Music of the Night, from The Phantom Of The Opera.
What is your music of the night? As always, this is Late Late Nite FDL, where off topic is the topic.
Dare I make an appearance?
Ooh, Zed is not dead!
Nicely done, CT
dugg
Suzanne!
Not a “Phantom” fan, but this is good.
hi suzanne!
Mahalo, Ma’am! I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
Good night friends.
nite betsy
thanks nahant
newton, i’m not either but this is Phantom.. not just opera
hey tex hi and pain free sleep wishes
aloha ct
Nite Tex, CT, hi nahant, Suz, everyone
Really? Might be worth a second look. :>)
Rain, rain and more…
zed will be dead by tuesday or my name isn’t englebert flufferdink.
Oh, it’s from the feature film made of the Andrew Lloyd Weber stage play. ^^ hehe. It wasn’t bad, but it still never quite beats the first time i saw the play in Toronto at Pantages when i was 15. ^^
pleased to meet ya engleburt.
hey Margot
poor zed, and I always thought it was, z.
What a kick http://digg.com/music/Late_Lat….._The_Night
Ladies?
I had a
hoserfirefighter former beau of mine call me 2 weeks after my 7th knee surgery with an extra ticket to see Phantom when it was playing in SF. I explained how I was under doctor’s orders of no weight bearing for 6 weeks and the guy called me back, informed me he had rented a wheelchair for my use that evening. The play was fabulous in a way the movie was not able to capture.
hello late late niters
hey christine e
Veely interestink.
That’s happened several times with Diggs on other FDL posts, never been sure what caused it.
hey teddy
*blushing* i’ve never been double dugg before.
Eeeexactly! Glad he was such a dear to get you that wheelchair! Seeing the staged play is one of those things that just is, even for rock operas like that one. There’s an energy that isn’t capture on film and never will be.
I’ve done a few stage musicals an it’s insane behind the scenes but oh my GOD is it fun. When the audience is with you the entire time? Synergy is there, and that makes all the chaos and drama beforehand? Worth everything. I still love to watch them, because of that. But i always have.
‘evening, all.
It’s late here in FL, and the neighborhood is quiet…so I’ve been listening to Rage Against the Machine covering Allen Ginsberg’s poem, It Hadda Be Playin’ on a Jukebox.
Just discovered this about 2 weeks ago. Completely floored me.
Passing in the late night??
here’s the music that struck me when i started listening to tonight’s selection. don’t know why. phantom of the opera’s not quite my cup of tea.
Evening, all! No school tomorrow!
Only for the bestest.
that movie immediately makes me start humming ‘only in america‘ and then i, for some strange reason, segway into that shirley mcclain song where she is the taxi dancer… hey big spender
Suz! Well, I’ll weigh in here on the musical choice. Frankly, I found that version of Music of the Night rather creepy. He isn’t trying to seduce her, he’s trying to dominate her.
I so much prefer the Michael Crawford version- granted that it doesn’t have a great video, but damn, it is entirely different in intention, the way he sings it. Soft, sweet, seductive, soaring.
hey alicia
crawford was the best phantom for sure
Chris,
I was talking to someone in Northern NM today, and she said, “Ooh, you’re getting some really bad weather moving in.” So I went to the store and stocked up. Very nice to have a friend with satellite tv weather on!
I have to tell you that “Music of the Night” is one of the transcendent moments in all musicals I have had the pleasure of hearing.
In 1998, I took a month long trip up into the Yukon, across the Top of the World Highway to Alaska, down the Alaska Inner Passage, and back to Portland. This work accompanyed us all the trip. Imagine going through the boreal forst, following the Yukon River, passing through clouds of smoke from forest fires not even on the map, all the way hearing “Music of the Night”.
“…Let your soul take you where you want to be…”
Hey Alicia!
Suz- dayam, I forgot to include the link to Crawford singing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTDdbuhqELM
Trois Gymnopedies, by Eric Satie, and now an early piano version of An American in Paris on WQXR.
Hey, folks.
