Five Years ago, February 5, 2003 — a date which will live in wankery — The United States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by loathsome and venal forces of empire of the PNAC.
It was on that day that Colin Powell decided to spend all of his credibility to sell George Bush’s War. The war John McLovin’ wants to last 100 years. A war that costs us more than $100 billion every year "off budget" (and probably about $2 trillion so far and counting down the road even if it ended tomorrow) and thousands more dead this year.
I don’t know about you, but I have not even gotten a f***ing t-shirt! Meanwhile, a lot of fine and brave young men and women (and some not so young) of the United States Military have gotten beautiful funerals and prosthetic limbs. A lot of Iraqis, some brave, some not, have gotten even less.
But George Bush got himself reelected by starting an unwise war, planning it badly, and then using it as an issue to accuse everyone else but he and his sycophants of being cowardly defeatists as we march onward toward the ever undefined, ever more elusive, "Victory".
Damn, how flippin’ awesome!
Ah, but the memories (most memories not eligible for treatment for you Veterans).
1. The Power Point presentation of the world’s most dangerous "biochemical weapon labs" that turned out to be used to inflate balloons.
2. Powell holding up a vial of what he purported to be ANTHRAX (remember that stuff — and how it was used to sell the war?). In actuality, it must have contained crack.
3. The reaction of our brave, brave Democratic candidates, except Howard Dean. Note the especially wankerous Joe Lieberman’s reaction.
I joined with Senators John McCain, Bob Kerrey, Trent Lott, and others to introduce the Iraqi Liberation Act, which made clear that containment of Saddam Hussein was no longer enough to protect America’s security or world security. Instead, it said, we needed to assist the Iraqis in changing their regime and ending Saddam Hussein’s brutal rule. That bill passed. It has been the law of our land for five years now.
Yes, some people have a dream, like Dr. King but Joe Lieberman dreams the dream of the eternal war that he helps create so that others can fulfill his dream with their death and dismemberment. Thank you so effing much. Let’s give him a Medal of Freedom already!
So what are your memories of this "special day" in American history? And will there be gifts?

Hey…
zed. a good man gone bad or a bad man emerging behind the facade of good? American tragedy or sameold. any thoughts?
Good Morning!
Anyone else notice how little is heard from The esteemed Colin Powell. Especially considering how he was the toast of the town back then.
No. He did not get “re-elected” he was not elected the first time and was not elected the second time. The fuck**s stole the election with the assistance of the supreme court, they sold us the illegal invasion and then stole the second election with the help of Blackwell et al in Ohio.
It is hard to speak with one’s head up ones ass.
I read somewhere that he was the guy trying to cover up My Lai back in the day. Answers the question posed by Bluestate.
Poor Colin.
It was his “Adlai Moment“.
Not.
Not…*g*
You lie down with dogs, you wake up with toast crumbs in your sheets.
He was never a good man. Yet another myth. he covered up the My Lai massacre.
Why would he ever show his face again?
It was not just Powell that failed us, it was every Senator that voted for the war resolution.
The “Powell Doctrine” = use of overwhelming force.
Oh that’s nice. That how the disgusting police behave at peaceful demonstrations.
The man is disgusting a he betrayed his race.
No, he betrayed the HUMAN race.
Powell, the “good” soldier “who only followed orders” – he sold the American people down the river and ended his career in disgrace.
Maybe some day he’ll fess-up and tell us what motivated him to bring us an unnecessary war that has wrecked our military, robbed the National Treasury and broken our hearts.
Joe-Lie…a joke…
Colin…sucker, used by the BushCo and the neocon cabal…
amen!
just as Hillary can do more than just agitate for women, btw
Yes, Colin betrayed everyone…including himself, as he now realizes…
Hill on the Today Show. Now Obama…
that clinton woman will nothing but try and enhance her cash reserves and her power. Not a good person at all.
Obama: “Today will not be decisive…” duh…
Lieberman is driven by his religious agenda. He sees himself as the protector of Israel, first.
He’s a fundi like the rest of them and religion rules everything they do.
Powell and Blair
Names that will live in derisive fame who were used and abused by the world’s most powerful 10 year old. Pathetic.
He realized it when he did it. He made a pact with the white guys to do their bidding when he went to West Point.
US military attacks people of color. But they won’t admit it.
Matt Lauer with that “home state” business again for Hill…meaning NY. Yuk…
Just wondering.
Powell has always struck me as the one person from the Bush cabal most likely to finally have an attack of conscience and go public with chapter and verse, both of the deceptions in which he was involved and those which he observed first-hand. I realize that his role in the My Lai coverup argues strongly against that, but we always can hold out hope…
that may or may not be the case, my point being that a woman isn’t restricted to women’s causes
I remember being so surprised that the man suddenly adopted the “party line” and went about selling it for all he was worth! And his stock, in my view, just plummeted! What, I wondered at the time, did they do or say to twist his arm? It was so sudden. Such a huge turn-around. And such a mistake!
Colin Powell–the losing member of a losing team.
Hillary is not intellectually honest and so I don’t care for her as executive.
Let her use her power in other ways. Women, children and whatever else she cares about.
