FOR CLARITY’S SAKE: For clarity’s sake, let’s say it again: In today’s hard-copy New York Times, Dowd compares Obama (sorry—“Obambi”) to a “Hollywood starlet.” But that paragraph has been disappeared on-line, and it’s been disappeared from Nexis. It’s hard to avoid a possible thought: At long last, someone at the Times may have noticed the fact that their scribe is unwell.
Dear NYT: We’ve already had Nancy Drew Does Iraq courtesy of Judy Miller. Can you please pull the plug on the Norma Desmond Show already?

Jane!
Modo needs to retire. Isn’t she old enough by now?
Jane!!!
OMG. I remember laughing at her columns five or six years ago, but I cannot read them any longer. She is filled with hatred. So sad.
Digby or Jane would be great replacements for Modo.
I like Maureen Dowd, she’s frickin’ crazy but you have to accept that in some of the ladies.
Modo’s up to her old tricks again, eh?
And a good number of the fellas, too, dude.
Easy does it.
XCUSE?
Totally.
You, my friend, are in a shit load of trouble.
Ouch. That’s Grade-A right there.
To MoDough’s credit, she did reference an Onion headline in her last Meet the Russert appearance. Maybe that’s it! She’s become an Onion wannabe, and is just failing miserably.
Oh well, the NYT doesn’t need to worry. The huge influx of readers with the Bill Kristolnacht addition, and the rabid and massive Bobo Brooks following will keep circulation up.
Sorry you all but I meant crazy in an artistic sort of way. Like they say all artists are loose in the head to be so creative.
To hell with MoDo. We don’t need any more like her. If anything, we need more Jane Hamshers.
The Times edited MoDo? That is more than they ever did to Judy Miller and she lied/ran stories with only one source about WMD.
I’m guessing Modo wants to be in on the expected GOP hit on Obama in response to Super Tuesday and the Times wants no part of it.
B S
OK, you need to quit digging…
You, my friend, are still in a shit load of trouble.
Artists are not crazy or loose in the head. Artists
reflect what is going on in the world. Or what should
be going on in the world.
Disclaimer:
I am an artist.
You are actually digging a deeper hole.
Run while you can!
(from an artistic female who has been described as “fricken crazy” at times)
You go person.
Dowd’s 55, a daughter of Irish immigrants. Not THAT old.
Maureen needs the hook. Her time has passed. She is like a ripe cheese — just off.
marshen, if you’re still digging, the Darcy Burner press office may have work for you…
well said.
I can’t imagine anyone describing MoDo’s work as “artistic”. I suppose she does use a high amount of creativity in dreaming up the crap she writes… of course, the same could be said about Bill Kristol. (He’s neither an “artist” nor a “fricken crazy woman”.)
I have noticed a slew of horrible pointless silly vacuous celeb pundit opinion columns in the NY Times over the last week. And also seems like normally reliable columnists such as Rich and Kristoff are lowering themselves down to the Dowd/Brooks/Kristoff level if dishonest tendentious inanity. This is bad since those two can usually be relied upon to include some solid anlysis, information, and even once in awhile, facts.
Half the time the bigshot opinion columns over last ten days have been clown shows.
I prefer ‘piffle’. I notice Glenn Greenwald uses ‘prattle’ Whatever it is, it is either vicious or silly, depending on your frame of mind. If many readers take any of it seriously, then it is dangerous.
Can you imagine how cool it would be to have Jane, or Christy,
Digby, and I am leaving out quite a few, as columnists at the NYT.
But no we cannot have sanity and compassion in this country..not allowed.
Modo is bat sh*t crazy and that has nothing to do with her gender.
Have you ever seen her on TV? – The girl needs to recheck her dosage.
Ouch! Dang, Doc…
Then how come Vincent Van Gough cut his ear off?
I am an artist too.
Big OOPS! when I typed
“Dowd/Brooks/Kristoff level”
I meant
“Dowd/Brooks/Kristol level”
Quite a difference there, even if I do often disagree with Kristoff.
I just ain’t gettin’ my props, man!
If Obama has a closet full of skeletons, as the Clinton campaign keeps suggesting we should fear, why hasn’t the Clinton campaign revealed them?
Serious question.