I saw that one but the video I ended up using was so lushly filmed – I agree, his singing is better in that one but this one conveyed the eye candy and ear candy mix I was going for.
hey julia
I forgot all about the pain. I did not need my heavy duty pain meds during the performance. The music took me away.
Oh I love that! That’s what I’ve been meaning to find again, it was on my last hard drive. Thank You!!
and starbuck, i would love to hear about that trip – deep sigh – one day i will get to alaska and see it for myself
Tonight is Puccini night here…
Un bel di vedremo
ohmystars, newton. one of my aunts studied opera – i remember as a kid, we would drive down to aunt mary’s and she would sing this song – i did not understand what she was singing but i felt the pain in her voice.
We like this one as a certain someone performed it for me the past…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAIMbYSwSWg
Reading your response brought a tear to my eye. You know, I am a former firefighter too!
On a warm summer evening, say about midnight, put this on a player, open the door and listen in the dark, with the gentle, or even no breeze darkness enveloping you and I guarantee that you will not be the same again.
a certain someone who is not going to be able to come to the meetup up?
I used to play a cassette of Gymnopedies all the time when I was a waitress just out of school and people still listened to cassettes. One of my neighbors told me she assumed I was a pianist because she heard me doing my finger exercises.
I love it. It’s so peaceful.
You know, I am a former firefighter too!
i promise not to hold your former career as a foundation saver against ya if you promise not to use my bitch with a badge against me – deal?
besides, i learned a long time ago, firefighters have the best popcorn.
You might want to see “Into the Wild”. We went this evening to see it but it was sold out. Had to settle for “Michael Clayton” instead.
Can’t seem to shake politics!
Anyway, opening FDL and seeing the “Music” video rescued me.
I vow not to look at a political thread for the rest of the evening!
sorry like I said priorities, the school comes before everything else… http://www.musicschoolsanmateo.com Family business and all….
starbuck – i’m gonna have to find that cd of phantom that he bought me at that performance. its boxed up somewhere
nahant, i understand – but one day, i will meet her :)
Hearing songs from Phantom takes me back to an era of sounds heard at my parents’ home. They really, really, love that score. I saw Phantom on Broadway but don’t recall which performers sang at the time, though I’m sure my folks can recall.
it’s a hit and run for me since I work tomorrow, but this track will pick you up. I love intense latin guitar and this track by the duo Strunz and Farah (Costa Rican and Persian, respectively) is just that: Bola
I am sure it will happen sometime.. she is a tough one to get free time with… :>)
Deal, although it wasn’t actually a career, since I did volunteer firefighting. It was in the Chicago suburbs, so I guess that counts for something.
The trip to Alaska was exceptional, the second of two so far. The focus of the trip was that my #2 daughter married an Alaska native, in Juneau. That does make it a bit out of the ordinary.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..&NR=1
starbuck, i see i forgot to include a *g or a snark tag on this – my apologies if you thought i was serious instead of teasing like i used to do back in the day when i worked the streets at night
So you are really a cop, then! I wondered the badge thing.
Your knee ok now?
24 years
knee is now titanium and sets off metal detectors :)
You must be a trip for the poor airport security folks.
Here is my counter to “Music”…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJHzoAmA8Ec
Hmmmmmmm. The Pentagon seeks to execute six detainees, some of whom were “harshly interrogated” and are therefore potential witnesses in torture trials. How convenient!
Dude, that’s just a “collateral benefit” and was never the original intent.
Get with the program!
muzzy, i grew up listening to everything from hank william, andre previn, clear through the broadway soundtracks to the beatles in my parent’s record collection. toss in my own rock and roll from those years and i got a pretty well rounded musical education. i can’t identify who composed what but i sure know when something stirs inside me, when music evokes an emotion or a memory or a smell from my past.
music has soothed my savage beast many times.
another great song… oh my – thank you
Dispatches from the front line
This is the second day after the turncoat democrats have left us wide open to a sneak enemy attack. I continue to maintain my vigil here at Fort Strato while our leader seeks additional allies on the enemy’s western flank.
