Update II: Chris Van Hollen is on MSNBC announcing that they're extending the voting until 9:30 in Maryland.
Update: MSNBC calls Virgina for Obama.
Markos
analyzes the three things he feels are necessary for a successful primary challenge and concludes:
1. We're the main attraction on the ballot,
2. We have the money to get out our message (duh), and
3. Turnout remains low.
Weather here in the DC area is horrible, it's 26 degrees out, the roads are icy and there are accidents everywhere. If low turnout favors Donna Edwards today, the weather will work to her advantage.
Matt Stoller continues to man his polling place in MD-04. He says there's no Al Wynn person there. I guess money can't buy you love after all.

Go Donna!
Come on Donna!
As icy as Al Wynn’s heart eh?
I sent Donna some dough- really hope she takes it.
Enough hooky- back to work now.
Donna!
13 mins til the VA polls close…
i hope donna kicks al’s ass from here until tomorrow… but i can’t hope for low turn out.
If low-information voters keep returning bad Democrats to office, how do we reach them?
I voted in VA today, I wish I coulda’ voted in MD today.
I NEED to see her win after Pelosi’s poor behavior regarding the netroots support of her. I can’t remember who she turned her back on, a kos guy?, and walked off when he told her we were wanting to see Wynn GONE. It was Matt Stoller, i think? after that, Donna had ME!
Since I can’t be there to help, I just sent a little contribution to Donna … GO DONNA!
and bravo Matt!
By definition, the only real way to reach them is very expensive media ads.
Donna, Darcy and Dr. Wulsin one of my Four D’s for the US House - along with Diane Benson! I’ve sent Donna more money than ANY candidate outside my home state ever. Got my fingers crossed.
My heart is your’s, Lahoma. ;0)

When Donna wins, I’ll smile today.
That’s a solution for today. How about tomorrow? I’d like to break up the media conglomerates and allow free air time for political ads. I’d like blog video content to be easily available on TV, so users can tune into it (that only peels off people interested enough to watch, though). I’d like to bring back something like the Fairness Doctrine to get real liberal talk generally available on radio.
I’m in the MD 4th district, in the Northern Montgomery County section. There were no Edwards or Wynn poll workers at my polling place this morning. But I got there at 7 a.m. and voted by 7:20.
Go Donna!
Barak in Va
MSNBC calls Virginia for Obama, based on exit polls.
Yay Virginia!
I wish Donna well, but how can it be good for democracy if there is a low turnout?
Based on MSNBC exit polling, Clinton did not achieve her goal of keeping it “close” in Virginia.
These expectations games are amazing.
Maybe Tomorrow
Keith Olbermann on early today and Obama wins Virginia. Moron reporting Obama set a record turnout in VA.
EG what up?
ABC called it for Obama…
THANK YOU, VIRGINIA! Virginia is for Lovers. I’m lovin’ there myself right about now!
Well, if were dreaming, I’d like to see public financing of elections and/or a constitutional amendment (with the Supremes ruling that $=free speech, that’s what it would take) to force the media to provide free access to candidates in return for the piece of the airwaves they receive.
thanks! you saved me from Wolf! i owe ya.
Hey Raven, mighty strange to watch the Virginia race from the other coast. Voted with a provisional ballot here. They give you a phone number, you can call after 30 days to see if your vote was counted or not. Never heard of that before.
It’d be the only thing worth smiling about today!
Steny Hoyer just gave Al Wynn $150,000. They only possible use for the money was to buy votes.
Hmm, I wonder if it is automated?
MSNBC calls for Obama as well.
If anyone is going to be in Milwaukee for the Founders Day dinner, please let me know, my wife and I will be working the registration table and would love to catch up with some of you!
Hillary and Obama will both be there.
Michelle was speaking outside of Green Bay today, I’m waiting for reports from former students about her and the crowds.
Matt, “you da man,” leading by example.
All about the delegate shakedown. Obama’s got to win big, I mean BIG today. TX and OH are gonna be tough, so it’d be nice to have a big lead going into March 4th.
Go Donna! (I did get a fundraising letter from her today…a little late)
I think it possible to call it for Obama. I will have to check that assumption with the VIP. Naturally.
Well, Jane did say it was good for grassroots primary challengers, not that it was good for democracy. However, there is an argument to be made that difficult conditions select for more motivated supporters, which counterbalances the advantage of incumbency among less motivated and “low information” voters, and therefore better for democracy.
We can track the Edwards / Wynn race here:
http://projects.washingtonpost.....istrict-4/
Karl Rove. You nasty little piece of work. You’re almost toast.
Redshift, what was your polling place like today?