Isn’t there an ethical problem with revising a newspaper article post publication in print (assuming there is no note a revision was make)?
Because he was male and deranged…! ;-)
Jane,
i wrote a letter of complaint to the NYT after her most recent knife between Hillary’s ribs. i think she’s been hanging out with Coulter. Modo has become seriously repulsive ……
Cause he had a std and was really fucked up. Syphlis they say. Or was bi polar. Fucked up and beautiful. A wonder of a man.
Sarah Vowell did a terrific job subbing last summer if they can’t bring themselves to hire “lefty bloggers”.
Is Jane still here? I ain’t touchin’ that age thing. Man, but she pounded Richmond this morning. I’m warnin’ y’all. Stay away from that.
Dosage of what, though? I’m always trying to guess what this or that person is on.
I was convinced during one of the Kerry-Bush debates that Bush was on Thorazine, but nah, everyone makes those cud-chewing jaw-thrusting facial grimaces, right?
That is true. She seems to have a number of ‘issues’ many of them connected to coolness, gender/power interactions, bring in on the kewl crowd. Maybe a good point of comparison would be Matthews on the other side of the gender aisle.
She is different than Kristol or Brooks, who are good old fashioned hack journalists. They have an act that earns them big bucks, celebrity and influence. They are like crusty old carnies who run freak shows. They are professionals, in the worst sense of the word.
This isn’t the first article I have seen on her seeming fixations, they have been appearing every once in a while at other sites too, with more frequency.
Ann Althouse is going to have a new friend soon it seems.
I have been reading Mike McConnell’s Threats Assessmnet off and on today. It is interesting for what it does and does not say and the Administration spin that permeates it. Basically, if this is the way the intelligence (and I use that term avisedly) community views the world, we are so screwed.
Jane forgot Michael Gordon. He’s just as bad as Judy.
I forgot to put in the link:
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/p…..timony.pdf
wesgpc, it’s funny you say that. I happen to have CNN Anderson Cooper on in the background, and I’m amazed at the dribble/piffle/prattle/horsecrap “America’s Most Trusted News Source” is “reporting” tonight. They have Glenn Beck as the main host, talking about how he’ll vote for Hillary instead of McCain. They also spent a good amount of time discussing how sad and terrible it is that the media won’t leave poor Britney alone… including the footage of her being hounded by paparrazi and a medical expert (who doesn’t know her) talking about how bad her life is… along with another “report” on how Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose (with a medical expert that didn’t examine him). The worst part is that Anderson Cooper keeps talking about how they don’t like to report about Britney and Heath Ledger’s death, but geez… everyone wants to hear it, so they’re going to spend a bunch of time talking about it and how the media circus is out of control.
I’m not surprised at the dribble that files the TV and papers like the NYT today. The celeb punditry is vapid but cheap. The media consolidation rules in this country have dumbed everything down, removing competition for accurate content.
Thank goodness we have blogs.
You’re obviously not a psychiatrist – I am.
The assertion that one member of an occupational group had a given malady – and (by implication) all members of that group therefore have the same malady reveals woeful ignorance of biology and causality.
And – in the contexxt – really poor social skills,
Nevertheless, even boorish artists need work.
Since you enjoy digging so much, if you’re in the Bay Area, what’s your fee to get some unwanted blackeberry vines out of my back yard.
It is fine to pound it if you are female and older than Jane. I know that is hypocritical but I don’t fuckin care.
Probably because corporate media has decided who they want in the the.
general election…McCain v Oama. Any attack on Obama is framed, at some level, a racist. Obama and the Dems are getting sandbagged.
Ding ding! We have a winner.
Looseheadprop had a post up two down here tonight with some details, although much of it is pretty “inadmissable.”
Didn’t stop Ken Starr, of course.
Yeah. Whatever.
Yikes! She scares me!
Did you see TDS tonight? Do you know how “The Beard” always talks about “the best political team on TV” or some such nonsense? Stewart showed a clip of Hume saying Faux has the Best Poltiical team ever. CNN and Faux going over the edge. I better start buying popcorn.
Okay, now this is beautiful.
Are you spoiling for a fight?
Well, I won’t cause I loves ya.
Aww, c’mon no spoilers for us left coasters and beyond….
