What’s on my mind? Huckabee’s lawyers who want to know what the heck’s going on with the GOP here in WA. After all the bitching they did after the 2004 election, this mess is cracking me up.
It was 65 here today — long walk up around the Terraces and down into the Castro. Looked at an apartment renting for twice what we pay that made us very happy with where we live. Much better for the spirit than wandering into million-dollar open houses that make us feel let down when we get home….

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is crying foul after John McCain’s apparent victory in the Washington caucuses on Saturday.
Huckabee’s campaign released a statement Sunday saying it will be exploring all available legal options regarding the “dubious final results.” Arizona Sen. McCain was announced as the victor in the caucuses with 26 percent of the vote to Huckabee’s 24 percent.
But Huckabee’s campaign chairman, Ed Rollins, said Luke Esser, Washington’s Republican Party chairman, chose to call the race too quickly for McCain.
Rollins said Huckabee was losing by 242 votes with 87 percent of the vote counted. He said there were another 1,500 or so votes that were apparently not counted.
“That is an outrage,” Rollins said.
Rollins said the Huckabee campaign’s lawyers will be on the ground in Washington soon to see why the count took so long, and why the vote-counting was stopped prematurely.

I’ve been dissing my Congressman John Dingell by not pointing to the letter he, Bart Stupak (also from Michigan) and Edward Markey sent their colleagues about the FISA bill. But it raises an issue that deserves more attention. After discussing the rationales for telecom immunity, they point out,
For the past five months this Committee has asked, in a bipartisan manner, the phone companies and the Administration to explain whether they acted outside the bounds of the law and what would justify Congress telling a Federal judge to dismiss all lawsuits against the phone companies. The phone companies respond that the Administration has gagged and threatened them with prosecution if they respond to our inquiries. When the Committee requested that the Administration either remove the gag or provide the Committee with the relevant information, the Administration repeatedly refused. Surprisingly, even at this late date, the Administration has not deemed it important enough to respond to our repeated inquiries or even to brief the Committee Members in closed session.
Understand, John Dingell is a long-time friend of the telecoms (and can muster an awesome lecture to constituents on telecom history on demand). And this is the crowd in the House that legislates on telecoms more generally.
Yet the Administration won’t let Ma Bell talk to them–at least not about her overwhelming need for immunity. The Republicans claim that, unless Ma Bell gets immunity, she’ll go out of business. But they won’t let her tell that to the legislators who know the telecom business best.
So it’s not just the Administration’s justifications for their illegal spying program they’ll show to only 20 or so members of Congress in each house. They won’t even let Ma Bell make her case herself.
I’m traveling tomorrow through Wednesday, so I won’t be glued to the teevee to liveblog the FISA votes. But I’ll try to touch base as the Senate vote develops.
Looks like the Congressional critters only want email from people in their district when I clicked on the email link @ DKOS it takes you to a web mail system where you need to enter info about where you live and zip code down to the extra four digit they can use to locate you down to the street and block level… We just may have to resort to snail mail, somehow we have to get this Democratic leadership off the dime and grow some kohonies… they sure act like they lost them somewhere along the way…
It was great, actually. I spent yesterday deep in blogtopia (ystbkctt) and today outside amongst the hills of my fair burg. A well-balanced weekend. How about yours? Find a dress yet?
I think we should, but as I’ve said earlier, Peolsi and Conyers need to know that Bush’s admission of authorizing waterboarding and his intention to do so again should circumstances warrant in his opinion, changes Peolosi’s and Conyers’s legal status. Per the Yamashita Standard, both of them have an afirmative obligation to use their office to prevent war crimes. Yamashita was executed for failing to do so.
The only recourse we have to stop this nonsense is to start the impeachment hearing where the executive loose it’s power of executive privilege and other rights under constitutional law.
Exorcism — the church rite of expelling evil spirits from tortured souls — is making a comeback in Catholic regions of Europe. Last July, more than 300 practitioners gathered in the Polish city of Czestochowa for the fourth International Congress of Exorcists.
About 70 priests serve as trained exorcists in Poland, about double the number of five years ago. An estimated 300 exorcists are active in Italy. Foremost among them: the Rev. Gabriele Amorth, 82, who performs exorcisms daily in Rome and is dean of Europe’s corps of demon-battling priests.
“People don’t pray anymore, they don’t go to church, they don’t go to confession. The devil has an easy time of it,” Amorth said in an interview. “There’s a lot more devil worship, people interested in satanic things and seances, and less in Jesus.”
Amorth and other priests said the resurgence in exorcisms has been encouraged by the Vatican, which in 1999 formally revised and upheld the rite for the first time in almost 400 years.
Although a Vatican official denied reports in December of a campaign to train more exorcists, supporters said informal efforts began under Pope John Paul II — himself an occasional demon chaser — and have accelerated under Pope Benedict XVI. A Catholic university in Rome began offering courses in exorcism in 2005 and has drawn students from around the globe.
Agreed! Then the point to get across to Conyers is that he become liable under International law if he fails to act. And he and Pelosi both need to understand that if she persists in obstruction the impeachment of this war criminal, she is even more culpable than was Yamashita, who merely stepped aside. She is now taking active steps to enable continued war crimes.