Was shocked to learn absentee ballots are not counted unless the precinct votes are “unusually low” here in Monterey County. Kind of gives new urgency to the ole bumpersticker “question authority”. :~(
Good thing that Obama is a constitutional lawyer…
Go Donna!!!!
I think we may be surprised in Ohio and Texas. Somehow I cant see things turning on a dime for Hill
I can’t wait to hear the turnout numbers in Virginia. At my precinct about thirty minutes before the close, there had been 670 votes in the Democratic primary, 152 votes in the Republican primary.
In political terms, those races are an eternity from now.
FYI, Rachel Maddow up on MSNBC!
Maryland & DC polls close 45 minutes from now.
I am so encouraged by the massive Dem turnout all over the country. We are engaging people once again.
ah - Mrs. Greenspan makes her first appearance tonight. Since things are looking less-than-peachy for Hillary, she appears to be happy and serene.
Hey - Mr. Greenspan - this could be the night…
I cannot say I ever hope for a low turnout. I am of a mind that I like high turnouts, and let the chips fall where they may. Traditionally low turnouts have favored Republicans. Am I wrong on this? And I think I understand the dynamics of the Donna Edwards election. Wishing for a low turnout almost smacks of cheating in my brain.
I sent her $$$ three times - I think tonight will be our night!
LOL !
I agree with kiddo.
L.
Pat Buchanan just called Arlington & Alexandria Counties “marxist country”
I don’t know about Ohio, but I believe Texas will break for Obama. He has huge support here…at least in the cities and with the youth.
That is so uncalled for.
We are pulling for Senator Obama. ;0)
Obviously he’s gaining fast, but a SurveyUSA poll today (the most accurate so far) has Hillary up 18%. We cannot underestimate the political machine machine Terry McAuliffe built up in the big states. That was his very vocal strategy when he was DNC chair, and now that he’s with Hillary he’ll be able to pull a lot of strings in those places. Of course, where Terry closed or starved Dem offices like MS, ID, and so on, Obama’s totally cleaning up.
Hillary won pretty big in the big states on Super Tues, and I attribute much of that to this. Obama still has a lot of catch up to play in the big states beacause of this. I think he’ll get it much closer, but not sure he win in those states. Anyway, he’s doing so well in smaller ones, he might not need those big three…just keep it as close or closer than California.
It was great, probably record turnout. From the opening at 6am to just before noon, there were never less than a dozen people in line, and for most of the morning, it was a thirty to forty minute wait to vote. The freezing rain started in the middle of the afternoon, and 395 South was basically shut down during rush hour because of ice on the ramps and a bunch of accidents, so the evening rush was not as big as it might have been, but there was still a steady stream of people.
oh my - Pat Buchanan is in full-goose, balls-to-the-wall, I’ll-say-anything-if-it’s-stupid-enough mode tonight.
Ahem - Mr. Buchanan - that’s Rachel Maddow sitting next to you… (just tryin’ to help)
Mark Penn is still in charge.
Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell says Barack Obama is going to lose votes because some white voters are not ready for a black president:
“I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate.”
Rendell also said he thought race cost his Republican opponent, former NFL star Lynn Swann, around five points in the 2006 election for governor.
Quite a bit of shennanigans are possible given the state of the selection process for either of the two parties. Delegate count, super delegates, not counting absentee ballots under certain (most?) circumstances, caucus states, primary vote states, open or closed primaries, and god knows what all. It sure as hell is not a true democracy. The system insures that we the people are not the dominant force in the election process. It is fundamentally flawed.
Woo-hoo! I’m so honored. That’s almost as good as a few weeks ago on Stephanopolous, I think, where he called John Edwards “Trotsky.”
Guess Pat finally saw the light on corporate socialism via Defense appropriations.
That’s my Governor. :( He’s a long time full-on machine Democrat who gave us a conservative Senator to replace man-on-dog Santorum. He’s also an ass.
We had to go pick Marcy up at the metro. There were accidents everywhere, freezing rain, icy roads, a real mess.
We’re back now, lying on the bed with the dogs watching the returns. Kobe has declared for Obama, Katie confided to Marcy that she supports Clinton and Lucy wants to be the new Obama Girl.
Katie is moping and saying “it’s all about Ohio.” Everyone is waiting for the pygmie returns.
Obama projected to beat Clinton in Virginia
Race between McCain, Huckabee is too close to call, NBC News says
Got 2 tv’s? Westminster is on at 8.
Hi Marcy! Hi Jane! Hi original FirePups!
I have been accused of being a socialist.
NEW YORK - The owner had just the right touch, trying to soothe her French bulldog’s trembling paws.