Good morning Attaturk and the pups,
To thank this crew plan ahead to boycott any spending on 3/19, the start of these boys glorious adventure.
Also wear an armband with the # 5 or the # 6 crossed out . Show where you stand. Peace now damn it!
Aha. True.
I don’t think a lot of Americans realize this fact/part of his life…
Jim, he has cultivated such a false image and very much aided by the MSM and especially the Rs who are dying to find blacks to show that they aren’t racists.
He was nothing but a sell out [edited by mod] for his entire trajectory. But he knows it and doesn’t have the courage or the honesty to admit what a sell out he was to himself, his race, his country and the world.
How he looks in the mirror is amazing.
[Mod Note; Please find a different, less offensive term for the thoughts you are trying to convey.]
dam sander in a bad mood today?
Speaking of Howard Dean, I seem to recall that he had a few questions round about this time as Gephardt and Lieberman were enabling the Bush-Cheney rush to a unilateral war of choice (audio here):
Pause as the auditorium erupts in pent-up frustration and agreement.
He wasn’t able to stop the war or win the presidency, but by the time Howard was done speaking, he had made it impossible for any of the war mongers to win the Democratic nomination for president in 2004. If that was the only thing he’d done, it would still be enough to earn him my respect.
I didn’t.
LOL! Last thread too… Sander is a dam?
Back from voting. What a farce. In this high income neighborhood on the East Side of Manhattan, voting is surely the stepchild of democracy, enough to turn off most anyone. The old lever machine for my district was broken. That’s 1/4 of the machines for the four districts voting in that location. Two poll workers were talking where voters would cue up, thus blocking the process. It took another poll worker about 2 minutes to find my name in the alphabetical listing so I could sign in (it looked liked she turned every page in the Bs before getting to the Cs, then somehow went to far in the Cs and had to page back). The paper ballot on top of the pile had a large rip in it, so I asked for one that wasn’t torn. After filling out the bubble, it was folded and put in a cardboard box with a slot on top. How secure is that? And can an optical scanner read a paper ballot that has been folded? I have my doubts.
LHP sez that NYS wants the best voting system. I guess she has never visited my district.
Answering a question of yours from yesterday. Many people were having huge problems at TPM. (still today the system logs you out at times even if you appear to be logged in… save anything you want to post… or it may become a victim of karma)
lol, my spelling/grammar matches sanders mood ;)
Thanks for digging this one up. Too bad Dean had to scream that night…
attaturk, I think we can do something here
colon Powell is supremely embarrassed, his spouse is supremely disappointed, his children, the children of his children will have to live with his shame
I think we need to get posts like this one over to him and I think we need to make them even more succinct
Powell still has the power to get these criminals thrown in jail, he still can reclaim some of his integrity
he can still voluntarily appear before congress, by surprise, by secret council so there won’t be time to declare states secrets
and even if state secrets are declared, he needs to make testimony in spite of it
we CAN bring these criminals to the bar of justice, all it will take is for colon Powell to realize he can still be a patriot
if he does not, he will be regarded as a traitor to this country and her constitution
that can be the lead or something similar to a host of blogs;
“colon Powell, a traitor to this country and her constitution”
we can site the references from his chief of staff, from his wife, from his own statements
we can demonstrate he HAD to know his testimony was a lie
he even said so, he even told us why he didn’t present those “aluminum tubes of mass destruction”, he said “it was the weakest part of the pitch”
then he goes in front of the world and uses his reputation for integrity to demonstrate data he knows as a fact is weak
Thanks for the memories…..♪♪♪
Yes, that is the problem, isn’t it? I think that is where I was coming from in my earlier point. Any normal person would be so haunted by both of his atrocious acts that some sort of public contrition would be necessary. That he doesn’t speaks volumes, but optimist that I am, I will give him some time after Bush is out of office to come out before I give up all hope on his humanity.
Thanks. I eventually got on without rebooting. Seems to be OK for me today.
We need a lot of that!
Damn that is awfully sad. That we cannot get an efficient, universally acceptable and secure voting system in this country is only the result of a lack of will.
Main site better. Cafe still a problem. Glad you’re doing ok there.
My own neighborhood in Minneapolis, the Warehouse District loft area, is yuppified and somewhat artsy, so I suspect Obama will carry the neighborhood caucus. I suspect the Upper East Side will be split between Hill and Obama…
“political will”
Morning Attaturk ‘n pups,
tjbs: been not spending for a while. bluejeansntshirt is not just my pseudonym but my one man movement. wear em every day to show em who we are.
all are welcome to join (no membership fees). no logos allowed on the tshirt though. turn the tshirt inside out if it has a logo. it’s cooler that way. peace now, double damn it!
You got it. Voting technology is not rocket science.
Speaking of which: nostalgia story from early childhood. We lived across the street from a small triangular shaped park. The voting booth, a life-size Monopoly-style building, was brought in & placed there a day or two before voting day. When I was very young, the trailer with the booth on it was still pulled by horses.
Problems in the toobz.
My 45 was in response to SanderO @ 35.
does anyone think edwards would take the vp spot?
does anyone think hillary will?
of both will accept, who gets the nod?
