From Jonathan Alter’s excellent, “The Defining Moment: FDR’s First Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope”, pg. 210-11 (paperback ed.):
“The origins of [FDR’s first] Inaugural’s most famous line – “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” – remain unclear…Eleanor Roosevelt [claimed] one of her friends gave FDR an anthology of Henry David Thoreau’s writings…one of his line’s was “Nothing is so much to be feared as fear”…
Two years before the Roosevelt Inaugural, in February 1931, The New York Times ran a front page story on job creation begun by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The Times quoted the chairman of the chamber as saying, “In a condition of this kind, the thing to be feared most is fear itself.” “
Funny, I’m pretty sure Roosevelt did not stop his speech and reference his sources. By the way, how did that all end up working out?
Next up…William Jennings Bryan, cereal plagiarist – you read right. Just ask the makers of “Cross of Gold Honey Nut Bran Clusters “*
*Resurrecting regularity since 1853, look for the picture of Millard Fillmore’s satisfied smirk on the box

Attaturk!
…again…
Thank you Attaturk.
I’d like to hear Mike Barnicle’s take on this plagiarism stuff. I’ll go turn on MSRNC. Be right back…
All this plagiarism b*llsh*t is simply sucking up dead air…
attaturk, I made this point yesterday and I want everyone to take notice;
yesterday on a long drive I heard on news radio that in the state of new york, a state that never votes republican, mccain is only 7 points behind hillary or obabma
now this is frightening and awakening
here we are, living behind the most dangerous, miserable, damaging and hated president in history, and a person who claims he is going to give yet another term of that same presidency is running only 7 points behind any democrat runnign
errr
what about the states that are not this blue?
we are in tons of trouble with either obama or hillary running, and I think it was irresponsible for thesse to be our candidates
now we all blame the media for ignoring edwards, but so the frig what
that was the hand we were dealt and we played the hand right into their pot
we live in a bubble here at the lake, we know things most people have no clue, they believe the corporate spin, they believe mccain will go against republican policy and they re most a good percentage of democrats are either bigots,m masogenists or both
we are in tons of trouble and if there is another republican elected next cycle our republic will be lost forever
And how much anyone wanna bet Obama carries Wisconsin today? He carried MN hands down. On this one, as MN went, so goes WS…as more often than not happens between these two neighboring states…separated by the St-Croix River…
Well, the reporters have to make up something to talk about.
I think it was irresponsible for thesse to be our candidates
Say what?
Isn’t it WI not WS?
Good morning.
Yeah, the plagiarism thing seems ridiculous to me. Political speech isn’t scholarship or journalism, where there are professional sanctions for using someone else’s language. I think I could probably find a thousand references to the fact that words are important. I’m leaning toward Obama in the Texas primary, and the charges make me lean much farther that way.
that’s what I am saying, these are the easiest to beat among all democrats that were running and I’ll say it again
obama and hillary give the republicans their wet dream in a presidential race
You’re right…I don’t know what I was thinking…My girlfriend went to U of WI–Madison, and I went to visit her there many times. How quickly we forget…*g*
I’m not Mike Barnicle but you can get mine. A paradigm shift of difference in his swapping speech items with Kilpatrick and Obama lifting from a book or article without acknowledgement.
Let me help you with plageurism. Clinton steals from her husband’s speeches without acknowledgedment all the time. Her Isaiah reference (a frequent reference) at the King Funeral where she looked like the one being buried after her husband spoke–straight from Bill Clinton’s speech writers.
Big example of HRC’s plaguerisum–she steals slogans and words directly from Obama nearly every week.
Biden had a minor issue. No one gives a damn about it now. Obama doesn’t have an issue with plaguerism and if you’re looking to attack him, help Ickes try to steal Michigan and Florida–you’ll fail but it’ll be fun for you.
Or you can call Super Delegates and beg.
There are 103 Super Delegates up for grabs today. Obama’s going to take most of them.
74 Wisconsin
29 Hawaii
Texas is even in most polls today.
HRC needs about 60% of every state including today’s two to win with pledged delegates. No can do.
Hi Biodun Aren’t you too important here to be stooping to the grabbing of zeds like the rest of us pions? *g* Morning!
It’s not lost on me that Hillary stole Obama’s “change theme” right after one her defeats. See?
Biodun may be important but he always has something interesting to say and one helluva travel background.
I’ve been seeing the exact opposite. In the last week, Obama has been gaining into double-digit leads over McCan’t in several states, including a recent 15% lead in MN. Hillary is losing ground to CrazyTrain in most of those same states. The only one I’ve seen so far where Obama is losing to McCandyCain is FL, where St. John has campaigned a ton and Obama not at all. These are SurveryUSA (the most accurate so far) and Rasmussen, a somewhat accurate polling company.
