UPDATE 7:15 PM PST:
Washington with 87.8% reporting at 7:00 PM PST – Obama 67.35% Clinton 31.4%
Nebraska with 99% reporting at 6:45 PM PST – Obama 68% Clinton 32%
Louisiana with 1578 0f 3,966 parishes or 38% reporting at 6:45 PM PST – Clinton 38% Obama 53% Edwards 4% (CNN calls for Obama)
We’ll have a regular schedule of posts tonight Kirk upstairs, Thers at 8PM PST and of course Late Late Night Listening Pleasure. We’ll keep today’s vote scores updated in separate threads throughout the evening.
We’ve got caucuses in Washington and Nebraska, a primary in Louisianna and a convention in the Virgin Islands today. See top of post for what we know so far.
Big turnout reported in Washington and Nebraska – wow! From Washington, Northwest Progressive reports:
After convening my precinct’s caucus nearly an hour ago, and screaming myself hoarse to the HUGE crowd of people gathered in my precinct, I think the appropriate word to describe turnout today is megagigantic-massive. I was not prepared for this. None of the organizers at our area were.
We ran out of chairs.
We ran out of sign in sheets (had to send someone to the copier for more).
We ran out of pens.
We ran out of tables.
We are out of everything here except for people.
And Goldy at HorsesAss says:
Our caucus location was simply overwhelmed, with every precinct running out of sign-in sheets. 49 people caucused in my precinct, more than twice what I saw in 2004, which had been by far the most crowded caucus I’d ever attended; the chart for calculating delegate apportionment only went up to 25, so we had to do the math to determine the results. It was messy and disorganized — we had to wait for the custodian to open up classrooms because the cafeteria was stuffed to over-flowing — and incorrect instructions were repeatedly delivered… but then democracy is messy, with or without the capital “D”.
And the AP reports from Nebraska:
OMAHA — Thousands of people statewide overflowed school gyms, sat in traffic and stood in groups on Saturday to be counted as part of Nebraska’s first Democratic presidential caucus.
In Douglas County, the state’s most populous county, an average of 1,000 people turned out at each of 15 caucus sites, said Eric Fought, spokesman for the state party.
Sarpy County had one caucus site for 28,000 registered Democrats, triggering traffic backups for miles and complaints from voters while changing the way officials conducted the caucus.
Law enforcement shut down Highway 370 and the intersection leading into the site — a school cafeteria — because the area was packed with cars.
The influx of people was so massive that volunteers began collecting preference cards for people who preferred Obama or Clinton, then allowing them to leave. Traditional caucus procedures allow for more interaction, with supporters standing on either side of a room trying to persuade the undecided and not-so-sure supporters of other candidates to join them.
My favorite tale of the day so far:
Seattle bakery Cupcake Royale is having a "Cupcake Caucus" to raise money for charity. Customers are casting votes by buying treats to support their favorite candidates. While Obama and Hillary cupcakes are flying off the shelves – nobody has requested a McCain cupcake. (my bold)

Woohoo, new thread…
Whoa. Two blowouts by Obama. I think having McCain as the presumptive nominee is making people think about who’s the better candidate in the general.
That’s priceless… ;-)
The Democrats are going to win in November.
“While Obama and Hillary cupcakes are flying off the shelves – nobody has requested a McCain cupcake. (my bold)”
That is good to hear.
Does it matter the candidate or does it have to be Obama? Can it be Clinton?
The RNC must be sh*tting bricks… We the People are speaking loud and clearly…! 8-)
This is such good news for Republicans.
Especially John McCain.
I hope blogs and both candidates realize that they now know the real opponent in November and make that old scanctimonious, sold and pandered-out, exhausted hypocrite and (sadly, due to his recent debate performaces) conscous and bald faced liar, their target.
I would much rather judge Obama and HRC on their ability to critique McCain and the GOP he represents, than to hear them sniping at each other.
I wouldn’t want a McCain cupcake either. Yuck.
I’m LOL trying to imagine what a McCain cupcake looks like.
Let me tell you something Obama. If you become our next president (we voted for you in the recent Oklahoma primary), you’d darn well better behave like a Democrat. Or you can count on being a one-termer.
Hillary is giving a very good speech on MSNBC. She doesn’t have Obama’s flair (who does?) but she’s bashing Bush big time.
no Late Late Nite?
Has anyone seen Virgin Island results – I can’t find them anywhere and they do not have a web site that I can find.