I don’t think hillary is the women getter she is supposed to be, I think edwards and oboma is a better ticket for getting votes
Yep that is what I meant. My excuse? I have been shoveling snow and I fuc**ng hate it.
No stationary signs anywhere nearby. There were two young forlorn looking people holding Obama signs.
I have been enjoying spring weather for the better part of this winter here in lawn guy land new york
lol! understand completely, living in the snowbelt.
BTW, all the D candidates were still on the NYS ballot.
Iirc, there was a very poor sound system which distorted his voice and made it sound worse.
:(
Yes,and I hope he will
Oh gosh I hope not. Can you imagine bigbill as semi first man?
If wither of them are sincere about helping their country and they believe that they can ensure a victory as VP and that they can have a bog voice in the executive, a al Cheney, then they should take the offer of VP if it is made. Act like a grown up and not a grown ego.
And let me add that putting the word “vice” anywhere near bigbill would not be a goodidea.
Fixed it for you.
Before My Lai there was the Tet Offensive. This is the 40th anniversary of North Viet Nam’s drive to destabilize and seize control of the South Vietnamese government. I don’t know where Colin Powell was in early 1968 but I remember a Viet Cong guerrilla whose body lay in the middle of an intersection in the Cholon district of Saigon for days. Charlie was shooting up the whole place and no one was willing to get shot by a sniper to remove the body. It was a time when if you saw the sun come up it meant you had survived another day. I still sleep better during the day than at night.
At one time Colin Powell was the most respected African-American in the country. Now? I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.
I don’t think Hillary would be asked in the first place, and I don’t think she should. She’s secure in her leading role in the Senate anyway.
I’m there! I gotta go with the baggy khakis tho.
Good thread, Ataturk.
That little shot of Powell, should have a caption:
“Folk, I have here in my hand an exquisite concoction of Dr. bush’s hair-grower and orgasm-enhancer. If I told you the secret ingredients, I’d have to kill you, but, I’m such an honest snake-oil-and-body-parts-salesman, that I’m going to ‘fess up and tell you that me’n the chefs at Langley, Virginia labored long and hard to get just the right mix of koolaid and bullshit, so that we could save the universe (not to mention, Halliburton and Bechtel, with Blackwater bringing up the rear…) and make available to you good, peace-loving, ‘murkans, this remedy.
Y’all step right up and get in line. No pushing and shoving, I’ve got plenty for all of you.”
But, firecurs, I’ve got to tell you, if Sen. Clinton pulls out a win today, you better enjoy reading Ataturk’s good thoughts piece on this, because if we’re brain-dead enough to nominate her, in the general, you won’t be seeing or hearing a FUCKING word of it, from the Clinton camp.
I beleive one of the very first things the next president should do is demote the office back to doing press conferances and funerals
You’re right… might have been obvious to people in the room. But a lot of people who saw the video didn’t know that. Perception is all…
I would save Edwards for A.G. what a rat terrier, what a wealth of idiots to go after.
Q: What is so rare as a day in June?
A: A plain white T-shirt with nothing written on it.
I think whoever is pres next better pick a good VP cause impeachment will on the R agenda.
And where are the questions to the two candidates we have been given about rolling back the unconstitutional “powers” that bushco has usurped?
Ah ah. The setting for most of the scenes of Marguerite Duras’s L’Amant (The Lover)…both novel and film.
Perhaps, but a sharing of power may not be a bad thing either.
The executive a la Bush had way too much power and that was after the others who grabbed too much.
Good morning firedogs.
OT: Good news this morning.
Going up to read.
OK. but only if they come in blue. ;o)
Attaturk…
man, you are right about that
I think if Hillary wins she will have inoculated herself if she had Obama as VP because the repubs couldn’t stand putting a black man in office
and if Obama wins then the same thing would be true, they couldn’t stand the idea of putting either a women or THAT women in office
on thing great this president actually did;
he made it possible for a women and a black man to actually be elected to the office, he has enraged so many people, they will over come their misogyny and there bigotry
Nomolos@63: I think Edwards would consider the VP spot from Obama. I hope not, from Hillary.
I’d rather see him as A.G. That would be a natural, to me. :o)
But I don’t understand why he didn’t endorse Obama yesterday, when it would have counted most. And when it would have been most valuable, for him.
And I don’t understand why he hasn’t, at the least, put a stop to all this write-in nonsense. The reasoning of, seemingly, a LOT of frustrated Edwards supporters, is “Let’s pad John’s delegate count for the convention”
It’s crazy. If Clinton wins a clear victory today, she can waltz into Denver and wipe her ass with Edwards’ little delegate stash.
Edwards NOT endorsing Obama was a huge plus for her. Same thing with Gore. They had a chance to pick the next president, now they may wind up rubber-stamping another cliff-hanging defeatsnatch.
No sense to it.
As a veteran, the memory of Powell’s performance causes extreme anger whenever I think of it. I can play still play back the visual in my mind. It marks the day that he betrayed everything his uniform and his military service ever stood for. Most of all, he betrayed hundreds of thousands of men and women in uniform – past, present and futurNot to mention the rest of this country’s citizens.
Powell deserves nothing but contempt for the rest of his life. [edited by mod]
[Mod Note; In the comments here at FDL, please do not suggest actions violence or harm on anyone, including public officials. Thank you.]