Just like with Clinton, when Obama has time to go head-to-head with the name recognition candidates, he gains considerably. Coupled with the record-shattering Dem voter turnout, I’d say it’s looking pretty good for Dems in general!

I thought it was WIZ?
Now I am all confused.
P.S. How close will da Rev. Hucklebee get to George W. McCain?

Hmm not so much. First the Republican wet dream (whatever they can call up) probably is about guns, money, and inappropriate sexual relations. :-< That said, I think either will do fine, though, alas, I happen to prefer Bama.</p>
What’s funny Kay is if any of us were running for anything, off the top of our head before we called in any campaign experts to advise us, we’d all be thinking of a change theme.
Obama gave it the significance of a social movement though–and I’m hardly the first to say this, something like JFK did when he was running.
I love Biodun too. (and I was joking with him). :-)
*g* You think they can craft that inappropriate sex relations theme into a campaign item?
Here’s the New Yorker article on McCain from this week:
On the Bus
Can John McCain reinvent Republicanism?
by Ryan Lizza
Hi Raven, mea culpe! (I think there will be a hard undertow at the lake this AM for me; I need to get back to editing!).
I know.
So it was irresponsible for THEM to be our candidates?
If a question is planted and then the questioner asks the planted question is that plagiarism?
Typos by two of our greatest minds on the Lake, it’s a dark day indeed! :)
Now there are reports that Camp Clinton intend to target Obama’s pledged delegates.
The bring it all down strategy is going to leave Bill C. about as popular as Chimpy.
Not that I trust Roger Simon’s word.
-G
Well it would be interesting to put out there the 2 photos of his marriage 1 and his marriage 2 (his second many moons later was with a 20 some year old (his current wife). By the way last night at dinner, my kid says of this wife, “does she know how to talk, I have never heard her say anything.” Hmmmm.
One tangible thing Huck is doing to McCain although I can’t gauge the extent–he’s making that campaign spend money to achieve a respectable viable image for the general–not because he needs to beat Huckabee–he’s done that–but because every time Huckabee beats him it reflects negatively on him for the general.
At least that’s the conventional wisdom on how the Huckster is hurting McCain by staying in the race. The more money McCain has to spend now, the better for us later.
What kind of plant, annual or perennial?
You gotta be kidding me right? When you hear pundits and attendees after an Obama speech talking about tingling up his leg and crying because of the inspiration of the speech plus now we hear about women fainting this is NOT a revival. It is an important election and these kinds of thngs are fodder for the Republicans to use in the General Election. Remember the Republican Convention in 2004? I can never get over all the flip-flops in the crowd and people chanting. A few more of these is all they will need to show Obama is an empty suit that has not been properly vetted by the media. He’s plenty vetted as far as the netroots, but that will not be enough. Do you realize that FLORIDA had one half MILLION more Democratic voters than all the caucus attendees combined! Did you know that Obama spent 1.3 million dollars in Florida preceding the Florida Primary. Thats not campaigning? And today, Washington State will have a primary (1.5 million voters) that will not matter since they already had a caucus. A secret ballot, 1-person, 1-vote is a lot different than a caucus. Words do matter. Watching the 2 speeches side by side is dramatic and laughable, Republican fodder foe the General for sure.
No but she is a great hummer!
8 years of a functional illiterate residing at 1600 PA and we’re worried again about
plagiarism?
You freakin kidding me?
Oh, ok, I’ll vote for hillary now that you have explained everything.
Hmmm, thanks for crediting it as a typo. Alas, I am in perpetual struggle with base ignorance – it is like the wolf at the gate. Sometime you can ask Biodun how many takes it took me to get Kristol spelled correctly.
I think generally, Cindy, is one of those wives who’d rather be anywhere else than on the campaign trail, but has no choice in contrast to say Michelle Obama who thrives at making speeches and using her strong background as a lawyer.
My loose analogy would be Chelsea Clinton. She loves her mom, and will do anything for her, but Chelsea would rather be anywhere else than in the lime light and that’s why she refuses to talk to the press.
What were they thinking, these smart campaign strategists of the HRC campaign. Since I recognize and once admired the smarts of Harold Ickes and HRC herself, I want to know what they think they gain from the steady stream of patently piteous complaints and excuses by themselves and surogates? The last one being Blue primary wins in red states don’t count. (Just ask the newly elected dem. govs. of those states how little it counts. Yup, over there, the lady goc with the superdelegate badge on, you bloody idiot, bloody idiot from MICHIGAN no less.)
There must be a backdraft strategy here. It has been suggested to me that the significant state quality primary remarks were meant to flatter OH/PA/TX significant state voters. Balderdash.
I may be a white elitist who uses the word Balderdash, but isn’t possible that this kind of s**t only interests political junkies and does not reach the regular voters, who in any case are far more interested in big state pride when it comes to football conferences and bowl games than in elections. While it will certainly be picked up by the small state MSM as a bone to pick with HRC.
