53064309_fc1bf87031_m.jpgI caught St. McCain feeding stale red meat to Vermont wingnuts on Fixed News over the weekend. It was one of those "bringinging you the news at it happens" deals, so I can't find a transcript. But I found the same talking points in this article.

McCain said he looks forward to a fall campaign against the Democratic nominee. “I say we will have a spirited discussion. They want bigger government, higher taxes, more regulation, a government takeover of the health-care system, and surrender in Iraq. We’ll have a very spirited debate on those issues and I’m confident as a conservative Republican against a liberal Democrat that most Americans will support me.”

Forget all of the lame strawmen in that paragraph and the fact that Americans really hate Republicans and bear with me for a sec.

Here's the zinger.

The “transcendent issue” of the 21st century, McCain said, is the “struggle against radical Islamic extremists.”

Get that? The war on the terrarists is the transcendent issue -- not of the election -- but of the century. Our very survival as a nation depends on it. But we've also got to cut taxes and have a smaller government.

On which wingnut planet does that make any freaking sense?

The Most Important War In 100 Years will undoubtedly require a transcendent commitment of treasure, which the nation raises with something commonly referred to as "taxes." Also undoubtedly required to win the War of Transcendence are new government agencies, people to staff those agencies, and lots of other people to manage those new people. We call all these extra people "bigger government."

As for "surrender" in Iraq, St. McCain can't keep that straight either.

George Stephanopoulos: But if Iraq is meeting those marks, then why not withdraw our troops step-by-step as Senator Obama and Senator Clinton call for?

McCain: Because it has to be dictated by events on the ground, not by an arbitrary date...

Stephanopoulos: But if we are making progress today?

McCain: We are making significant progress today.

So because we're winning, we have to stay. And when we're losing, we have to stay until we're winning. In which case we'll stay. And despite how long we stay and how much it costs and how many more people it takes to keep us safe, we need lower taxes and smaller government.

I can't wait for the general election.