We’d skirt Cholon on our way to the Phu Tho Race Track to wait for the ARVN to sweep the road before we hauled ass through the Delta.
good points all around.
And the bitch is, I bought it becuase I trusted someone who had seen the waste in the Nam. I’ll never fucking learn.
Peace symbols are OK. wow starting a movement is tougher than i realized.
A plain red, white or blue (my fave) t-shirt would look great in big numbers.
I’m with you on the first paragraph, but not the second.
If Powell had an ounce of self-respect remaining, he’d call out the Bush Administration for the manipulative, arrogant, and (insert additional perjorative adjectives here) folks that they are. He’d be on the Sunday talk shows, on the radio, writing op-eds, and maybe even appearing on various blogs.
If he had an ounce of self-respect remaining, he’d spend it trying to make up for the damage he helped BushCo inflict. Instead . . .
*crickets*
For me, as you know, it’s a black turtleneck & blue jeans.
I read somewhere that Edwards said he would not take that slot again.
I’m hoping he’s in charge of fighting insurance companies for Health Care!
how about just no logos. We’ll never agree on anything else :)
Whatever made you think he had an ounce of self-respect to begin with?
And for whoever said his ignominy is on his children & grandchildren, I might remind that at least one of his children is trying hard to outdo his father.
BTW, it was my army major efriend who initially put me onto Powell’s My Lai coverup. There are plenty in the army for whom Powell is anathema.
Good morning pups! Excited about Super Tuesday! Only registered a few days ago, have to find out where to vote.
Will your vote count more where you moved to than where you left? You could have voted absentee in your old location, n’est pas?
If a bullfrog had wings he wouldn’t bump his ass when he hopped.
You’re so hip, (wo)man. And, I mean that in a nice way.
ps – the 14 year old is not happy about getting up at 6, ’cause we gotta leave early to go, you know…vote!
He’ll get over it. I’ll stop and get him some take-out breakfast.
Woo Hoo. I always get excited about this ritual.
I’ll be in the plain white tshirt.
yesterday Hartmann had spokes persons on for H and O. Evan Bayh for Hill and Kerry for Obama. Says a lot to me.
Zogby on C-SPAN. Ron Paul supporter sez he’ll vote D if Ron Paul is not on the ticket on account of war. Zogby sez he hears that a lot.
Welcome to California.
Here’s a link: http://web.info.com/infocom.us…..kw=Polling
Day One: note to self ease up on the uniform requirements.
LOL. First (and last?) time anyone called my hip. I’ll cherish it.
That really was a great speech
You may have to reregister as a R if you want people to wear uniforms.
But you ARE. I’ll remind you from time to time.
The least I can do, for all You do.
lol, yeah, that is what i like about being in a dis-organized political party.
If you had a peace sign on your vehicle on a miltary post during Vietnam you would get and Article 15 (Captains Mast for the Dragon).
Watch the Joker and the peace sign “It’s the Jungian thing”.
What do the three little boxes mean, and how do you do that?
I was picking up on Pastfedup’s hypothetical, not necessarily making that contention on my own.
Powell’s supporters may contend that his current silence is done out of respect and loyalty to the President he served as Sec of State. I disagree — or at least I hope they are wrong. If Powell’s silence is anything but shame and humiliation, that’s yet another indication that his self-respect is sorely lacking.
they showed up as peace signs for me, guess it depends on the font in your browser?
They mean whatever was stuck in there won’t display, Mac thing maybe?
Nobody had to pressure Colin Powell into making a mistake of that
magnitude. He came to believe the press adulation of him as warrior
hero rex and that hubris led him into insubordination under Clinton
and partisan hackery under Junya. He was a mere mortal after all,
boy scout uniform notwithstanding.
What a great clip. I’ve never seen that movie. Thanks.
Yeah you have to have the required font installed.
I disagree. I think Powell was always a straight up brown-noser, plain & simple. See the last sentence in my 93. Apparently there have been plenty in the army that dislike (or hate?) him, and he must be aware of that and doesn’t care in a cold-blooded way.
Who could have anticipated . . .
I’m shocked! Shocked, I tell you!
What’s next? The sun going down in the west?
you just can see the signs in front of you ;)
No. He did NOT hold up a vial of anthrax. The very idea that he would is ridiculous and his claiming it was anthrax was a bald-faced lie. Such an item would not simply be held up in such a venue with bare hands sans a bunch of other protective gear. Simply not done. Powell was, and is a liar. Any time someone tries that trick in the future (”This is a vial of anthrax!”) you can damn well assume it to be lie (unless the person is a terrorist making a threat and not too concerned about dying).
Just saying.
Anyone at the UN with even a modicum of bio-lab knowledge would have known that the vial did NOT contain anything dangerous at all. It was a prop to decorate a big lie.
Powell is scum.
That scene is me with my R neighbors. still lmao ;o)
Yes, I was posing a complete hypothetical. I don’t really believe he has any self-respect. I also think that he does not have the guts to ever speak up and go on the record with the truth.
It’s great. Krubick wouldn’t leave England so the picked the Battle of Hue to have an urban setting. Half the film is Marine Boot Camp and the other in Vietnam. Michael Herr, the author of “Dispatches” wrote the srceenplay.
