I know many of you have a preference in the Democratic race...or did but your candidate has now dropped out. I also know that for many in the blog or activist world tensions run high between two people who are both pretty good candidates all-in-all, though not perfect.
But today is Abraham Lincoln's 199th birthday, and how fitting that the locations of so much Civil War strife are holding primaries.
The Democratic Party, then the party of State's Rights and long the old remnants of the Confederacy, has as its remaining contestants an African-American and a Woman -- two groups disenfranchised, for the most part, during Lincoln's lifetime in either most, or all, of the nation. For all its struggles, how great for the Nation and the Party. What an inspiring sign of progress.
And then there is the virtually certain Republican nominee.
*Note: photo may not actually be of Lincoln but I cannot confirm.

zed…and I was not lying in wait.
The zed thing is stupid
I would just like to have a real-live GROWN UP for a leader, who actually sticks their neck out to…um..LEAD.
Leisure Guy!!1!!
even a blind squirrel gets an acorn now and then!
I wouldn’t compare Obama to MLK,Jr, but he sure as hell is embodying “The Dream”.
attaturk!
The picture looks more like Wayne Newton than Lincoln.
The Republican party of Lincoln’s time more closely resembled today’s Democratic party than today’s Republican party.
Happy birthday, Abe.
It’s not lost on me that on the Democratic side there is diversity in our candidates, whereas, on the republican side there’s more of the same: dumbass white guys who could care less about the country or about the people outside our borders across the planet.
Abraham Lincoln said:
Not much prescient, was he???
I have to say, I’m reading a bio of FDR right now and there was one thing that seemed pretty certain even to Democrats in the Summer and Fall of 1932…that FDR was not a “principled strong leader”.
So, the dog & pony show is not a great place to judge this characteristic, sadly.
John McCain:
Rest of the story: John McCain was one of those doing the leading.
St McBush thanks doG for the passive voice.
OT: Today is FISA day in the Senate, and Glenzilla is at his most eloquent.
Those acorns are few and far between for this squirrel!
Yeah, but how can you pass up a Lincoln-impersonator in a car (hopefully a Lincoln)?
Yeah, I hear you.
What a candidate will *do* to get elected is a strong indication of their character, in my opinion.
Perhaps that is why John Edwards decided to withdraw. I don’t want to put him on a pedestal, but perhaps he couldn’t find it in himself to go that far–i.e., saying that he admired Reagan to get the far right vote, ya know?
He doesn’t look a day over 40.
Intense bread making day today during the FISA kabuki
You do realize that Obama did not say he admired Reagan’s policies, don’t you? I admire the way Republicans have a unique ability to get their message out. But I definitely do not admire their message.
Why aren’t the right wingers complaining about Abe Lincoln having a day of remembrance like they do when MLK’s b-day comes around? Huh. I wonder.
Nice FISA diary that concisely spells it out:

Call your Senators and Congresscritters and let them know:
It was wonderful to listen to Dodd last night.
Yes, that really was a prescient quotation. I hadn’t seen it before. And it was his own party which, shortly after his death, gave us the “gilded age,” which seems to be the utopian period for Republicans.
Jesus built his hot rod!
excellent idea.
and all that pounding of the dough is, i think, theraputic.
and a vote against cloture is the way to vote against bad fisa law.
Morning all. Slow connection, so joining late. Big deadline, so spending little time with you (sniff).
For Obama supporters who want to honor two Senators from Ill. at once, here is a way to do it for the small cost of $5.01,i.e. in the currency that is ABE’s (although multiples thereof are accepted.)
The original version of the proposal is with links:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/2/8/113939/8607
Listening to voices of reason, Dodd, Feingold, Durbin to name the few, make me so mad that the other 90 plus Senators are complete bloody sell outs.
I called my idiots, sununu and greggggg yesterday but it is like trying to change the bark on a tree.
somebody has to do it
hot rod lincoln
How tragic that the Party of Lincoln became the Party of Bush. If there’s any honor left in that group, they would disband.
OT from Rep. Robert Wexler:
Our Constitution is under threat and the most basic principle of checks and balances is being undermined. Not since Watergate has a president so openly disregarded the will of Congress.
