I was watching Fox news last night and heard Hannity talking about the Guantanamo six that they’re going to seek the death penalty for. My jaw just about hit the floor when he said that with all of the people who have been proven innocent after having been found guilty of capital crimes, he was starting to rethink his position on it.
Now I wasn’t shocked because Hannity was starting to think that the death penalty was wrong, because I don’t believe in the Easter bunny either and I don’t actually think Hannity gives a toss. Rather it’s a significant shift in Fox culture when one of its marquee assholes starts talking like that, and it likely means that they’re starting to worry about losing market share.
So it’s doubly stupid to start thinking about legitimizing them by letting them be the arbiter of a Democratic debate and give them access to a new audience. Fortunately, the next debate is going to be in Austin on CNN on February 21.

Jane!
“JANE SAYS!…”
I’m aghast, Sean is seeing the light?
Hi Jane:
Got your message. Check your inbox…
I don’t like Sean very much because I think he’s evil.
WFT?
Not to worry. He’ll do a correction for our benefit.
Rather it’s a significant shift in Fox culture when one of its marquee assholes starts talking like that, and it likely means that they’re starting to worry about losing market share.
Remember that line from Outfoxed that the Fox folks learned they could “make money from wrapping themselves in the American flag.”
I think the dollar drives more of what we see from the talking heads on all networks than ideology. MSNBC is shooting for the younger, male market …which is why we see a certain POV in their election coverage.
Jane,
I seem to recall that a long and wierdly worded letter was sent out to Fox employees by Repulsive Roger Ailes.
I imagine that things must be getting a little shaky over there.
They are seen as little better than Pravda.
-G
See how quickly they’ll be concerned about the death penalty when Dick & George come up for sentancing…in the hague…
I thought I was the only one who watched the enemy to study their inane tactics…But I can only take a dose of 15-maybe-20 minutes at a time…
This evening and tomorrow evening we shall be watching the dogs debate at Westminster. No Foxes.
It’s okay to torture and/or kill adult embryos…if you are a Republican that is….
I used to watch TV preachers for the very same reason. Antics!
Hannity’s an illiterate goober, but if he can bring his illiterate goober audience along on the death penalty, I say — well, I say, “Let him try.” It’s more likely he’ll get canned due to the sudden audience reaction to his softening on this iconic stance of the right.
If FOX is fine-tuning its message, it’ll be fun to watch. Their marquee playahs will be denying everything they ever said, or be replaced by other illiterate goobers. They are interchangable to Roger Ailes I suspect.
Keith O is on now
To be or not to be…an embryo…that is the question…
Someone needs to tell the folks voting in CNN’s Quick Vote about this. The question under vote today has been approval for the Death Penalty of these 6 individuals. Last time I checked this afternoon, it was running 75% – 25% in favor of the Death Penalty.
Unfortunately, the Hague no longer has the death penalty…
He didn’t go or finish college. He’s a loud mouth bully coward. I can’t stand to look at his smirk. He has the Bush smirk.
And you are saying? ;-)
I don’t care for dreadful people.
Apologies if this has already been posted:
http://politicalticker.blogs.c…..on-debate/
Jane, please excuse the OT
Kiddo and Lahoma, if you are still here, i’m happy that your students are doing so well. Here is something i just read which you might find interesting.
Next thing you know he’ll call torture WRONG and UNAMERICAN!
There’s no Easter Bunny?
The Easter Bunny was a terrorist who received no trial.
I do not and will not watch Pox Noise.
Are you sure he wasn’t just a tourist?
Damn! Next thing, somebody’s gonna try to tell me there’s no Tooth Fairy either…
Sorry to go OT, but I have been watching Dodd on CSPAN2 (internet). He is absolutely brilliant. Cited the details of cases where individuals have been mistakenly taken-was chilling and heartbreaking. I have listened to Dodd via CSPAN a lot, but this is amazing. I hope it is recorded for listening again, bec. if you’re just getting there, you’ve missed A LOT!!! Brilliant.
Keith suggests that according to the superdelegates, Clinton MUST win both Texas and Ohio to remain viable.
For that to be true, he would have had to have thought about it in the first place. Two thoughts in one lifetime would be dangerous.
Missing Dodd right now.. would be a tragedy.
Heh, I won’t go there… 8-P
Old story about a colleague, a single mom with a six year old. She’s speaking at a conference, and someone challenges her statement, saying “if you believe that, you probably believe in the tooth fairy.” She turns, looks at this jerk and says, “I have a six year old and I can tell you with certainty that not only is there a tooth fairy, I AM the tooth fairy.”
I am watching Dodd and my heart is breaking.
I would rather know they are rotting in prison.. preferably in solitary confinement
LOL
So prez Bush recently said at the end of an interview: “hey, what can I say, I’m just a simple president”. From Olbermann a few minutes ago.