I have a Mac. It’s “unicode” and allows for all sorts of symbols or whatever. Didn’t realize that it won’t show up for everyone.
Keep your head till this peace thing blows over.
I work cross-platform and sometimes my mac’s does the crazziest things!
I have a simple HP with windows & explorer & they showed up as peace symbols for me. I was jealous. I don’t know how to do symbols.
lookin up fonts in online help. damn, simple peace buttons are so much easier.
Powell, a modern day Smedley Butler……… not!!!
When Powell made his presentation, I recalled Kennedy and Cuban Nukes Crisis. Why would an American not believe our leaders? I trusted this man and like the rest of the corporate aristocracy, they shoved it right up our derrières, in the name of national defense!!! Rot in hell Powell with the rest of the the lying scum!!!!!
worked on linux with firefox!
Macs, as we all know, are perfect.
Oh please don’t. I confess I got in trouble for using them here, they are a drain on the server.
How true, and how disastrous not only for us but for the planet if we wind up with a Clinton/McCain campaign which is tight and the cons are able to steal it again due to the Clinton-hatred factor. The fact remains that Hillary is a lightning rod for conservative base voters, those who are most likely to stay home on election day if McCain is nominated by the R’s. She will bring many of them out to vote against her in spite of McCain.
At the same time there is significant number on the left who will stay home if Hillary is nominated, even if it’s close against Mccain, right nomolos? I just don’t think we can afford to lose those margins.
So that does it. I’m no longer undecided. My mind is made up. I’m getting out of my pajamas, getting dressed and going out right now to vote for Barack Hussein Obama in the New York primary.
See y’all when I get back.
That too. His role in the My Lai coverup was real, yet he skated
with Haig’s help, fucked up and moved up to flag rank lifer status
and corporate rewards… brownbar all the way.
try last paragraph
Oh, but we’re talking BushCo here.
“Ridiculous” and telling a “bald-face lie” are par for the course. Still, you’ve presented a tough conundrum. Two contradictory statements are plausible, but which one is true?
(1) Bringing a vial of anthrax to the UN is clearly ridiculous, so it is exactly what we would expect of BushCo.
(2) Lying about having a vial of anthrax is the BushCo SOP, so this, too, is what we would expect.
Powell is simply a Bush toady. He could speak out today, yet remains silent. His loyalty is to the Bush family and not to this nation or even to the Army. He is a Bush toady.
Er…woman…*g*
OT,
Marcy has a great takedown of Jello Jay’s eyepopping speech against the Feingold Amendment on Fisa yesterday in the Senate.
I found these symbols by accident. Somehow a little “thingie” ended up on the top of the screen where it tells me time and so on. It’s a little US flag… and if you click on it, you can see a ton of different languages you could switch to and all sorts of designs or whatever they are. Maybe everyone has this. Or maybe I downloaded it by accident. It has chess pieces: ♔♕♖♗♘♙ (in both black and white!) currency symbols: ₡€﷼₫₪ (who knew?)
I’ve been having fun with it lately! 丈 ♬ ♪
President Washington: “Beware political parties and foreign entanglements!”
Jefferson: “Beware (corporate) aristocracies and constitutional usurpations!
Smedley Butler: “Beware War Profiteers”
President Eisenhower: Ike, “Beware of the Military Industrial Corporate Complex!”
What are we…… fucking deaf or just dumb!!!!!
For Republics, lying is troubling only when a nonrepublic does it. Lies cannot be considered good or bad. They are rated on a scale measuring the amount of political capital gained by the Republics.
You mean that computer lingo stuff. Yeah I’ve heard about that. ;o)
LOL!
Revealed. *g*
CA critter Anna Eshoo on MSNBC for Obama…
Like I said, TheraP I got in trouble for using them here because they are a drain on the server.
Amazing screenplay, amazing cast. A very young Vince D’Onofrio as the chubby Marine recruit gone haywire, Adam Baldwin as Animal Mother.
Watching FMJ even now after repeated viewings, the tension in some scenes makes my hands sweat…
I’d also recommend Dispatches to anyone interested in the Vietnam war or war time journalism.
More jealousy. I’ll go hunt for symbols sometime when I’ve not much else to do. See Elliott@132, though, who sez they drain the server.
I must admit there came a time, when I went over to the Apple Store late on a Friday night and announced: “I am a crazed PC owner!” And they said: “You’re ready to switch!” And I said: “Yes!” Half an hour later… the deal was done! Picked it up the next day. (Actually, that one was lemon… I kid you not… but this one … the replacement for the lemon…has the intel chip and works perfectly! They even gave me a new battery last month because the battery died.)
Enough of that. Nothing is perfect.
Another E-6 and I were in Saigon to hop a helo to Dong Tam when we were commandeered by the Army. We were still in our Navy whites and they put us in greens, handed each of us an M-16 and a shitload of ammo, said, “Welcome to Saigon. Get some.” and put us with a squad of grunts. Four days later we stumbled across a helo going to Dong Tam. The 20-year old warrant officer pilot had a nasty habit of flying at treetop level to draw fire so the door gunner could exercise his bungee-mounted M-60. I never met a helo pilot that was firing on all cylinders. Had to be crazy to fly Hueys anyhoo. The Mekong Delta has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. I haven’t been able to return but it’s on my list.