So what are these smart people getting us to do. So I can stop doing it.
BTW, traveling away from the Toobz and missed you guys a lot. had to read the dead tree version of the times w/o Marion’s preview. Ruined breakfast.
Glenn,
Clearly Sen. Clinton’s victories are the only ones that count.
-G
*g*, sort of an extended mid throat cackle – on your plant joke.
Mike Barnacle on plagiarism? Are you kidding? He was kicked out of the Boston Globe for plagiarism himself years ago, and then a few years later, Boston Herald hired his sorry ass…
I have a great excuse, I can’t type and it’s worse with this little cocker on my lap!
I am sure you are right about this, still, Chelsea speaks. Ditto I have heard Mrs. Huck speak
You mean MSNBC…*g*
Don’t be runnin around humanizing the enemy! :)
Ohhhhhhh. Good visual, cute. How little and black or yellow?
Also, clearly Glenn, the GOP will have no anti-Clinton fodder in the general election.
Also clearly redstates that Obama has won do not matter because they will be lost in the general election.
Now then why is it that Texas is so important?
-G
Hi there. You wanna get going on some discourse this morning? *g*
I’ve been up since 2 AM CT…
Biodun,
Hence the reference.
I gotta slip you some of my digital punchline awareness software:)
-G
I hate to admit it but I have to google for a lot of words to try to keep from mispelling them. I know what they mean, but I’m not sure where a vowel goes some times or if the vowel is even supposed to be in the word.
And plagiarism and plaguerism (the wrong spelling I used a couple posts ago) confuse me; and now we have all these sland spellings for google hits that makes it more confusing.
I guess I could reach for one of a bunch of dictionaries on the shelves, but I’ve gotten in the habit of “the google” as my president calls it.
20 lbs, Black just like Raven was but smaller!
Did you get my link to you last thread? I think it was EPU’d…
I can only hope this “poll” was not done credibly, it was on corporate run media so who knows?
Morning all :)
Not really related to anything, but still
‘Internet predator’ stereotypes debunked in new study
Internet offenders target teens, not young children — rarely use force, abduction or deception
WASHINGTON— Contrary to stereotype, most Internet sex offenders are not adults who target young children by posing as another youth, luring children to meetings, and then abducting or forcibly raping them, according to researchers who have studied the nature of Internet-initiated sex crimes.
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_…..021408.php
did I thank you for the dog advice?
Nope on the discourse! I’m suppose to be doing other things and I just realized I have jury duty in the next 2 weeks (it will take time from the task at hand). What cha doin up so early central time? Out for an early run around the lake?
That one wasn’t scheduled so I didn’t see it coming…*g* Honestly…
Chelsea is a puzzle. Smart enough to work for a hedge fund, not smart enough to say that it would have taken clairvoyance to have voted differntly on the Iraq vote. That makes 23 senators including Lincoln Chafee and most of all OBAMA clairvoyants.
Vote for OBAMA he can change the future since he can see before it happens. Just ask Chelsea Clinton (Stanford BA, 200x).
So since they wrote the words for her, why I ask again are they treating us as if we are idiots.
I knew s/he was black the minute I hit submit. Raven=black, I’m on game this morning. :-)
Ah cocker, time for me to show my cockerlove. How is it/he feeling?
Another thing I must mention. When I saw the interview with Michelle Obama in which she stated , “This is the first time I have ever been proud of my country”. The FIRST TIME? This too will go in the Republican playbook against the Democrat in the General. I keep hearing on CSpan this morning that alot of Republicans are voting for Obama in the Primary (Wisconsin) so it will be he against McCain and they will vote McCain of course.
Chelsea shows up at very carefully selected colleges and speaks and I guess Mrs. Huck does speak some, and come to think about it Cindy never does speak. She also is probably like a lot of people terrified to get up in front of crowds, and the more someone like that thinks about it the worse it gets.
It used to be that way for me until I was forced to do it in school with no choice.
Please let me say, just in case BO and HRC have people watching the DFH sites, if y’all f*ck this up and cost us the general we are going to be torches and pitchforks pissed off. Just sayin. Knock it off.
Oh shucks…
Ah admission of cheating (or at least thinking)! Which is worse, plagarism or hitting the renew button anxiousl at the top of the hour at the lake?
palag-i-at is the French word for plagiarism. I keep in in mind every time I write the word because it sounds the vowels.
Better than google. free access to great dictionaries. including the oxford with all its histories of word usages.
http://dictionary.reference.com/
maybe In didn’t use the right terminology, but these are the candidates the republicans wanted, we allowed them to pick for us through their media
I think everyone knows edwards was the only among these three that polled every time beating any republican
so we are now left with the hand media wants us to play and that is my point
I fear we over deconstruct! Did you read what McWar has said about his people recently? (I think it was in the NYT yesterday- he thinks he is funny, but really stupid). As the top of the post says – it is all about fear. If we/they stop talking (as in Mrs McWar) because what we say will be held against us, where are we? And, compare Michelle’s comments with all the crap Bill has said of late.
