. Washington Post endorses Donna Edwards. Woo hoo! If you wanna volunteer and help give Al Wynn more time to spend with Mitt Romney’s family you can do it here.
. I would like to thank everyone responsible for keeing the tone of the discussion around here in reasonable decibles relative to what’s happening on other sites, and credit is largely due to our fabulous mods. We manage to talk about very controversial stuff and nobody goes nuclear. Haven’t had to ban anyone yet. I’m very grateful.
. CNN reporting that Huckabee is kicking McCain’s ass in Kansas, 60% to 20% and is calling the race for him. I’m watching him on TV now. He’s the only living conservative who was born with a functional sense of humor.
. Speaking of which…Jerome Armstrong should be writing comedy.
. Make your predictions for the weekend. Obama is favored to win everything but Maine, and both candidates are campaigning heavily there today.
| State | C/P | Delegates |
| Washington | caucus | 78 |
| Nebraska | caucus | 24 |
| Virgin Islands | primary | 3 |
| Louisiana | primary | 56 |
| Maine | caucus | 24 |
Place your bets on what you think respective state delegate pickups will be.

Jane!
…and, belatedly, zed…
ZED?? Keep those results coming…
Zed?
MP! So good to see you again. Where ya been?
…and, on point, ’tis a fool’s errand to predict delegate counts. So here I go:
Obama will get ~ 35 more delegates from this set than HRC.
I hate it when you get to the thread and it you seem to be first…BUTTTT Now to DIGG this one!!1
I’m watching Obama speak in Maine…. having lived there for 10 years, I’m thinking they may not be all that impressed with him… looking at the crowd behind him – doesn’t much look like the natives… more like college kids from out of state…
Jane!
My call is this:
Washington, Louisiana, Virgin Islands-Obama
Nebraska, Maine-Clinton
Hurray for Donna Edwards! The Post endorsement may make a big difference, giving her an Establishment imprimatur for aspirational middle class African American voters in MD-04. Kicking out an incumbent is never an easy decision, but having the approval of the big newspaper’s editorial board for your vote can make a difference with some voters.
I had been enjoying an 18 month sabbatical, but my life of leisure is in jeopardy, largely through my own efforts. So a bit less time here (and on my own, humble, irregular blog).
I sent you this linky, in case you talk about the writers strike, should it in fact end shortly.
So, waddya hafta do to get thrown outta this joint, anyway?
oh, we are supposed to give our guesses? NE, LA, WA to Obama, ME to Clinton… with WA being pretty competitive for delegates, and Clinton getting her fanny kicked in NE and LA….
I got an e-mail back from my young republican niece in AZ after super Tuesday and she told me she voted for Romney to “send a message to McCain.” I suspect this is what is happening in Kansas. It seems from what I saw of coverage at CPAC, that was the mood there as well. I actually made myself watch Ann Coulter’s speech from there on C-SPAN last night. Worse than any late night horror movie you could ever hope to watch. The looks on the faces of the members in the audience was something to see. Her fans are way, way scarier than Ann is.
I tried reading Jerome and such over at mydd and found that I needed brain shampoo afterwards. I must say that I appreciate the tone and balance over here.
I won’t even try to make a predictions but I’m watching, hoping and wishing both candidates well. (tired of the acrimony…or I’m deeper in the cult than I thought)
Gatinha (the Barackite)
Washington: Obama-50, HRC-28
Loisiana: Obama-30, HRC-26
Virgin Is: Obama-3, HRC-0
Maine: Clinton-14, Obama-10
Nebraska: Clinton-13, Obama-11
Throw me in the pool!!
She got it last year too actually, but it didn’t convince Emily’s List that she was a legitimate candidate, which disappointed some of us. Was very glad to see Emily’s List jump in early this year and endorse Donna, though it’s my understanding they didn’t really get behind her with $$$ (but my info could be old).
Agree–Huckabee does have a sense of humor- and is perhaps the most likable person in the race—can’t save him from bein a radical gooper though
yea, I watched it too. felt like I was adding to her aura, but I watched. the audiens at her talk; a whole lot of young Yaffers and other freaks, who have better things to do than serve in the awesome war they wholeheartedly endorse.
