This from Stark Raving Dad:

The John 3:16 man is Rockin’ Rollen Stewart, “a born-again Christian whose
mission in life is to get his signs (and his mug) on national TV as often as possible, the better to spread the word of the Lord. Only in America.”
(according to `More of the Straight Dope’, by Cecil Adams.)

The article goes on to explain that before he was born again, in 1980, his
main interest was being “the most famous person in the world no one knows
about.” For years he was the guy seen on telecasts of golf tournaments (of all things — Ed.) with the multicolored Afro wig. This earned him the
nickname of `Rainbow Man’.

The Rainbow Man/John 3:16 is a look at the rise and fall of (Rock N) Rollen Stewart, also known as the Rainbow Man. The film begins with some brief biographical information on Stewart, from his humble beginnings in various jobs as well as his personal relationships as he grew up.

Stewart was just another nobody until he started to get national attention on television when he started to dress in bad leisure suits and/or loin clothes and a rainbow afro wig at various basketball and football games around the country.

Movie review

There’s a group of biblenuts who dedicate their lives to holding up banners that say John 3:16 at sporting events, or on The Simpsons (Michael Jackson and John Elway episodes, e.g.). It’s actually a Lennon/McCartney tune that never got published.

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald. striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevice, right at the base of this glacier. And do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga gunga - gunga galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.