Joe Scarborough hopped on it this morning on his show and Mika Brezinski defended her.
Those kinds of things that have been coming from the Clinton campaign are as the trite observations say, desperate grabbing at scraps.
I mean if Michelle Obama’s comment and the supposed stealing of phrases from the Massachusetts governor is all they have as types of criticism…
*g* Whatever happened to the candidates drilling the issues?
Glad to have you back. Don’t know what I’d do if I were toobz-less…
Yes. Stretch the word out.
Always sound advice on consecutive vowels.
*g*
Well, many here know that raven was our 14 year old who battled cancer for 2 1/2 years and died last April. We have a wonderful knucklehead husky/saymoyed mix named bohdi and we thought he could use a pal. We called our vet looking for advice about potential cockers and they jumped it and said they had this little female that had cherry eye, bladder stones and very bad allergies. We agreed to go see her and, of course, now she is our Lil Bit!
If only I had taken any langauge but 4 years of Latin in school. I really regreted it when I went to Europe and found out how much it would have helped me to speak French. It took me a long time just to find things in a grocery in Paris because of the language even though I could see them.
I don’t think Edwards has a tinkers chance in hell to beat any republicans.
Wet dreams Repub. style. A Bush judicial bankruptcy judge and one of his 84 frozen nominees, was arrested for a DUI while wearing black dress stiletto heels, fishnet stocking and carrying a purse. Mr. Nominee had trouble finding his license in his purse, that’s how drunk he was or how much the heels hurt.
Mug shot shows him in blue eye shadow.
Sad ill man. also stupid.
He has resigned his post. funny not picked up outside of MA even by the Muck.
With this juicy tidbit I return to the business of doing the day’s business. missed you guys!
Got up to freelance for BBC World Service–so got up before their own day across the pond is over. I usually run–along the Mississippi later in the afternoon. My running schedule ends the working day for me, of sorts, at the workstation, although I may dip in again at night (my own night.). This is what happens when you deal with many time-zones…*g*
the former of course…or did you have to ask?…*g*
A probably out of print book titled the road to Xanadu compares the books Coleridge was reading with the poems he wrote at the time. For example in the Ancient Mariner he wrote “The waters like a witches oil burnt green and blue and white”. And while he was actually writing the poem his diary shows he was rereading MacBeth which happens to include a scene of three witches around an oil cauldron.
By itself,a coincidence. But there were hundreds of such coincidences.
The author; Livingstone Lowes , didn’t consider this plagiarism. Just a normal process under which things in your mind influence the words you choose to use.
Tag: useless information.
I understand your concerns, but don’t agree with your conclusion. White males of all sorts had every opportunity to win the Dem. nomination, but the voters decided otherwise.
By all accounts Sens. Clinton & Obama have energized the base, independents, and younger voters like no one else could have (save maybe Gore, my first choice, who decided to sit this one out.) My hope is that the electorate is changing, putting more emphasis on the candidates message vs. their sex or race.
You’ve forgotten that I got high horsey one am and asked why cocker puppies should distract us from saving the constitution. You were properly unhappy–I forgot that pups and pooties are all genetically DFH, except Barney of course. This last post was another act of contrition.
and definitely my last post of the am. till tonight then.
I hold no grudges, life is too short.
I agree, and he was my second choice.
Tag useful information. A book by a great neuroscientist for the rest of us on why forgetting aint alzheimers.
Schachter, 1999: The seven sins of memory.
Actually in a manner of speaking, yes, around FireDogLake that is…check out earlier threads around 2:30 AM CT…
You asked for this one, Richmond…now this an opening for that discourse, as Derrida would say: entamer un discours…to cut into discourse…
I, on the other hand, may be getting what has been called “Irish Alzheimers”, where I forget everything except grudges.
Glenn, Can you please explain where and how Sen. Obama spent all this money in Florida? My major concern at this point is that Sen. Clinton is more concerned about winning the primary and disenfranchising the democratic party while she’s at it.
Love it, some of my folks were Figgs of County Clare.
Sen. Clinton was ready for everything on day one except a tough primary challenge.
-G
Pete, you boldy stated “Big example of HRC’s plaguerisum–she steals slogans and words directly from Obama nearly every week.” However, as i read further you overlooked providing details and facts … could you provide them for the thread?
Good morning pups.
I’m still trying to make the case for a do-over in Florida if we don’t have a clear nominee by July. Click my name for the argument.
Raven, I’m partial to hounds. We have two rescues that we think are a Catahoula and a Walker. They are very eager to please and provide great company, although they are primarily outdoor critters.
