SEIU International’s decision to stay out of the presidential endorsement game and let each state decide what they want to do may be coming to and end.

The executive board is going to discuss a potential endorsement of Barack Obama tonight on a conference call. They had a lot on the line in the Donna Edwards race — to the tune of $600,000 — and were under a lot of pressure from party insiders to support the Incumbency Protection Racket, this despite the fact that people like Al Wynn were regularly voting for legislation that crippled the unions (like the Walmart sweetheart deal). Their willingness to take on the party establishment is good news for progressives whose strength depends on working in coalition with each other to challenge the anti-worker, business-friendly Blue Dog legislation coming out of congress.

Anyway, with the Donna Edwards victory safely under their belt, the International has decided to take up the subject of the Obama endorsement. If it is successful, their ability to mobilize the resources of their members in the remaining primary states could be significant.

Update: UFCW may be endorsing Obama too.