“There, there,” Patty Hearst said. Far removed from the days when her image as a machinegun-toting revolutionary captivated the world, Patricia Shaw Hearst was in more genteel surroundings Monday. She was tending to Diva at Madison Square Garden, petting her soft head on dogdom’s biggest day.
62% of Virginia GOP voters listen to conservative talk radio. 68% of Virginia GOP voters call themselves conservative. Per MSNBC.
(McCain’s gonna get smoked.)
It’s an open primary, right? Looks like all the independents have abandoned the Rethuglican party.
I have been accused of being a socialist.
Boy, I wish that was the worst thing I’ve been accused of.
Hi kiddo - how’s tricks?
And a standard poodle won the non-sporting group…
Open Left with 1% of the VA vote has Huck at 64% …
I so want him to win … ;->
Nope. The system is fully adherent to the designers’ core objective:
Preserve corporatist rule.
OT arghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://online.wsj.com/article/….._story_lsc
and 3rd day with viral fluuuuu
I’m glad you made it home safely. I’d like to go to the Obama party, but no way am I going back out in that stuff.
Here’s a question for the gang: Should we Democrats switch to winner take all primaries?
The only thing worse than what they do to cockers is what they do to standards!
You gotta love what the wingnuts are doing to Saint John.
“(McCain’s gonna get smoked.)”
Thanks Teddy - you never fail to cheer me up! Always thought McCain was over the top and oh so embarrassing.
This has been a great day for us. Sunny and warm. Hope the same for you.
teh kewl, thanx
Timmeh - Obama wins Independents in VA 66 to 33…
I agree 100%. My mom used to raise cockers in the 40s and she was starting to get horrified then. She probably wouldn’t recognize the breed today.
You have the flu too? It’s just all over the place! I wish you well…
i cant rest with this hacking cough!!!!!
hiya, egregious!
Go, DONNA!
I love watching people whine about weather that would make an Alaskan pull out the dog team for a 100-mile romp…
Thanks for the updates … I can’t bear to watch Timmeh’s smirk or AC’s squint …
McCandyCain is getting licked!
I just got back from working the polls in northern Montgomery County MD. My legislative district contains part of the 4th CD (Wynn) and part of the 8th (Van Hollen). For those precincts in the 4th, I didn’t see any Wynn workers, only Edwards. Turnout was a little lighter than expected, although it was steady throughout the afternoon. I think the rain and ice may have put the kabosh on the evening voters, though.
Obama is skewering Hillary in Va. almost 2:1. Dayam. The 30 percenters will be shitting nickels in November.
Hey ET!
Fingers crossed for Donna…
I think people been catching it on the net, the ultimate biological-tech warfare agent. ;)
I came down with the flu the day after we got back from the Delbert Cruise. Still have a cough but I’m better. Kicked my ass, though.
honey and lemon
If we get any more snow in Toronto (already as much as the last 2 years combined) I’ll be calling you about those Dogs … *g*
thank yee… i went to the doctors office with a uti,and left with the flu virus……………why do they put EVERYBODY togeyther, smashes head on wall
Before that, gargle with warm/hot salt water.
Being in a predominantly female family, I can vouch for the effectiveness of Pure Cranberry Juice for UTI …
Put some sugar in a little bourbon and drink it. Cough will stop and you’ll sleep like a baby.
ive grown bumblebee wings……… headache is amazing
According to an OpenLeft commenter: CNN says Obama won Latinos in Virginia 55-45
MSNBC: Voting extended in Maryland until 9:30 PM
i cant rest with this hacking cough!!!!!
honey and lemon
maybe with a shot of rum and melted butter… smooth + after a few … what cough…who cares about no dam cough
MD polls now will stay open until 9:30pm due to the weather
i have no bourbon, will scotch work?
KO reporting Maryland polls will remain open late due to the bad weather hintering voter turnout.
Yes, it will. This remedy has been around for 100 years or more.
I hear you…I lived in terror two weeks ago 24/7 with Mr. LS very sick — everyone at his job(s) have/had it…it took about 3 days and then the fever broke and he got better quickly…still coughing and his ear is plugged up. I made the most potent potion of Chicken soup I could conjure up…I swear that is what turned the corner for him..everything except the kitchen sink…
I ate it too, and I didn’t get it….
Jack Daniels is the prescription
gargle well with it before you swallow!
Experiment and see :)
Sadlyyes, I owe you an apology for yesterday. Forgive me for being so judgmental?
okey,my head, jaw, and eye socket are about to explode
Sure. Just don’t put too much water in it.
I wonder where that judge is and if he’s in Wynn’s pocket too.
Yes! Honey/Lemon/Scotch…whiskey…whatever you have…remember cough syrup is made up of alcohol. Licorice is good also.
I like your remedy better than mine … *g*
alls forgiven