Who is investigating them? Is it the FEC? The Republicans screwing their own? Who would thought that???
Sorry. :-(
Please no TDS Spoilers for the Westies!
Obama is an Illinois Senator politics/crime is a joint GOP/Dem operation there, if you dig into Illinois you hurt Mayor Daley and you hurt Rep Rahm Emanuel.
Hilary needs Daley to win Chicago.
Who is investigating them? Is it the FEC?
No. The FBI!
“They have Glenn Beck as the main host, talking about how he’ll vote for Hillary instead of McCain.”
If they could stick to that kind of prattle, it would be OK. Problem is that they won’t.
Beck, along with Matthews and Dowd, have some interesting psych issues. But, I am no psychiatrist or psychologists, so I am not diagnosing anything. But, as a layman, they all have big issues, in the layman’s sense of the work.
I prefer them to Kristol, Brooks, Hewitt (or whoever the overbearing, rude, lying, pudgy Mitt-maniac is with the white hair and goofy little glasses.) The professional hacks are worse. They are sociopaths.
Normally I’m nuts for a readhead but, yeesh!
hee.hee.hee
I like Richmond. He didn’t mean anything by it.
I’m I understandig the assessment right that the bad fguys are goibng from Iraq to Pakistan? Is that right? I mean, it occurred to me that they were in Afghanistan/Pakistan to begin with. Some went to Iraq, I guess, after we liberated it. And now they’re going back to Pakistan. So we’re basically right back where we were after 9/11, except now we’re quagmired up to our necks in Iraq.
Hmmm… might have to watch to see if “The Beard” and “The Hume” can get into a mudfight this fall to prove just who is the best. Heh.
I haven’t watched TDS or TCR since the strike. I miss it dearly. Here’s hoping the strike ends soon (though I must say I’ve been enjoying Letterman, who just said “Mitt looks like the guy who has a crease in his jeans.” and “Hillary won American Samoa. It ends up, that’s where she’s hiding Bill.”
On that lovely joke, I’m outtie here. Time for bed. I hope everyone has a great night!
The Grey Lady has certainly gone greyer…
When I now read Dowd articles, I want to ask, “Who are you and what have you done with Maureen Dowd?”
Sleep well, Land!
Damn. I try to start somethin’ and ya go and make me blush.
Shoot… sorry about giving out a few of Letterman’s jokes from his monologue. I should’ve thought before I typed.
Confession: I think, if you look at certain pictures where the personalities don’t show through, both Dowd and Malkin are hot.
No, no, not Coulter, ever ever ever. Not that. NOOOO.
Aloha, LotF!
I think MoDo is still trying to matter. She has miscalculated her self-importance.
Or not.
Rabble rousing is important. Keep it up.
I know. I thought it was a fun exchange. I’ll tell you, though, after that exchange I’ve been pretty attuned to the “age thing” and that’s a good thing that I’m aware of that. It seemed I was missing something you found pretty dominant in this campaign. I’m paying more attention for it.

Kirk,
i was in touch with a psychiatrist about 25 years ago who had studied the literature on Van Gogh. he was intrigued by the possibility that Vincent’s instability was considerably increased by his exposure to the chemicals and lead that were contained in the paints he used, particularly the yellows. Any thoughts on that conceit?
Oy. Blackberry vines. I had the most beat-up old skunk saunter through my back yard for blackberries. Don’t know what ever happened to the old chap.
Confess to not having read all the comments, yet.
But, I got a huge rant from my best friend in CT when I stayed for xmas and NY.
“Modo is totally unprincipled. She contributes nothing of value. It’s all about her. etc. etc.”
Can’t say I disagree!
OT: I heard Nancy Pelosi on All Things Considered during my drive home. She used the work “bipartisan” three times, and each time I screamed: FUCK BIPARTISANSHIP!
But his brother eventually had the same problems.
Nancy Pelosi is a wanker.
Want my unvarnished opinion re: the hotness of those 2 ??
Never mind.
Then it was worth it.
Hope Richmond thinks so too.

Well, when you have Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, and Rush Limbaugh all saying they’re going to vote for Hillary Clinton, what have you really got? I think it’s a bunch of whack jobs who think they can keep from getting her elected. Or, a group who wants to get Obama as the dem candidate because they know they can tear him apart.
