Shall we compare him to a Summer’s Day?*

"John is so sharp," said former Senator Alan K. Simpson of Wyoming. "I think he knows that whatever his future is, it can never go anywhere unless he’s seen as supportive of the party and supportive of the president, and anything else will abort whatever he may have in mind."
Straight Talk indeed.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), a former prisoner of war, has spoken strongly in favor of implementing the Army Field Manual standard. When confronted today with the decision of whether to stick with his conscience or cave to the right wing, McCain chose to ditch his principles and instead vote to preserve waterboarding
UPDATE: But looky here in the Moonie Times:
John McCain’s campaign manager yesterday said the candidate will not pander for conservative support
I’m sure this juxtaposition will be critically analyzed by the major media, rather than just us DFH’s.
* or maybe just to a Summer’s Eve?

Let’s give McCain a break. He’s old. Maybe he just got confused.
Sharp as a marble, that boy.
In the http://www.ajc.com, Mike Luckovich’s cartoon has the same theme.
” When confronted today with the decision of whether to stick with his conscience or cave to the right wing, “
At what price power? How does he justify his begging? Do we want such a weak man who would sell out his principles for power in the White House?
LOL. I may steal that one…!
It’s a pretty disappointing day for the papers. Of course, the baseball crap gets the big headline. But you have to dig through the articles on the torture bill to find out that McCain voted for it, and then, it’s accompanied by a blurb from his press spokesman about how he’s all for protecting us.
And nothing about Wexler and Boxer going after Rice yesterday.
I hope it is in big letters that he is anticipating or planning a 100 years war. What a cash cow that should be. And the better opportunity to practice the torture he now embraces.
That’s what I did, Marion Can’t claim any originality. You’re welcome to it AFAIC.
AFAIC?????
Nothing will dominate the news like the coming wedding of Princess Jenna.
Link’s not working because you accidentally made the comma part of the URL. Here’s a more direct working version: Mike Luckovich cartoon.
Anyone who can get Chris Matthews’ flag
to run up the pole will get my vote.
Even if they smell of rank hypocrisy,
not English leather and Aqua-velva.
Sorry. As Far As I’m Concerned. I do try to make it a practice though to not use abbreviations that a reader couldn’t find on the first screen of Google search for that particular abbreviation.
Thanks Bilbo
looking at two old, overweight, gray haired round men with their armes rapped around each other, head on chest and snuggling is torture right there
Bipartisanship is the new black.
If only President McCain appoints Bob Kerry and David Boren to his cabinet,
all of our problems will be solved.
Arriving late. Has Penn’s quality voters/significant states comments to the NYT and WaPo been given the roasting and skewering it deserves?
If not, join us around the campfire at Dkos. Bring your own skewer. Marchmellows provided by Mr. Penn. In fact he is the marshfellow.

Late, running but not so late that I can’t say JANE+PUPS you are my valentine. Actually today is the anniversary of my coming to the lake. So Happy Valentineaversary everyone.
G’morning. It is, isn’t it? What’s the scuttlebutt about my man Edwards endorsing Hillary? Say it isn’t so.
Yup, he’s a douche, alright.
Speaking of Hillary’s advisors, did anyone else see Terry McAuliffe hemming and hawing, dodging and weaving, on the Today Show? I detest him and his ilk.
I decided not to go there, but glad you did. LOL.
Mary Matalin on Morning Joe- “Rush is a genius and is helping McCain by slamming him”
Down is up, wet is dry, etc.
These people really believe their own nonsense.
For the sake of whats left of our country they must go.
She just closed her segment by saying “Happy first anniversary of the surge.”
I kid you not.
Thanks, reading comments at work and am short on time. Will de-lurk no more.
Down here in the trenches, in an office where I’m the official feral Democrat, I’ve trained them to understand that I will now never refer to McCain as anything but “Snuggles.” Even the true believers snicker…
Mary Matalin on Morning Joe- “Rush is a genius and is helping McCain by slamming him”
Which means then that by endorsing Mary Matalin’s candidate, Mitt Romney, Rush was giving him the kiss of death.
I’m sure that Joe Scarborough managed not to follow up on this obvious line of illogic from her.
I hear Lipator will do that to you – and speaking with a forked tongue, as well.
Not only did he not question this nonsense, he fed into it.
Sorry for the double negative, but y’all know what I mean.
But will McCain’s true love veto the bill? I can’t wait to see how W tries to spin this one. If he vetoes outright, that should (I know, the MSM never gets it right) generate a lot of attention. It certainly will generate a lot of attention outside of the US. On the other hand, maybe he will sign and use a bit of pixie dust in his signing statement.
Re: McCain
I agree with others downstairs that we should tread lightly with the age cracks. There’s plenty of other substantive things to wail away at without stooping to that level.
You can’t complain about Sen. Clinton’s shabby treatment in the press because she’s a woman, and then attack McCain because of his age.