Raven,
Just saw the issue with your cocker chewing her feet. My very talented animal chiropractor feels that is often caused by a pinched nerve that can be helped by a good animal chiropractor. Some are better than others she is terrific – does people and animals and is a genius. There is a web site listing those certified. I would give that a try.
It has been to long since we have had a candidate with so much charisma that can unite people. To compare Obama’s supporters to a cult insults the best of us. We are so much brighter than that.
Again with Fillmore smears. Attaturk, can’t you write a positive candidate diary?
this is all what my ex-husband labeled..”the trivia of life”
I never knew that technically a pledged delegate can vote for whomever they want like a Super Delegate (although they rarely do until this morning) from Chuck Todd.
I wonder, if Hillary loses how she will have any respect again. And Bill Clinton, he looks like a fool.
David Corn, on Washington Journal, is saying very simply that Obasma, with his lack of baggage and inspirational ability, may be able to mobilize more people than Hillary can to reverse the horrors of the Bush Adminstration. I still consider myself a supporter of both Clintons, but believe that Corn may be right. Obama may be better able to get the jobs done that need to be done.
Hmmm – Pakistan, Cuba. Good for you. Having to deal with European time zones makes it kind a hard on the system.
I have a river run too- it’s nice. Sometimes I see blue herons. And, yesterday I saw a white goose (you know Hans Christian Anderson type, not the canadian strip necked ones which are all over the place here). White geese have unbelievably long necks espec as seen in flight.
I “KNOW NOTHING” else
She has respect now, just saying. And, with the noose of the war off her neck, she will be able to be even more effective. (I am not saying she will lose, but as with the two Edwards, Gore, Kerry and many others, loss is not the end of the world. Indeed it can be a source of new power).
By the way, in the papers today is the tragedy of the housing crisis (foreclosures) not just on owners but also on pets who are either abandoned or put in now over-flowing rescue places and most likely will have to be put down. (Can you imagine the heart break on both sides). I want law suits against those who were involved in this mess – top down!
Perris is referencing the national poll that was highlighted here (and no where else) that showed Edwards as the ONLY Dem that beat every Repub candidate.
McCain, coincidentally was slightly higher than all the Dems.. …but Edwards.
When the MSM reported the poll they pretended Edwards was not in the poll. Just neglected to mention his results.
Makes a pretty good argument for perris’ point, if you ask me.
Luckily, you didn’t. :)
Thanks, I’ll check it out.
Ok, so what does it matter?
Please look again because I provided one in my example–I said:
Sure. I provided one. But it was provided for me on KO last night. I hardly blame her for doing it though–that has nothing to do with my support for Obama–it’s only in the news because of the manufactured flap where Obama and Governor Patrick trade phrases.
HRC has taken all kinds of change phrases from Obama without disguising them.
HRC used the Isaiah quote at the funeral of Correta Scott King in 2007 straight from her husgand’s speech in 2004
Castro announced he will not accept another term as President, but will continue to train in his Puma warmups to represent Cuba in the Olympics.
Instead of the lawsuits you want, look for calls for immunity and a bail-out.
What does it matter?
This election does seem to be the hand the “media” dealt us. I think the Democrats can take it, either way…
…but knowing it is going to be either “that bitch” or that “black muslim” running against the tortured war hero…
I’m nervous.
now this is just bizarre coming from fox news, if I hadn’t seen it myself I would have thought it came from ko or media matters;
http://www.latimes.com/news/pr…..9242.story
Well the meme out there is already, “who could have foreseen?” Alas these are the party donors so nothing is likely to happen. This along with the new banking and credit card usury in place needs Congressional action as well.
It is the nature of Firepups to be nervous, concerned, outraged and skeptical.
McCain years ago threw away being the tortured war hero to be a Bush toady.
I don’t lose respect for her if she loses. I lose respect for her in trying to steal pledged delegates, super delegates, although I expect Ickes to do that and Obama is trying to get as many Supers as he can, and most of all for trying to say that Michigan and Florida should be counted given that so many didn’t vote and Obama wasn’t on the ballot and this…
We and the Democrats have bitched for years that the Shrub administration couldn’t be more dishonest in shredding the Constitution in one issue after another and one agency after another. That’s true.
The DNC made rules. Florida and Michigan broke them out of the ego of a few politicians and the mischief of two Republican dominated legislatures and possibly Charlie Crist in Florida. Now HRC wants to adopt breaking the DNC’s sanction of those two states.
No will fly. Not ever.
Corn’s been an interesting guest from the standpoint of really interacting with callers and trying to “drill” down to find out why they’re commenting about various points.
I am more concerned about HRC than Barack. In the states that had open primaries, Obama took the Independent vote over McCain. McCain still has to cater to the extrem idealogues of his base. I know that some people are concerned about the polls. Keep in mind the media wants this to be a close election in order to keep ratings high.