Hope Hillary gets the nod from us. Heaven help us with an unknown/untested Barack.
Modo used to be funny I agree but for the last few years it seems that she has been suffering from writers block.
She has always been catty, and vicious, sometimes she even had some real insight.
Now is she overworked, stressed out, unhappy I don’t know but I do know that she has been phoning her column in her writing lacks something.
Also her insight seems gone too?
Modo was at her best attacking Bush and attacking Bill for cheating on his wife.
I think that she needs to ask herself why she wants to write.
“They have Glenn Beck as the main host, talking about how he’ll vote for Hillary instead of McCain.”

I don’t like reading her. I was raised by the “do unto others” rule. Why say cruel things about people? Especially, made up sh*t.
especially to Jane Hamsher for being allowed to read, learn, and understand what is really going on everyday in our world.
uh? that last is not entirely clear…
That’s cause you’re both sweeties.
Bagel recipe for BFL
Modo is quite a good writer.
But I wish she would start using her power for good – instead of evil.
I’m suspiscious of Hillary’s supposed 5 million dollar loan to her campaign and her claim that her staffers are going without pay. I’m not buying it actually.
Dowd is Not Hot.
She’s an email friend with GHWB. Enough said.
This state MD and MM attractiveness comes in short fits. I can’t explain it. I’ll never mention it again. Hasn’t happened in awhile.
But… recently Brooks is kind of growing on me somehow. Something about his seeming cretfallen disappointment in the Republican conservative downfall, his earnest hope that they can reform themselves, and do good once more, all the while retaining the true inner goodness of movement and crony capitalist corporate conservativsm that will allow his bosses to rake in the dough and give it to him for hacking around.
The poor man looks so vulnerable! His professional hackness is being stretched thin and perhaps I am seeing true soul searching. That is absurd of course, he is professional hack.
But.. I just feel like he needs a hug. Now, THAT is distrubing. Need to lay off these pundit celebs for awhile. They are doing something weird to my brain.
Lemme see. Kerry. Purple heart. Repubs wouldn’t have any of that. McCain. POW. Nope, none of that either.
They really hate the troops. Why?
Dang, VG, you’re a cynical one, eh?
Hooking pinky fingers.
should have said.. for allowing me to read….sorry!
We have nothing to fear but fear itself.
Those idjits don’t have the sway they used to. They’ve been pumping the Tax Whisperer hard, yet Mittmo is going down bigtime. They can’t even influence their own choir anymore. Who cares what they say or are gonna do.
Obama/Edwards 08!
I’m not suspicious of it, but at the campaign’s burn rate, I’m unsure how far it will take them. She had eighteen million on hand for the primary on 1/1. If that’s gone now, her loan of five million will not last until the end of this month.
Unless, of course, Penn’s going without pay. But I really doubt that.
marshen! thanks for the clarification and for your gracious response! Most appreciated.
Thanks. I dunno what it is about the bagels here. they don’t boil them long enough? i dunno. but they’re too chewey and doughy. i’ll try it sometime. thanks again.

Amen! The RNC know they are so screwed… However, I truly hope our down tickets really benefit from the up surge with more and better Dems…
You probably do need to lay off. I did just that after NH. Didn’t watch coverage on TV for about a week. Only read headlines in the paper. no stories or articles. Might be heard for you to do. After the intensity of IA & NH, there was a bit of a lull until FL. Aren’t going to be any lulls now.

I really only know about Matthews. The technical lingo for what he suffers from is that he is a goof.
Speaking of which. I hadn’t been watching all that much MSNBC and was surprised to see Tucker last night. I didn’t know he was with the first string. And I have no idea why.
I think it goes beyond that, Tweety has some serious manliness issues too… ;-)
I believe the proper term is goofus maximus.
How is everyone tonight?
Marshen, kudos on your successful walk through fire ;)
If Tucker were on a football team, he’d be the guy who runs onto the field and retrieves the kicking tee.
He was in Siberia last night.
MoDo had some good years but she’s looking at life through a rearview mirror now. she sounds like she is seriously embittered. where there was some graceful irony there is now a kind of deadening cynicism. her barbs and slashes have no humor and most of her use of the language is now strained and uninspired. MoDo has lost her mojo.