Last night, I successfully infiltrated the very headquarters of the enemy within. I overheard one on the telephone ordering two cases of “forties”, no doubt ammo for a M-40 grenade launcher. Another one, in civilian clothing accosted me and asked if I was finding what I needed. I calmly picked up a case of Red Bull, thrust a wad of money at him and made my getaway.
I maintained an alert posture for the rest of the night at the cost of half of the case of Red Bull. I will save the rest for tonight.
My friends to the est and west have continued to dither and have refused my offers of assistance in fortifying their houses. At least, they recognize the need, agreeing that I needed to get help. A small victory. They’ll come around.
There was an attempt to breech my lines by subterfuge today. One of them drove boldly up to my driveway in a panel truck and approached the door. The truck said “FedEx” on the side, but it seemed that the “Ex” was newly painted. It probably was the Fedayeen, Saddam’s vaunted irregulars. Since the driver was obviously not one of us (he didn’t know the words to (great American)Sean Hannity’s theme song), I sent him away. That probably threw off the timing of the detonation of what I am certain was a massive truck bomb. Close call!
I am still waiting for my delivery of the ballistic glass for the front windows.
Going into the second night of the emergency caused by those hate-America-firsters in Congress, I remain an oasis of freedom. My nerves are beginning to fray. My wife and children suggested that they should attempt an exfiltration tonight to rendezvous with my uncle Cletus and return to help hold the wall. It’s a good plan. His trailer is not as defensible as my house.
I will get word out of my situation as I can. LET FREEDOM RING!
I’m sure.
Anyhow, Hillary promises that she would move the trials to civilian courts or to regular military courts, where torture-derived evidence is inadmissible. It’ll be interesting to see how that gets spun and by whom.
music has it’s own pathway to your soul/inner self and there is not much you can do to stop it… it will somehow get to you and bring memories up you haven’t had in years which most definitely includes smell..
Am awaiting your next report from the front!
Suzanne, if you like Previn and Broadway, may I recommend Sylvia McNair/Andre Previn doing the Jerome Kern Songbook. It’s called “Sure Thing”. Her rendition (damn! A political term creeps in even here!) of All the Things You Are” give me goos pimples to even hear it in my head!
“Hmmmmmmm. The
PentagonWhite House seeks to execute six detainees, some of whom were “harshly interrogated” and are therefore potential witnesses in torture trials. How convenient!”Hope you don’t mind a slight edit.
i hope the fake fed-ex’ers were not delivering the glass for the window and and are not now installing it in their casa du jour
What was the movie line – “A fair trial and a first-class execution”…
Crawford Style.
Thanks for vigilantly keeping us safe from ourselves.
Dispatches from the front, Cont.
Thank you wonderful Americans for your support. I will continue to endeavor to perservere. Please send more Red Bull.
God, that takes me back. I used to listen to this Satie piece on 33 and 1/3. Yes, that long ago. At an apartment on the second floor on the corner of Second Ave and 6th Street in New York with the sun streaming in on a Sunday morning and the New York Times all spread out all over the floor. Me and my neighbors would all be sitting around sharing the different sections of the paper.
Is there someplace where I can sign up to voluntarily let the government spy on my phone calls and e-mails, since the Democrats in Congress endangered our lives by failing to pass the legislation Our Leader demanded?
is there a song for i ain’t dead – but it aint tuesday yet
Hum a few bars and I’ll fake it…
ha!
Not exactly on point…
Dispatches from the front ,cont., cont.
You have no idea how much that means to this tired warrior. It brings tears to my eyes. Is the Red Bull on its way?
fork – there’s a utube for everything!
Thank you for that message from the front!
*stuffing redbull cans into the internets for strato*
Sorry, it got confiscated by Homeland Security…
Draw a big red “X” on the roof of your dwelling. Will attempt aerial deployment ASAP.