My concern too. My vote for Obama should count as much as HRC’s vote for herself.
I think you’ve hit the nail square on the head.
And, I think that’s the reason so many of the lefty blogs are having Some Issues.
Yes, I’ve always enjoyed watching him, Joe Conasan, and a few others who will actually challenge callers. Most of them usually smile and say something like, “Well, thank you for calling me a low life scumbag, although I don’t think your are being fair to the horse I rode in on,….”
I gotta tell you HRC is the one most Republicans I know want to come out after–and most national Republican office holders are praying for her to be the one. They’re going to be disappointed.
She would bring voters out to vote against her in record numbers in the general, but fortunately she has to win the primary first and get 60% of every state coming to win pledged delegates and she won’t.
are we out of our friggin minds?
who the HELL came up with the bright idea of allowing this maggot to preside over a pro forma session?
errr
expect the republicans to attend and expect a vote on the issue the president wants voted
this does not make ANY sense
JPL9, I got the information about Obama’s expenditures in Florida from the Center for Responsive Politics. I’m not necessarily Obama or HRC committed. BUT, I am incensed that Florida’s primary is ignored when we are the 4th largest voting block and other states changed their primary or caucus dates and not penalized.
There was an independent analysis that couldn’t come up with the numbers. They could be counting GA ads since some stations are carried also across the line. I might have more time to do research later and I’ll let you know. The problem I have with Michigan and Florida is that both Obama and Hillary agreed ahead of time not to count the delegates. Hopefully after March 4 that will be a mute point.
Good morning Attaturk, pups!
I can’t remember where you stood vis-a-vis Edwards, but he would be/was clobbered by the media just as hard, if not harder- as someone promoting a “socialist-like” agenda and class warfare. Whom ever is elected will just have to deal.
the differance is they would have a harder time demonizing edwards
Hey Raven, am feeling nervous, concerned, outraged and skeptical about politics. Is this normal?
Hell yes, sure fire test that you are alive. Now go do something you enjoy!
I’m feeling all those emotions about the following;
the link is on my 123
OT but fun: TPmuckraker has the story of a California judge trying to shutdown WikiLeaks.org. Apparently, the judge and the Swiss banker plaintiff have no idea who WikiLeaks are, so they laid a court order on their service provider to lock up that domain name and throw away the key. Of course, mirror sites all over the world have sprung up serving the same content in locations where that judge has no jurisdiction. Somehow, this situation reminds me of the old kids cartoons with their monumentally inept villians.
*snickers* I’m also thinking in terms of whack-a-mole. The ‘net allows for that, which frustrates the greedy record companies as much as that judge and that swiss banker.
When I heard about the order to shut down wikileaks, that was my first thought.
I hope they posted that info to overseas sites too.
Enough of using the “states secrets” scam to break the law!
They were already doing it by avoiding him all together (my view).
We can all relax, Joe Lieberman will be covering our asses.
Lieberman will be like Tom Cruise in Risky Business.
Lieberman: “Hey George, I’m having a party tonight!”

For you? *g*
Very fun ****g****
Hmmm – probably about the time Nancy puts impeachment back on the table…
this should fire up the FDL base
Obama, McCain on Castro’s resignation
Posted: 09:56 AM ET
(CNN) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Tuesday the resignation of Cuban President Fidel Castro should “mark the end of a dark era in Cuba’s history.”
In a written statement, the senator from Illinois added:
“Fidel Castro’s stepping down is an essential first step, but it is sadly insufficient in bringing freedom to Cuba. Cuba’s future should be determined by the Cuban people and not by an anti-democratic successor regime.
“The prompt release of all prisoners of conscience wrongly jailed for standing up for the basic freedoms too long denied to the Cuban people would mark an important break with the past. It’s time for these heroes to be released.
“If the Cuban leadership begins opening Cuba to meaningful democratic change, the United States must be prepared to begin taking steps to normalize relations and to ease the embargo of the last five decades. The freedom of the Cuban people is a cause that should bring the Americans together.”
John McCain, R-Ariz., also issued a written reaction to the media.
“Today’s resignation of Fidel Castro is nearly half a century overdue. For decades, Castro oversaw an apparatus of repression that denied liberty to the people who suffered under his dictatorship.
“Yet freedom for the Cuban people is not yet at hand, and the Castro brothers clearly intend to maintain their grip on power. That is why we must press the Cuban regime to release all political prisoners unconditionally, to legalize all political parties, labor unions and free media, and to schedule internationally monitored elections.
“Cuba’s transition to democracy is inevitable; it is a matter of when — not if. With the resignation of Fidel Castro, the Cuban people have an opportunity to move forward and continue pushing for the moment that they will truly be free. America can and should help hasten the sparking of freedom in Cuba. The Cuban people have waited long enough.”
