Andy McCarthy over at The Corner says Mike McConnell is, well, justified in his fear mongering about yesterday’s expiration of the Protect America Act:
When you go from no restrictions to no collection absent probable cause, that represents an enormous drop off in capacity. It’s that simple. Democrats who claim that people like McConnell are engaged in partisan fear-mongering are talking nonsense. And as McConnell noted this morning, every day we don’t fix this problem, the problem — the investigative leads you don’t get, the connections you don’t make, the things you don’t learn but which you should know — metastasizes. Intelligence is dynamic: you can’t stop collecting for a day, a week, a month or more and then figure you are picking up right where you left off. What you have lost tends to stay lost.
He somewhat dishonestly leaves out that little part where the Democrats offered to extend the Protect America Act for 21 days but the Republicans scuttled it, and Bush said he’d veto it anyway.
The President is misrepresenting the facts on our nation’s electronic surveillance capabilities. Last August, he insisted that Congress pass the Protect America Act; but this week, he refused to support an extension, which can only mean he knows our intelligence agencies will be able to do all the wiretapping they need to do to protect the nation. That surveillance can be undertaken under broad orders authorized under the PAA or under orders that can be obtained through the FISA court.
Details, details.

HI Jane
Well, as for me, I’m enjoying my last couple of days before I’m dead Tuesday at the latest.
So much crapola, so little time.
Are we all dead yet?
They’re not mentioning the part where ongoing surveilance can continue up to a year.
So, what we have is a situation where ongoing programs continue for up to a year and new targets can only be monitored for up to 45 days before obtaining a warrant.
Of course, if you are sloppy and inept and cannot get a warrant in 45 days, something might slip by.
But that is exactly the problem.
These people ARE sloppy and inept, and they want us to trust them to behave properly.
Hi, Jane, all!
Does misrepresenting the facts (lying) by a president which results in millions of deaths (Iraq) constitute grounds for impeachment? Sorry Speaker Pelosi, you don’t get a pass. To say I am pissed with Pelosi doesn’t quite cover it.

My impression is that the public has tuned Bush and the Republicans out. I don’t think they’re paying any attention to these guys anymore. The Repubs get whinier and whinier, apparently to no effect. I doubt the Congressional phones ringing off the hook about the expiration of the PAA.
I need to revise that statement.
The techs in the NSA, et all are not sloppy or inept, but the people who review and use the information have some problems.
That’s funny!!
I suppose McConnell will be taking FBI officials to court for not paying the bill for running the wiretaps, thus endangering national security when the telecoms cut of access to the intercepts.
Pelosi and Reid. At least Laurel and Hardy were amusing.
Olbermann said it best.
Absolutely. The NSA tech are the nicest, sweetest, most caring folks you ever could hope to have reading your email.
*waving to the nice NSA folks*
Fiore Rawks…! bmaz had posted it at EW’s place and I had to share it with ya’ll!
Mark Fiore: Nobody does it better . . .
If you are upset with George W. Bush’s criminality, Speaker, bring him up on impeachment charges. No guts. No glory.
Reid and Pelosi. I want to see you two fired.
Have to agree. Reid is my senator. Fucking doormat.
That’s a tad harsh, OKK, I’d just like to see them hand over the gavel to Dodd and Conyers or Waxman…!
My head almost exploded last night when Kohl applauded Obama’s line about protecting the Constitution. My wife had to grab my arm :)
She also told me I couldn’t talk to him after the party broke up.
Hi Jane, everyone! Dizzying all the details and permutations on Fisa.
You’re stuck with Reid?
I’m stuck with Feingold and Kohl. One leads the pack and the other doesn’t know what the pack is.
The Fourth Amendment.
The respect of the rest of the world.
Thousands of lives of US servicemembers.
Hundreds of thousands of lives of Iraqi civilians.
Billions of dollars spent on a badly-chosen war of choice.
Billions more spent on a ill-conceived occupation . . .
There’s more, of course, but I’ve lost my list. Where’s Hugh when you need him, or ET with his Scroll?
Try living in Georgia!
That’s what I mean (handing over the gavel). Though now that I think about it I would like to see both these jerks replaced by real Democrats (progressives with courage). Hope you are having a great Sunday on the islands. ;0)
L and okk
Hello everyone.
Lahoma
No thanks, the Congresscritters are worse that the insects :)
Cross your fingers to see if Facebook will post my video of Russ’ speech from last night!
YES! Sorry about the first few seconds being so shaky.
Unless I can find a free host for the video, it’s available to Facebook members only.
you know, yesterday, on my drive all I heard the whole trip was the president’s rediculous claims about the democrats not signing the bill, now I knew the president is the preson that wouldn’t sign the extension but not a single frikkin word about that from any news source I looked to
and the snippet they played from the democrats response was so lame, I was incensed that they didn’t attack what the president said
then I did a little research and I saw that the democrats DID put the facts to the president’s rediculous claims
yet nowhere, I mean nowhere, would the media play or report that actual democratic response
we really need to get back a media that is not consolidated and though I would have preferred hillary over obama, I think she is tied too closely to the media complex and I hope obama knows what needs to be done
we really need to rebuild the fourth estate, for as it stands, we are the fourth estate and that is not enough
I think the guy that zooms past me in the first few minutes was Wes Clark, he was sitting at my table.
If George Bush vetoes a bill that doesn’t contain telecom immunity,
the terrorists will have won.
Or the trial lawyers.
Whatever.
FISA is hard.
Let’s talk about the horserace.
Interesting to hear that from Mike McConnell, considering he let this slip out…
Will the real Mike step forward…
We have Inhofe and Coburn among other pieces of nasty work here in Oklahoma. Lahoma and I used to ride my Goldwing down 395 and into the desert when we lived in Tahoe City. We love Nevada.