Did you see Feingold’s speech? If not EW posted it w/video and a synopsis of it…
Jane and all you so called progressives out there…Fox News is no worse than MSNBC, the New York Times. At MSNBC (1) Imus referred to members of an elite women’s basketball team as “nappy headed hoes” (2)Chris Matthews called Hilllary Clinton a bitch and (3)David Shuster used a term that likened Chelsea Clinton to a prostitute. Columnists at the New York Times and the Washington Post have referred to Hillary Clinton (and her husband)as racists desoite years of fighting for African Americans and that’s just the beginning. Only a self satisfied hypocrite would argue that Fox News is worse than the rest of the mainstream press. Of course the biggest hypocrites out there are Obama supporters who remain silent in the face of all this sexism. They remain silent because the so called liberal media’s sexist rants offer a temporary tactical advantage for their preferred candidate. But by remaining silent, you are as bad or worse that the Fox News personalities you love to hate. After all, Fox News is just playing to their audience to make a buck. Progressives who remain silent know better, they just don’t care. I say, debate on Fox News. Eschew MSNBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post. Is Maureen Dowd or Chris Matthews really any better that Sean or Bill?
ES- you watching Dodd? He is going way beyond all I have seen before during the FISA debates. Heart-breaking and brilliant.
I spend a lot of time pretending I don’t know what I know.
Dodd would be very valuable in a new Democratic Administration. Edwards for AG? Dodd at Homeland Security?
With total sensory deprivation as they’d accorded Padilla…!
We feel Dodd would be a good chioce for SCOTUS also.
Standing up and holding hand over heart.. as Dodd sets the record straight!
Hannity? Who’s he?
Since a replacement for Dodd would be appointed by an R govenor named Jodi Rell, he needs to stay right where he is in the Senate and hold the Dem President to the same constitutional standard he is trying to hold the current administration.
Sean does not mind control his people they listen to him because he tells them what they want to hear. Sean can sweet talk them into buying a Ford rather than a Chevy, but he can’t get them to buy an electric car.
If Fox wants the youth vote they, well have no chance they are branded with Bush. Fox News Talking Heads would all have to replaced because none of them have any Lefty Cred. In fact they just make Lefties angry I can’t even watch the channel anymore.
If Fox wants the youth vote they need to start a new channel with no known connection to Fox News.
So Obama will have probably won a few more states by that debate and have a commanding lead in actual delegates (supers should not be included at this point in anyone’s math IMO). TX and OH on March 4 will be considered do-or-dies for Clinton. It’ll be interesting if Clinton gets more aggressive at this debate than they both were at the last love-in in LA.
Perhaps Maggie Williams was brought in because she doesn’t mind getting down and dirty?
Fox News is a wholly controlled subsidiary of the Republican Party.
hear hear… Go Dodd we need more patriots like this in our country…. Impeach Bush and Cheney!!
Sorry, WigWag, that dog won’t hunt… I would agree with some of what you say, but, ya went a tad overboard with your denouncements…
hear hear!
He sure deserves our applause and attention … he’s arguing his heart out!
He went back to Harry Truman…. and his abuse of executive privilege and secrecy
I hope someone is recording this. IT needs to be out there for watching and rewatching, and watching again. Simply amazing.
Lahoma is watching Dodd upstairs. I’m going between Dodd and Olbermann downstairs. My lady and I really like Sen. Dodd. We would have been very comfortable with President Dodd.
Many of us would have … sigh
Selise is recording now.
Selise and Marcy are on the job, Ma’am…! *g*
Fox is worse
Your secrets safe with me 707
Kathryn in MA-I have a child in my old age who is difficult but as fine a mind as one could ask for=good on ya.
Disagree. Fox is off the charts and has been for years. Jabba the Ailes, the founder and still boss at Pox Newz used to be Lush Limpballz Exec Producer, most famously producing the “barking dog” animation to associate with Chelsea Clinton.
This is no way a defense of ridiculous things coming out of the other networks, but the simply is no comparison. A few minutes at MediaMatters.org will make that clear.
So Dodd is speaking right now–what is he doing, filibustering?
What are these “conservative principles” that I keep hearing about and why do conservatives want to search for their candidate based on these? Is it a religion?
I would have been quite comfortable with President Dodd and that was the one exception to him staying in the Senate.
Yes. But my understanding is Sen. Dodd will not stand for re-election. Dodd for the Supreme Court eventually?
I don’t know how many previous debates have been televised by Univision, but this will be important the spanish speaking Texans. The date being 2/21 allows time for it to sink in with the populace. UT Austin is my undergrad alma mater so this is exciting. I am already aware of people willing to go to great lengths to have a seat there. The venue has yet to be determined, afaikt
Dodd is quoting Glenn Greenwald right now…
And who do you think controls MSNBC, tinker bell? You know perfectly well that MSNBC is owned by General Electric, one of the five largest defense contractors in the world. NBC news personalities were personally vetted by former GE CEO, Jack Welsh, an arch conservative and a republican who has stated more than once his disdain for democrats. It’s time for progressives to wake up and smell the roses! Rupert Murdoch is, if anything, less conservative than Jack Welsh
Senator Dodd is inspiring.
Really? Which part of my argument is wrong? Or is that the truth hurts?
There’s no Easter Bunny?
Oh, don’t even bring up that rotten SOB around me. Now me and Santa are tight, but the Easter Bunny, grrr…
I’m beginning to think that he doesn’t even exist – or maybe it’s just that his PR and Request Sections just suck.
Either way – no joy from that SOB lately, and I *do* hold grudges…
I’ve almost completely cut out Conglomerate Press from my life. It feels great. Damn Yahoo puts AP headlines in my mail, so get that and the occasional News Hour or Sunday morn show, but it’s funny to watch that stuff now, and feel so much more informed than the people in the box.