Per MSNBC exit polls, BHO leads HRC by “substantial margin.”
ps – I had my times wrong, updated to PST.
We will support Senator Clinton or Senator Obama for our next president. Whomever wins the nomination. We (my lady and I) think the winning ticket is Obama/Clinton or Clinton/Obama. ;0)
Why do I get the feeling that they work at a leisurely pace in the Virgin Islands? :)
Congrats Dood !
What’s in a McCain Cupcake ?
They also say Louisiana GOP race “too close to call”. McCain is really winning them over, eh? :)
Lord, my lady and I dislike George W. Bush. Good for HRC.
Maybe Hillary will settle for majority leader.
I’d be surprised if both Obama & Clinton are on the Dem ‘08 ticket … then again, I’ve been surprised a lot
this year …
You would think these polling stations would have more supplies available after it has been widely reported that voters are showing up in record numbers this election cycle.
Were there any David Schuster cupcakes or are they still being baked? Ha,ha.
Looks like the Democratic nomination may be leaving the shore with Hillary looking on on the banks.
New York Times shows Virgin Islands results are not available.
I blame Richard Branson.
Do you really want to know…? ;-)
so *here* y’all are – nobody ever tells me anything…
I took the great liberty of channeling you and Lahoma in the previous “Rocking the Vote” thread. People said I did okay… I felt safe doing that because our house agrees with your house…
Aww, Teddy, he resides in the British Virgin Isles…! 8-P
I would imagine that a main ingredient is ‘batsh*t’ … *g*
Jesus Christe! The people are finally pissed!
Hillary has been on MSNBC giving this speech for quite a while. Uninterupted. No commercials. Is that typical for a Saturday night or is this some payment for the schuster comment?
She just finished.
To early to call in LA… But, Hill is up 42% to 37%…
I’m getting this sneaking suspicion that Hillary might take Maine tomorrow. Ugh!!!! So I’m thinking I may have to go to Plan B (Plan A was to vote for Kucinich and then vote ‘uncommitted’ as my 2nd vote): vote for Obama.
I know there are Hillary supporters here on FDL, but I just can’t wrap my brain around her at all. I feel like we’re being duped by she and Bill and it’s not sitting right with me.
Not the Clenis? I thought the Clenis was responsible for everything…
Doc Murphy’s upstairs and he hit another one outta da park !!!
I blame Richard Branson.
I blame Madonna.
CNN is saying Obama is ahead.
Virgin Airways, Virgin Records, Virgin Islands….
… Virgin Mother …
Need FDL delegation to go down there and see what’s up. I volunteer to make the sacrifice.
MSNBC was saying Hill was ahead…
I thought she sounded like she would take a VP spot.
I guess it would be rude to say anything about the Clenis if a Virgin is in the room…. [ducking, running out of the room, covering her head…]
Updated above with first LA results
Well, as they’ve always said, it’s a difference of opinion polls that makes a horse race!
God. Not to be contemplated.
Teddy! I’m roaring here … VI and Branson .. bravo!
MSNBC: 41% Hill, 38% Obama with 0% reporting…
Yes, I can confirm that Marion did a great job channeling, but, we didn’t get our fried fish and cocoa.
CNN website is saying Hillary is ahead 41 – 38 % but their TV chanel is saying that Obama is ahead …
Marion- I left you my report re: GA downstairs on the earlier election thread.
I support Hillary cuz she’s smart and centered. She is far more likely to prosecute war crimes than Obama in my opinion. This is not a time to reach across the aisle.
CNN: BO,40% HC, 39%
I’ll go check…
Cupcakes?!?
That is so sexist! You know…”Hey, cupcake. How you doin?”
Hillary’s gonna demand that bakery get audited.
(Sorry, but demanding Shuster get fired after all they’ve done to make amends already, is so obviously a move to steal the spotlight as much as possible from today’s Obama blowouts. Yes, he deserved punishment, but this is getting ridiculous.)
There are still only 12 of 3,966 parishes in LA reporting – hence the confusion.
Hillary’s calculated Rovian swiftboating of Shuster is backfiring, just as predicted.
TPM Headlines:
-Hillary Clinton To NBC: Shuster Must Be Fired
-Obama Wins Nebraska (pushing 70%)
-Obama Winning Big in Washington State (CNN just called it)
Where was Hillary when Shuster was fighting every day to bring the Plame story to light?