Mahalo! That I am! 8-)
OT..
How are pup’s paws?
See. I don’t understand why if Bill Clinton can be brought up on impeachment charges for haveing sex in the oval office with an intern, a case in which nobody perished, but George W. Bush cannot be brought up on charges where millions have died as a result of the President’s lies to justify taking us into a war and occupation with Iraq. I must be simple.
Did I do a run-on sentence?
Via Americablog, did you guys see this exchange between Obama and McCain? Temper, temper…
Support your local blogosphere. It’s instilling a certain amount of fear into at least some of the consolidated media, as they are learning that no longer are they the sole arbiters of “what happened today, and what it means”.
It’s also causing some of the political establishment to rethink their activities. Given a lot of their past track record, that’s a very good thing.
i’ll see your feingold, kohl and reid and raise you a cornyn and hutchison.
I have only one critter that I’m disgusted with at this juncture, my senior Senator, Inouye, whom is only topped by Byrd for Senate Seniority, since he’s served since 1962! I’m disappointed with his 15,002nd vote…
I am looking forward to a one on one with Obama and McCain. Or for that matter, with HRC and McCain.
Schumer! I win.
If Ed*ardTeller were here, he’d have you all beat: Rep Don Young, Sen Lisa Murkowski, and Sen Ted Stevens.
With luck, two of the three will be behind bars in the not-too-distant future.
McCain is now the issue.
With an execrable Lamar Smith on the side.
If not all three, for the trifecta! ;-)
Mr. Stevens is some tidy piece of work.
Sorry OT — documents have been unearthed apparently linking Oswald to Ruby…for those interested…its about to be released:

McCarthy also somewhat dishonestly left out the fact that any ongoing surveillance efforts, and any new ones resulting from those efforts, will be unaffected by this change for a year by statute:
From Richard Clarke’s op-ed in last week’s Philly Inquirer.
Wrong. Issa here!
Is Doolittle from Placer County, Cali still wandering ’round loose?
Senate Majority Leader speaks from the AT&T Congressional Hospitality Suite at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.
When you can’t explain something you don’t understand it seems the operative word is “complex”. “Well it’s very complex.” If you don’t grasp it, it is complex. It’s like me trying to replace a string theorist teaching a course in theoritical physics. Ask me a question outside a memorized answer and I respond by saying “It is too complex.” And it is, for me.
My observation of shrub and his propagandists is they are dealing with a finite group. What are they now, 23%?
I could be wrong, but I believe he’s in the Pork Producers of America Hall of Fame.
I really can’t complain too much – Feingold (check!), Kohl (bleh!), Kagen (check!) Dave Hansen (State Senator, Check!)
The final step to finish off the chain would be Noonan :)
I liked Young’s Coconut Road earmark after the the bill had already left both houses and was merely awaiting the Prez’s signature… Talk about chutzpah…!
You get to caucus Tuesday. Are you getting caucus fever?
we can only hope.
there have been no times that i have not wanted to tear out all my hair every time cornyn either speaks or votes. kay bailey has voted exactly once in all these years in a way i was in agreement with: it was a vote a few years back against consolidation of the media – the media got consolidated anyway.
LS, what do you know about this news outfit?
i had the execrable for awhile, but then when the redistricting fiasco got redone, i got my doggett back.
Schumer got us Mukasey. That beats Issa, no?
Oh yeah! I’m only disappointed that I can’t caucus for Edwards! 8-( However, Obama is worthy of my efforts…!
I asked my lady this morning, while she was loading stuff into the washer machine, who she considered the most distasteful politician on the horizon. She didn’t miss a beat. “Joe Lieberman”. Lord in Heaven, this woman has my heart.
Please give us an account of your impressions so we get a feel for what it’s like to caucus.
Nothing, but it’s on Reuters and AP and all over the place if you google Oswald Ruby. There is going to be a press conference tomorrow. There is some
specterizationspeculation that it is from some kind of possible movie script, but the Warran Commission apparently published something “similar”….http://ap.google.com/article/A…..gD8USAS980
Whom are you running against? I’d like to contribute but I have an extremely low budget to work with… 8-(
Wow! Our man in Washington, the one we little people can count on to uphold our freedoms and rights./s
Feinstein too!!! She’s mine.
What Bush doesn’t say was that the intelligence WAS there and accessible before Sept.11…his administration ignored the information that the World Trade Center was likely to be hit. He had the information and he ignored it.
A former insurance agent that takes his recites Bush talking points.
The most a candidate in my race can take is $500, so it’s a low budget affair (or supposed to be).
Mahalo nui loa!
That I will! I promised Marion in Savannah, I would…! *g*
Let’s split the pot.
Deal.
