I don't know about the allegations of sexual impropriety on the part of John McCain. The dude's a former Naval Aviator, and those guys are famous for their chastity and propriety, just look at Randy "Duke" Cunningham for goodness sake. "Huggy Bear" himself has always been a model of proper behavior when it comes to fidelity issues.
May I just take a moment here to half-heartedly proclaim that I've always been really proud of my country?
Thanks.
Moving on, for someone of the Maverick's advanced years, these sort of things, um, often pose "engineering" problems. My memory is fuzzy from the late 90s but I'm pretty sure that back then in order to fix this situation you had to throw a ball through a tire. Now, of course, science has advanced to the point -- and again I'm not an expert on these matters (not to brag) -- where erectile dysfunction is resolved by forming a cover band with your middle-aged male friends or sitting in adjoining tubs overlooking the Grand Canyon. These simple and practical solutions were not available nearly a decade ago.
But I digress, because the alleged sex scandal is not actually a sex scandal, it's an influence scandal, the world's second oldest profession.
McCain's friend was a lobbyist before a committee he chaired and he may have gone to bat (so to speak, sorry) for her clients using his role as Chairman.
And, as Digby and Lerxst point out, the key paragraph in the New York Times story is this one:
“Unless he gives you special treatment or takes legislative action against his own views, I don’t think his personal and social relationships matter,” said Charles Black, a friend and campaign adviser who has previously lobbied the senator for aviation, broadcasting and tobacco concerns.
Oh, that's rich, rich indeed.

Zeditty doo dah…
Good Morning….
Ever heard of Tailhook?
Aren’t we forgetting something?
IOKIYAR
This story will fade away quickly, people.
Attaturk…
That presser at 9 AM ET should be interesting, eh?
Morning Joe is staying with the story exclusively…
That picture is photoshopped.
Wouldn’t exchanging sexual favors for political influence qualify as prostitution and therefore, be the world’s oldest profession?
Was McCain a “tail gunner”?
He already has the votes of the Viagra crowd, so why’s he doing this?
I’m staying on the story as well–as a freelancer…*g*
Of course it’s photoshopped! That’s McCains now famous Bush Hug!
Awesome job Watertiger!
McCain: Sure, we had sex, but only in the missionary position. And that was a few years ago, when I wasn’t quite so old, so it wasn’t as gross as it sounds now.
Perhaps..*g* /snark
Good Morning Attaturk!
Again and again it seems that the American government on all level is susceptible to corruption. It doesn’t matter how much power a person has he would find the way to misuse it to some degree.
It is not that all officials are bad but when so much capital and so much political power gathers in such a small sized group, one can’t expect the political’ economical and social conduct of people to be free from interest.
It is a shame that in a country that understood the importance of separation of powers on the formal level, there is so little of this on the actual level of political and economical power.

McCain on the news, of course. I have a question from the threads yesterday. With the list of telecoms, is there a way to know what lobbyists’ money goes to a particular Senator? Or, does it take forever? In the FISA context, for instance, how much would Sen. Cornyn and others perhaps been given? Just wondering…thanks
Actually it is a combination of the oldest and second oldest
No BEEF here.
The quote was missing the last part
From Ana Marie Cox:
(I refuse to link her, but what she has to say here is of interest…*g*)
(BTW, strike-out in original…wonder why…hmm…)
So who else has BushCo been manipulating through blackmail? Maybe the question would be more efficiently answered if I asked who isn’t being blackmailed.
Are you saying “Doesn’t it seem as if Vicky Iseman is sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?”
lurking promise broken just to say that the photoshop did more for me than 30 cups of latte. Thanks Attaboy! now to put on the birkenstoks and start up the latte….and go to work.
Our “system” has corruption built in to it and it is destroying our nation.
If we don’t tear this out soon, the thing will completely come un done. The economy was tanked due to the influence of wall street on congress and the neutering of the FTC and other watch dogs groups.
Lobbyists are a branch of government, writing legislation and “designing” earmarks.
Greed and money has completely infected the government from top to bottom. Mc is a perfect example. But there are many many many others. Ask Jack. He knows.
It’s the way things work in the beltway. What happens in the beltway, stays in the beltway, until someone opens their mouth.
I think you can piece it together at opensecrets.org

Some kind of journalistic spat?
Morning pups. I haven’t paid close attention to McCain’s career. Of course, I knew of his involvement with the Keating Five, but other than that nothing more than your average teevee watcher, and I don’t watch teevee. So why was I not surprised to learn that he got his start in politics by marrying a rich heiress? Why do these people all look and have pretty much the same family histories as Jean Schmidt? What is it about the Stepford Heathers?
