I didn’t particularly want Hillary to run for President, but I certainly want the Democratic party to make good use of her abilities.
Clutch your pearls!
Speaking of Dodd-related topics, has anyone else had trouble loading Matt Browner-Hamlin’s blog today (www.holdfastblog.com)? It’s not working for me today.
no, I missed that one
Looks down from here too.
Wow, I hope everyone that can is listening to the email hearing. They are asking about Rove’s RNC account, etc.
omgroflmao
the host was the man who always did the callins after debates and speeches, he only just recently started hosting on Washington Journal. He used to be just a voice.
Only cspan1 here and my machine is too slow to stream it :/
WOW eCAHN, nice! I’m the one inside by the fire btw
Think of all the Supremes changing our country for generations.
I know who you mean. Thanks. I was just trying to guess, in my view, whether the oversight would have been lack of competence or bias. I have my opinions regarding the hosts.
It isn’t on CSPAN – the link is at comment #39 upthread, good luck.
Still no joy, that would still cspan’s infrastructure, right?
Hey Senator Dodd, mind if I vote first before you demand party unity?
clueless, party of one
On the subject of patriotism:
I’ve been informed that Vice President Dastardly Dick will be visiting Fort Hood Texas today.
I was also informed that on this Saturday past, tooops at da Hood were charged with erecting a formidable barrier within the perimeter of the compound, complete with camouflage, in preparation for the “visit”.
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you, that such protection would be necessary on the grounds of a US Military installation.
Certainly better protection than Obama received in Dallas last week.
Emptywheel is liveblogging it.
Sounds more like bunker mentality than patriotism.
Ah, cool, thanks!
Not working here either. Looks like holdfastblog is having Web server problems.
The cammy is probably for a backdrop, not protection
Good moring, Blue Texan. Are you in the pink this morning? It’s nice to wake up to some good news for a change.
Dodd is a thoughtful person. He didn’t arrive at this decision willy nilly but with some serious preponderance. When Chris Dodd speaks, I listen!
I pay attention to the organization Obama has put together and he does a formidable job. I am expecting as much on his appointed team in the future.
I have so many placed where Chris Dodd is needed that would make a powerful difference and turn this country around. Can we clone him? I’ve offered him from Secretary of State to Vice President in my fantasies.
The only way I think that the Republicans will be able to use any of Hillary’s recent attacks are by things like “Even Senator Clinton says you are not prepared to be President…” etc. I’m not so sure that is going to be a convincing argument to Independents and cross-over Republicans who don’t consider Hillary much of an expert on anything…except her own distinctive brand of Rovian politics.
Sadly, what Hillary is doing now is rapidly extracting herself from
a) the ability to influence Superdelegates, as even if she “wins” she would not be able to unify the party under a Clinton-Obama ticket, and
b) being a potential Vice-Presidential candidate, or member of the Cabinet, herself. Her rhetoric may, in fact, taint her in her own, future Senatorial campaigns. I was thinking that Obama might even consider her for a Supreme Court position, but her groundless attacks by innuendo have even harmed THAT possibility.
She’s apparently taken really bad advice from those in her campaign (or her own worst inner voices) and decided to play dirty-politics. With every statement by her myrmidons it has become clear that Drudge did, indeed, receive the photos from a Clinton campaign official. Some are even using the plausible deniability statements to protect themselves from the fall-out. The old “I am not aware…or I WASN’T aware of…”ploy without actually making a categorical denial.
And here’s another attack, issued the same day as the Judge in the Rezko case revealed that Obama was NOT “Government Official ‘A’” who received over a million in campaign contributions from a foreign firm associated with Rezko. Turns out that the “Government Official” was actually the Republican Governor, Blojogavich. But somehow The Times OnLine publishes the article stating that the judge sent Rezko to jail for fear he’d jump bail, and mentions all the other particulars of Fitz’s indictment, but fails to note the critical statement by the judge revealing that Obama isn’t Mr. “A”.
Obama’s not even mentioned in the indictment as being associated with any criminal activity. Yet the Times (London) calls Rezko “Obama’s Bagman”! In America that means the guy who holds the illegal goods until the heat is off the thief (and in the Brit context it simply means a “travelling salesman”…so doesn’t make a whit of sense in that usage). IANAL But I’d think that this is libelous under British law.
My source used a distinct military term for the structure.Unfortunately, I cannot recall it.
Will check with him again. He was given the day off.
Thanks for that :). There will be McCow’s at the local pub soon…
Remember the Supreme Court should be the rallying cry of Democratic unity.
(And I don’t even consider myself a real Dem)
Erm

For the record.
Blagojevich is a Democrat.

Interesting. Maybe they’ll also have something in it about how the claims about the Niger “yellowcake” transactions got entered into the Government “White Paper”. The Brits have been very tight-mouthed about just who was MI6’s source and claiming that it wasn’t the same source as that which passed on the info to the CIA. But that’s not the issue. The question is whether the materials came ULTIMATELY (not through cut-outs) from the same tainted source, and whether they bothered to vet the information sufficiently to discover that. The fact that they had the same details suggested highly that they did come from the same original documentation. If one was forged both sets were likely bogus.