Bon soir, ma cherie. There is an accent aigu over the first e of cherie which I don’t know how to do in wordpress.

The 50 State Strategy has had another two years to work its magic. I gotta think the Blue Wave is gonna be massive this Nov, but don’t want to get complacent however.
Look at Obama’s staggering vote totals yesterday in states that hardly had Dem turnout at all in recent elections. Idaho fer chissakes! These are places that former DNC head, and current Clinton campaign manager Terry McAuliffe explicitly ignored, and even pulled DNC resources out of completely in some cases. His supposed strategy was to raise money from BigMoney mostly, and put resources only in states with high delegate counts. He was vocal about this. I think this explains yesterday’s results more than anything, where the Clinton connections and favors run deep (CA, NY, NJ, MA, worried about OH and Penn for this reason as well).
The idea of Terry McAuliffe anywhere near the White House is repulsive to me.
Can’t ya just smell the Aqua-velva…? *g*
I think this is worth some

That’s Cheney, isn’t it?
nope. no trick question. The answer is that Romney knows nothing.
I’m fine but tired. I’m going to put my old McGovern t-shirt on and maybe make up a Clinton/Obama bumper sticker for my car, just to while away the time until the Ohio primary.
These are both really interesting observations. IIRC, one aspect of the question about pigment toxicity related to Van Gogh’s apparent perception of visual distortions (”haloes”, I think) – the specific form of distrotuon being a hallmark of heavy metal toxicity.
Also – IIRC – VanGogh’s “progression” (cruel medical jargon to describe increased suffering) of symptoms was suggestive of bipolar disorder in which the symptoms ultimately included psychotic symptoms.
If the above is true (if my neurons are working) the above describes a tragic intersection between inherited biology (genetics) and individual biology (the sum of post-birth “nurture”). Bipolar disorder (BAD) is heavily (but not wholly) determined by geentics: ther greater the numbeer of first-degree relatives with mood disorder (depression or BAD) one has, the greater one’s risk of developing BAD. A whole range of neurotoxins (alcohol, amphetamines, etc) increase the severity of whatever intrinsic BAD symptoms a patient may already endure.
So here we – and Vincent – may literally be seeing the sum total of nature and nurture on Van Gogh’s brain.
Side note: We – and all the other primates – evolved on a planet almost wholly devoid of “raw” heavy metals in surface deposits (save for “nuggets” of the shiny metals we call precious. They are “shiny” beacuse they are relatively non-reactive, so until fire came along we had no chance for exposure.
WhoTF cares? Well, we didn’t evolve any capacity to resist most heavy toxicity – just as we ddin’t evolve compensation for sudden gravity failures.
MOst (not all) heavy meatls weren’t even available in pure form until a few centuries ago. Most of the 600,000 or so synthetic chemicals (almost all untested) coursing through the biosphere – and us – didn’t even exist before WWII.
So what? Well, our brains aren’t used to all this shit. One of the most interesting recent examples – and reasons for hope – came from a Briritsh study in which adolescent (male, IIRC) inmates with severe histories were given diets with very little to no processed food/synthetic chemicals.
What were previously thought to be severe criminal behaviors dwindled as the toxic diet was replaced by real food (and carefully chosen nutritional substances, if I recall).
Seems as though Vincent was not the last tortured soul who may have suffered from “Better Living Through Chemistry”.
Food and health and hope.
Bon Appetit!

I don’t want to alwaysa keep bringing the discussion back to the giants (and my prediction-right here – that they’d win), but……
Michael Strahan addressed the Patriots at NY City hall yesterday. He said “You know what we did to you? We. Stomp. You. I remember this song but forgot the title. (Duh.) Thanks!
Hey Richmond. How ya doin’? Was goofin’ arouind w/ jane about that “old bag” stuff from this morning. See her 65 & 85.
I think Modo believes that, to be taken seriously, she has to be somewhat even-handed in her cattiness. But doesn’t she know that most republicans have a serious irony deficiency? I always wonder why she doesn’t just play to her natural audience.