Where was Hillary when Shuster was fighting every day to expose the crimes of Rove & Cheney?
Hillary picked the wrong guy to unload on.
From FleetAdmiralJ’s diary at the Orangerie, here’s how the USVI delegates will be apportioned.
Absolutely. That stupid bakery should have been baking studmuffins….
Politico has 41 (HC) to 38 (BO) in La. 1% reporting.
When/where did she say that Schuster must be fired? I’m turning into Missouri on this. SHOW ME.
And the fact that the exit polls are indicating an Obama win , but, the actual numbers so far aren’t bearing it out…!
Heh, they saw ‘em in half…! ;-)
Here is the Louisiana site for results: http://www400.sos.louisiana.go…..dta=020908
McCain in Norfolk today, on picking a running mate:
Sounds like Jeb! to me.
Just updated – refresh for latest from LA, etc
This is the excerpt from her letter folks are pointing to and saying she wants him fired:
Full letter here
http://tpmelectioncentral.talk…..d_shus.php
OK, she didn’t use the word, but that seems to be a direct implication, doesn’t it?
He can’t do it, can he, but it really sounds like W to me… [shudders with horror]
Hillary relied on Robo calling heavily here in WA.
I hung up on three in one day.
Maria Can’twell, Ex Governor Locke and Hillary herself on the last one.
Everything I have seen so far puts it 3 to 1 Obama, I will have to wait for the final count.
Hey good evening pups -
I’ve been lurking around, watching the Pat Buchannan’s head explode and just soaking in the schadenfreude.
So what do you say, when we have the WH and total and unobstructionable control of Congress, what do you say we impeach a couple of Supreme Court Justices?
Not necessarily – in the context of the next sentence.
Same in Mass.
Yup.
It might have been more appropriate if Chelsea had written a letter to Schuster herself. She’s a woman not a child.
Teddy:
That’s why I’m guessing she’s more into the pattern than the pimp.
I wonder if David Shuster is Hillary’s Sister Souljah. She knows — or her people know — how beloved he is in the blogosphere for being the only competent TradMed journalist on the Plame beat. By coming down so hard on him, is she showing the Democratic party she doesn’t care about what we think?
Anyway, sound off to MSNBC about Shuster here: letters@msnbc.com
Oh, yes, and not just a couple. Four!
HC=37% to OB=49% – 77 precincts reporting. Per Louisiana site
I support Hillary cuz she’s smart and centered. She is far more likely to prosecute war crimes than Obama in my opinion. This is not a time to reach across the aisle.
I respect your opinion, but the Clintons’ DLC record is quite clear. She even co-sponsored a flag-burning bill with a wingut Rethug Senator. On this particular issue (working with Republicans), there is no clear difference between them.
No. And I think Josh Marshall is an Obama supporter. Nothing wrong with that, just that the blogs need to be careful too. I don’t want to start seeing in blogs what we’ve seen in the past media.
Just wanted to say to you that I appreciate how you’ve handled things around here, since I know you’ve been a Hillary backer all along. As things continue to heat up, it’s nice that FDL, both the posters and many commenters have kept it a nice place to hang.
Thanks, from an Obamatron!
HC=36% and OB=51% – 150 precincts reporting in LA
She co-sponsored that bill so that there wouldn’t be a flag burning AMENDMENT.
Lou Hou, that is not what I remember from the time. Maybe later we could look at this.
Thanks. I think we’re mostly all about getting the freaking republicans out of business.
Sister Souljah? Or Dan Rather?
With the caveat that I think that was an absolutely asinine comment, however it happened to burst out there like a turd in a punchbowl, I’m seeing a disturbing assault–not on the media in general, but on select targeted people. Maybe I’m over-reacting?
But MSNBC/NBC did no service to David Shuster…or their viewers…taking a respected journalist and turning him into an infotainment gasbag.
Huckabee has taken the lead in Louisiana!
BO=54 HC=34 270 precincts reporting in LA
Loo Hoo, that interpretation is just a bit too “meta” for me. If you are saying that she did something so that it wouldn’t be done, then the word “triangulation” does come to mind.
BO=52 to HC=38 with 10% reporting in LA
Here’s this, assuming you respect Matt Stoller.
10% of precincts reporting (I don’t know pop %)
Well that’s not a good reason to sponsor a horrible bill, is it? So if the Rethugs propose an anti-gay amendment, we should start working with Republicans to pass anti-gay bills?