Hi folks…
I’ll never forget that day when Sen. Dodd was on the Senate floor eloquently and so bravely trying to implore the rest of the Senate regarding this FISA reform fiasco.
His argument was so intelligent, compelling, and just plain heartbreaking.
Because the vast majority of the Senate was not swayed by the rule of law or the constitution part of his speech.
I believe that was Sen. Dodd’s finest moment because he took a stand despite the odds.
Oops! Sorry about that.
That is why I believe the time has come for Democrats to come together as a Party and focus on winning the general election. The stakes are too high not to.
Hint, hint, Hillary, it’s time!
Was this covered in MSM? Hmm could be why I haven’t heard much on this as of late?
I was thinking that with his legal acumen (and his fathers pedigree) he would be a wonderful choice for the Supremes. Two seats (at least) are likely to be open within the next few years, so it’s imperative that we win this election for our Constitutions sake. Dodd is the foremost champion of the Constitution in the Senate IMO.
This house refers to gooper judges as “Ideologue judges”
Dodd is a man of total integrity. His endorsement says a lot. Hillary should conceded gracefully. Dems should come together and win this.
In fairness to Blagojevich, I thought he would be indicted by now.
I want to cast my vote first please.
The judge only recently (Friday, IIRC) allowed the names in the indictment to be revealed publicly. It’s been getting press in Chicago, but not so much nationally. McCain’s troubles with the NYT and Hillary’s troubles with Obama seemed to have sucked up most of the MSM’s attention.
I think his wife will be indicted first.
We have a strong heritage of bi-partisan corruption here in Illinois.
(We also have some pretty good Senators from time to time)
There is only one little problem with this plan, McCain has even more to expose. If he wants to play the nasty game, well, all’s fair in …… I don’t think little Cindy is going to feel very good about Big Daddy playing nasty with the girlies. They will come crawling out of the woodwork. McCain’s head will spin and not one word has to come out of the Obama camp. Obama can stay above the fray.
Don’t mess with the People.
Oh, thanks for the info.
If she had gotten Kenya and Somalia mixed up, perhaps.
If she had mixed up the fact that his biological father was born in Africa with the idea that he had been born in Africa, maybe.
Even if she has mistakenly said that a naturalized US citizen’s country was not the US, a remote possibility.
But her statements that he was wearing “the clothing of his country” and then later “the cothing of his nation” requires her to make all three mistakes at the same time.
That seems to me highly unlikely for an intelligent person like the Representative.
You, and probably the Lt. Gov. too: “Which office is mine today?”
I understand you want to vote. I think Dodd’s letter only went to those on his correspondence list and he didn’t demand that Hillary drop out now. He just stated that he recommended Democrats unify. We’re all entitled to an opinion.
thanks.
and “McCain’t” is fun too.
I have a picture of an assembled McCow here.
Hillary should conceded gracefully. Dems should come together and win this.
no.
we can use the drama of the race to promote the democrats, extend their coverage, get more air time for their message(s).
THEN we can do the big kumbuya routine.
AhHAHAHA, looks even better than I thought it would, thx :)
you are wicked smart, dude.
fun too.
Okay, BT, you have to go with Dodd because you’ve never disagreed before.
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you know what you believe better than some one else.
But, aside from everyone here being geniuses and all, and also getting the same email…
I don’t see what the point is of being the first candidate to support Obama?
And, further, I have to disagree that this is the point in the election to make a supportive declaration. Unless he’s really supporting Hillary’s fund, and feels like she should back out now and save her do-re-e.
Like alot of folks, I’m glad for Obama’s voice bringing out a huge amount of young folks. But, like some folks, I wonder at giving the flavor du jour crowd that much Voice.
There have been other leaders who rallied the youth, only to bring a lot of mayhem and misery on the world.
Sorry to be contrary to The Tribe. I’m just trying to be honest.
Maybe Obama should make use of his Saturday Night Live appearance to mock some of these folks. He could appear in some skit with “Bill Clinton” where there is a Hawaiian luau, with Bill dressed up like Col. Sanders and Obama in surf-gear, big redwood stick and flowered shirt. Bill asks Obama why he’s dressed up that way…and Obama says “It’s the clothing that we usually wear in the land of my birth…Hawaii.” Bill says “Same here, amigo!”
Maybe another couple could mock the whole “He’s a covert Muslim” issue.
OT But some new polls are out. Warning: these are usually based upon DEMOCRATS and Democratic leaners in the primary matchups, but the NYT used actual voters in the Primaries and caucuses or those that stated they would be voting in them…thus likely includes Independents and some Republicans.
CBS/NYTimes
has Obama up 54%-38% nationwide to Clinton [that’s a 16% turnaround since January 30th; and a 31% turnaround since early January]
That same poll shows BO vs. McCain 50%-38% and HC vs. McCain tied 46% each.