Particularly scary was her harping on McCain for being soft on Gitmo and wanting to close it. I didnt know that was a genuflection point for the wingers.
She also was freaky in endorsing waterboarding; “a little water pored up your nose and no permanent harm. a lot of Fox anchors are doing it to boost their ratings.” [edited by mod]
[Mod Note; At FDL, please do not wish harm on others through any types of violent acts — even if in jest. Thanks!]
The original title of this post was “so who do I have to f*@k to get out of this primary” but I thought the better of it. (It’s what everybody starts saying during the 4th or 5th week of a movie shoot).
Nice, RonD. I like the specifics.
Here’s my prediction: Huck will win Kansas. :o)
Which will help move the GOP platform a little further to the right; which will make it that much easier for Obama to crush the assholes in November, since he hasn’t been truckling to the right, nearly as much as has Clinton. :o)
BTW – that Obama website really IS a knee-slapper!
You should have kept it, I would have ran in here sooner LOL
Barack’s in BANGOR??
fer sure they shipped all those kids in from some place!
Obama’s on a roll.
“Haven’t had to ban anyone yet. I’m very grateful.”
I haven’t changed — same as always. Yet I have been banned from Americablog twice (but the last time over a year ago). But it was only for 2 days. Now CrooksAndLiars is a different story! They banned me about 2 months ago, and still haven’t taken the ban off. Why? They claim I posted 6 identical comments in one thread. Which I didn’t do — what’s the point of that?? The moderator and I went back and forth through e-mail several times, and then I gave up. (I asked her to send me the proof, but she couldn’t, except for the ONE I really, truly sent.) She claimed I used 5 different IP addresses. I think something was missing upstairs there. Too funny.
OT as usual.
Exactly five years ago , in a galaxy far, far away.
Harry Turtledove, call your office.
Has anyone heard anything more about the La turnout? Obama had a huge turn out for appearance at Tulane; Pres. WJC was also in NO for Hill. Katrina got rid of a large % of the black vote.
So, indigenous Maine college kids look different from carpetbagger college kids?
Why thank you. ’tis an honor. Will we have the caucus results tonight, or will they continue till tomorrow?
Props, of course, to the 1930’s-era Hollywood roots of the quote.
I dunno – I think the cruder crowd would’ve gone for that in a big way.
In what way? I have not read it. Thanks
Want more Bush?- vote McCain!
Some local Kansas folks were thinking that with Romney out and McCain having such a huge lead, turnout for the GOP caucuses would be down.
Egg, meet face.
The TheoCons came out in force today in Kansas, to tell the GOP leadership that they weren’t going to roll over and go along with the coronation of St. John. Even having the support of KS Senator Sam Brownback didn’t help McCain much. Brownback not only endorsed McCain, but has been out campaigning on his behalf, but it didn’t convince the True Believers that McCain was really one of them. Kansans for Life really pushed this one hard, and it showed in the results.
You are right, I would have.
carpetbagger college kids? he-he… Maine is a pretty small state with lots of colleges… EVERYBODY is from out of state at the schools…
I’m trying to think which school would be close to Bangor… Colby maybe… but its not big… just looks very “stagecrafted” to me… those kids got bussed in…
Huckabible! Great to see the southern rejection of McCain.
Didn’t want to peak too soon. Long way to go.
Don’t worry, it’ll get used.
I voted this morning at the middle school, and can report that it was a ghost town. The local media is calling for a very low turnout in Louisiana, maybe 15%. It’s disapointing for sure, but after the apathetic response to Katrina I can’t say I’m surprised by this news. I was sure hoping for better, though.
The best part is I took the kids with me, and they got voting stickers to wear. My dad came by this afternoon and asked the big kid what his sticker was for. He told him we voted this morning and announced “I’m a Democrat, granddaddy!” His granddaddy is still driving around with a Fred Thompson sticker on his vehicle. Too bad I didn’t have a camera handy.