Oh, and I’d wish Air America would get rid of the CNN cut-ins. Totally worthless. Between FDL and two or three other sites, I feel more empowered politically than ever before. Knowledge is indeed power!
Dodd is employing a weapon the Republicans fear–logic.
I have been schmoozing with a ten year old and have no clue where you are watching Senator Dodd-Info please or is it too late.
ES CT- that’s good.
despite what C-SPAN messaage says (super Tuesday) Dodd is on C-SPAN-2
http://www.c-span.org/watch/
Why?
Dodd is beyond inspiring… I am so thankful that he is standing up for our rights and the Rule of Law.
What is wrong with our country that his arguments go unheeded?
CSPAN2…
Senator Dodd is terrific. What a mench. He gets it! Boy does he get it.
Does Welsh have the same editorial control as Murdoch or Ailes, not a chance! Although, MSNBC is not perfect by any means, I do accord them a lot more latitude than Faux Spew…
Dodd: “wealth above justice”. Not bad. I like Sen. Dodd. A lot.
I switched from Countdown (which I love)to Dodd on CSPAN2–and am glad I did. He is dynamite.
May I go *way* OfT for a sec?
Got a client with no green money – but *with* the ability to build me a web-site. What does “Google-Bombing” mean?
thanks, and we now return you to you regularly scheduled programming….
Bonkers, I enjoy reading your posts. You are one of the most thougtful commentators on this site. I do read Media Matters. But progressives and these days, Obama supporters like yourself, are willing to ignore the sexism of MSNBC and others because it benefits your candidate. If that’s not worthy of criticism, what is?
Me the same. I used to buy and read the NYtimes and breakfast. Neva again.
I am more informed than most people I met by using FDL, and a few web sites.
Don’t do much Telly either, ocassional Keith and some Moyers and of course LinkTV and Pacifica.
WOW, there are about a thousand quotables in what Dodd has said so far. I just can’t keep up with him. Brilliant.
Nice to hear some one say something true on the Senate floor. It’s been a long time.
Had not heard that about Dodd. I think his seat is up in 2010. No idea how a race to replace him would shake out.
He should never have dropped out of the presidential race… where are the reaming two today when they are needed? They better show up tomorrow for the vote and have strong statements of support for Senator Dodd and stand against the immunity for this Administration and the Telcos.
Exactly Jane! The right wing of this country is nothing but a bunch of blowhards who lick their finger and put in the wind to see which way the money will blow in.
They could care less about the death penalty. Hell, they’ve been celebrating for years now the Iraqis receiving the American death penalty!
By the way, I heard Ass Limbo (Rush Limbaugh for those that don’t know my pet name for him LOL) say today that it’s the MEDIA’S fault for SMEARING the good messages and stances of conservatives in this country. Uh huh. Yep! It’s not Ass Limbo’s fault that he’s had the ROM (republican owned media) spreading his every thought and want over the past seven years to turn conservatism into the newest political dirty word. Nope! Ass tells us the media was spreading something else.
Unfreakingbelievable.
His quoting McConnell was a hoot.
They are worried about corporations paying out on a lawsuit? So they should get immunity? buwhah
Does Dodd still need help retiring his campaign debt? Think his speech is worth a few bucks.
Lahoma has just sent me an email from upstairs indicating she thinks that Sen. Dodd should be appointed to the SCOTUS. Lord, I love her.
eCahn- Dodd has been doing this on a regular basis during the FISA debates, but this is remarkable.
I cannot overstate how brilliant Dodd is right now.
Welsh appears on MSNBC and CNBC all the time. He appears on Scarborough, Matthews, Olberman and several CNBC shows were politics are discussed, e.g. their morning show. He hired most of them, don’t you think that means something?
Perhaps I am not correct on this. ;0)
Apparently Dodd is stil retiring campaign debt. Here’s the link
https://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/1318/t/59/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=1925
I love Dodd’s voice and it’s one I could listen to from the White House for many, many years.
Dodd is sizzling tonight.
How can you stand to listen to these creeps?
In NYC the late nite radio has Laura Ingraham on. She is so vile I won’t listen. I tried but she is such a bile person. Hannity, Limbo.. repulsive. Vulgar.
wiki on Google Bombing
WigWag – your arguments ring hollow at a time when Senator Dodd is honoring the truths you seem to hold so dear on CPAN TV and online right now.
jmho
(Just considering the Constitution is nice, Dodd, and so glad you are! It’s been so long since someone has there on that Senate floor.)
Dodd for VP? Or do we need as a senator?
How about AG?
Co-equal branches! What a concept!
Let’s just skip that part and decide the President is right about everything. Deprive the courts of the opportunity to decide… because the President says so. Not challenge a “massive” invasion of privacy…
Go, go, go, Dodd!
Dodd is giving a speech of a lifetime.
Well, first off AAR is off the air up here, so there’s only right wing radio to listen to. Second of all, I own a housecleaning business, so luckily, I don’t get to listen much!
I agree with you. They make veins pop out on my forehead! I really HATE them and that is an understatement of how I feel about them. Trust me on this. ;-)
There is no equivalent of Keith Olbermann or David Schuster at FOX.
sorry-ot-valley girl, i left a post for you in the last thread
here’s the link-
ttp://www.chrisdodd.com/doddpod
They created Hilary bashing, they rode bashing the Liberal Media to TV rating highs, they led and the rest of the media sheep followed. If we knock down the leader we scatter the flock.