I’m reading back through the comments. The Threat Assessment says that about 100 have left Iraq to go elsewhere so it isn’t really significant. It obsesses about Iran and even talks about Iranian actions in Afghanistan for example. That Pakistani tribal areas are major staging areas for the Taleban and dwarf Iranian involvement goes unmentioned.
Venezuela gets as much space as China. Cyber surveillance is breifly mentioned but no mention of increased spying on us in the internet this would entail.
The Saudi entry is short. It is praised for dealing effectively with al Qaeda there and then incongruously a brief mention is made that most of the suicide bombers in Iraq are Saudis and the KSA continues to finance terrorism around the world. If Iran were doing this, McConnell would probably use it to declare war on them.
The whole document is like that.
We. Stomp. Them. OUT!!!!!!!!

I think the diet thing is totally right on. When I first met my husband, he was always getting sick with every bug floating around, not to mention allergies. Once I got him off fast-food, which was all he ever ate, and on to home cooking, well he hardly ever gets sick any more.
He is that, but I wonder if he spoke too soon.
Whichever potential nominee gives in is going to be pounded by their folk.
I agree. It’s sorta like that bipartisan crap people are always harping on here. (See e.g. wangdangdodle @ 153). Why do any of “our” people feel that need to be even-handed? Their people aren’t. It’s not a two way street and our sidec gets screwed.
I don’t know.
I’m quite worried about his plan to close two psych hospitals, where some very sick people are sent. Budget crunch, and Ohio constitution mandates a balanced budget.
I’m getting a feeling that he’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

OMG! I just googled koro.
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
Oh lady, i don’t need this right now, ya know? Ya know the kind of enmotional roller coaster I’ve been on? Huh? I got a bloody eyeball, ya know. I think it’s from when the Giants got called for 12 men on tne field on a New England punt and my head exploded.
Although some say the quickest way is straight through the sternum. ;)
~~~ModNote: Let’s keep our imaginations out of this area, please. Thank you.~~~
When we have a Democratic White House, a Democratic House and 60 Democratic votes in the Senate (not counting LIEberman) then we can show them what “bipartisanship” is. Bipartisan this!
Dick Chaney: We. Stomp. You. OUT!!!!
Thanks for that. I’ll have to start paying more attention there.
oh jeez, i don’t mean to laugh at any one truely afflicted. Only laughing in regards to Cheney…
Agreed. Hate bipartisan crap. Just as our side is singing kumbaya and reaching for the stars, they’ll be picking our pockets and tying our shoelaces together.
Some of the personal stuff in MoDo’s “Bush World” column collection was undoubtedly revealing news at the time. She probably didn’t endear herself to the then-new administration. I rarely read her, she bores me.
OTOH, for some perverse reason, Tweety is a source of endless fascination to me..
first, my name is Suzanne, bfl, and i am speaking to you as moderator of firedoglake, not as some ‘lady’ who should subjugate herself and her duties to your needs because you have had a bad day
exactly. more of the same shit with the seante stimulus situation, right? cloture vote failed. so, as jane and greenwald (i think) and others have been sayin’, let them stand up and filibuster
Alice Waters on Charlie Rose now…
well, in that case, i honestly don’t know what you’re talking about ’cause i haven’t said anything mod-worthy.
CNN?
and i’ve been having great days since sunday night. hope it continues.
G’d evening all.
PBS
Aloha, eCAHN! Hectic day?
PBS. Going to watch in the garage before the furniture starts flying.
Merle Haggard is a Hillary supporter, he was on 60minutes recently talking about how much he liked her and it would be good to have a woman be the next President. He even wrote a song about her.
Just some errands stuff. Came up to the country this evening & am getting settled in, warming up house. Bought a mobile stand for my laptop (minor assembly required) so that I don’t need to sit with my back to the TV. It doesn’t take much to amuse me.
This is what we need to do to Rethugs. Everywhere:
I’m a lot less impressed with your complaints about Obama, after you published that crappy insinuation filled hit on Obama and Rezko.
In particular, the author of that story implies that something underhanded can be read from Obama’s employment in the Miner law firm. The author asks why a Harvard Review member would need to work for a “sleazy” firm like that when he could have worked for a “white shoe” firm – oh boy, some terrible scandal must lurk there. But twenty seconds research shows us that Miner is a highly respected lawyer for progressive causes in Chicago who was corporation counsel when Harold Washington was mayor and his law firm is well known for its pro-bono work on civil rights. So unless we consider working in a firm known for pro-bono civil rights work to be morally inferior to being a high paid corporate lawyer for the biggest companies, we have to conclude that what is suspicious is the quality of information in this story.