The point is she crossed the aisle to work with Republicans, which you said you’re against. I’m saying these two don’t differ that much in that one respect.
Hmmm… We’d be hurting if they closed the road next to my precinct locale, also a school cafeteria…
HRC is my least favorit candidate of the Democratic big three, none of whom are saviors, but any could win an election, so any of them so OK with me.
Too bad if Shuster gets the axe.
However, corporate media discourse is toxic and destructive and potent force against grown-up poliitcal discssion in country. I think it has cost us elections. So his comment, by itself and taken alone, was not worth firing over, but it did not occur in a vacuum. So…. too bad. He will have to find another job. Cripe,s I have had to find another job through no fault of my own, so I don’t feel sorry for the guy.
Now, important to follow through with Matthews, Dowd, OReilly and the whole sick and useless crew.
Lou Hou. I didn’t read the Stoller bit. I just remember reading about this in the NYT when it happened, and thought at the time that she was wading into all the red meat true-Patriot junk for purposes of positioning herself for a future run for the presidency. Frankly it was a turning point in my respect for her. But, I might be wrong on what went down.
It’s very like Hillary’s current argument that DOMA was signed to forestall a federal Marriage Amendment to the Constitution. Bill signed DOMA to triangulate his way to victory in 1996.
Um, this was about the same time that the Patriot Act was passed. People were freaked out. I just felt like it was a good move to compromise on this. A law, not an amendment. Has anyone ever been imprisoned since this law for burning a flag?
In Louisiana?
updated at 6:45 PST … refresh?
I couldn’t agree more. The net loves David. He is one of the best and has really exposed a lot of Bush corruption; the Libby case, the attorney scandal, etc. He said he did something tacty and apoligized. I don’t think he should have even been suspended. Matthews has done far worse.
Well, that’s partly the point. There hasn’t exactly been an epidemic of flag-burning before or after her exciting law.
I believe in freedom of expression. Who ever got hurt from displaying a flag upside down, or displaying it on a teeshirt. It set up the whole government ueber alles meme.
Truer words were rarely, if ever, spoken. Huzzah!
Hillary is using the Schuster error to step on Obama’s victories today. I wonder if the gasbags will discuss both tomorrow?
Cripes, if they made that illegal they’d have to round up the entire membership of the Young Republicans, wouldn’t they?
Was Schuster fired or suspended for some time?
It is the complete and utter toxicity of the TradMed Village that makes singling out Shuster a little much. Where were her calls for Matthews’ resignation, or Dowd’s, or Noonan’s, or Quinn’s?
I agree. A flag is a symbol and nothing more. But remember when the Americans raised the American flag rather than the Iraqi flag in Baghdad?
Word has it that the WGA East is ready to approve the proposed deal and end the strike forthwith. Here’s a taste:
We still await news from the left coast. Their meeting is beginning now.
It ain’t over yet, but it’s looking good.
So it’s OK for Clinton to work with Republicans but not Obama?
Hey the media has loads of hit persons who use the title “journalist”.
The networks have the balls to have campaign advisers as commentators. That is way over the line.
Updated – latest results from LA above
Thank you so much!
Loo Hoo is correct. She co-sponsored a narrowly tailored flag burning bill.
I think it is a demonstration ’shock and awe’ tactic to get some notice. It is a sad situation, but I cannot object to a big public to-do over toxic and nasty corporate media discourse that has cost the Democrats big time politically over last decade. I don’t care if it is an HRC stunt, or whether Shuster has a better history than the rest. Some kind of notice had to be deliverd to the corporate media, so I cannot get too upset.
I think Obama will be the nominee, and hope he is capable of similar confrontation.
And I wish Edwards would have stayed in until Super Tuesday!
Richmond- a non serious comment of mine, but I’ve been driving around with an upside down flag sticker on my car for 3 years. I’ve gotten honks and fingers, but that’s about it. Although, putting up upside down really was a serious statement on my part.
and the spinning by the pundits begin. *sigh* You have all heard the ridiculous boxing they have attempted to do with the bases of both parties, so here is my analysis based on their analysis. This is snark because the characterizations of both bases have been a failed simplistic attempt to group people together into a ‘blocks’ by gender, race, education and class. The irony of course is that education and class cut across gender and race lines and gender cut across all of the above.