Dodd for AG? That would work. I like Edwards too. Supreme Court Justice Dodd sounds very good too.
You can always find counter-examples by cherry-picking. With FOX it’s an entire underlying philosophy that has manifested itself in massively numerous and varied ways across many years, not only by what they report but by what they don’t.
Makes it hard to vote for BO or HRC when you get to see how serious Chris Dodd takes his oath. It makes me sick I never got to vote for him.
Dodd is doing the lifting.
You can stream from a laptop. Reception of AAR sucks and stream Thom Hartman on the laptop.
The web can get you to any decent radio program.
Senator Dodd is riviting tonight.
Enough already, believe what you will, but, your basic premises are rather shallow and unfounded! I have my views, and, evidently you have yours… Peace!
All of our lifting he deserves our love and respect for his railing against this FISA immunity shit…What a patriot
i have been in love with dodd since cspan first started, i got chills listening to his speeches……no kidding.
back when noone watched cspan, early 80’s., i did, and dodd moved me, and got me into politics. i love him.
and valley girl, i responded in the last thread by saying, dodd was my ONLY choice, too.
he is an incredible human being.
Kiddo,
I like Dodd as AG. He seems to be very fair and really loves the constitution.
Edwards really wants to fight poverty. AG is not the place to do that. HHS might be better.
Both would be good at the court I think.
Having people click on the article on google so much that it goes to the top. So if one googles-say-Joe Lieberman, they would likely click on the first article google lists.
thank you – don’t know how that might help *me* in any way, but thank you for the info and going to the trouble – I do appreciate it ….
Obviously that should be “riveting”. Mr. Dodd has me excited.
I agree that Keith Olberman is okay, probably the most reasonable pundit on any cable station. David Shuster, well he implied that Chelsea Clinton is a prostitute. Sounds alot to me like when Fox pundits implied that Hillary Clinton killed Vice Foster.
People at MSNBC know the drill. If you want to appear on their station and maybe even get your own show there is one way to succeed, engage in a sexist rant. And you won’t need to worry, the people who should call you out for it, the progressives, won’t care.
keep dreaming!
So any Dodd supporters with a little spare cash, help him retire his campaign debt here
https://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/1318/t/59/shop/custom.jsp?donate_page_KEY=1925
kiddo- ain’t that the truth!
It can help you if say someone is looking for a lawyer in Indy through a google search and your web site is right up top.
kiddo, see my #23
Sounds like “the progressives” ran over your dog or something.
Network news is entertainment.
You want something serious.. watch Moyers.
Kieth can be good, but he puts on a show, don’t he?
KO is unique in 24/7 media. For that MSNBC gets a pass from me. I don’t watch anything else there anyway.
why didn’t any of you shits pay attention to dodd when you had the chance, huh????????????????????????
man………..
We will vote for Obama or Hillary for our new president.
Dodd was my first choice. I still have a hard time trying to figure out why no one paid attention to him. He’s a great man.
thanks ecahn about the dodd debt link, i didn’t know.
i left you a comment in the last thread, about webb, but wasn’t that important.
Cherry picking? Since the presidential campaign began several months ago various MSNBC commentators have (1) called Hillary Clinton a bitch; (2) claimed that she’s shrill (because women’s voices are higher pitched then men’s), (3)called her a racist, (4)claimed errouneously that she cried for politicl advantage, and (5) implied that she is pimping out her own daughter (which would make Chelsea, what, that’s right a prostitute). Other women subjected too MSNBC’s sexism include Speaker Pelosi and Senator Mikulski.
You know what, Dov12348, I don’t call that cherry picking
He was mine also then Edwards. Now I have to make a choice from my third stringers Daym….
Seems to me that FDL supporters were for Dodd and Edwards and Dennis in the beginning.
Thank you. ;0)
dmac– now now! better clarify “you shits” asap. Bec. I donated to Dodd, and he was my #1 choice for Pres. And, same for others here. I trust you are talking about uhm…. not anyone here ;)
No justice, no peace!
Kieth can be good, but he puts on a show, don’t he?
A very necessary show, imo. Whispering doesn’t gain much attention, now does it? To have such a podium and not use it would probably, even from you, draw more ire, than what it is that he is now doing?
Somebody needs to scream – and I’ll support each and every one of them.
Saw your comment. We’ll wait & see.
tbsa, yes, i left you a post in the last thread that dodd was my first choice, too……hands down…….
At what juncture did I not pay attention to Dodd, I’ve still haven’t been accorded a vote… Even for Edwards… 8-(
BTW ditto Obama.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — The U.S. military is seriously deficient in meeting “the threat of Islamist insurgencies,” says a Pentagon-commissioned study released Monday.
The Rand Corp. report characterizes “U.S. military intervention and occupation in the Muslim world” as “at best inadequate, at worst counter-productive, and, on the whole, infeasible.” The Pentagon asked the nonprofit research organization to review strategies to thwart insurgents
SanderO, if we remain silent in the face of sexism by calling it entertainment, women everywhere suffer.