During hearings in the Judiciary Committee yesterday, I told Attorney General Michael Mukasey that I called for impeachment hearings because of the stonewalling and blatant abuses of the Bush Administration. He responded by stating that he will NOT enforce a contempt of Congress citation against Harriet Miers and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten for refusing to testify before Congress. The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7M9sjRLCtQ
Alberto Gonzales may be long gone, but the Bush Administration continues its executive overreach with the new Attorney General.
We can debate the need for Impeachment hearings. We can argue its effects on the election or our agenda. But one thing is abundantly clear:
If Congress’ right to require testimony is undermined, then our country’s leaders - Democrat, Republican, or Independent - will be immune from accountability.
The power of the subpoena - to call officials before us - is one of the most fundamental safeguards in our system of government. To have it effectively discarded -
…
Per wikiquote.org, that quote is misattributed to Lincoln:
199 is the new 150!
And watching it rise restful!!!
At least it’s not Cornyn and Hutchison. (He says wiping shins, after pissing into the wind.)
I hope when Dodd takes the floor today he reads Glenn’s column in its entirety. Who would have imagined it would take a Democratic senate to do what the Repugs couldn’t. Legitamize unlawful behavior. I am just sick.
As Glenn Greenwald points out this morning, the same bill died when the Republicans were running the Senate. That puts a chilling perspective on what sellouts Pelosi and Reid really are.
Good morning from L.A. Thanks for the pic of Lincoln in the Lincoln, attaturk.
In honor of Potomac Primaries today, a photo of Abe on the battlefield @ Antietam near Sharpsbug MD:
Lincoln on Antietam Battlefield
(Have seen another pic somewhere of Lincoln & Gen. McClellan taken together near Antietam Creek)
On a lighter note, Uno took the hound group. It’s been about 438 dog years since a beagle took best in show, so let’s all pull for him tonight.
i posted a short clip on youtubes (where dodd quotes glenn). and would like to post a couple more if you and/or other firepups have any suggestions.
Man, I wore out my “Live From The Armadillo World HQ” album.
duh.
here’s the clip:

That’s the prettiest little tuck driver I’ve ever seen.
The Commander in an unedited music vid “Everybody’s Doing it”
I saw the video and he definitely was gushing with admiration for “Benedict Ronald” Reagan. He said the Pukes were the party of ideas.
Reagan announced his candidacy in Philadelphia, Mississippi specifically to tell the racists “I’m one of you”. He made it acceptable for government officials to use phrases like “welfare queen”.
There’s no excuse for it, so quit trying to excuse it.
You ever read “Star Making Machinery”? Great book about the Commander Cody and their politics.
The Reps were the ones putting out ideas. Not good ideas, but ideas nonetheless. The Dems were reacting to the Rep’s ideas. They were effecitve at getting their message out, making their ideas seem acceptable. If you actually looked at their ideas, they were, and are, terrible.
I very much enjoyed watching and listening to Senator Dodd state the obvious in such an authoritative and eloquent way last night. His dedication to the rule of law will never be questioned. I loved the fact that he said future generations will look back to this time and will revel in or mourn the decisions being made. Legacies are being built.
No but I’ll be looking for it. Thanks.
How many times have we sung “Down seeds and stems again, too” with genuine lament?
I don’t think you understand how much damage “centrists” do to the progressive movement. I have often heard conservatives saying things like “even Joe Lieberman, a democrat…” or “even Pat Moynahan, a democrat…”. These people who betray our cause from the inside do much more damage than someone like Bush or Rove, who can be clearly identified with the right.
Even though I quit 15 years ago. He came through a few years back on a solo tour. We were shootin the shit at break and I asked him if he still lived in the Bay Area? He said, “Hell no, those California smoking laws ran me to Saratoga New York”! I saw him in Bloomington Illinois the night Oakland won the world series and they were huge A’s fans so they wouldn’t play until the game was over. Oakland won and they “ripped it up and balled tonight”!
Attaturk; many of us don’t think we have “two pretty good candidates”. That’s just desperation Hillary-speak for the people who are now trying to hang onto Obama’s coattails, as it looks like he may be pulling away.
We have one EXCELLENT candidate, and one republican-lite, especially, on the key issue of the war. From which most of our economic problems derive.
Lumping Obama and Clinton together, as if they were little or no difference between them is nonsense. If Obama takes Maryland and Virginia and D.C. today, it will be fair to say that Clinton is being systematically rejected by a majority of democrats, and the glaring next question is: If this is happening to her with democrats, what will happen in the general?