Caucus states do not favor working class people. That explains the overall wins he has had in caucus states. (It couldn’t be campaign decisions)
Hillary Clinton Base: blue collar, latino, women, whites
Barack Obama Base: blacks, young people, educated, upscale
Don’t many of these cross over or what color/ gender/ etc lines or am I as crazy as crackers here?
Hillary is using the Shuster error to step on Obama’s victories today. I wonder if the gasbags will discuss both tomorrow?
I think Hillary’s error of piling on Shuster is contributing to the better than 2-1 margins of Obama’s victories today. It’s the opposite of the “tearing up” bump she got in NH — and the same as the spanking she got in SC after her little experiment with race-baiting backfired. Look at the photos on TPM – Shuster looking like the decent guy that we all know he is and Hillary scowling like a blonde Michelle Malkin.
What I just noticed on the CNN web site — in LA Democratic turnout is stomping Republican turnout. Big time.
Sorry you experienced bad manners just because you exercised patriotic concern for your country.
If Democratic candidate wins pres and congress goes veto- and filibuster-proof Dem, I will be flying a flag and walking around with a flag lapel pin proudly. And won’t feel the need to keep a ‘ban Bush’ button in my pocket when I travel overseas.
Some perspective:
Pox Newz now EMPLOYS Karl Rove. Hillary has no problem appearing on Pox regularly. She just challenged Obama to a duel on Pox. Pox was created by and currently run by Roger “The Hut” Ailes, who personally produced the “barking dog” video of Chelsea when she was a teenager. Hill&Bill actually have lunch with Jabba the Ailes and Ruturd right now, and have had fundraisers put on by Ruturd.
David Shuster? Nuff said.
MSNBC projects Lousiana to Obama
MSNBC just called LA for Obama…
Excellent!
What do you mean?
Some kind of notice had to be deliverd to the corporate media, so I cannot get too upset.
I agree with the idea of taking on the corporate media, but if Hillary had any scruples she would have delivered notice to Fox News instead of taking campaign money from them.
Dayam, I now owe ya two cokes, Dood!
I caucused in WA today and our group was 3 to 1 for Obama.
Will someone please tell Noron to stop laughing?
I agree with you on that. But I will take what I can get with regard to setting media straight.
wes- A Dem will win the Prez! According to my vote, anyway. We just have to make sure about congress!
CNN now just called LA for Obama.
I’ve been surprised to see how quickly this Begala approved talking point has spread. Obama is shattering the records of small, individual donors. He is the “blue-collar” candidate, by far. Hillary is the BigMoney Dem by far.
http://opensecrets.org/pres08/…..8;sortby=4
I’m pretty sure that if this election actually takes place, which at this point is debatable IMHO, it is going to be a Democratic landslide.
I like to think positively and negatively at the same time.
So this white woman Hillary’s age voting for Obama means… I just love approved talking points!
Buchanan just said that with Obama leading in pledged delegates, denying him the nomination is a recipe for a repetition of the Dem Convention of 1968. Whoa…
Thank you for participating in democracy today! Anything else to report about your meeting?
Rachel Maddow…hm…
I guess old male white wingers don’t buy cupcakes.
Did you see my response this morning to your question in Pull up a Chair… What a thread BTW…
Would it do any good to attack Fox News on something like this? Seriously, would it do any good at all? Most everyone, including the die-hard Fox News watchers recognize the depths of ill-feeling toward Senator Clinton and all Dems there so what purpose would it solve? Business is usual is all it would be called. Senator Clinton attacks Fox News would result in:
A. Ho-hum, so what, that’s whatt all the liberals do to Fox and
B. They’d be cheering for it would have served their purpose in feeling they could get under her skin.
By standing up to a supposed liberal new organization and calling BS on their shenanigans it serves the same purpose and gets folks attention in a way that attacking Fox does not and cannot. By going after MSNBC first, she can then credibly go after Fox and say, “see, there’s no double standard here since I took on my supposed fellow liberals first.”
Well…since caucuses are structured by PRECINCT and socio-economic distinctions usually are fairly even in precincts the argument actually fails there. A precinct with a small number of participants will get delegates allocated to either the number of registered Party members or population. Thus the poor areas will have just as much “weight” as a wealthier area despite the number of people who come out in it.
I suspect that caucuses are just as democratic, if not more so, as general votes in that regard.
nobody has requested a McCain cupcake.
that’s because Huckabee licked off the frosting.