Is that what’s draining me? I thought it was 7 years of bush! *g*
I don’t mind disclosing on FDL what you have already disclosed yourself. Which brings me to what I meant to ask you after your comment last thread: Are you north of 59th Street on the East Side?
yea, but but, it helps to f00ker up nsa db queries.
Ok. I’ll stop draining the server. Oh, dear…. do you think it was me that took down TPM????
LOL!
Well now, THAT really is draining all of our servers
Biodun must have missed the NYFirePup photos.
Smart and Cute too.
your favorite type :)
I meant after your comment about going out to vote in your East Side neighborhood…
While you were doing that, Bush was doing?
Why is the Bush family viewed as pro-military?
No, I’m on 53rd Street. Voting place is synagogue on 51 bet. 2nd & 3rd.
I have often revealed my gender. (bjnts has posted pics from NYC meetups, too). Was just joshing you.
I know what eCAHN looks like. I’ve seen her on teevee…*g*
A mystery for the ages.
Linky for the photos?
So if putting up these tiny little characters drains a server… do you think I should go over to the repub party and post some interesting characters?
Maybe we could try a little experiment somewhere… purely academic of course! *g*
Although you had a hard time voting eCahnomics, I love the upper east side-I lived on East 86th Street during my glory years (the 80’s). I would kill for that little studio apt. right now.
LOL. So we need to develop a symbol code for posting here?
I have twin nieces-in-law. When they were children they had twin-talk. Do you think FDL will get that in-bred?
LET US NEVER FORGET.

Fox News’ Bret Baier was granted unprecedented access by George W. Bush as the President begins the final year of his extraordinarily consequential tenure. This historic documentary — shot in High Definition — takes you inside the Oval Office, to the President’s Texas ranch, aboard Air Force One, and into his private sanctums in the White House residence.
In a series of no-holds-barred interviews, the President talks openly of his aim to consolidate his mark on history, his Freedom Agenda, the failure to catch Osama bin Laden, the role faith has played in his Presidency, and how he was inspired by the writings and deeds of Abraham Lincoln.

Why would anyone want to return this masterpiece of fair-and-balanced journalism?
It amazes me how easy it is to vote for 6 numbers in Lotto.
Bingo.
lol, just no picknicks with zucchinis!
Ask and we shall receive. Thanks.
And most of the time the Lotto reward is greater. Zero return always beats a negative return.
Picnic season at my place in the mid-Hudson. But no zucchinis. We have to lock car doors during zucchini season, as if you don’t, your car will be full of them when you return.
I still believe Powell was the one person who could have brought the whole rush to war to a screeching halt if he had resigned on principle. I never understood why he took the shit off Rumsfeld and Cheney that he did; even wondered if his son’s appointment as FCC chairman was hostage. Anyway, he made his choice and will forever be known primarily for the U.N.farce.
Jack Nicholson: “I happen to be in Hillary Clinton’s camp because I think she’ll be the best man for the job.” Ha ha ha.
My bold obviously…
lol, probably comes with a rootkit from the nsa.
I’ve been thinking that the best way for the Dems to vote in this election is to place two large wooden crates at the front of the polling place. Voters get a choice of a black rock or a white rock to throw in the crate. Be easy to see who won in the end. Or maybe golf balls….
Ta Ta all.
Off to do my duty.
ECAHN, I hope it doesn’t take them 20 minutes to flip through to the M’s…
Ha!
Meeting…gotta go.
Let us know how it goes.
Thanks! Interesting FDL NYC meetup. Interesting to see what juslin looks like too…*g*
But how would you prevent some from throwing more than one stone?
Couldn’t agree with you more. Perhaps Powell never really took off his uniform while at State. He was way too deferential, and was a good example why ex-military men make poor statesmen.
heh, true enough :)
He who casts the first stone …
IMHO Dean was brought down by the MSM at the behest of the establishment Dems and Reps and the rest of the country, including the liberal/alternative media, bought into it.
Firepup Meetups. Highly recommended. Do it in your area if you get the chance. Can’t wait for our next soiree. All r welcome.
Maybe he was the exception but George Marshall was both an extraordinary military leader AND statesman.
I didn’t watch them yet but this just in from the The Real News on policy differences in the primaries.
I think you’re right, although there may be some exceptions like George C. Marshall.
I think most of us who worked in organizations are taught that you say your piece and then support the decision. Truthfully, I think we all hope that we can avoid a choice between livlihood and supporting positions we don’t endorse. But that wasn’t the case for a retired General.
We’ve done FDL meetups (small group) here in the Twin Cities 3 times…Last time was Saturday night. But we’re planning a really big one soon. We’re gonna organize to get that weasel Norm Coleman outta the Senate. He supported Giuliani; now he’s supporting McCain…
Ever since I was told to climb under my desk in elementary school I have been trying to conceptualize our nation actually being under siege by an invading army. The only threat I could ever accept was the Dr Strangelove one where some nutcase let some missiles fly. I never really believed anyone one was that crazy, but the possibility existed because those devices were targeting us and we targeting them.