USA Today/Gallup is similar: Obama 51% vs. 39% Clinton [turnaround 9% since 2/8; 22% since 1/30] That survey shows both candidates virtually even with McCain.
and AP/Ipsos
Shows a tighter primary race nationally Obama 46%-43% Clinton [but with similar momentum towards Obama 8% over the last two weeks and 24% since January].
In that one Obama leads McCain by 10% (51-41%) and Clinton leads McCain 48%-43%.
A Gallup Poll of Democrats also shows Obama only slightly ahead of Clinton 47%-45% but with momentum heading for Obama (+15% from 2/5 and +34% since 1/24].
All of these surveys were conducted late last week and over the weekend.
You must be pro-life and supporting a long-term engagement in Iraq?
Figures that Mr. Insurance Industry, Chris Dodd, would endorse Obama the DLC’s candidate.
Maybe a reward to Obama for excluding a government health insurance option from his non-universal health care proposal.
Gee, could it be that the for profit health insurance industry is excited about Obama economic advisor David Cutler’s ideas about keeping health care industry profits as high as possible.
Birds of a feather and all that.
The DLC leadership team.
If Clinton concedes, I guarantee that there will be no coming together until Obama apologizes and has the media apologize for the disgraceful way he has both promoted and taken advantage of subtle sexist propaganda.
No, it will be a long time before many of us forget how Obama and his collaborators pushed back the accomplishments and aspirations of women by 40 years. Enjoy it while you can. It will be a pyrrhic victory and we are going to watch from the sidelines until the last possible moment.
Got my letter from Dodd too. I have admired Dodd for his activism in the Senate on issues I cared about while others were sitting on their thumbs. So, his endorsement means something to me.
I am surprised that Dodd with his presumed sense of history should join in the inspiration parade and overlook content.
Does he really approve the choice of Carter’s Bryzinski as a premiere foreign relations advisor? Hey, isn’t that the guy in the picture with the gun in the wilds of Afganistan with his favorite and well-funded men from the Taliban(!) This is inspiring?? we should all find it very nerve-wracking.
I supported Dodd before I supported Obama, so I am quite pleased. Anything that can accelerate the demise of the comedy that is now the Clinton campaign is most welcome.
I received the same letter, and this was my reply (slightly edited).
I do not agree, and will continue to support Hillary R. Clinton[SNIP]
Throughout this race, I have done considerable reading of MSM, non-MSM, and original sources with regard to all candidates. Quite frankly, Barack H. Obama is not as qualified, and in some very critical cases his political behavior belies his Kumbya message.
Also, I find that many of his supporters share at least a couple of the the following: have failed to vote until now; voted and/or supported Bush in the past; never participated in activities opposing the behavior of the Republishits; never wrote to a politician or publication during these dark years; continue to believe or be influenced by political and media innuendos and falsehoods about Clinton; seem to be seeking some internal cleansing and atonement for years of political laziness. [ADD] I failed to mention the most revealing flaw to their new found political fervor. Almost all claim that they might vote McCain or a third party, if HRC wins the primary. This shows the shallowness of their thinking, and indicates how little they might be relied on regardless of which Democratic candidate is nominated.
I will not hitch my wagon to a show pony.
Outstanding! Now if we could just get Edwards to follow suit this week…
Er, Obama’s not in the DLC.
Senator Dodd is a terrific senator and politician and his timing here is excellent.
Unless something extremely out of the norm occur it appears the trend is toward Obama and with his current lead this appears insurmountable.
So, Dodd is placing his huge wager on a pretty sure bet.
Still, calling for the faithful to rally ’round the most popular candidate is what someone of his position needs to do.
Probably the more appropriate ‘native costume’ for Obama would be colorful shorts and maybe flipflops. In Hawaii they dress casually when they go to the beach and for lots of other occasions.
I’ve heard that if the nominee was Clinton someone might be disappointed because she isn’t very Liberal and that would cause someone to vote Green. But, your way around leaves me confused.
Don’t you see Clinton as the more Conservative of those two? Hmmm. Another case of Obama leaving people utterly confused and clueless about where he really stands politically.
Yep. He made me proud to be a Democrat. Too bad there are so many numb-skulls in the senate who didn’t heed his call. Thank God for whomever in the House found a way to kill it.
Being a West Virginian I have to come to the rhetorical side of Senator Byrd. Before this FISA bill he had been widely regarded as THE authority. Maybe his days in the senate are coming to an end — I think Dodd would beat him in a foot race without any difficulty.
Don’t diss the decisions and policies of the Cold Warriors. They felt a lot of pressure to get the job done.
However, I do wonder whether Brzyzinski is right for this era. Unless you know the man and have heard his ideas it’s hard to even guesstimate whether he’s right for today. The same pretty much goes for any carry-overs from earlier administrations. Heck, it’s even one of the key reasons to label Hillary as the past and not support her.
Who are other carry-overs Obama has already put on his team?