It’s a rhetorical question; we’ll get killed, and by a republican, John McCain, who will be little more than a sacrificial goat for Obama.
Obama and Clinton are NOT the same, and one hell of a lot of democratic voters are obviously on to that fact. :o)
That’s definitely some Amish guy. But what’s he doing in a car?
Purple double dome
It may be my neighbor.
I’m glad somebody finally said it.
This a.m.’s compare & contrast moment:
Visiting Antietam- 1862
Visiting Iraq- 2003
Visiting Baghdad- 2007
Your probably right. So lets see exactly how much arrogance and insult it would take for about half of the Democratic base to tell the other half to shove it up its ass in November.
Agreed. Only one of them had published two autobiographies by the time they turned 45, the first at the age of 34.
yes, but do they have inny or outty belly buttons?
I’ve never seen him live. I’m jealous.
I will, however, brag that my only Dead Show was the first release of the “View From The Vault” series. Damn what a show!
Wigwam@57…whatever THAT means.
BTW; only one of them stood and applauded lustily, when george bush was slathering on the “surge accomplished” bullshit a few nights ago.
Were YOU applauding, while you watched that?
Sometimes ya just gotta say WTF.
Set list for said show:
Cold Rain And Snow ; Wang Dang Doodle ; Jack-A-Roe ; Big River > Maggie’s Farm ; Row Jimmy ; Black Throated Wind ; Tennessee Jed ; The Music Never Stopped
Two Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower ; Estimated Prophet ; Dark Star [10:58] > Drums > Space > Stella Blue > Turn On Your Lovelight
Encore It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue
Dwight Yoakam opened
Crosstimbers@56; not to worry; we haven’t chosen a candidate yet. When that happens (especially, if the candidate is chosen in the primaries, and not by the DNC) we’ll support them. :o)
selise, thank you so much!
as always, but extra special thanks for capturing and posting Dodd from last night for us U.S.
I set up a digg for it, pups -let’s get other people tuned into this debate anyway we can.
and don’t forget Attaturk
The new debate format, see which candidates gets the zed.
That actually reminds of another time a candidate spoke to an issues of importance to me. Seen here in this clip (h/t CHS and AFJ)
Is there a link for that? I’d like to watch that.
Still, if your guess is correct, it will happen without rubbing anyone’s nose in it.
Was Hornsby on keys?
Oh yeah. And Vince Welnick. If you check out the DVD, and you should, Bruce is just absolutely having the time of his life.
Saw them in Charlotte with that line up. I have the Truckin to Buffalo and The Grateful Dead Movie. I don’t know if you’ve seen that but it was filmed when they thought they might break up. There is an interview with some kid just raising hell about what a ripoff it is to make a movie and another guy saying, “man in 20 years you are going to be soooo glad they did this”!
OT Breaking MSNBC: Press van for Mike Huckabee ran out of gas this AM
Yeah, that show was one of the best things entertainment-wise I’ve ever experienced and to have a DVD documenting it is much more than nostalgic.
I went to that show with veteran, Deadheads who kept coming up to me saying how lucky I was to have that show as my first. Jerry was healthy and they were in rare form.
Crosstimbers@68;
IF it happens, the posting about Hillary’s track record, relative to her becoming our nominee, should become much reduced.
Of course, if Obama can run the table, or close to it, there’s still the little matter of keeping her off the ticket altogether. Since the name “Clinton” on the touchscreen, either top or bottom, will register about the same reaction to a ton of voters.
Following your great Lincoln quote link, I found two more that hit me as pertinent:
“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
“My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.”
While everyone is quoting Abraham Lincoln, the great emancipator, let me quote a Hillary Clinton operative Governor Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania as race baiting again becomes a Clinton divide and conquer strategy.
” You’ve got conservative whites here, and I think that there are some whites
who are probably not ready to voter for a ….
you get the idea next will be emphasis on black voter margins for Obama
Blacks for Blacks White for Whites Politics Clinton style and unlike Obama who voted against immunity for the peeping toms who read our e-mails Hillary could not bother to vote– she had to rush off to Texas in search of some good old boys
Nope. Can’t be Lincoln. He usually wore his hat outdoors.