We should leave hypocrisy to the Repugs; they’re so much better at it!
I will never get used to that photo, never. It is so demeaning. You could photo-shop a puppy’s head on McCain and it would still look real. Poor guy must have suffered terribly in that camp to degrade himself in public so.
Age isn’t exactly irrelevant in a Presidential Race
Good love day to all,
And it sure looks like the lilly white audience behind them is showing some love. Peace now, damn it!
McCain will sometimes come across as confused on the campaign trail. If that is because of his age, it is relevant to this election.
Agreed, since we have had a President who became more and more disoriented by Alzheimer’s (which was also kept secret by his staff). The results of old age can affect the ability to rule.
Hugging the man whose operatives caused so much pain to his young daughter that she has been hidden since, that’s 8 years of her life in a political family.
Craven ambition over family pride and fatherly love.
Ignoranus = asshole + ignoramous (h/t to WaPo Mensa contests) is the least bad thing I can say.
So the ol maverick voted for torture. And if I read the above picture correctl, finally embraces Larry Craig GOPness. His conversion to gooper asshole is complete.
I realize neither campaign can afford to say or think this way, but I don’t work for neither campaign, so here goes.
If you can’t win this election, against this weak candidate, we might as well all move to Canada.
Really.
This election shouldn’t even be close. There is so much material on McCain’s
flip flopping available, not to mention his “100 year war” comment, even I could put the ads together.
Do the pictures represent John McCain’s ”Come to Jesus!” moment?
Will she be wearing a glow in the dark depleted uranium tiara? You know that stuff is harmless?
It looks like more of a Satanic moment.
let’s look at Reagan, Alzheimer’s set in and he was not the president toward the end of his second term, bush Sr was
I agree age is relevant, but it can be discussed without “Cocoon” or “Hospice” jokes. And just because Pat Buchanan said it doesn’t make it ok.
To paraphrase what I’m sure many of our mothers told us, “If Pat Buchanan jumped off a bridge…”
George’s favorite philosopher once said something about how little a man would profit if he gained the whole world but lost his soul. Funny how they forget this basic stuff they had pounded into their heads in Sunday School.
The only thing we know is that she will never wear a uniform in service to theis nation.
we are feilding a candidate that will energize their base to come out in masse
Good morning Attaturk, pups!
I think you owe me a coke, perris. *g*
I’d look over the side and give him polite golf claps.
That’s what VP Jeb is hoping for…providing that Cheney decides to give up the VP office.
I believe you are right maydaze…that coke will come with rum I might add
friday night good for you?
1480 Progressive talk …. there was a discussion of changing the picture of their billboards to this one and still keep the “Had Enough? tag…
It is an ongoing “joke” on Jeff Farias (who interviewed Hugh) show… it is “My friends” this and that…
I’d be right next to you with scorecards at the ready!
Sounds great! *g*
A variant I’ve used for years. Maybe from Foghorn Leghorn?
OK, what psychopathic wingnut will John McCain be forced to make his running mate? He was toying with Tim Pawlenty, but he’s too sane to be considered (plus he couldn’t even deliver his home state for McCain in the Minnesota caucus).
Jerry Nadler’s talking FISA on CSPAN 1
True dat, but aren’t we fielding a candidate that’s gonna energize our base as well? In addition, so far we’re doing very well with independents, unlike in 2000 & 2004.
“You’re a chicken and I’m a chickenhawk!”
I’m not coming up with any names when I think about it, I can’t believe it would be Huckabee.
I keep hearing the name JEB tho
you do know we have bigots in our party too, right?
I was talking yesterday with some people who claim to be democrats and they are finding every excuse possible (except race of course) to make believe why obama is not gonna be as good as mccain
if we win this cycle, whoever is president will be regarded as one of the greatest that ever lives
if we loose, we will be forced to face the brutal reality that we helped them win
I am torn, so torn that we are making it as easy as we can possibly make it by fielding either obama or hillary, both of these candidates will be among the best presidents ever
if they get there
My money’s on JEBlite. Haven’t you seen how prominent Charlie Crist has been in McStain’s pack of puppies? He’s always trying to crowd Lieberturd and Lindsay off the stage.
Let me take this opportunity to wish all my fellow FDLers:
A HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!
him, mitt, or jeb, though if they make it jeb then nothing short of world war 4 will get them elected and even that might not do the trick
This ageism thing bothers me. I do mostly snark. Look at this post, what is it implying about Bush & McCain? If you want to really be offended it’s drawing a homoerotic conclusion that might be offensive to some.
That’s ok, but making a “age” joke in any form is wrong?