It sucks to continually have to vote for someone you are much less than thrilled with. I know HRC, or BO will be lightyears better than what we have now but when I see the likes of Dodd on the Senate floor like he is now it makes me sad.
Is that ATT NAS room still sucking our internet traffic?
I beg your pardon?
Just who the fuck are you talkin’ to?
Seemed to me we were discussing those who did not pay attention..
PAY ATTENTION
KO is fine (not great). It’s great that you don’t watch anything else there, but hundreds of thousands do. If they think the sexism at MSNBC is unchallenged, what does it say about so called progressives?
Uhm, yes!
I despise sexism anywhere MSNBC is no exception.
man, I wish I could coach the democrats that are going to appear on hannity
he always pulls the same trick he always hit’s them with something bizarre from a democrat, usually out of context but so obscure the person he’s asking doesn’t have enough information to comment
all democrats need to have an arsenol of republican craziness and answer a hannity clip with a clip of their own
and when he says anything close to “the surge is working, the reagan tax cust, concervatives want small government” all democrats need to just laugh at him like he is jay leno telling a joke that nobody could possibly believe
ecahn, yes, we will, won’t we………..
Are you serious? They are still do this level of spying on the internet TODAY? NOW? This chat room?
I can still remember reading this and being absolutely appalled:
Whistle-Blower Outs NSA Spy Room
By Ryan Singel
Apr, 07, 2006
AT&T provided National Security Agency eavesdroppers with full access to its customers’ phone calls, and shunted its customers’ internet traffic to data-mining equipment installed in a secret room in its San Francisco switching center, according to a former AT&T worker cooperating in the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s lawsuit against the company. […]
Man, I’m going back to the non-controversial thread about the Nam!
I am sure you are a great person. It’s great that you despise sexism. But with all due respect, despising it isn’t enough. You have to loudly decry it or you abet it.
Don’t you think you have made your point?
You are right and I do send email an complain and don’t watch and never support their sponsors.
I am not a great person. I am simply a person.
Well, PW has an excellent post on Barbara Jordan…
I’ll bet that the NSA has other “rooms” in other cities doing the same syping.
Hey, WigWag: How about you give the sanctimony a little rest? Where do you get off acting like only you have the progressive bona fides, and everyone else here is some kind of anti-progressive collaborator? Enough with the fucking lectures.
I don’t have a dog. But I don’t like sexism that comes from the left or right. Everyone’s criticizing FOX News. Is it really so absurd to ask people to look in the mirror first. You know, “let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.” That doesn’t seem like such an unreasonable thing to live by, does it?
jayt, gimme a break, been gone for a little while, but i’ve been here longer than you, saying it as a friend, not as libertylee………….geeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz forgot me already?
in my world, when you say ’you shit’ it is not derogatory, is that you’ve been had, and you’re laughing, and you say it, and get up from the poker table, and come back with snacks.
lighten up
i’ve started to comment again cuz the water in the lake has somehow become muddy, not the spring-fed waters that i used to swim in.
Do you think, I’ve made my point?
I think you are berating it.
adios
I think that’s great. Just one person’s opinion.
It sounds like your the sanctimonious one on this blog tonight. By the way, your language reveals alot about you.
Yes. Wired has covered this exyensively – IIRC boingboing has also done so.
jayt-and i didn’t appreciate you saying-”who the fuck are you talking to?”
cmon, that shouldn’t even be said to libertylee………..let alone me.
you are one of the commenters i liked to read………i don’t remember you getting so vulgar with anyone.
i’m certainly not the one you should have aimed that at.
How petty to be defending FOX news??? during something as important as this defense that Dodd is mounting so we can have our constitutional government take it else where some one cares abut Faux news..
Sleep well!
It is obvious that WigWag has no purpose here other than to stir the pot.
Let’s all take a deep breath here.
WigWag, I’m just curious if you read all the comments on Jane’s post from Friday.
Dodd is great, Bush is terrible, feel better! If only the progressives on this blog were more like Dodd and less like Bush.
as I understand from an earlier post from Christy, I evidently walked in the door shortly after she did.
otoh, of course I remember you – I think you chose a very inappropriate way of expressing yourself – and I’d be real shitty if I didn’t also put my points forward in a, say, clumsy, manner almost each and every day.
It’s all good – some days we’re in better, or worse, moods, than others, eh?
Wrong pot wrong time there is something else happening that we as a family care more about than Faux news… I won’t go in to why I don’t/want to watch Faux news..
nahant- and I have to thank you for giving me the heads up on a previous thread that Dodd was up on C-SPAN2!
Wow! As someone said earlier, “speech of a lifetime”. Dodd.
You have lost it… you must be some kind of a wingnut who is here just to stir up shit… work for the NSA maybe???
Stir the pot? That’s what progressives are supposed to do, not act like clones too feeble to think for themselves and afraid to fight for justice for women and other maligned groups.
I did, Jane is great! She is smart, fair and insightful. I don’t happen to agree with that post.
My guess is that I was fighting for progressive causes before you were born.
I think you missed my point. You could come up with another hundred “examples” and it wouldn’t make any difference unless you can show it in a deeper sense as an admitted underlying set of principles of a given media source — a philosophy. FOX makes no secret of theirs, which makes it even easier.
You are too funny. First off, I don’t have a laptop (can’t afford one), don’t have a Blackberry (again, can’t afford one), and I do stream AAR sometimes when I’m home.