At this point I find Tweety more interesting too – as much as I dislike him. It’s hard to know exactly what makes him tick. Last night I think I saw him tearing up after the Obama speech – (ATTENTION HUFFINGTON POST.)
Shouls have been “complaints against Dowd”
So only one FISA amendment was voted on today, Cardin’s amendment to shorten the sunset from 6 yrs to 4… which failed…
CTuttle, I’m sorry to hear of your son’s burden – I hope he good access to good care and may live symptom free.
And the 600,000 untested chemicals really are scary.
That’s why the precautionary principle is so important. Right now, Big Test Tube cynically perverts our innate sense of fairness by procalimig their chemicals have “rights” – can’t be locked up in the lab until proven guilty.
Fuck that noise – we human beings and the living world have rights – their precious molecules are just lab spawn.
The PP restores our rights; the PP essentially mandates that no new technology (includiing chemicals) may be let loose upon our sorry planet until the fucker is proven not to be free of known risks.
Right now Big Test Tube protects their products – and profits – with a firewall of human flesh. Right now – in the US – Big Test Tube demands the “Body Count” method of proving risks: we sicken and die (for decades) – and then we have to convinve the Lords of the Labs that our deaths really are due to their toxic crap du tube.
The EU has already made the PP the basis for their chemical regualtions (as we heard from Mark Schapiro when he discussed his excellent book Exposed in Book Salon here.)
I introduced the PP when I was part of a team pushing the LAUSD – the nation’s largest single school district – to come up with safe pest control policies in 1998. The resultant policy – adopted in 1999 – made selctinig the safest agents very easy. We didn’t have to play “study war” or “molecule war” – we just identified the unaccepatble risks (cancer, learning disability, reproductive problems, endocrine disruption, etc) and that forced the whole process to choosee the least toxic alternatives.
Suddenly, cleaning the grease off the kitchen equipment is better than regularly spraying neurotoxins for bugs. Suddenly, “weeds” are less of a problem then lymphma from RoundUp….
If Hillary or Obama had the gonads to really protect children (and the rest of us), they’d be falling over each other to be the first major Prez candidate to declare they’d implement the PP by executive order in the first ten days in office.
Who knows – in a race this tight, maybe one of the two ambitious pols will finally figure moms have more votes – and (collectively) more campaign money than
Hope Darkblack sees that comment – OMG.
Hugh, thank you.
For almost two years, senior leaders of the IC have testified
in both open and closed hearings about the critical role of
private parties in ensuring our citizens are safe, and the need to
provide liability protection to those who provided assistance
after the attacks of September 11. If we are not able to address
this issue, I believe it will severely degrade the capabilities of
our Intelligence Community to carry out its core missions of
providing warning and protecting the country.
Hugh,
Does this mean what I think it means-spying on us by telecoms-should I go off or hold my mud?
I am behind in the comments, so sorry if it is out of context, but I am going to read that whole thing tomorrow just had to ask about that first paragraph..I am with you on the; we are so f69ked.
Hey Suz-
gotta say too that when someone talks about an xx as a “lady”, it er, sounds kinda old-fashioned to me, or worse. I mean, I much prefer “this woman said” to “this lady said”, cause “lady” does seem to have a certain je ne sais quois of cluelessness, in this year of 2008.
Dayam, Doc, what a simple concept (PP)… What a travesty…
Did you get my email this morn?
Go back to this morning’s threads and you will see that, in fact, Jane was the first one to use the term “old bag.” You gonna call her out on it? Didn’t think so. I don’t know how you can say my reference to her use of that term was “much different” that they way it was used this morning – other than the fact that Jane used it this a.m. and I repeated it here. I sinply referred to that discussion between jane & richmond. ’snot a big deal. I’m droppin’ it.
Look, if anybody misunderstood or misconstrued my #157, as apparently our mod did, and was in any way offended or demeaned, i apologize.
Kirk, did you get the link I left you the other night re: designed food and labeling regs?