I think after all these years of blogging, I have a fairly good idea of where the “line” is and what I can do and what I can’t, what I wouldn’t do and what I would.
if he is smart it will be blumberg, if bloomberg will take it
that will be a tough ticket to beat I might add
McCain’s age is a real factor and I don’t think making fun of it is stooping down to the Republican level. Getting a point across by making jokes about it is fair game. It’s not the same thing as making bitch jokes about Hillary, which I agree is disgusting.
McCain could be 80 years old when he leaves office. That is OLD. My father lost his mind and then his life when he was the age McCain is now. My mother is two years younger than him and I can’t let her watch the kids alone. My neighbor is in his 70’s and if he’s driving, you better run. Not to mention, the generational differences. He came of age in the 50’s. That’s a long time ago. In fact, he was old when Cocoon came out.
CrazyTrain meets MoneyTrain
McCain campaign advisor McKinnon says he will quit if Obama wins the Dem nomination.
Sounds like a train wreck to me.
I think McCain is too spiteful to even consider Huckabee as a running mate.
This country survived and is still suffering from the oldest president this country has had – Reagan….. Just exactly who was running this country when his dementia became full blown?
And as we have such a GREAT media… will they know that McBush has run off the rails?
Just remember that McCain rhymes with insane… ok those who can write poetry have at it…
And the same to you, Biodun.
I linked this music vid last year- just as good listening to it on 2/14/08…
A St. Valentine’s Day love song written by Prine for, as they say, the rest of us:
John Prine & Iris Dement- In Spite of Ourselves
Remember “The President’s Brain has gone missing”
At my house he has been called “Gohn Insain” for months.
Okay, since you asked:
There was an old man named McCain
Who everyone knew was insane.
He courted a mob
To give him a job
And the country just went down the drain.
That’s a great limerick!
Thanks!
Elmore and I read that book the summer of 2004…. scared the BeJevis out of us.
I would love to have Justin Franks do the same profile of McBush.
Marion in Savannah @76
Standing on chair clapping!
“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
– Mahatma Gandhi
“Make it 100 waterboardings!” McCain can go to hell.
Thanks for that link…
McClatchy’s “You Write the Caption” contest this week has McCain, in a business suit, looking at an elephant holding the top half of a caveman outfit and and a bloody club. You supply the caption for the elephant. I’m sure you FirePups can supply some really good ones.
Very welcome. Thanks for “Human Capital in the Digital City: A Few Questions about Class and Netroots.”
Excellent :)
anyone think holy joe will me mccbush’s running mate?
How come no one talks about the real reasons that people torture: to humilate and pacify populations and strike fear into them.
no.
In keeping with the “nonpartisan” buzz of this campaign season? Sure, why not.
bingo, it’s not to get information, you don’t get information you can use through torture, it’s to create the envirnment of fear
por que?
Extracting confessions. That’s why you torture. It’s because it breaks the spirit of human beings.
To pacify populations by striking fear into them. A theme in The Shock Doctrine, I’m reading it now (finally).
For a long time after 911 and the terra terra Red alerts and Military in my civilian airport many Americans were suffering from PSDT.
That is the purpose of it. Putting fluffy names on things… enhanced interrogation techniques…. wow… sounds like a nice thing doesn’t it?
Listening to progressive talk radio, people are afraid that BushCo will declare marshal law and never leave office, afraid to to participate in protests and get on the no fly list.
So it is working.
Blue Texan has a nice new post ready upstairs! Sorry I can’t link, but my problem with spinning is still in effect! I have a feeling it’s more than just me. Something in the programming of the latest changes doesn’t like me and others.
Will this be the next thing our congress will waist breath on?
Specter: Belichick Was Taping Since 2000
WHAT about BushCo spying on ALL AMERICANS since early 2001?
Re: McCain’s age: it is a legitimate concern.
As a working person a few years his senior, I know it now takes considerably more effort for me to stay on top of things than it did when I was ‘merely’ 70. Though I’m fit, a 12 hour day, which was once my norm, is exhausting. Even with all the assistance and perqs of the office, anyone McCain’s age will experience a similar (perhaps worse) decline.[p]
While there are many very wise elders, McCain is not one of them – so absent vitality, how exactly would the country benefit from a McCain Presidency? What would he be except a placeholder for the likes of Mitt or Jeb?
Great song! John wrote this for a Billy Bob Thornton movie entitled Daddy & Them in which he appeared. Mrs. Bilbo hates the movie, Bilbo loves it (but then Bilbo’s taste has always been a little off kilter).
I happen to like “Daddy & Them,” too. But then I’m also a fan of Troma films (Lloyd Kaufman is an old friend. Hi Lloyd, I know you read FDL) ;->
Was in a bit of a hurry @ 73- spelling is Iris DeMent.
Before I hit the road to work, a recommendation for the seriously warped “below grade B” film fans among us…
This Troma movie rocks for Valentine’s Day-
Tromeo & Juliet
Just put it in my Netflix queue. Thanks for the suggestion.
whoa, that hug: mccain looks like he won’t let go of georgie.