Okay? LOL
Believe me! If I was high-tech, I would never have to soil my ears to listen to these assholes! On the other hand, listening to them makes for good conversation later.
I am still being put in awe of this patriot, he must be kept in government where he can do the most good for our country… by far the best speech I have ever heard including JFK who is and has been my personal hero…Dodd is very inspiring and all kids taking government classes should be required to watch this speech and do a report on what it all means… great teaching tool… Kiddo hope you guys can teach this someday to your students..
I think, that with every primary Obama wins, we’re gonna start to see a sea change in Fox. They’re right-wing assholes, but they know a flying-Godzilla ass-kicking when they see one coming, and that’s what the right in this country is going to get, if we nominate Obama.
They won’t handle him with kid gloves, but they can rant and foam all they want, and it won’t energize enough asshats to save them, if we put up Barack.
If he wins Maryland and Virginia and D.C. tomorrow night, and can tack on a few more, no amount of convention machinations nor floor-fight-fuckery can stop him. He, and we, will make political history. And we will put the conservatives and their entire worldview so far back in the woods that they may never come out.
And, Obama’s not the saviour; we are. :o)
(Oh. George Bush helped, by being such a stupid, arrogant, greedy, little fratrat of a president, and by assembling the ship of bloody-handed fools that now controls our government.)
I doubt that, did you ever do any service for our country?? I did.
Ignore it, and it’ll move on to more fertile environs.
Thank you for your reply. Your are right, Fox makes no secret of their underlying philosophy. That makes it easier to criticize them (criticism they richly deserve). MSNBC pretends to be something that they are not. This makes MSNBC’s behavior equally reprehensible but more insidious.
You are right, I didn’t serve our country. In fact I was a draft dodger. I guess that makes me a wingnut, right?
By the way, I think its great that you served.
ok, i said it the way i said it, meaning ’shits’ as i would say it to my best friends in the world, maybe in your worlds that is vindictive, in my world, is amused and cornered, and still amused, maybe it’s different in other parts of the country, but that’s how i say it in my world…..noone here has ever said ’you shit’ cracking up?????????????????????????? well, we have, many times.
…but still, if people had paid attention to dodd, he would still be in it………
i’m not tryin’ to go back to the ’way back’ machine, but you all brought it up with your ’oh he’s so grand’ talk.
i’ve been here, noone gave a shit about dodd……..that’s a fact.
if people here had supported him, he would still be viable, that is a fact.
we have hillary and obama.
that is a fact.
i gave money to dodd, and i will give more thanks to ecahn’s link that said he needs more to pay off his debt.
so hate me for sayin’ it, i don’t care, that is a fact.
No not serving was you choice …but your actions here make me think that maybe just maybe you are some kind of a wingnut, only you can tell us the truth.
If you believe MSNBC is something they don’t openly admit to, you’ll have to do more than come up with a dozen quotes out of multi-millions to even have an argument.
I’m with Glenzilla: can’t wait ’til the nominations are over. Jeebus.
dmac—it’s great to see you back in the comments.
I have to say though that your earlier comment left me scratching my head and I, for one, was not surprised by the reaction to it.
Welcome back.
Look, I am just expressing my opinion. Instead of attacking my motives why not try and rebut what I am saying. Which is that MSNBC, NY Times, Washington Post, etc. are wolves in sheep clothing. Their sexist attacks agaisnt Hillary Clinton and other women candidates makes them as bad as Fox.
Plus you’ll have to show by way of an enormous sample, all the stories they could have and should have run but ignored…and draw a conclusion from it.
By the way, my last post was directed at yout comment 198 as well, not 199.
nahant!!! yes, and thank you again for turning me on to this Dodd speech.
Totally rich in details, nailing every one of them, details then and now. And, brilliant turns of phrase. Total command of the issues.
I am not sure how to comment on your post. How would one make a point about a cable station or a pundit other than by noting what they say. What they say is the whole point of why they broadcast or write in the first place.
Do you agree that many commentators on MSNBC have made profoundly sexist comments? People who make sexist comments repeatedly are sexist. I just don’t understand why you are willing to tolerate sexism from MSNBC and not Fox.
And why doesn’t the same standard apply to criticism of FOX?
Somehow, I have a hard time seriously considering criticism of progressives from someone who said this:
But then again, perhaps that’s just me.
WW- “Count this 50 year old women as fed-up with the democratic party and the left in general.”
WW- “You are right, I didn’t serve our country. In fact I was a draft dodger. I guess that makes me a wingnut, right?”
Uh, you are a 50 yo woman and you are a draft- dodger?
Somehow this just doesn’t add up.
Ah ha! WigWag must be one of those new fangledy Progressive Republican McCain supporters./s
You are totally welcomed I just wish my notice could have gone out to all of our citizens in this country so they might know the truth about this Bush Administration… Dam impeach the bastards NOW!!
Okay, that’s fair, you have a hard time taking me seriously because you don’t like something I’ve said. But you still haven’t been able to factually rebut my point. Do you think that MSNBC pundits have repeatedly made sexist comments? Do you think that a cable channel that repeatedly allows its airwaves to be used for sexist commentary is okay? Do you think sexism on MSNBC is okay but sexism on Fox is beyond the pale?
