Hillary had a good open and very strong close. She tried to ding Obama on the speech thing and health care, but I'm not sure she landed any real punches. Obama didn't make any mistakes and did a good job deflecting Hillary's (few) attempts to really engage 1-on-1.
My bottom line: I didn't see a major Obama mistake tonight, and though Hillary did well, she also got booed when she went after the "plagairism" thing, which was kind of clumsy.
I score it a narrow win for Obama, who settled down after a slightly nervous start.

Tie!
doh!
Agree, BT.
I would have said “zed!’ but that would have been plagiarism.
Fitz!
Dems won … either of the two are far, far better than what the Repugs offer …
Hillary’s last comment was strong and that is what some will choose to remember. Maybe because of the cynic in me, I felt that it was contrived.
Betsy, glad things are better. Phone on the night stand just in cae…
The momentum has been with Obama, so something big would have had to happen to change that.
Can I quote you on that without attribution?
Ding
X - X won!
On Countdown, Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee saying Clinton’s health program has “saved the lives of millions of children” — um, NO.
Want to say that? Let’s see some proof.
Rachel’s on MSNBC now! Hooray!
Greetings from Austin!
The discussion between me and my sweetie is that although we would happily vote for either in the general election, Obama is the one we choose between two of them.
Really good discussion tonight.
Of course it was contrived, but it wasn’t Xeroxed.
Did you and I see the same debate????
She wound his clock!
He..meandering…platitudes…
She..focused on issues…making points
and, her finish just nailed it for her.
It was hard to pick a winner for me between Obama and Clinton, with lots of good answers back and forth between them for two hours straight — even to some less-than-stellar questions.
On the other hand, there’s Senator McCain (h/t Detroit News):
No reason? “Nothing to see here. Move along, move along . . .”
Tonight reinforced my conviction that either one will eat McCain for lunch in the fall debates.
The Bush legacy. Every President is allowed one Pearl-Habor type of attack on America and will be considered heroic.
Right?
wow. Christy, you echoed my assessment to the T! I think this one goes to Obama, he did not get booooed, he did not make any slams or digs at Clinton. She came off really well, however. And LOOKED so much better than she has of late. I hope that Obama will win Texas and Ohio, and if and when he does, I PRAY she can be gracious enough to concede with class! This does NOT need to carry on to Denver!
the american people won. and the dems.
lololol
I agree BT
She was good but didnt make the “kill”
Her last statement maybe conceded that she didnt.
Again Obama is special and unusual, a once in a life time opportunity.
We havent see it for 40 odd years
That would be the Texas Two Step, no?
Considering Obama has not been the best at past debates and he had a cold tonight.. I thought it was pretty much a draw.
Hillary sounds stronger on health care and Barack stronger on ending war and occupations.
You listen to Jimi?
Did you get the Xe*ox Corporation’s permission to use that trademark in that fashion?
I am so looking forward to Obama’a concession speech!
I am so ready to move on from this primary
Hullooo fellow Austinite!
I don’t think it mattered all that much. So Hillary lost. Even if she won.
BT, from the last thread —- I believe that it is te president’s first reponsibilty to keep us safe. I say that because the Congress and Judiciary all have significant roles to play in protecting the Constitution. Much less so with our safety. At least that’s what I think. The Constitution will be OK.
Blue Texan you are right!…as usual
and lately Shiela Jackson lee has been sounding like a wind-up robot,
she has reduced herself to a 4th rate spin-meistress, it is disturbing to me, shje used ot be one of my fav’s
Bush can take a punch and never miss a line while reading “My Pet Goat”.
Whatta man, and good riddance.
Uh, that would be Blue Texan, not Christy.
No, I borrowed it from Hil.
another austinite! yay! welcome.
Hillary makes Obama look like he’s just too young to handle the job. She speakshi in rounded sentences, totally in command of the facts, and without hesitation. He mispeaks, repeats himself, and loses the point. She is presidential!
Uh…don’t think ya gonna see that…but we shall see.
Now a days we use photocopy. No longer xerox
oooops. my SORRRRY! sorry, BT! that’s what i get for speed reading thru the post so I can catch up with the comments!
my bad.
I listen to Jimi.
Senator Clinton won the debate tonight. She is just more masterful on the specific issues.
I don’t know about all that…the first Kerry/Bush debate in 04-that was winding a clock. Bentsen/Quayle in ‘88. This was two brilliant, committed idealists, with differeing reasons for preferring one over the other. A one-sided mauling? No way.