The thug reps seem on the whole to fall into a fairly standard class of upper middle class twits who have decided to augment their fortunes by feeding from the public trough.
It’s times like this that I really miss T-Rex.
Smartest thing Tucker ever said “If some one is shocked a that a fighter pilot likes women. . .” I repeat, see Tailhook, that is all.
All power to the proletariat!
Knut, TRex is right here on this very story
What on Earth Will Cindy Pills Say She’s Proud of Now?
How does a person with an elementary education degree from a little known college, no legislative experience and no evidence of contacts in government move from entry level typist to partner in a lobbying firm in just a few years?
Just askin’.
Ha, I was born at night but not LAST night. It’s called talent :)
How does an idiot chimp become president of a superpower?
Just askin’.
How DOES lobbying work?
well,
first you open the door to the hotel lobby
and then…
CSPAN is now discussing the polluted oceans study
Actually, that was a serious question. Why is lobbying so lucrative? Is there some sort of % fee based on the economic gain of the firm hiring the lobbyist?
What DO they do, chat up critters? Seriously.
No…it’s personal…I can tell you on Facebook if you want…Just say word…*g*)

Pat Buchanan: “I think the NYT has a lot to answer…”
Buchanan: “If the NYT had run the story before the primaries, McCain wouldn’t have been in the running for the nomination.”
Buchanan: “Rutenberg was gonna run then but Keller held it back.”
BTW, gang:
I’ll live-blog the presser at 9 ET…
Buchanan: “WaPo story has advanced the story beyond the NYT.”
Morning Pups -
The schadenfreude pie is just as good for breakfast, and I got up in time to see Pat Buchanan’s head explode.
Life is good.
Excellent! Thanks.
was there anything in there?
Interesting…Buchanan seems to think that NYT story is legitimate…:
“The Times usually doesn’t do these kinds of stories, so there must be something there…”
Would you like some McToast with that? It’s almost ready.
dana, you have the tail wagging the dog, it’s the other way around;
power corrupts
absolute power corrupts absolutely
I wish I wrote that but I didn’t
Yep…Buchanan agrees there’s something there…
Buchanan calling the two unnamed McCain aides “snakes.”
(BTW, The WaPo names one of them this morning: John Weaver.)
Pretty frackin’ funny, Mr. The Turk!
For me too, my fellow NYU friend..*g*
Schadenfreude alert: Be aware that our collective delight in the McCain flap throws open the gates to political hell. By comparison, it’s been a wee picnic in the park to this point. The snarling dogs are straining at their leashes and they’re gonna be released. Personally, I don’t give a rat’s patoot who’s boinking whom. Or what medication they have to take to boink at all. Or if they’re boinkless in D.C. I know, I know. On the other hand (oh, just don’t go there!), Monica, Vicki. Messy blue dress, lobbyist influence. Hmmm.
Well, well, well…what a lovely morning in the Midwest, the Land of Lincoln! For the first time in my lifetime, I am really, really, really proud to be an American. It’s seeing McSaint squirm a little bit that’s doin’ it for me. :)
And when’s the exorcism of Cindy McSaint? Hell wants their succubus back.
hi there…the morning will be a long one…and it’ll be glorious…
MSNBC now showing a picture of the happy couple…*g*
Poor John. Apparently the FEC wants to talk to him about funding too.
Iseman looks hot…
teh Quote: Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Lord Acton in letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, 3 April 1887 (Oxford concise dictionary of Quotations)
Andrea Mitchell: “Story is complicated..”
They keep saying that…
Watch the tough questions coming up here…
The MSM (in the persona of “Morning Joe” today) is completely ignoring the ethics aspect of this story and are focusing on the sexual aspect, which both McCain and Iseman deny.
McCain speaking now. More later
McCain: “I’m disappointed in the article. it’s not true..”
Bee-hive is back *g*
A Republican sex scandal that doesn’t involve cross dressing, public solicitation, beastiality, wife swapping, bathroom quickies or pedophilia? This story has to be bogus. It’s not your typical Republican MO.
let’s team up here…
McCain: “I’m proud of my record of my service to this country..”
Great entertainment today, the talking heads will be occupied for days on this. Fun to watch Pat Buchanan’s head explode. And Mika saying the NYT is the “gold standard.” Got news for ya, honey,it hasn’t been that for at least 7 years, or since Judith Miller put her slimey hands all over it. More like the “copper” standard, I’d say.