Have you ever seen the case made for ANY nation invading the USA? All the rubbish about Cuba, Haiti, Grenada even Korea are not a threat to the USA and we saw what a mess the USSR was and how incapable they were in military affairs. They failed miserably in Afghanistan as we had in Vietnam.
What the US military has proved it can do is attack mosquitoes with baseball bats. We bomb, we destroy, we leveled two Japanese cities from 30,000 feet.
Regardless of how “brave” our individual foots soldiers may be, our tactics is one of cowardice. But that is how modern warfare is fought since the end of WWII.
My beef is that we don’t need a military which looks anything like it does. Wrong military for the mission of defending the USA. What we have instead is the illusion of the projection of power around the world, for one and only one purpose. And that is to extract from the world what we want, resources, oil, cheap labor, markets for our “products and services”. We intimidate.
And when we don’t do that we prop up despots and tyrants who do our bidding for us. So we sell them all the toys our MIC can produce.
We do, however, need to have the ability to defend our shores from the invasion of illegal immigrants, who are compelled to escape the third world hell we require for our own prosperity.
I don’t think a demilitarized USA would be the target for a hostile take over. What have we? Certainly not cheap labor. We have a population which is armed and would not take to someone new on the block giving them orders. Talk about an insurgency. We don’t have black gold, we have lots of corn, and water at the moment. But water is hardly a resource you can export thousands of miles. No one wants us, not even for our beautiful national parks and wilderness.
We don’t need this huge military. it is a cancer on our society. It is money not well spent and it does hardly anything to sustain the economy.
And our military has alimented most of the world and if terrorism is a problem for the USA, it is mostly a tactic used to get the military and US influence out of places it does not belong.
We have the wrong paradigm for serving our nation. We have many things which young men and women can do to make a better nation and work in the military is hardly what we need.
The notion to serve one’s country is noble, but to serve it within the military is an ethical compromised choice.
I am certain that if another Hitler were to arise somewhere, most of the civilized world would stand up the military required to resist his aggression. Sadam is not a threat to the USA and when he attacked Kuwait, the world answered him.
If we have an open society we can observe what is going on and begin diplomatic pressure. Aside from local land disputes and tribal disputes, I don’t see any imperial moves out there that require the size of the military we maintain.
And Iraq has exposed how incompetent our military is at occupation. And why are we outsourcing the work to mercenary groups, torturing people to create narratives we want to hear?
I say shrink it to less than 10% of what it is and it would still be overkill. Patriotism would be to rebuild America. She is falling apart from neglect.
I can only dream that the Iraq adventure will the the beginning of the end of USA militarism and quest for hegemony.
Pat Buchanan ventilating on MSNBC, as usual…
Someone here (you?) put me onto the fact that Coleman’s wife is an aspiring actress in Hollywood. Do the voters find that at all bizarre?
Three questions for The Decider and those aspiring to succeed him:
— What is the ultimate U.S. goal in Iraq, after which all U.S. troops will withdraw?
— How do current combat operations in Iraq bring us closer to that goal?
— How would the achievement of that goal benefit the U.S. electorate?
You gotta be talkin bout Al Franken.
Wish I could vote for him too.
He needs to be taken off life support :)
Blue Texan has a nice shiny new post upstairs ready and waiting!
You are just kidding, aren’t you?
Franken for Senate……I miss seeing him with that radar contraption coming out of his head back when he was a foreign correspondent. Is everybody from Minnesota that whack? If so I gotta get up there.
I wonder if Colin Powell is still loyal to Cheney. If so that demonstrates just what weak character he has and low self esteem. Powell should have thrashed Cheney and Rumsfeld in public and explained that Bush and Rice are beneath contempt, so he did not thrash them the same way.
Powell is a genuine tragic figure more to be pitied then despised.
well, you know, ventilator, life support, wingnut welfare ;)
All in the metaphor.
Thanks for rememberizing that skit for me. Made my day. ;o)
Never in the course of American history did one man have the opportunity to say enough… If only he’d had the courage to say…..I will not play this game and cause the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of thousand of innocent people. I refuse to support this propoganda and nonsense being put forward by this government. I am resigning my position as Secretary of State and telling the world that what is coming out of Washington regarding the threat from Iraq is a complete falsehood not unlike the German propaganda machine that gave us the Second World war. I do this on my own without coerssion from any agent. If he had said that as he sat before the United Nations instead of the clap trap that he pushed on us he would have been a true hero of the world. OH and by the way his little ” WAAAAAA Somebody lied to me” is complete BS he knew some of what he was saying was crap he said so himself before he gave the speech as he was preparing to deliver that pack of lies to the UN! HE is a coward a fraud and a liar! Oh but of course he is Loyal to his benefactors.
SanderO, this is a dream many share. I thank you for articulating it so clearly and so humanely. Unless, as a people, we wish to reduce ourselves to being nothing but despised and the major impediment to our specie’s possible survival, we must heed what you’ve said and act accordingly.
Those ‘interests’ which might oppose this move towards maturity and decency, have disgraced themselves utterly and should not be allowed to rise again. For all of our sakes, let us see the way ‘forward’ that we may find the courage and honesty to behave as the times and ‘posterity’ deserve.