I think the American people won. Either candidate will provide us all with a huge step up from the current Preznit McSmirk, and will save us from Saint McVain.
Hillary is very impressive. But this time ’round, she’s a loser. The best thing she could do for the sake of the party and the country would be to drop out and release her delegates and let Obama and everyone else focus on John “More of the Same” McCain.
I must commend MSNBC for its decision to make a rescheduled “Countdown” its post-debate analysis vehicle. I don’t miss Tweety one bit.
McCain is not to be feared and is virtually irrelevant.
Hate to spoil it..but tweety is on at 11
Interesting in that both of the debate “winners” you reference (and I do not disagree) subsequently lost their respective elections.
Ack.
Brain bleach to my appetite centers, stat!
I hate to say this, but…
DITTO!
fork
There have been numerous debates involving these two. And Obama has won more delegates and far more states. This debate wasn’t somehow radically different from the others.
AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!
What do you mean “lately”? I saw her on Real Time once. She’s bright but sometimes she acts like a real ijit.
Rachel: “that stupid Xerox comment”…LOL
Hi there and welcome! We love seeing new folks here at the Lake!
so, did i miss much?
(don’t answer that!)
* i am not a ditto head
Betsy - hope your night is peaceful and you feel well soon. Good you have TexTeen and Wangdangdoodle and LS keeping their ears open.
I’m off to get ready for sleep and (yuck) work tomorrow.
heh
I want to know which operative wrote the zerox line for Clinton. (assuming one did, and it didn’t just come from her)
I think we were watching different debates possibly in a different decade.
Yeah, I noticed that too…they just happened to be the two most dominating debate performances I could quickly think of.
night tejanarusa.
i will be fine. just playing it safe.
Is “ditto” the punctuational equivalent of “xerox”?
Mondale-Reaga I. Tne one where Nancy got mad because they tried to get Ronnie prepared and it confused him. I actually felt sorry for Reagan that night he was so pathetic. But it was scary that that guy was president and you knew would be again. Scary.
Hmmm…I got really pissed off about the Xerox comment, which is probably attributable to her “script” as, ironically, provided by her advisors, followed by some really condescending comments..I didn’t like that at all. It came off as mean. She’s better than that. She’s better than her advisors. She invoked McCain at the end…wrong!
Obama was, in my humble opinion, not feeling well..a little off..but still brilliant, as is HRC, but his passion and brilliance always shines…he’s speaking of something different…something that can happen in our country in our lifetime…something that has been gone from our country…since 11/22/63. I feel that from him. It is a kind of healing energy for all peoples. It is different than anything I’ve ever heard since then.
That is his magic, and that is just my humble opinion….and its implications scare me too. He has raised my hopes…and that scares me. I want to be pragmatic, but I’m not. He is brave, and so is Hillary.
hi selise. did you watch at all?
Mrs. K8- I agree with you completely. I kinda suspect that anyone who calls it a win or lose for O or C is seeing it through their own particular preference lens.
And, btw, can I just put a can of Coke in the toilet, or do I need to pop the tab and pour in the contents first? ;)
Mandy Gruenwald is my guess.
I wonder what project(s) David Schuster is working on?
ditto
MrsK8! long time no see!
Penn, penned it…! ;-)
Just in case, I’m closest and have the cel standing by.
Full disclosure: that was not my original thought. I studied it in a course once.
You can say that again.
not one bit.
Thanks. I was listening to Jimi and he played over Pat Buchanan. Jimi made a lot more sense than Pat.
If MSNBC doesn’t put him back on soon, they will deserve to loose him to another network.
He’s not going to have trouble getting an equal job.
My mom is furious with Obama. She says it’s Senator Clinton’s turn and if he wins the primary she will not vote at all for President.
Any firepups feel they could not vote for the “other” candidate?
yes maam wangdang. cell phone is charged and at my side.
Of course not!
You’re a wangdangdoodle-head! :-)
[Reminds me of just the sort of expression my little nephew would love. When kids are of that age when they play with making new words for the sheer sound and fun of it, it cracks me the hell up. But then, it cracks THEM up, too, which is more the point of it.]
Beautifully said
What Betsy said
So did Mondale. But he actually got a bounce out of that 1st debate. Reagan scared people that night. I don’t think McCain will be that bad.
I didn’t read the posts from earlier today. Did anyone here say anything about his affair with that lobbyist chick?