He looks awful, BTW.
McCain is talking about his many friends. No closer to Iseman than any of the others.
He he.
Mccain: “We’re just friends. I have many friends in Washington.
Or is he proud of servicing Ms Lobbyist
McCain: “I don’t anything about whaat John Weaver was saying, John Weaver is a friend of mine…”
I’ve got many lobbyist friends in DC! That’s a winning argument. :)
The story is very simple. Mc was doing the deep for the telcom and she was the kiss face who gave him his marching orders.
all aboard the STRAIGHT PECKER EXPRESS woooooooooooooowoo
“Our “system” has corruption built in to it and it is destroying our nation.”
Which is all the more reason to hope Sen. Obama gets elected. No, it won’t eliminate money from having political influence in Washington, even he admits that, but the way he’s gone about funding his campaign makes him less beholden to lobbyists than anyone else still in the race.
There’s no magic wand to wave that’s gonna make the system pure and chaste, but his election would show there is another way.
McCain:” I’ve flown on many planes. It’s an accepted practice.”
MCCain: “We never tried to stop the NYT from running the story..”
Nuthin but a thang!
Are those scratches on the left side of his face? Just forward of the end of his sideburns.
Oh man, McCain denies discouraging the NY Times Story by saying “I never spoke directly to them”
…um, that’s what Bob Bennett is for.
McCain: : “The campaign wwill continue”
plus Barrak doesnt strike me as one who chases perky willowy blondes, but i could be wrong
McCain: “Nothing to see here, move along, move along…:
The chickens are coming home to roost and they’re shitting all over the Republican Party. They were it well.
NYeve has a post on Kos that says Isemans company’s website has been scrubbed and is not working.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/.....669/461067
Oopsy, I DID speak to the NY Times
an accepted practice?
damn it, I KNEW I didn’t write it but I was hoping I did
Mccain “I know the NYT. I didn’t try to dissuade them from doing the story.”
I don’t find it acceptable for critters to fly in corporate jets.
all this while he was voting for impeachment for the CLENIS,bad Clenis,,Bad Clenis!
McCain keeps saying he’s disappointed. He’s now said that 4-5 times…
The Obama Train is full steam ahead, and I’m not sure anyone really cares about this story. His whole campaign has been about casting aside the politics of old, and this is a classic example of the “gotchya” politics. Whatever the Repubs are doing with this McCan’t story, none of the Obamatrons care. Obama will continue to gain more and more support.
Let those dogs go. It’s just not going to matter anymore. We’re in a new era and the old tricks just don’t work.
Cindy McCain looks pained standing behind him…
think progress has this, puts teh smile on teh face;
I wonder how many depressants McCain had to down before this press conference?
He’s doesn’t want to come out of his pissed off badass bag right now.
McCain: “I haven’t seen Vicki Iseman for some time. I haven’t been in DC.”
Great post.
Children!
but she is teh PROUD,i guess the fall cometh
Buchanan this morning seemed much more upset that the Times had held the story long enough to sink McCain after the primaries, than that they ran the story in the first place.
Cindy is disappointed in the NYT too,
cindy” I’m very disappointed in the NYTimes.”
I cannot see Cindy, who is speaking now…
DOES SHE LOOK PROUD?
Axe his first wife how “stand up” he is.
When is McCain going to blow like Krakatoa?
Why did Iseman remove her bio and website?
you stole me line
McCain says he’s disppointed too…
hahahahahahahaha
She’s trying really hard to look very proud.
Why thank you.
I have so few opportunities to do a series of erectile dysfunction jokes, it was good to get them out of the way. Tres classy.
However, if such a riff lasts more than four hours…
She’s trying to smile but not succeeding very much…
not in his willing pecker of course
Actually I don’t think he’s doing that badly, especially compared to his victory speeches.
I am watching without sound. His body language is that of someone who has something to hide, someone who got caught doing something bad. I have no idea what he is saying.
McCain: “We’ll move forward…prez campaigns are very very tough.”
get the hillbilly heroin stat
McCain: There will be other obstacles in this campaign so lets just get this one behind us, OK?
Mrs STEPFORD McBush probably gave Johnnie a handfull of vicodin he is speaking like that now!
McCain says disappointed–once yet again.
What happened to yesterday’s pride? All this disappointment today.
I’m not clear on how exactly she is “supposed” to look?
no wonder she needed to drug herself….whata prick this guy must be to live with