How can CNN call for Huckabee before the polls are closed?
Ayah! I didn’t see a plaid flannel shirt amongst them… ;-)
Now, theres trouble busin in from outta state
And the d.a. cant get no relief
Gonna be a rumble out on the promenade
And the gamblin commissions hangin on by the skin of his teeth
Well now, evrything dies, baby, thats a fact
But maybe evrything that dies someday comes back
Put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty
And meet me tonight in atlantic city
McCain’s Kansas loss certainly doesn’t bode well for Brownback’s veep prospects.
Well have everything but Maine (which is tomorrow) coming in tonight.
Hmmm. The thought has been that McCain has this thing in the bag. I’m not convinced. Huck shows no signs of bowing out, and he’s now the only True Believer in the race. I think he’s going to do MUCH better now that it’s just him and McCain, because now Coulter and Limbaugh et al can tell people who to vote FOR. In the past, they’ve just been ranting, “DON’T VOTE FOR MCCAIN!” Their listeners, most of whom aren’t all that bright, were just hearing “Blah blah blah MCCAIN!” I think Huck’s going to do a lot better now that people are hearing his name.
I’m a lumberjack, and I’m okay.
I sleep all night. I work all day.
Mounties : He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.
I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shoppin’
And have buttered scones for tea.
Mounties: He cuts down trees. He eats his lunch.
He goes to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays he goes shopping
And has buttered scones for tea.
UofMaine has a campus in Bangor – that would be more “local” kids… but I think they mostly teach forestry…
McCain has it locked up- short of croakin on the stump.
Will there be one-on-one debates between McCain and Jethrene’s hubby? I don’t think Old Lord has the stamina to debate just one guy for ninety minutes. He needs breaks while other candidates talk.
You saw Hucky beat Mac 60-24 in Kansas…I don’t think those peoples’s Democratic neighbors are going to break for Obama. I think HRC is stronger in Kansas than polling may indicate.
Magic Eight Ball says “…results unclear.”
very, very “lofty”! (lotta clouds and sunshine)… heavy duty imagery…
Unless Brownback pulled him aside and said, “Look, I’ll do my best for you back home, but right now you have too many fences to mend by Saturday. I’ll be out there for you, but I’ll tell you this: Saturday you are NOT going to win the KS caucuses.”
A win definitely would have helped his chances at the veepship, but if he gave good advice and counsel before the defeat it’s not necessarily the kiss of death.
No matter who McCain chooses, he’s got to find someone with acceptable conservative credentials, especially among the TheoCons. Brownback still fits that bill at least as well as anyone else, and with time perhaps he could sway the right wingers to back the McCain ticket — with “time” being the key word.
I don’t know, but the turn out in LA is so low, I suspect HRC has a better chance there then she thought. She will run better that expected in WA and NB, too, I bet.

Is Kansas a winner take all for the Repugs?
It’s getting really scary out there, kiddies! Just you watch, Huckabuck will win the nomination. Then it’ll be a bloody battle between the fundamentalists, creationists and everyone else.
No, seriously, he does scare me!
RevDeb – I’m watching Obama in Maine this afternoon… I would describe Mainers as very down-to-earth (VERY) and I think they will find Obama to be much too “citified”… clouds isn’t an image that is gonna impress them much.
Win what nomination?
Huckleberry CAN’T win- it would require a near sweep of all the remaining states. I don’t know if math is a science or an art- but it should be practiced.
Tweety will do his speechifying.
republican Or the very very conservative!
Thas what I’m talkin bout!
The Dems caucused in KS on Tuesday . . . and Obama smoked Clinton 74% to 26%.
Don’t ask why KS Dems caucused one day and the GOP on another. It’s a long story, and the short answer is money.
neva hoppin GI
Did he inhale?
you know my mom calls Huckabee “Huckleberry” – not knowing its the wrong name – I never bother to correct her…
do you think that is mean?
Well within the realm of possibility.
Better watch your Ps & Qs, TSF, you’re right on the edge. /s
Jane!
Great job.