I recently purchased some herbal ointments and they were delivered by FedEx. Have I met the enemy…and he was a little wiry redhaired man in brown?
i was able to badge homeland security and get em back neuro. help me stuff these suckers into the tubes before that NSA truck figures out how to reconnect the distributor cap.
I have lots of music. Two nights ago I kind of got depressed over FISA/PAA so Shostakovitch’s 8th string quartet (in honor of the victims of fascism with 3 knocks at the door ) was on the box http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap-zYq2UBk4
That devolved into Sake Yo.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssyl9xKM9Vc
Last night in honor of the Heritage.org front page count down clock to the expiration of PAA, I cued up Addio del Passato if things went down slowly

Hi Suzanne, I have some music of the night or something great to listen to on a long car trip. Great guitar from Jimmy Wilsey, formerly of San francisco punk band The Avengers and he played the guitar on Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” hit some years ago. He has a new solo album, “El Dorado,” and you can listen to it on his page:

Figaro Figaro Figaro …
ooops! That’s Rossini…
Good night all.
Fight the Power
Figaro Figaro Figaro …that reminds me of another great movie: “Hopscotch”.
g’nite rond
Travesty!
The NSA truck could probably get some technical advice on that from Sen. Stevens…
Yes! Matthau going through the tool booth!
hahaha ohmystars
And Charlie Partana’s hit on Marxie Heller in “Prizzi’s Honor.”
I must sadly admit the last two movies i saw at the theater were Shrek and Shrek II.
“Hey Meyerson, how did you get so small!”…then later, he has the CIA and FBI shoot up the summer cottage. Hilarious!
BRILLIANT!
Quite.
That’s a keeper.
Strato. Thanks for your brilliant efforts. If we don’t die, it’ll all be worth it and we’ll have you to thank. Sending Red Bull and roses.
hey busted – feeling better or are ya still singing the nyquil blues?
Hey Busted!
Watch the Floyd yet?
I’m gonna live.
I’m thankful for the Nyquil dreams and the rest.
The sleep did the trick, I think this one would have hung on for weeks without 24 hrs of forced shuteye.
T’was a bad one.
No, thanks fer reminding me.
The bionic women
but since it is just one knee, i can run really fast – in circles
Anybody heard from TOW?
She had a case of the crud too.
It’s light fare, for those of us who made stereo purchasing decisions based on that one record…
But really cool.
Forgot to mention – Alan Parsons is on the board.
EEEeeeexcellent.
iirc, tow was recovering from it as was alias
tired. i keep telling myself it’s ok to go to sleep: strato’s got us covered.
and we’ve got him well stocked with enough red bull to get him through another nite.

Night all you good firepups… see ya at the next late late late night extravaganza …. keep the music going… it is one thing they can’t take away from us
HA!
Looks like I am going to have to register a formal complaintagainst these barbaric conditions,it seems my folks don’t have a DVD player amongst all this high falutin’ tee vee equipment.
I will have to aquire one for my own casa de sty as mine went to the big pile of electrical contraptions in the sky right before I came over here.
This little laptop would be an excersize in torture trying to watch it.
Gnite all who left while I was typing.
That it would. And the volume is kinda important.
g’nite nahant
Still learning our iPhones. I downloaded about ten hours of music I’ve written from the studio computer to the iPhone. It took it four minutes. Most of my life’s artistic work – four minutes. Sheesh!
Rumor has it from multi sources that the next round of FBI stings of Corrupt GOP Bastards in Alaska starts happening this coming week. Fingers crossed….
oh oh oh oh, i so wanna see ted doing the perp walk.. pretty please with sugar on top, let it happen this week
Stings as in raids?
I wonder if he will offer them his business card like Wide Stance did?
i want to favorite the utube of the frogmarching ted
From the little I have seen the guy is goin’ down.
and in a way where he does not get a happy ending
stings as in arrest warrants. The three people who I’ve heard mentioned the most are former governor Frank Murkowski, current State Senate President Lyda Green, and former state senator Rick Halford. Both Sen. Ted Stevens and US House representative Don Young are under multiple FBI investigations, but nobody seems to have seen pieces of paper with their names on them. yet…
If Halford is indicted, it means the Feds have gone RICO.