Shouldn’t Obama hail the passing of the torch from the leader of the great revolution?
That should be January 19, 2009
And if they find out a Democratic administration is spying in violation of FISA, or committing any other “high crimes”, they will be thankful impeachment is, once again, on the table.
1,761 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Richmond and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“…socialist-like agenda” and class warfare. Whom ever is elected will just have to deal.”
Yes, Democratic candidates all over the country from dog-catcher ta Governor, from school board to Senator need to knock this old fascist shibboleth right outta the fuckin’ park. This year we get to drive a stake thru the heart of the old “cold war” boogymen…every voting citizen is capable of voting their own interest and will be able to identify their interest based on their own experience. Only 17-25% of the votin’ population are mindless wingnuts who will always vote against their class or social interests, this is the year for Americans to call “bullshit” on fascism. I don’t fear John McCrazy or any of the other declared fascists… I only worry about those who have been callin’ themselves “third way” Democrats, if she gets the nomination we’re fucked and there will be blood in the streets before democracy is restored.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THERE IS NO COMPROMISING WITH FASCISTS!!
I don’t know who said it originally but it was Louis Howe, FDR’s long time friend and advisor, who insisted it go in the speech.
Attaturk, I think you are missing the point of this whole thing. It’s not that Obama plagiarized so much. The problem is that what he plagiarized is what he’s running on. If it hafd been some little inconsequential part of his speech, that would be different. But the “just words” thing is what drives Obamaphiles into ecstasy. They eat up the whole inspirational thing. There’s nothing wrong with borrowing from another person, but Obama isn’t so much borrowing as running Deval Patrick’s campaign all over again. It’s like a package that was designed to fit a post-racial, transcendent African-American candidate. One size fits all. These phrases were beta tested for optimal effect. He’s not original. THAT’S the problem.
And he sucks at debating policy too.
The world is about to end, though, right?
Why spend time on correcting typos?
OT but relevant to any and all lunacy.
There’s a lunar eclipse Wednesday night.
That’s a very good time for the world to end.
Who did Obama copy when he wrote his book “Dreams From My Father” nearly 15 years ago? In the book, he says many of the same things he’s saying today, including the power of words and inspiration, and his writing is very poetic.
You realize of course that Patrick used a lot of Obama’s 2004 campaign rhetoric, right? You know they both have had the same campaign manager, David Axelrod, for years now, right? Perhaps some of the similarities could come from this? How about Hillary’s flat-out copying of several of Barack’s lines just within the last month or so? I doubt Obama gave her permission to use his stuff.
If originality is key, then I’ll be writing in Tom Waits this year:

Oh wait….at times he sounds a lot like Captain Beefhart and Kurt Weill. Damn, nevermind.
The attack is not effective, since now the other candidates are vetted and suprise:
Clinton borrows quotes from Clinton, and McCain can’t speak Good anyway.
What this mostly shows though is that attack politics does not work with the following exception: when the media is on board. The media ran down the points of Obama (had referenced Patrick in the past, that other candidates were “guilty”). If the media had choosen to they could play it up one-sided, but its serial bullets (first Edwards, now Clinton, next perhaps Obama).
The media for the most part dictacts and “effective” attaack.
Break time from commenting anything @ FDL for awhile. For myself & perhaps others who read FDL & are not inside the commenting exclusivity bubble, posting here has become too much the insiders’ game again IMHO. I’m, I guess, something of an old hand (8/06), but not an overbearing one. Current commenters who post sooo much they turn threads into their personal chat room remind my of Alfred Kilgarries, who has moved onto greener pastures, I can only assume.
Early to late late multi-posting election year/opinionated commenters & their posts back & forth (ala so many of the political chat rooms) make others want to log out & just stay out of their way. Will read here as always, but that’s all until after the general election.
Oh, and to the point above me, Clinton has also used Edwards lines (like knowing who has Blockbuster video’s but not who is in the country), and Obama lines.
No legs here, and I think Obama took the advice on getting a bit more policy specific in his appearances (not just on his website, etc) in time to head off that attack.
Mike Barnacle on plagiarism? Are you kidding? He was kicked out of the Boston Globe for plagiarism himself years ago, and then a few years later, Boston Herald hired his sorry ass…

And he moved to the right for his masters.
Republicans crossing over to muddle the election…no, such a thing could never happen.
If they were smart they would vote for Clinton since it would lengthen the race. It also could help them win seats in Congress if its true that running against Clinton will “rally the base”.
I am gonna laugh & laugh when (and if) the people that crossed over to vote for one of the Democratic candidates can then call them President (which is exactly why I told my fiend in NH not to play games by voting for McCain – he was afraid of Mitt for some reason).
I don’t think Edwards has a tinkers chance in hell to beat any republicans.

Sure on an even playing field, but he got a media bullet in the primary and would have in the general. Clinton and Obama were allowed to pass. On the R side I think they f’ed it all up.