Military prosecutors have decided to seek the death penalty for six Guantánamo detainees who are to be charged with central roles in the Sept. 11 terror attacks, government officials who have been briefed on the charges said Sunday.
The officials said the charges would be announced at the Pentagon as soon as Monday and were likely to include numerous war-crimes charges against the six men, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the former Qaeda operations chief who has described himself as the mastermind of the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people.
A Defense Department official said prosecutors were seeking the death penalty because “if any case warrants it, it would be for individuals who were parties to a crime of that scale.” The officials spoke anonymously because no one in the government was authorized to speak about the case.
A decision to seek the death penalty would increase the international focus on the case and present new challenges to the troubled military commission system that has yet to begin a single trial.
“The system hasn’t been able to handle the less-complicated cases it has been presented with to date,” said David Glazier, a former Navy officer who is a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.
Thanks Suz… I have to wait 24 hrs before I can post any thing. I am very willing to wait.. now how did you find that and do you know if they all have similar ways of getting info to them??
IANAL but IMHO, war crimes charges have to go to federal courts, and AFAICT such charges have to be brought by a federal attorney or his/her Grand Jury. I.e., the ball is in Mukasey’s court.
Amy Winehouse won a Grammy. Hurrah! I love her skinny, little legs, her beehive, her tatoos and her affect. Sorry to change the subject but it did say “what’s on your mind?”
Bush Justice Department Goes After Another Democratic Lawyer (And Why This is Bad News for Yoo and Bradbury)
It’s beginning to sound like a stuck record. Another strike by the Bush Justice Department, keeping the country safe. Who’s the target this time? A crack dealer? An al Qaeda terrorist? No. It’s a wing-tip shoed Miami lawyer, who served as president of the bar association, is held in universally high esteem (outside, of course, of the political hacks who run the Bush Justice Department) and who advised Al Gore in the 2000 Florida recount battle. According to the Justice Department, the lawyer’s involvement with Democratic politics has nothing to do with his being charged. Quite a few of his contemporaries are having problems buying that, and still bigger problems understanding his supposed “crime.”
[snip]
What exactly is Kuehne’s [the indicted attorney] involvement in this “conspiracy”? He was asked by another lawyer to give an opinion: did he think the retainer that was offered by a client could be accepted? He looked at the money and its provenance and gave a positive opinion. That’s quite a conspiratorial act.
Some other facts make the Justice Department’s conduct look stranger still. The matter was not determined by local attorneys in the Miami U.S. Attorney’s office, but by political appointees from main Justice in Washington. Law.com collects a number of statements from leaders in the Florida bar, reacting angrily to the charges, including Kuehne’s lawyer…
Are you a Democrat or worse, a Democrat who in any way upset the President of the Far-Right of America? Well then, be afraid, be very afraid.
[snip]
In short my friends, time to start demanding impeachment. In fact, I will support any candidate of any party who will demand impeachment be back on the table. Anyone failing to do so, is not qualified to be the President of the United States. Simply put, I don’t give a rat’s ass about your position on anything, until you make clear your position on the Constitution. So, what is your position on the Constitution candidate x?
I want that question answered now. I don’t care who made someone’s kid cry or who Oprah adores. I don’t care if they think God is their real-life best friend who visits daily and shares recipes. I don’t want to hear anything about anything until I have heard the first and most important thing: rule of law. Because in reality the only time the phrase “you are either with us or against us” should be applied is when discussing the one thing that makes us all Americans. The Constitution. Do you get it yet?

This year 1.7 billion.. proposed 400 million for next year. I don’t think Bushco is planning on leaving anyone around to place charges.

Good evening Eureka.
My ankle is fine, by the way.
Al Qaeda in Iraq must be on the run because they have been writing letters chock full of George Bush’s and General Petraeus’ talking points.
Desperate indeed.

Excuse me, but…
The zed is dead. There is no zed.
WordPress used to label the first comment on a thread as comment “0,” but that would flash only for an instant, and then become comment “1.”
Somebody around here got the idea that “zed” meant “zero,” and started calling the first comment in a thread the zed.
Actually, “zed” means “z.” And the current architecture of FDL no longer produces “zero” comments. So it never made sense to call it the “zed,” and now it makes even less sense.
The zed is dead. There is no zed. There never was.