Typo alert: McCain’s “as”?
“Keeing”
You’re right about the tone elsewhere on the blogosphere; DailyKos was on fire, full of ad hominem and diatribe. It was embarrassing.
Bob in HI
LOL
Sounds like he inhaled and blew Smoke rings…well, scratch one. It was on the list.
“Who do I have to fuck to get out of this primary?”
:o) :o) :o)
Ms. Hamsher, across our occasional disagreements on the candidates, that is a SERIOUS endorphin overload. :o)
You’ll be hearing from my personal injury lawyer. :o)
I doubt it. Huck will likely issue a debate challenge, but I don’t think McCain’ll bite. McCain looks like death warmed over these days, and he’s starting to sound like it, too. He’d get crushed in an evening debate.
Well, republicans…..
don’t forget bush got elected twice – they used the wrong math
Huckleberry don’t need no stinkin’ math. He’s got FAITH. Besides, with a relatively minimal cost, he’ll vacuum up all the anti-McCain votes, and become a hero to the wingnuts. Then he’ll get great exposure at the convention. Maybe he’s thinking about 2012.
Bob in HI
Hi Jane -
Evening, dawgs.
“Hey! Who do I have to F*@k to get off this picture!”, hmmm, sounds familiar ;)
Almost as ubiquitous as, “If they make me I’m taking my name off of this picture!”
But “afraid to debate” isn’t the image McCain needs with the Keyboard Kommandos.
I’m doing a dance to celebrate for Donna – and I gave her a donation the other day since I can’t get there to volunteer – wish I could.
Last year at Take Back America I happened to end up sitting right near her during a session, we had never met so she had no idea who I was or that I was blog involved – and I could overhear her telling her friends about how great the netroots folks were… it was cool to hear.
And you meet her and just know she’s the real deal.
WaPo – thank you! (wonder if L’il Debbie will fuss)
Huckabee win the nomination? We can only dream.
I left out in my previous post that did agree with Ann C. that the villagers waited too long to make their voice heard that there were no true conservative candidates running for president on the GOP side. She said what they are doing now in their sending McCain the message is too little too late and they should have made more effort during the debates and pre- Florida primary. I personally think that the GOP voters were caught off guard and fooled by the MSM when they handed clear front runner status to McCain’s after the victory in Florida.
I know! makes me laugh too!
but there I go, letting my poor old mother sound like an idiot just for my own amusement!
Other than the relatively boring side show of WHICH moderate democrat is going to be the candidate- this thing’s pretty much on hold until Labor Day.
There’s more to that Post article than their endorsement of Donna. They also endorsed Wynn’s puppetmaster, Hoyer, and they made it clear they want to see the occupation of Iraq continued. Donna’s race is way more important to me this weekend than the scuffling between tweedle dee and tweedle dum– although, as you know, I support tweedle dum.
The great thing about being John McCain is that you can tell jokes to yourself.
Of course he’s thinking about 2012! He and Brownback are the only two credible wingnuts left. In 2006, the rest of them suffered humiliating defeats. And Brownback looks like one of the perps on “Law & Order: SVU”. Huck’s going to be around for a LONG time.
Or maybe they wanted the opportunity to see him in person. I grew up in a small part of the world and if anyone running for the presidency (democrat of course) had come my way, I would have been there in a heartbeat. I’m not saying that was the case but you never know
Loved McCain’s quote that when ya get old ya can hide yer own easter eggs. He’s been doin it for YEARS!
They wanted another Reagan?
Well- they got im.
What happens to the delegates to the big nomination shindig who are there for people who have dropped out of the race? Do they get to pick someone else who is still in?
Stupid question, I know.
do you go through each thread looking for typos?
dream a little dream
or a nightmare?
Many of the Hucksters supporters that call in to CSPAN call him Hucklebee.
Howie! Damn you!
Now I can’t get Pachelbel out of my head.
oh, I agree – he’s a great big deal in Bangor… but there’s something about the kids that don’t look like locals… the clothes? the haircuts? something…
I could be wrong – maybe Bangor’s changed a great deal since I lived in ME 20 years ago…
FrankP, must repectfully disagree. He’s going to sit this one out very carefully, and when the R get stomped this Nov, he will take over the party.