How about the U.S. House of Reps, who refers to female members as gentleladies? How bizarre is that?
sigh
Thanks for the headsup! I only caught the last 12 minutes or so but will follow up on her Edible Schoolyard (or was it CClassroom?) program, and find her book – The Art of Simple Food.
I have the same problem re: lady. Used to give older southern men a pass on that, but they’re all gone. Basic rule: if you wouldn’t use the term gentleman in the same context, lady isn’t the right choice.
Sexism disguised as chivalry is offensive. This from a woman who had a whole damned dining room of men at a previously all-male club stand until she was seated for lunch.
Great post Kirk. I started paying attention to chemicals in the 70’s when my kids were young, especially in the food we consume… you can’t be too careful with all these chemicals. That is one reason for the most part I cook all of food with ingredients I can some what trust… Wish there was more access to natural foods… you can find them but not very conviently.
BFL, I think the best thing I can say at the moment is…..stop digging.
Thanks for that Kirk, I have a son, not by blood, my ex married a guy who was not a nice man, and although she had had her tubes tied (sorry I don’t know the terminology) she had a baby boy and the man split. Since we were friends she moved into my house for a while with Jonah when he was about three and I have been dad ever since. She is about to move back into my house because Jonah has ADHD and probably other peripheral symptoms, and it would be better with a man around too. A week ago he completely lost it at school and Penelope had to take him to the hospital. He is such a beautiful child and it breaks my heart. I write this not to complain but to thank you for the information, I am going to have to train myself to deal with this and need all the information I can get.
Sunny, I missed it – I am sorry. If you could (re)send a linky, I’d be grateful.
_ _ _
BFL, you don’t even have the stones to say you made a mistake – and kept repeating it. The problem is not that I have misunderstood your sexist comment- the problem is not with my (or Suzanne’s response).
The problem is with the prejudiced, sexist, homophobic comments you continue to spew into the community here.
Tonight you’ve admitted you were trying to start a conflict. Last week you reported you did not vote – and you were apparently ignorant of the single statewide initiative on the FL ballot – the one that helps the Grover Norquist crwod defund public services.
BFL, the problem I see is understanding the motives a commenter who comes to a very progressive political blog, boasts of lack of participation in politics, and goes out of his way to find ways to insult the main poster (or mod) of the moment by chooisng terms derogatory to said poster/mods’ gender, sexual orientation, or age.
That’s not a problem with the receiver(s) – that problem resides with the sender.
That problem resides with you.
I will not comment again on this matter, or you. I comment now to state that I wish to have nothing to do with the slurs you keep slinging here – and silence would be assent.
The solution is for our mods to determine – unlike you, I respect them and their work.
SunnyN- thanks for that! I know- and I liked your phrase “sexism disguised as chivalry is offensive”. Exactly.
(((Maddy)))
(((Penelope)))
(((Jonah)))
and nahant, you describe the safest way I know to choose and prepare food. I wish natural food outlets were as common as supermarkets…amny rrual folk I know mail order bulk organic staples ’cause of lack of access to (affordable) safe foods.
Wehn I think of the subsidies for toxic crap food, that’s just so…wrong.
Can I still have my coffee ice cream (((((((((((((g))))))))))))))))))
Kirk.. I agree BFL reminds me of the atypical New Yorker you read and hear about. Loud mouthed and feels they are always right,,, distinct lack of true class and has no respect for the ladies (I mean that in classiest use of the word) nuff said except he is of the type whom I make sure have no part in my life! Karma will bite him in the ass someday!
thank you but let’s close that subject, folks
Kirk, interesting site – trade sponsored publication for the “designed food” industry. My earlier post of it was epu’d, no surprise you missed it.
oooh – what a fascinating site, Sunny. Tahnk you. (and Thank you!)
The caption for the accompanying photo could very well be, “All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” MoDo is Norma Desmond.
How do you like “the same dysfunction and chaos (eg. the Clintons) that fueled the Republican hate machine” as an account of the 90’s battles! The woman is sick in the head.
“If Obama has a closet full of skeletons, as the Clinton campaign keeps suggesting…”
Please cite where the Clinton campaign keeps suggesting that Obama has skeletons in his closet.