The aggressive, destructive and unsustainable military perpective of this nation does not make us strong, it renders us weak and ultimately impotent, while lavishing wealth and power on those undeserving of either.
We’ve chosen the coward’s path, just as you’ve suggested, and wedded ourselves to notions of infallibility and hubris which will tear out the heart of our society and delimit our future to a squalid misery of hoplessness and despair.
Yesterday at the bookstore I had the opportunity to look into “Legacy of Ashes”. Tim Weiner asserted that none of the intelligence in the Powell speech was cherry-picked. It was literally the best intelligence because the sources in Iraq were so bad. I also looked at the Asian chapter in “The Shock Doctrine”. I did not know that the Asian crisis was an excuse for more multinationals to come into these economies. This trickles down to today as Myung-bak was elected as the Romney of South Korea. Then I chickened out and bought “Gang Leader For A Day”. That guy seems to have a terrific story, even if his voice is very dry. And Barbara Ehrenreich gave it a nice blurb.
I am going to read “The Shock Doctrine”. It was too much stress for primary season.
@ the bookstore:
“The Rest Is Noise” was somewhat disappointing. I thought it would have, like, scores and stuff. But it is for the general reader and I knew a lot of this.
The author, Sudhir Venkatesh, was just interviewed on CSPAN’s Q&A series. There’s a link there to the video of the interview.
2. Powell holding up a vial of what he purported to be ANTHRAX (remember that stuff — and how it was used to sell the war?). In actuality, it must have contained crack.

Sounds like a threat to everyone there.
Bioden-
Some of us know about Mr. Powell actions in Vietnam.
Any firepups in or Near Bend, Oregon. I have to go to the VA in Portland in March. would be nice to have a cup with some of you.
Also, the one of the major characters in part 1 (Private Pyle) is played by a very young “Bobbie” (Vincent D’Onofrio) from Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Probably my all time favorite Vietnam War flick.
If Edwards wanted a delegate stash he would have stayed in the race. He would easily have hit 15% in a number of places.
Thanks for this. Dean was the start of the rebirth.
Zogby on C-SPAN. Ron Paul supporter sez he’ll vote D if Ron Paul is not on the ticket on account of war. Zogby sez he hears that a lot.

Good point, either way you look at it from Paul (foreign or economic policy) the 800 lb elephant in the room is Iraq War II.
That was to the T
I might suggest Sending that post word for word to Lewis Black, I can only imagine the comedy bit he could develop from that frivolity, and I really like to laugh.
Laughing, with prior experience.
Yes, let’s do recall. Remember when Powell was considered God’s gift to the electorate … ooh if he would only run for president – he’d get Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike. Were you one of those so enamored with him? How quickly we forget. Just as he did not receive an appropriate amount of scrutiny, neither has Obama. What is it? Liberal guilt – the desire to promote a minority over the critical evaluation of a candidate? Isn’t that how the Senate let Clarence Thomas slide onto the Supreme Court. One can’t argue (legitimately anyway) that Clinton has not been scrutinized but the same let’s make history meme applies to her candidacy as well.
Powell is was and will always be nothing more than a tool, a good little soldier from My Lai to Iraq. Neither Clinton or Obama are progressive candidates merely egotists taking advantage of eight years of the worst administration in history because they suspected that being female or black might be enough -and, indeed, it appears it will be.
Call/fax on FISA again today; take meaningful action.
RedX@216; True enough, but tell that to those of his supporters who are talking insane shit like voting for McCain as a “protest”.
If he doesn’t come out and yank on those people’s leash very soon, he’s going to wind up smelling like Ralph Nader. And I was as loyal a supporter as he could have.
When he left the race, he should have explicitly told his supporters to vote their consciences, if not made a direct endorsement of Obama, whom he knows would be one hell of a lot more palatable to voters in the general, than would Hillary.
For him to even tolerate some of the stuff that’s being put up on his blogsite is incredible. Obama ran a fair campaign against him. Nothing outrageous; nothing over the line; and John should get on his site and state that. It would help with those of his supporters who are currently unloading some mindless and utterly non-factual vitriol on Obama.
Obama and Hillary are NOT equivalent, and when her supporters try to ride him like a horse, with their:
“We have two fine candidates to choose from.” treacle;
They’re talking nonsense. We have one fine candidate left, and one surge-applauding triangulator who cannot and will not take advantage of the issue on which the repubs are most vulnerable…Iraq.
Thanks for remembering this date.
I remember sitting in the parking lot at REI in Santa Rosa listening to NPR recap Colin’s blowhole presentation and saying “fuck” to myself. I also suggested that emptywheel include this in the timeline of nefarious acts leading us into the abyss we are now in: a country despised by any rightful citizen of the planet.
Fuck Bush.
Fuck Powell.
Fuck Tenet.
Fuck Cheney.
Fuck Wolfowitz and Perle.
Fuck Reagan.
Fuck Cheney again.
Fuck Rice.
And for that matter all of the Democrats who caved and gave Bush the unilateral powers after 911 that Cheney and Co. figured they could push into Executive branch untouchability.
Treason by any other measure.