Please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth and taste-
Jeb Bush in 2012. Count on it.
Jebidiah in 12? There will still be two many people alive who remember the stupid brother
Oh, I was posing that possibility to account for the non-locals :)
Again, we can only dream.
I like Maine- golf courses, ocean, and lobster. What could be better- in August?
I just threw up in my mouth a little.
The Bushes will have to wait for an entire generation to die off before goin after the White House again-
Jerome – “California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, you wallowed in darkness.”
Wait a minnit….. there is a county in Arizona who did NOT wallow …. its the rest the damn state that did though. We did our part! :-(
We need to name some things after GW Bush. How bout rest rooms?
If the candidate completely withdrew from the race and does not allow his name to be put into nomination, they vote for whomever they want.
If the candidate merely suspended his campaign, then the delegates remain pledged to him. Presumably, his name would be placed in nomination, and these folks would then be bound to vote for him. Of course, there are some candidates who have let themselves be nominated, in order to hear someone say all those great things about them, and then “magnanimously” withdrew in favor of the eventual nominee.
One of the many reasons why people at this point generally suspend their campaign, rather than formally withdraw from the race. (Fundraising rules are the biggest reason, though.)
Pachelbel got such a HUGE response. I was shocked. But Corey Hart/Willard will wipe out anything.
rw, I am totally expecting Jeb to emerge as a major powerin the national R Party. Think of it. 30% will vote for him because he’s a Bush. I think there is another 15-20% that will say, “Well he’s a Bush, but h’s not as stupid as W!” That’s within spitting disyance of a majority. And that, as they say, is close enough for rock and roll. :)
I was praying they’d have a brokered convention so they could wind up with Jeb. There would be no one better to run against this year than a Bush or Cheney.
Thanks – I was wondering what would happen with Romney’s candidates, for example, or if there are enough of them to make a difference. Did he suspend or bail?
I’m sorry, Wobbly!
{{{wobblybits}}}
Suspend.
He’s hoping McCain stumbles, and the convention calls him back as the conservative savior. Either that, or he’s positioning himself for 2012, so that after a McCain loss he can come back to the GOP voters and say “see, I told you so . . .” Of course, he’d do it with tears in his eyes, more in sorrow than in anger.
Actually, by stopping the bush/clinton IV regime RIGHT NOW, it negates future runs by any of them.
Kinda like stopping making more terrrrists by stopping iraq. Same premise.
We have to stop bush/clinton IV now as it only begs to continue this hatfields and mccoy thang into the future….. Go Obama. :-D
watching Hillary in ME – her crowd looks like typical Mainers…
I dunno, Huckabee may crack jokes and all, and I’ll give him points for a sharp, if meanspirited wit, but golly, doesn’t anybody else see the angry storm trooper under that friendly preacher veneer?
LL Bean shirts and hats with earflaps?
Here’s what I see, FWIW:
Democrats win in November. Bush recession drags on, and the combination of the economy tanking as the Dems take over will be used as a weapon against us. At that point, it is in the R’s interest to maximize the pain, to make it worse for D’s, so look for highly discipline dR obstructionism to continue. R’s retake Congress in 2010, and begin impeachment hearings. Jeb announces for 2012.
Ghod help us.
Eh-yuh!
you must mean if hillary is elected because that’s the only way that can even be in the realm of possibilty.
the hats come off indoors! (and LL Bean is a little too preppy for a real Mainer)
;-)
That was mean spirited and I was angry when I saw it and read through the comments (disclaimer: other comments called it out for what it was) as not only was the post nasty but it just fueled the mud slinging that took place in the comments.