Obama organization is starting to spread in WI. New offices area opening up. Still no news from Hillary’s people.
Are you still here?
If that bakery had been selling studmuffins, however…
I doubt it…but she may be going after the dog that she can kick, rather than the dog she can’t. Her demands that Shuster be fired, however couched, may be directed aggression.
gotta see what happens in Texas, tho. Will go for Hill, my guess.
Updated above with latest from LA.
Rachel was just mentioning how divisive a brokered convention would be… Well, virtually all the web sites have already borne out the divisiveness… Each side has slandered and berated the other so far… Fortunately, it is not as prevalent here at the Lake…
Mon vieux…
?
I was talking about this theme I’ve seen several times in blogs and BigMedia where it’s being reported Obama’s base is people earning over $150,000 a year, while Hillary’s base is earning under $50,000. Regular pundit and Clintonista Paul Begala has been going around saying this, and no one questions it on-air. In reality, it is the exact opposite.
Or muffins made of yellowcake….
They are both mediocre democrats, but that makes them way way way way way better than the alternative.
salut, mon pote
Agreed. Hispanic turnout should decide the margin… Duh.
That was an AMAZING thread, and I did see your NYU response.
We were there at the same time. I honored the student strike in the spring after Kent State and stopped going to classes. This resulted in 4 “Incompletes” and an “F” for me and I never went back.
That was 1971, I think.
I think it’s hot that so many democrats are so entirely engaged.
HA!
I follow your reasoning, but the strategy doesn’t seem to be working. Take me for instance. I was for Edwards. After that I’ll admit that I marginally favored Obama, but I had nagging doubts that we might be better off with Hillary.
For the last 3 days, every time I see Hillary, I see Karl Rove, and when I see Karl Rove, I see RED.
Ahh thank you, i’m not a taco shy of a combination plate, after all.
Unfortunately, this utter crap along with the others still has legs and it just turns my stomach to see this totally lopsided and strange ‘blocking’.
I fully concur with that premise…
Whatever is happening…one thing is for sure…We the People are putting our collective foot down.
What’s a brokered convention?
I thought I was reinforcing your point by pointing out that, contrary to Begala’s “approved talking point,” I went completely counter to it. Which is, to channel S/N, central to my point… (Sorry, I just couldn’t resist!)
But what if it is a black latino college student who works two jobs?
Latino = which latinos?
Biodun’s story was really kewl.
Noron says AP calls Virgin Islands for Obama
Where no candidate gets enough committed delegates to win the nomination.
It’s kind of like a stalemate at the convention. At that point ANYTHING can happen.
But now it looks like the cons may have the same problem.
Now that’s some “glass half full” talk there. Impressive. Sure would be nice if that was the case.
However, I would say Obama’s shut out of Fox, starting in Jan of 2007 after all that “madrassa” BS (he just went on recently to break the streak, which disappointed me), then he and Edwards’ refusal to debate on Fox, and then Obama’s cold shoulder to O’Loofah as Falafel boy was trying to bully his way into an interview, did A LOT to diminish Pox’s reputation.
In light of that, I might think this would be the perfect time to pounce on Pox, while they’re losing ratings and vulnerable.
Landslidesville.
Where the nominees are tied going into the convention and the Super Delegates hash it out behind the scenes… More-or-less… ;-)
No one candidate has enough votes to win the nomination on the first ballot so they keep on voting. Pledged delegates are no longer required to vote for their original candidate so the back room horse trading begins and just about anyone can wind up being nominated. Why, Al Gore could even be drafted at this point.
If Obama is elected, how about Schuster for press secretary?
Ha! Now I see.
She has the most irritating laugh on the tubes.
Noran: Democrats are stronger than the Pukes.
Buchanan: Pukes are in a bad place all around, but the superdelegates could cause a real firestorm for the Dems…
Bring it the F on.
Kent State (and Jackson State) were both in May 1970.
If Obama received racist slights from the media parallel to the sexist BS visited on Clinton, and now on her daughter, there would be a massive outcry – as there should be. I understand her anger and think she may as well stand up to it and draw a line in the sand. If she doesn’t they’ll continue more of the same and she’ll lose anyway.
A simple majority is not enough? Someone has to get over 50%?
I swear you guys have got to have the weirdest and most incomprehensible electoral system in the known universe.
She really grins widely while delivering any kind of potentially bad news…annoying.
