The Protect America Act sunsets on Saturday, and the House stood up to the threat of a Bush veto of an extension and adjourned for President's Day weekend without giving in to Lil' Boots' fear mongering.
As Nancy Pelosi said in her superbly adult press conference today, the underlying FISA law is still in place and if Bush didn't think he had everything he needed in order to "protect America" he wouldn't have threatened the veto, and the House Republicans would have stayed and voted instead of engaging in grandstanding chickenshittery by walking out and holding a pissy little press conference to whine.

And so Mr. Speaker, I ask unanimous consent that we put into the record at this point CNN.com news, 'Phone Companies Cut FBI Wiretaps Due to Unpaid Bills.' A lot's been said about what some call 'patriotic phone companies.' Are these the same companies that cut off the FBI FISA wiretaps because the FBI hadn't paid its phone bill? This is breaking news. I ask unanimous consent that we examine this issue and that we include it in the ones in the 21-day period.

Perhaps they can clarify the one piece of language allowing warrant-less taps on two foreign subjects iff the call is routed through US switchers, which is, after all, the reason FISA needed fixing in the first place, allegedly.

The media reported (if you want to call it that) that Boehner orchestrated his walk out during the FISA vote.
Only problem is that it’s not the truth. He orchestrated his walk out during the contempt hearings just prior to vote and stood there and flat out lied that it was about FISA.
The walk out was just prior to the vote on contempt of Meiers & Bolton not about the FISA bill at all.
All it took for the media to buy into it was one John Boehner standing there lying about what they were walking out about.
All this was verified by Wexler shortly after but you probably haven’t heard that in the traitional media yet.
I have been around politics for a long very long time and these guys are getting away with murder because the media is to lazy to do research.

There was one female republican, yesterday at the Clemens hearing who said that the federal government wastes billions of dollars, so she objected to the Clemons hearing. Does anyone know the Name of the female Congresswomen? And does she do any work the other 364 days of the year to combat waste?

I agree with you, but let’s give credit where credit is due: the House Democratic Leadership simply refused to bring the FISA extension to a vote. That was the only real way to derail it, considering the connivance of the Bush (Blue) Dogs. So I think Nancy deserves a little credit here.

What a lovely day it is! My sweet FedEx delivery lady knocked at my door this afternoon and handed me a wonderful package. Whe I opened it, what to my dazed eyes should appear but a red heart shape box of dark chocolate candies.
I am feeling good. They are from my daughter who continues the tradition that started when she was a child and didn’t get special cards like some of the other kids. Her feelings were hurt. Valentine was her least favorite day. So I started a tradition that began very simple. Every year I got a lovely box of chocolates and roses for us to enjoy and prepared a special dinner of her favorite things. By the time she was eleven we continued the box of chocolates and roses but now went to a five star French restaurant for dinner. It was sassy dress-up time.
It’s now the holiday she remembers with the greatest fondness.

As Sander and CTut both mention, the missile defense test have been spectacular failures to date, even when the test have been slanted as much as possible towards success. The group attempting a shoot down have known the time of launch, trajectory, speed, etc and still have been unable to hit the moving target. This satellite will be moving much faster and in a far more difficult trajectory to hit.

actually, I’d guess that this will be much closer to a controlled test,no? They can certainly identify the satellite and know where it’s coming from. There will be no attempt to confuse or fool the targeting sensors. Seems like it’s pretty close to the set up where they have managed to hit the target twice.
that said, it does seem at least pretty likely that they’ll miss. And even if they don’t, they’ll give away a lot of info during the attempt. Seems like there must be something on the satellite that they really don’t want someone else recovering.

Actually, as a practical person, I believe that we do need solutions and I think that she’s laid some laid out some of those in more detail than some people want to hear, and continues to do so.
After the primary, the Rs have no choice but to try to focus the issue on terror and war again. You can bet your bottom dollar they’re going to do that, although I shudder to think of how. So - assuming the debate is going to shift to terror and war - who is better positioned to win the GE?