I look forward to your answer.
That’s right, Eureka Springs, Clinton supporters who don’t like the fact that Hillary has been skewered by a sexist press and the sexist blogworld are conservative. Obama supporters who remain silent in the face of sexism (and can’t even abide having it mentioned)are brave idealists fighting for truth, justice and the Amereican way. Give me a break!
My simple answer would be that sexism is not acceptable anywhere. After that, I would refer you back to my earlier comment that included the link to Jane’s post.
WigWam- could you please reconcile the 2 comments you have made?
WW- “Count this 50 year old women as fed-up with the democratic party and the left in general.”
WW- “You are right, I didn’t serve our country. In fact I was a draft dodger. I guess that makes me a wingnut, right?”
You are a 50-yo female draft-dodger?
You know, RPG, if you read this whole line of posts, you are only one of 3 or 4 commentators who have bothered to acknowledge that sexism on other cable outlets even exists. You’re right, its not acceptable anywhere. We’ll just have to disagree about whether its acceptable for an outlet that we like to be sexist while its unacceptable for an outlet that we despise.
Thank you.
rpg–’you shits’ is a term used around here amongst friends….closest friends…..as in a poker game when you are caught bluffing, you get nailed, and you say ’you shits’ and go get snacks for the rest cuz you lost……….
or when a friend brings up something you did way back when, that proves what your stand is, is not so valid cuz of what you did back then……….you say ’you shit’
is not meant in the way of you shit like, you drop excrement.
’you shits’ is only used used amongst close friends………only then………
maybe it’s a buckeye thing.
you shits is a direct demand for your friends to pay attention to what the hell you are saying
that is how it is used………..
so, i was saying, pay the hell attention to what i am saying, by using it.
is like saying ’you nerds’ is the same thing………..ohio vernacular.
now i get what you are saying, but is WAY NOT what i was saying.
Enlisted as a WAG, changed my mind, refused to serve, spent several years in Canada.
AND even if i was misunderstood, ’shits’ does not compare with the usage of the word ’fuck’ in my direction.
It does seem a bit confusing that someone purporting to be a Clinton supporter would espouse having a President McCain because of the sexism Senator Clinton has had to deal with. Seems to be just a bit convoluted in the argument there.
Those dang written words can be a tricky thing sometimes. Just wanted to make sure you understood how perhaps some folks misinterpreted your intentions.
There are a million reasons to support Senator Obama over Senator Clinton or Senator Clinton over Senatr Obama. The problem is that Senator Clinton is skewered in the main stream media (including MSNBC) not for policy reasons but for reasons related to her gender. If Senator Clinton loses for those reasons it will set women in politics (at least at the Presidential level) back for a generation.
Maybe that’s okay with you. Maybe it doesn’t give you pause. It’s not okay with me. I also suspect that it will not be okay with millions of working class women who support Senator Clinton. Time will tell.
SO the party of Bush and McCain has proposed dropping the DOJ 2009 budget for violence against womens programs.. but..I guess it’s OK if you are A Bush/McCain supporting Republican.
I can’t stand George Bush. I think John McCain is awful. I think sexism is worse.
The distinction is: A smattering of individual random comments, the content, context and meang of which some are debatable, v. an overall philosophy of a network. With FOX the point has been demonstrated; with MSNBC, maybe you can do it but it would take much more than what you’ve come up with.
I have to hit the sack now; I’ll respond to your other post first.
Ummm… I hold her AUMF vote accountable for my dislike of her… Nothing more, nothing less…
Why am I thinking of Bilbo on a cold night with a “secret” key – that was very big in his hand?
“Dawn take you…and be stone to you.”
It does apply to FOX. A marketplace blows up in Iraq and they air the umpteenth update on a missing blond girl. It’s much more than random instances of that — it’s a pattern.
Gotta go…good night…
Like her, hate her, I don’t doubt that you have good reasons for your decision. By why are you unwilling to acknowledge or criticize the sexist comments directed against Senator Clinton. Who you support isn’t the problem, it’s your silence in response to blatant sexism. You can’t even abide having me raise the point. Why?
g’nite, dov – good dreams to you.
anybody got a good joke?
Good night. Thanks for chatting with me.
CTuttle, I apologize I did not let you know yesterday that I respect your military service and the honor you clearly bring to the uniform.
Thanks.
Jane, saying and believing, are two different things. Hannity is still the kind of guy that would bring his own rope to a hanging and say he wasn’t planning on using it. It’s in his blood.
LS@12:
From the General’s site:
Republican Jesus:
“Fuck those Iraqi kids. Save the blastocysts!”
At what juncture did I fail to acknowledge or criticize sexism? As I recall, I disagreed with your opinions on MSNBC, not that I’m defending Matthews or Shuster, but, I wholly disagreed with your snide remarks about the FDL community not being true progressives. In actuality, we’ve oftentimes have been encouraged to write/e-mail MSNBC for slurs, in particular, Imus’s blatant remarks…
Mahalo, Doc! That means a lot to me…! *g*
You are most welcome, CT. I apologize I did not speak up at the time.