But I have always believed that people resort to behavior like this (personal attacks — be it name calling, insinuations, insults,, etc when they can’t argue on the merits. That is why I like it here, we may not agree and it does get heated but cooler, logical heads always prevail
I think mean-spirited about sums it up. I think he could be a very nasty person.
fwiw- FDLer who lives in rural Maine reported seeing mostly Obama signs and bumper stickers- along with a few for Ron Paul
Perhaps. If the Dems have any sense (and we know they don’t), they’ll make damn sure that there’s so much dirt on Georgie that the whole Bush family is in the cold for the next 20 years.
Thanks. It’s okay, I have recovered and am dulling the pain with help of a caipirinha (I know carnival is over but I still had some cachaca left over) and listening to a little reggae music ala Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash (RIP).
I guess we will see! there certainly is plenty of Obama country in ME (and I would think that Ron Paul would be exceptionally popular)… fwiw – the only sign I saw in So Cal was one for Mittens…
very strange year for signs and bumper stickers…
Report from one caucus location in Washington:
http://www.king5.com/news/spec…..fcdeb.html
Not much “unification” going on there, is there?
OC- and, I asked him a more general question about the sentiment where he was- all he had to go on was the signs and bumper stickers!
Whether playing football or electing candidates, a good ground game is tough to beat…
funny! Mainers love their politics… town councils – all that… surprising nobody is yakking…
Hillary is still going after MSNBC. New letter from her today to that network:
http://tpmelectioncentral.talk…..d_shus.php
I hope they go after Tweety! But I really wish she’d go after Fox News as well.
OC- maybe you can answer- unclear to me, and I tried teh google- is the caucus also the time that Dem candidate for house is voted, or is that separate?
I can report from my WA precinct, 26 people showed up, 16 for Obama, and Clinton got either 9 or 10. (There was one person who kinda grouped with the Clinton supporters, but I don’t actually know if they committed or not.)
Lively, opinionated, group. It was a blast. There were 5 precincts at one location, and at least 100 people were there. In 2004 there were maybe 10 from my precinct. To go from 10-26 is pretty great.
lobster bibs?
“do you go through each thread looking for typos?”
No, but Jane has the opportunity to go back and edit her top post. If I were in her shoes, I’d want to know.
Bob in HI
Reminds me of the Imus situation. What he said was dispicable and worthy of condemnation, but he was the only big time Dem supporter on MS radio. The same with Shuster. It is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Or, rather self-interest rather than party interest. But I guess they are using this for fund raising purposes, so….
The ticket on the GOP side WILL be McCain-Huckabee.
Ah jeez, it really may be that. Very funny indeed. Talk about an oxymoron ticket.
bob- I’ve been at FDL for ages. Jane hasn’t commented about the typo/ spelling issue in the last two years *g*, but way back when she said she was happy to have a heads up on spelling/ typos. Doubt this has changed. *g*
The problem with it is it would go a LONG way to re-unite the GOP.
Gawd, I love our Congressional Progressive Caucus…
http://www.commondreams.org/news2008/0208-02.htm
CTuttle thanks for this: There was a small piece in the NYT today on the upcoming “eavesdropping” vote. I think, this is one of the first times they have brought this up (correct me someone). And, of course it is a Saturday (meaning no one reads the paper this day) but it might mean that the story is getting a bit more traction.
A move afloat to help keep Shuster from being fired: http://www.dailykos.com/story/…../73/453519
Thank GAWD. I vote for the Progressive Caucus to collectively replace both Pelosi and Reid. Make THEM the House AND Senate.
I’m surprised that none of the Proprietrixes have made any calls to arms about the impending votes on Tuesday… Singling out the turncoat Dems…
I wish, but it won’t happen I bet. What I am curious about is whether we could replace the band of 12 (6 dems, 6 repubs middle of the roaders, pro-war people) with a new band of 10 or 12 pro-Constitution types (i.e. are there any Republicans who are as worried as we are about what is happening to us on privacy issues? Don’t there have to be?
proprietrix – LOL. I will have to remember that one.
Heh, it is a word and a gender specific one at that… ;-)
I just read down the thread and I have to say…I love the comments about Maine! Living heeyah for my whole life, I havtah say…it’s gonnah be a cockah of a cawcus tomorrah! Yessah. LOL