No more music so I’ll be off to bed also.
Niteall. :-)
g’nite starbuck
nite starbuck
WOO!
That would be a real scorcher.
Gnite Starbuck.
ET! And what about dear Lisa?
i still hope that ted gets snagged. he look so good in prison orange
One thing that caught my eye was when you have a guy in freakin’ GEORGIA wanting to build highways for Alaska, there is something reallllly hinky going on.
Unless Stupie pardons him.
I wouldn’t place that bet.
forking r’s think pardons change a crook into a non-crook – of course, the r’s are wrong about a lot of things
Seeing her dad cuffed would break her heart, but I don’t think she has been touched by any of these far-reaching investigations. The only time she needed BIG cash was in her run to keep the seat her dad gave her in the 2004 election. But big oil didn’t back her much more than ex-Governor Tony Knowles, her Democratic Party opponent in 2004. Knowles is the target of an article that came out today by Alaska’s greatest muckraker, Ray Metcalfe.
et, any idea why the r’s are collapsing up there – was it an overload of hubris? they get too cocky and got sloppy?
I don’t even think Stevens and that bunch were bashful about the crap they were pulling were they?
Jinx.
I ranted elsewhere tonite, Suz.
I’ll just say HOWDY.
And wish you, the critters, and all else at FDL, well.
Economy is gettin ugly, we is headed for hard times.
If you got a carrot, I got a ‘tater.
Together, I hope we all can continue to make, stone soup for us all.
It’s the stone that counts. ;-)
wonder if he’ll take all his stuffed heads to jail with him
Blackjack and I walked on the beach here before sunset.. after I layed down with earphones,,,National Pulic Radio International had a poetry theatre, Jabberwocky The Owl and the Pussycat (Lear) and others it was so fanciful the story of an owl and a cat that fell in love went of in the sea in a tub landed on a Island and were married by a couple other animals what an imagination worth checking out! John Lithgow and another actor performed poetry in duet, They had tons of fun.
hey spidey
busted – scary when we think alike huh?
hey larue – how ya doing dood – are you gonna be able to come to the meetup? how goes the blogging?
Lookout world.
that sounds like a lovely way to end the day bigbrother. very lovely indeed.

Neighbors don’t count?

not when they are just lookie loo’s wanting to be nosy and see inside the place
are larue and spidey connected busted?
They also performed the “Monkiey’s Paw” first for me and old couple who entertained a traveller whjo had a Monkey Paw that was cursed I ment to sleep during the bsd part but whem I awoke they were working on a second wish…their son died on the first one so mom was trying to bring him back after 10 days…it was a horror thing but comic relief compared to the bushco nightmare. I am so cultured after that was some nice classical music Carmen three parts…like that Paso Doble (bullfight correda music).
…hmmmmmmm
or is my lack of any sleep last night finally showing its ugly coffee fueled head after being up way too forking long
…not me, I had a nap today : )
Now I am cornfused, upstairs it says you are responding to larue at #155, I have 155 being spiderpaws and I don’t even see Larue .
Help!
Sorry, gang – disappeared for a while to write a post on Ray Metcalfe’s article.
spidey – its a chilly 45 tonight with the fog so damp that the cold seeps right down into my bones – hows it up on your end of the north bay?
do a hard refresh – when a comment gets caught in the filters and gets freed, it can mess up the comment numbers
probably 50* and not so raw…turned the heat down about an hour ago but fog is definitly coming in
we got down to 33 last night but tonight feels colder – knowing it is the damp does not make me feel warmer – i have my heater cranked up to 65
My thermometer says 39 degrees F. Warmest at midnight in months.
(laughing) i was too tired to drive today and i could not be home during the open house today so i got in the car, drove to the other side of the park and was almost nodding off for a nice nap when the park’s caretaker came over and chatted with me until the open house was over and my agent called to ‘wake me up and let me know it was safe to come home again’.
i got in maybe an hour nap this evening before starting here again tonight.