I made those too for the Feast of Decadent Chocolate for church using Fair Trade cocoa from Equal Exchange. I had to do that after researching and writing the sermon on chocolate. So we had at least one guilt-free chocolate goodie on the common table.
I will say that it was a very messy thing to make.
I think it will break up and they will claim they hit it or it couldn’t be hit or it didn’t matter in the end. There is no track record for them to do this except in their computer models.
Heck we live in a cyber world anyway.

At the same time, we have to remember who is in the house with her: SHE’S GOT WHINY ASS TITTY BABY REPUBLICANS WHO ONLY CARE ABOUT THEMSELVES, THEIR EGOS, THEIR BUSHITLER & CHENEYMEISTER, and will resort TO DIRTY TRICKS AND TEMPER TANTRUMS TO GET WHAT THE LITTLE BABIES WANT! I don’t envy her at all. I think we do not understand the conflicting pulls that congressional leaders deal with. A week ago, I went to a lunch where Rangel spoke. He said that the reason why an extension of unemployment & food stamps were not part of the stimulus bill (despite meeting all the requirements for being the most important things congress could do for short run bang-for-the-buck) was because Paulson told him W would veto it. It would be irresponible for Ds not to pass a stinulus bill PDQ. So Rangel & other Ds took that as a given & didn’t fight for it, no matter how much sense it made. Knowing the facts (assuming Rangle was honest), I agree with the compromise.

The only part of the stimulus package I don’t like is the fact that the checks will be coming out in May (last I heard). How the hell is that going to help people in my state who need the money to cover their heating costs? If people get the check in May and buy a stereo, the republicans will then say, “See? The liberals of this country only spend their money on frivolous things”, or something like that. I don’t see why they can’t send the money out now. I honestly don’t need it, because I’m doing okay staying ahead, but there are many who are not able to and need it NOW. Very frustrating…
We can get 150,000 troops on the ground in Iraq in no time flat, but when it comes to helping out the needy during the winter….it takes months to get paper checks out!

With due acknowlegement that could amount to kabuki rationalization. But still, we criticize without knowing the real pressures.

The need to compromise depends on the circumstances. The D leadership have been slow to recognize the circustances that mean they don’t need to compromise, but they live in a bubble an that means a delayed reaction.
True. My point was that she’s much better than what Hastert did under his leadership. He was the asshole who would give George Bush the bill George wanted to sign and not the bill that was passed by both Houses. At least Nancy isn’t playing games like that. She may not be great at seeing the future sometimes in order to figure out what to do now, but all in all, I think she’s less dangerous than what the House has witnessed over the years.
Again, I don’t agree with everything she’s done. There are times when I’ve called her office screaming. One time I called and asked one of her interns, “On a scale of 1-10 with ten being the highest, what is Nancy’s overall opinion of the Constitution today?”. LOL See? Kiddo, you’re still here? Lady and the Tramp was my daughter’s favorite. She became sick when she was 11 months, and watched it over and over and over. The only video she wanted to see. It is such a wonderful and special movie. And to think the artists did it all by hand.
I think it will interesting to see how the dynamics in congress changes after the presidential nominee is selected.

Turn Maine Blue did such a great job during the Maine Caucus. I was glued to it and happy to see that Valley Girl was too! The whole intention of TMB was to be the go-to blog for this election year and it definitely has reached that status for sure.

I’m with you on that one. My mother and father have some long time friends who moved to New Hampshire years ago. Their oldest daughter joined the military and when she came out she met a guy and had 2 kids. Well, her husband ended up being a white supremacist and moved Rachel and the kids into the mountains for years without letting Rachel have any contact with anyone. Scary. Somehow she was able to get away from him and Rachel’s two daughters met their grandparents for the first time a few years ago.
Give me Maine any day (or Vermont!)!!! Not to say there aren’t weird people here. I would say most of them are harmless. :-)

It used to be a small place next to the Wine shop (nearly downtown). Now it’s much bigger, across from Granville Lumber, but still on 15 (at the very top of Tenney Hill).
Okay then!– I think I am thinking of the same place. Parking lot in the front, and on the right as you face the building. Gotta say I never would have guessed it was a blue collar bar- looks kinda pseudo upscale to me.