LooHoo@85;
And Kyle-Lieberman? Did she support that because she was afraid bush would invade Iran?
So it’s all about the delegate layout now. Obama completed dominated tonight, even more than expected, but the delegate dispersal gets a little strange sometimes.
I’ll just let it go and say I’ll happily vote for Clinton in November if she is the nominee. :)
Yeah. Dems have to get 100%, and Pukes just “arrange” the result…
wobbly- that is a bit more complicated. Goes back to a conversation newt and I had about enmity between black and hispanic communities, which came up in the CA election thread. Sadly, I was not shocked. Racism cuts in all directions. Sorry, if I am being a bit crypic here- no offense meant. Just that for various reasons, I think the hispanic vote (whatever that means) will be pro- Hill in Texas.
I’m not a committed (or committable) fan of either remaining Democrat at this time. I have significant reservations with both of them and the games that both have played.
All I know is either stands light years ahead of McCain (and Huckabee and all the other Rs) on virtually every issue there is and I will be voting for a Democrat in November 2008.
I won’t argue with ya there… However, sometimes Parliament doesn’t work the way ya’ll want either…! *g*
Ron Paul is right behind McCain in WA so far.
I just don’t get the McCain thing. The most winningest, hated candidate…ever.
The damage is probably already done. The fact that the Clinton campaign let this go on for six months is hard to understand. Taking on Schuster, a wonderful reporter and (most probably) democrat was ill advised, but at last, necessary. Only to be able to call out the press.
Looks like OH is going to play another major role in an election, of the nomination this time.
That worries me since Terry McAuliffe has spent years building the machine there, and I’m sure he can pull alot of strings there for Clinton. Obama still has a lot of ground to make up. He sure is heading in the right direction though.
Me too, although I would prefer the candidate’s last name began later in the alphabet. But, with a song in my heart, I’ll vote Democratic in November.
Nixon deciding to invade Cambodia more or less made sure that I got a college degree because I passed math, a mandatory class for freshmen as you know. You can’t graduate without passing in math. My prof decided to scrap finals and instead base the grades on work already done, which consisted of home assignments. Now I’m shit for math. And my roommates had helped my with home assignments.
Nixon’s Cambodia invasion spawned numerous protests in DC, especially in Lafayette Park–which I attended, and then you factor in Kent State, and the rest is history, literally.
no no not the whole racism versus sexism thing. I call bs on that. yes it is more socially acceptable to be sexist in this society but you can’t equate the two. Both are terrible and here is the caveat the black/latino/asian/native american populations are constituted of 50% women …so now you have sexism plus racism. That is why this argument about racism vs sexism does not work
Gosh! I’m a year older than I thought I was!
EEEW
A simple majority is enough but with Edwards having just suspended his campaign, he still has the delegates he had already gotten and any more that he might pick up. There are also some delegates listed formally as “uncommitted” so the rule is fifty per cent plus 1 of ALL voting delegates for the nomination.
And ALL voting delegates means the total number of delegates seated at the convention.
No. That vote was fucked. I totally agree.
So I take it your degree was in… history? ;-)
I have been listening to MSNBC. How come after Obama just whipped Hillary, they are still talking about her. No real kudos for him. Just Hillary talk.
New Update thread – pt 3 – above.
It is awful, and how can a laugh be awful? I fell awful saying it’s awful, but it’s awful.
Obama on CNN addressing Virginia Democrats.
The winning candidate is the one who gets 51% of the delegates to the convention. I think that the magic number for the Dems is 2,025.
You can read all about it here.
Jane was stone on the money, about Hillary’s bonehead move in agreeing to a “debate” on Fox.
One more example of her “political savvy”.
Obama’s got the mojo, and if he’s stupid enough to show up at Faux to help her give them debate credibility, he becomes tweedle-dee to her tweedle-dum. Which would play right into the hands of her supporters, as they keep saying that there’s no difference between them.
They wish.
Hillary and FauxNews; a marriage made in media hell.
Especially, considering what Fox has aimed at she and her family, and democrats and progressives in general.
Obama needs to stay miles away from that charade, and just point to it and smile. :o)
I went to an SDS demonstration in Lexington, KY in late May 1970 where Bill Kuntsler spoke. Interesting times. Interesting times.
Saw that Joe Trippi is going to be on FTN tomorrow.