As I stated next in line for a media bullet is/was Clinton – if that was to take her out or make the race close I do not know.
Mug shot shows him in blue eye shadow.

Linkey please. This is surely a MSM story considering the wierd, and the politics (Bankrupcy judge in the age of bankrupcy & Bush II apointing tons of evil people) – lets see if it makes it to the news.
I have some friends fairly high up in various campaigns around the country, and several are hearing that local Repubs are putting out word to vote for Clinton anywhere there is a an open primary, including today in WI. It’s fairly well agreed upon within Party operations that Johnvez McSharraf will only stand a chance against Clinton. Recent polls are showing that with Obama opening up 10-15% leads on McCan’t, while Clinton loses to CrazyTrain almost across the board. Stunning.

I am incensed that Florida’s primary is ignored..

If FLA had stayed in line their primary would have had more weight.
this should fire up the FDL base

Doubt it since every candidate is going to say the same thing, and Edwards would have said the same thing as well. Gotta pander to Corn & Exiles.
Perris, The problem with your argument is that Edwards actually started losing by 10 points to McCain nationally in January, while Obama beat him by a statistically significant margin (Clinton was statistically tied).
Edwards only did better than the McCain when McCain was not considered “THE” Republican favorite.Once he started his rebound he started to beat Edwards. And Edwards never faced any scrutiny over his record by the MSM (the same charge that Clinton is making vs. Obama).
If his actual Senatorial record had been scrutinized it would have shown a very problematic candidate (especially for progressives). He was, with Joe Lieberman, a cofounder of the quite centrist-right New Democratic Coalition (a branch of the DLC), a caucus which had as members such luminaries as Ellen Tauscher and Art Davis (Alabama) in the House branch. In the Senate that Caucus consisted of Edwards, Lieberman, Bayh, Breaux and Landrieu (LA), Bob Graham (FL), Bob Kerrey (Neb), Blanche Lincoln (Ark), and Chuck Robb (VA).
And imagine what would have happened when issues like Edwards opposition to bills requiring that downed cattle not be put into the food chain. Or his support of the bankruptcy bill. Or his vote to table Dodd’s efforts to limit the reduction in the tax code rates and estate tax levels (in which he joined 13 Blue Dogs and the entire Republican wing to kill). In fact there are over 30 Bills that he joined with the Republicans against the concensus of the Democrats on issues relating to tax cuts, tabling accountability measures relating to the Iraq War, against public financing for elections, Nuclear Waste storage, against Veterans Health care, for restrictions of travel to Cuba, allowing sales of semiautomatic weapons and accessories over the internet, allowing the surplus 9instead of tax increases) to pay down fiscal year debt, etc. The list goes on-and-on.
It’s why the progressives in the Senate didn’t support him…they knew his record and the fact that he constantly voted to table, kill, and waive progressive bills and amendments with the Republicans and Blue Dogs.
That poll showed that Edwards was well behind the Obama and Clinton in the Democratic race, and had a large number of “undecideds” in the match up vs. the Republicans. Quite simply it showed that people didn’t know who he was or what he stood for. So he had few negatives. At that time Romney was at the top of the Republican polls. McCain was down quite a bit…and all the Democrats were ahead of McCain.
But by January the polls showed that McCain was resurgent, and Edwards was actually almost 10 points behind him in a head-to-head. Obama could beat McCain, and Hillary was in a statistical tie.
Look at the January polls on Polling Report
Since when is politics the same as academia or journalism?
So does this mean politicians now have intellectual property? (President Bush, of course, excluded).
Well said. I enjoy reading the stories and (some) posts but you’re right. I feel like I’m at a sorority/frat party sometimes. What’s with the cliquey-ness?
Interesting how everyone here just went charging past your post’s excellent book reference to get right into the mosh pit and ‘Obama!’….’Hillary…’ it up. If anyone wants to understand what it will take in a leader to get us out of this mess that book shows you.
And, make no mistake, neither The Hill nor Senator ‘Hope’ have got what it takes. She comes closest due to her experience, yes…she has way more than Obama, but lacks the populist fire we need. Edwards might have been able to do it but his campaign was sabatoged by both the corporatist media and the limp dicks, not the stalwart women, of the ’sphere. Kos coming out for Obama is one of the dumbest things I’ve seen in a good long time.
Maybe events will make me eat my words…..
But I really doubt it.
Oh well….
Edwards/Edwards ‘12!
The effectiveness of the allegation is demonstrated by the attempts to excuse what is clearly plagarism.
Plagarism – passing off someone else’s words or ideas as your own.
Word for word – not similar. No attribution. Having permission to use someone else’s words doesn’t excuse plagarism.
If your older brother gave you permission to use his term paper as your own, would that make it something other than plagarism?