People are talking a lot about the aerial spraying of pesticides over here scheduled to start in June for some measley moth…apparantly they already sprayed you down there one summer night last year while folks were out walking their kids in baby carriages along the boardwalk
Ha!
Sorry ’bout that spiderpaws!
that’s warmer than my 33 last nite et. forking weather is all messed up. my bulbs are starting to bloom and its not even march 1st yet.
why are you sorry busted?
For confusing you with Larue.
sprayed more in monterey – the eco warriers down there were very good in trying to get info on the spraying from the feds who were not forthcoming with safety information about its effects.
they only sprayed us once up here on the mt – but they wanna spray more for the LBAM – i think the public hearings are going to be even more contentious in santa cruz county than they were in monterey county – which were pretty acrimonious.
…who’s Larue?
Good evening and good night

larue is a commenter who also listens to the pig – i am hoping he is able to come to this meetup – he was unable to attend the last one
…meetings here were standing room only and people who couldn’t get in screaming on the sidewalk in the cold…
Wheres my Nyquil?
hey maddy
…where you left your apostrophe
monterey county meetings were lead story in the local news many nights. the pebble beach and carmel folks were especially vocal about the dangers of the spraying.
Lol, I’m terrible about that.
Anybody got a birthday today?
Mine just passed the 31st of last month. That would have been interesting.
Dick cheney’s birthday…
I did not get anyone admitting to be a february birthday last nite – i hope it was not the happy birthday part of the cartoon that scared them away. it could be the association with the shooter sharing their birthday month…*g*
If Carmel & Pebble couldn’t stop it, then we can’t either..they plan to spray Tiburon & Belvedere first…
Suzzanne I wear long john bottoms and a wool stocking cap on an off throughout the evening. It might make you more comfortable does most folks who grew up around the ocean with all the dampness. Cleaning showing your home and doimg all the post is not allow a lot of shuteye naps are really good and the twilight zone between awake and snooze is a nice place to be. Tea takes the jag off of the coffee and get some walk if you can for some cardio. You know just a reminder. All the politics is draining.
I get up and read Jane, Christy and Marcy that takes up time then I am on Al Gores book Assault on Reason and a CEQA workbook and all the local politics I have been doing for 12 years…by the way one of my friends jaw dropped when he heard what you are offering for $319K he does mortgages for a living.
Gahd… An entire deck of Grim Reapers!
Aquarians are notoriously crazy – like the unibomber..ruled by Uranus
Yer serious?
Now I really don’t like that guy.
I forgot my manners, enjoy if you want, it’s good stuff…good night again and dream of peace.
got my long johns on under the flannel jammies that are under the sweats and have the ever present knit watch cap on my head. i was joking earlier that before moving up here, i never wore sock or a hat – now, the heavier the better :)
nite maddy
g’nite maddy – but i’m not sure what manners you forgot:)
Serious business… Monterey is overwintering site for the beautiful Monarch Butterfly I hope they leave them alone!!! I will e-mail my butterfly buds right now.
Nite Maddy.
I got some of those wool mittens with the finger ends open a few weeks ago, for when I blog in my shop, which doesn’t stay very warm. They’re GREAT!
Well I’m off to read The Old Way…the next chapter is on poison arrows : )
Sweet Dreams to all the folks who need a good long sleep
You know who you are
*sigh* i saw on tv a set of gloves like that but they are forking heated – for use while typing is what i thought.
fork, my brain just turned to mush
Thank you and sleep well.
g’nite spidey – sorry to hear you will get sprayed :(
that’s it for me tonight pups. thanks for hanging with me tonight. i’m forking fried and will be looking like that boom picture busted posted last nite if i don’t leave now.

E-Mailed a heads up to the Monarch Butterfly West to contact the Cal Poly professor who heads up protection and three others. Don’t mess with the monarch and a host of others Bushco is nuts.
good night
Unfortunately, it’s the day before. I oughta know. (Sorry I didn’t catch this earlier.)