I have to agree Loo Hoo. It’s probably too little, too late and this is most certainly not the most deserving target. But have you noticed that even the better press people have been taking unfair digs at Hillary lately? It has to be discouraging.
but the problem with that is that the premise is false. There are black latinos (lots of them) and that these issues have somehow been extrapolated from instances that are isolated and pertain to a group(s) within the latino community. You have black mayors that were elected overwhelmingly by latinos (see Tom Bradley, Dinkins, etc.)
You can understand how enraging it is to have the group that has power and has historically had power to define who we minorities are and to pit us against one another
I believe the 2025 is correct but it is 50% plus one delegate, not 51%
LooHoo, thank you. I use too much snark, sometimes. Sorry.
12,000 posts over the last five years on a basically conservative bluegrass site, with 11,000 of them about politics, will do that to you. :o)
You can add one more 50+ white women for Obama to the tally.
Because it comes from profound stupidity.
Hah … Obama smacking Bush & Cheney as only he can …
Obama just said my cousin Dick Cheney…
Yes. I will support Obama if he is the nominee, with best hopes that there aren’t skeletons Rove knows about and hasn’t exploited.
He says that a lot. I hope he’s not secretly proud of it in some obtuse way.
Good luck to Rove and anyone else who takes on the Dem nominee …
English and French. It’s interesting that you say history though, because I’ve brought historical perspectives to all my FDL posts…and in fact Jane offered me today a weekly slot at FDL, which I accepted. I’ll more or less continue to bring historical perspectives to topical issues so that readers can understand those issues better…
Yes, actually, she says she worked to modify K-L to remove the most offensive language and ensure it didn’t give this Preznit the right to make war.
Unbelievable.
Obama is frickin’ electrifying.
Wow.
Obama is enjoying himself. I really think at this point he thinks he can be prez…He believes it. You can tell. He seems really confident all of a sudden…
For better or worse, he has all the momentum.
living wagesssssssssssssssssssss
Yes, he can.
Me too. Absolutely. I’ll probably even get very excited about it – after I get over my disappointment. Hey I supported Kerry to the end – and even cried when he lost. So I think I can get behind Obama – a much superior candidate.
But before Obama gets the nod, everyone needs to start imagining what Obama v. McCain is really going to look like – even assuming Obama is as clean as he appears. I’m not saying it looks bad, but I’m not sure about it yet.
Whoo HOO! Most wonderful.
Obama just said I’m getting more money as a teacher! I’m gonna hold him to it!!!
If you cut up a flag and sewed it onto a teeshirt you would be arrested *g*
He gives a good speech, don’t he?
Excellent… Go for it!
Yup. good for you. But I think they make a difference about a “real” flag vs a symbol/image of flag. Alas, is a “real” flag, a “real” anything at all?
Hey there…you know your email never showed up? Should I now start telling people about the toobz in your institution? The ramifications won’t be pretty…*g*
On flag burning. Again, when did burning a flag hurt anyone? There were a zillion blue dog dems who could have signed onto it. Why did Hillory want to do it?
She’s creepy for sure, LS. Scares the bee-jeebus out of me!
good point. And honestly a majority of the prominently female Kumbaya singers of the 60s are supporting Hillary not Obama (demographics)
Thanks! We have NYC in common. And your comment this morning about being tossed into the Tombs during Giuliani Time because of your protest after Amadou Diallo was heartbreaking…, as I told Jane in private email exchange…Courage, bro..
Biodun – those two just came back to me again. It says they are sent and they are held in limbo than get pushed back in my toobz. My others went out today (including a test run or two to myself). You probably put up a blocker against me. Or, you are in cohoots with Eshu *g*
Where are you guys watching Obama?
Well, I guess if you imagine a flag with a picture of Dick Cheney in the corner where the stars should be, it might resonate.
Thanks bro… It was an experience being treated like a common crook by NY’s finest… and then going to court 7 times and having it tossed out in the end.
FDL has wonderful collection of posters and front pagers. This is my first and last stop every day!
Obama was on MSNBC. I think that tonight his speech had the added quality of truly perceiving himself as the victor.
Over. MSNBC. Which they were careful to state that Hillary’s speech was on earlier.
Noron said that Obama won “the Virgin Island” (singular.)
No way…no Eshu either. I blame your institution…*g* But did you hear from Jane?
This is my first and last stop every day!
That’s another thing we have in common. FDL is my homepage…I mean, I have My Website, My Facebook, My Yahoo and all that, but…