BT, I think you described it very well. Clinton showed her usual debate strengths - plusa strong opening and great close - but also looked petty and water-testing with the Xerox attack stuff. Obama is becoming a more effective debater, both rhetorically and in terms of policy details and clear, confident (but not nasty) rebuttals. The audience seemed to be just a touch more on his side. A draw, perhaps… but since it was a not a knockout (and no gaffes), probably the momentum just keeps on going for Obama.
I guess we’ll find out Tuesday…
oilfieldguy, i would gladly vote for either in the general but plan to vote for obama on the 4th
No
The highpoint of the night belonged to Hillary. The low point of the night belonged to Hillary.
Obama was steady throughout and that’s all he needed to do.
Both overall did a wonderful job. I would call it a draw, but when considering the current state of the race a draw translates to a win for Obama and his momentum may now carry him to a win in Texas.
The fast track to tenure. :)
Just kidding.
Pat rarely makes sense. And when he does, it fucks with my head.
We’re on the same page…again.
from EPUville: Scrambling back and forth between “real life” and the lake sometimes does not for clarity make….
No.
Nope. And I can’t for the life of me understand how anyone can feel that way.
Um…the latter approach is more effective. :-)
And then a quick brushing in the a.m. finishes it off.
Good to see you and all the other fine pupster regulars (and new pups!) ’round the lake this evening.
Smooches and hugs!!!
LOL–
Is the RNC sending emails to Rachel Mawddow mistakenly blaming Obama for one of Clinton’s statements?
McCain said it wasn’t true.
He also said at one time that torture was wrong. Then he changed his positon.
Straight talk, you know.
Howdy, pal! Good to see your smiling face (in a virtual sense, of course).
I was so mad at Obama for his praise of Reagan that I said I wasn’t going to vote for him. But I think I’ll give him one more chance. But if he says one more comment about the Pukes being the “party of ideas” I just won’t vote for president next year.
One thing I can’t stand is a Lieberman-Daschle-Gephart-Bob Kerrey type democrat.
She says it’s Senator Clinton’s turn
The Republican Party nominates the guy whose “turn” it is. The Dem Party thankfully does not.
just remember:
Remember, Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
[Shawshank Redemption, Andy, as played by Tim Robbins, written by Stephen King, produced by…. *g*]
Pat can surprise you. He’ll talk like a complete paleo-conservative; and then say something right, for all the right reasons.
Fucks with my head too.
Rachel Mawddow is SUCH a breath of fresh air in MSM. THANK GOD! NO helmet hair! kewl.
Howdy, Blue Texan!
Know what really bothers nme about HRC? Just one of things that annoys me. The way she claps along with the crowd at her rallies. Not the fact that she does it. But the way she does it. Looks really goofy. I could never vote for her.
I am a Clinton supporter, but I feel that anyone who believes in Senator Clinton and what she represents MUST support and vote for whichever Democratic wins the nomination. If you believe in the ideals of the Democratic Party, then it is imperative to do whatever you can do—-and at very least vote—to prevent the Republicans from having ANOTHER opportunity to shred our Constitution, spend our treasure, sacrifice lives and ruin the environment of our planet.
I agree. Enough.
Hi, siri…My favorite Scandinavian name…
Wow, Oilfield guy, MrsK8, Valley Gir! Hi everyone.
OldMother is not happy with Obama - thinks he is not nice to Hillary and she is very mad at Michelle for her “for the first time in my adult life” situation. I don’t think she’ll vote for him on the ticket and she’s never not voted and never not voted Dem.
Maddow, not Mawddow!
Whoa! Today is a major anniversary for me.
Three years ago today, I posted my first comment on the old Blogspot version of FireDogLake.
As then, today I was ruminating on Hunter Thompson’s death, and how much he would have enjoyed being here for this amazing political year.
I get your point, but in my opinion that statement is a bit unfair to Daschle, Gephart, and Bob Kerrey.
There is only one Joe Lieberman.
LS –
I absolutely know what you mean. We feel that way in our house, too. Afraid to hope too much, yet longing to hope again.
The ruthless murders of our leaders in the sixties caused wounds which have never healed.
The song “Abraham, Martin, and John” can still make me sob out loud.
THAT’S a strange coincidence! BIODUN is MY favorite name!
:D
I loooove that movie…
We mean what you know.
So, did anyone hear Keith say that Politico.com found an Edwards debate moment just like Hillary’s warm, touching closing tonight?
I agree. One thing we can’t have is a goofy clapper in the Whitehouse!
Wow! Two other SoCal pups! Hey Mommybrain and OC!!!
Not in this house!