A more articulate rendition of MSNBC’s sexism than I could ever hope to give (from another progressive blog)
“In the past year, MSNBC has begun assembling quite an impressive track record. Three high points stand out:
April 2007: Dim-witted morning man Don Imus is forced to apologize—and is later fired—for saying that an impressive group of young women look like a bunch of “nappy-headed hos.” (In this case, Imus plainly messed with the wrong person—Rutgers coach Vivian Stringer.)
January 2008: Hardball host Chris Matthews is forced to apologize for reams of gender-based insults aimed at Hillary Clinton. (A string of colleagues bellow and wail—about how badly Matthews has been treated.)
February 2008: Matthews apologist David Shuster is forced to apologize—then is suspended—for saying that Chelsea Clinton was “being pimped out in a weird way.” (Honoring his network’s overall credo, Shuster makes several inaccurate statements in his forced mea culpa.)
Gee. Does anyone see any possible patterns emerging from this conduct? Let’s see: The Rutgers women were “hos.” Hillary Clinton is an “uppity” “strip-teaser” who has a “shrill” voice and a laugh that’s a “cackle.” And of course, she’s been “pimping out” her daughter. Can anyone see any possible pattern in the conduct at this broken-souled channel?
Clearly, one of this network’s patterns involves a kooky gender disorder. As has been clear for many years, this dumbest of all the cable networks (oh yes—even dumber than Fox) has been packed with knuckle-dragging, white male throw-backs—the sorts of fellows who are “reminded of strip-teasers” (Matthews) when a woman runs for the White House. Matthews has been a visible gender nut for a long time.”
When oh when will progressives begin to fight back. From the sound of things here at FDL the answer is never.
None of this implies that you or anyone else here supports these kind of comments. I don’t doubt your good motives, I have no basis for doing so. I am merely making the point that we shouldn’t criticize Fox news but then give MSNBC a pass because they say nice things about one of our candidates. Sending e-mails to MSNBC about the Matthew’s comments a few weeks ago (which I am sure some FDL readers did)is a good start, but its a small start.
Time to go. Thank you for chatting with me.
Because you were listening to me read my kid a couple pages of that classic story before bed?
Yes, do please go. Good subject, but too bad you had to hijack the thread from the original subject. Come back sometime when you can discuss the topic at hand.
Forgive me, I wasn’t aware that you were the arbiter of what topic is at hand.
Then you need to go back to the beginning and refresh your memory. I’m through feeding you, obviously you need a lot of attention, having to go on and on like that.
Why does the phrase honey instead of vinegar come to mind right about now?
What lovely serendipity, Peterr.
I still rememember the day my mom brought home a book the librarian thought I would like.
The librarian was wrong: I loved it.
Bless yor, Peterr, for shring that reaure with your son.
(and hope you’ve had a chance to rest up from the snow day!)
From Jane’s original post…”So it’s doubly stupid to start thinking about legitimizing them by letting them (Fox News)be the arbiter of a Democratic debate and give them access to a new audience. Fortunately, the next debate is going to be in Austin on CNN on February.” My comments were all specifically on topic, but don’t worry, next time I’ll check with you before I post anything, you know, to make sure I’m on topic.
my head is tired
Yep. Time for a hot bath.
newton–thanks, yep, with lavendar oil, i have 3 kinds, that’s where i’m headed, thanks to you…….
namaste
Hannity is only play-acting. He doesn’t give a damn about the rights of the accused, especially not the Guantanamo defendants. When the world rightly condemns the United States for using evidence obtained by torture, Hannity can refer back to this pretense of concern for legal correctness. But that’s all it is – a pretense.
No one on Fox News can be trusted at any time. If they predict that the sun will rise in the East tomorrow morning, pull down the shades on the Western side of your bedroom so you can sleep in.
If we do sentence some of them to death, how will this affect the willingness of our allies to turn people over to us? But Bush will have 9/11 back on the front pages for the election season, so he doesn’t give a ****.
Shocked out of lurking. Maybe the Fox sheeple will have second thoughts now that Hannity-icon is having “second-thoughts” on the death penalty. I didn’t know Hannity had thoughts to begin with, that in itself could be a revelation. Torture Joe may take issue with his old friend though. Or maybe it’s all a ruse to add “dimension” to his cardboard cutout character.
Dodd should not leave his seat as senator for any position in the WH, especially not for a position on Heimat security (which is Holy Joe’s Baby and should be thrown out with the rest of the wingnut “improvements” to our federal agencies.) CT has only one sane senator. And being from CT you can imagine my panic, if we are left without representation in the senate, Holy Joe being ready to be carted off to jail (vote-buying) or the rubber ramada, and all. I have a feeling the battle to restore the constitution will be ongoing, no matter who wins the WH. So we need a fighting senator, and CT needs adequate representation.
“t likely means that they’re starting to worry about losing market share.”
I believed this until I read a ratings analysis on HuffPo that indicated that Hannity and even O’Reilly repeats were pulling in far more viewers than KO. This was disheartening. Perhaps the demographic breakdown is better for KO. One thing that this primary opened my eyes to was how entrenched sexism was in news outlets in this country. Political correctness and viewer backlash kept overt racism down in the media, but sexism was fair game. And it was not just Hillary; she only attracts more of it because she is a viable candidate for the Presidency. The recent opinions by Krugman and Fish in the NYT only reinforced this view for me, as did Frank Rich’s nasty hit piece. Brought back unpleasant memories of how Rich attacked Al Gore during his 2000 run.
