McCain has said on a number of occasions that he doesn’t know much about economics — although, straight-talker that he is, he has also denied having ever said such a thing. But one thing he thinks he knows is that the Bush administration has been spending like a drunken sailor. Has it?
Consider the actual record of spending. Never mind dollar figures, which grow because of inflation, population growth, and other normal factors. A better guide is spending as a percentage of GDP. And this has increased, from 18.5% in fiscal 2001 to 20% in fiscal 2007.
But where did that increase come from? Three words: defense, Medicare, Medicaid. That’s the whole story. Defense up from 3 to 4% of GDP; Medicare and Medicaid up from 3.4% to 4.6%, partially offset by increased payments for Part B and stuff. Aside from that, there’s been no major movement.
Behind these increases are the obvious things: the war McCain wants to fight for the next century, the general issue of excess cost growth in health care, and the prescription drug benefit.
So the next time Mr. McCain or anyone else promises to rein in runaway spending, they should be asked which of these things they intend to reverse. Are they talking about pulling out of Iraq? Denying seniors the latest medical treatments? Canceling the drug benefit? If not, what are they talking about?
McCain can’t open his mouth without saying these two contradictory things — we should’ve had more troops in Iraq, and we were spending too much money. Nobody ever calls him on it.
But with this embrace of "magical economics," he really does prove he’s a true conservative.

Jane!
Krug!
Hey Jane…
JANE! McCain is almost but not quite pitiful.
If a McCain lies in the woods, does anybody hear it?
The utterly completely free pass McCain has been getting from the press is frightening. It is the mirror image of the press treatment of Hillary that Jane has been very much on point about. (Boilerplate caveat about this being the case whether you like Hillary or not.)
Heh heh.
Just noticed FDL’s upcoming Book Salon looks very compelling this weekend.
No Jobs and More War
Isn’t that the Conservative Agenda for America?
Not even the local AZ media hears it except they were all a twitter because Romney was here today….
considering they have been like silly star-struck fans with all the Clebs here this last week.
There was a big “Die In” protest at McCains Phoenix’s office today but not a thing on the local news….
Good grief katymine – maybe on the evening news?
The glaring thing about McCain, to me, is his “apparent stupidity” (clearly, he is not stupid) about the Puke support. They absolutely hate him. They swiftboated him. How did he react? He joined them…..
Hmmmm…is he secretly keeping his real enemies close???? Maybe he would get elected and then send them all to the slammer…maybe those Pukes that hate him sense that. That would be the only justification for “Maverick”….Why would he want to end his hard fought life to succumb to his own enemy. Doesn’t quite add up.
Just sayin’…..
Been watching the local news for 45 minutes (starts at 5pm here) and nada…it is McCain this and Romney that…. SUPERBOWL SUPERBOWL SUPERBOWL SUPERBOWL SUPERBOWL … insert rolled eyes here…
Stockholm Syndrome.
Oh yikes – I forgot you are an hour earlier than the west coast. Surely the networks will cover it in some fashion – oh never mind.
Is this group McCain’s Swift Boaters? Is any of this legit? (that many flashy-whirly things set off my alert klaxons…)
McCain is simply too old…Can’t win.
You have to put his gibberish in context: the context being thug-speech economics. It’s hard to find a Republican other than the old finance and business exec classes who can string two words together that make sense in economics, and even that class made sense only episodically.
It’s a Republican disease. They don’t do economics, just like they don’t do evolution. McCain is in his element.
Hell no, Ted Sampley is a total moron. He owns some of the t-shirt stands between the Wall and the Reflecting Pool and is really a scumbag.
the drain in pain falls mainly on McCain.
This is the real group working against McCain
The Real McCain
Thanks.
Could be one of Ann Coulter’s gangs of maliciousness – her name is fairly prominent – but who knows who is really behind that web site.
Very good questions. For McCain such behaviors as you describe may represent ’survival mechanisms’ deeply engrained on his psyche.
But, as you suggest, there is likely a strong, though hidden, desire for revenge.
The question, then; whom would he seek to vent this ‘revenge’ upon?
The answer is probably complex, and NOT worth the risk of finding out.
McCain can’t win in general I mean. He already has the Rethug nomination, though Mitt doesn’t seem to know that yet. He hasn’t yet gotten the memo that was sent to him even before he got into the race. Let me say this once yet again: Americans ain’t ready to elect a Mormon for prez, no matter how many new positions he adopts.
Not that there’s anything wrong with new positions in other, er. realms: In one of those realms, any new position is just fine by me, thank you very much…(nor do I need the blue…oh never mind) *G*
Thanks, katymine. Now that’s a name I recognize! (Cliff Schecter, that is.)
Keith’s up on MSNBC.
It’s Sampley
Mon vieux, did you get my message about your neighbor in the last thread? Il est un tres bon ecrivain…je crois...j’ai lu tous ses romans…
McCain is cooked……..
Yep. He’ll be on fire a little later on…
A propos of nothing. Today would have been my father’s 100th birthday. I don’t usually think about it, but it struck me. He worked on the ships as an electrician repairing the damaged ones that came in from the Pacific War. Two shifts a day, never complained. Pneumonia in ‘43. I hope we can leave our grandkids as much as our parents left us. It’s a continual struggle.
My office phone numbers must have been owned by a registered Republican in the past because I checked my voice mail this morning and there were 6 robocalls from McCain. All about “closing our borders.” Huh? Another flip flop?
Also, OT slightly, but has anyone else seen the crazy Huckabee commercial here in CA wherein he tells us that he will “ABOLISH THE IRS! BECAUSE THEY HAVE TAKEN TOO MUCH OF OUR MONEY!” Or something like that. Very strange.
I am terribly afraid that you are wrong and that McCain could win.
This is even scarier depending on his choice of running mate.
It is obvious to any reasonable individual that *any* Democrat in the running (even Gravel) is an infinately better option than *any* Republican.
Of course that was obvious 4 years ago, and 8 years ago too.
These questions need to be asked of McCain (and of Hil and Barock)
Repeatedly, so that the electorate can judge for themselves.
Gathering of Eagles (GoE), ostensibly a group set up to protect the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (”The Wall”) and other war memorials, functioned as a counter-protest group during the March 17, 2007, Washington D.C. March on the Pentagon rally against the war in Iraq.
According to a February 11, 2007, posting by Rurik, managing editor of Veteran-American Voices,
“February, we were alerted by a few vets that the hard left, anti-American protesters organized around Cindy Sheehan, Jane Fonda, and their ilk planned to demonstrate in Washington on March 17, 2007, starting at the Vietnam War Memorial and marching on the Pentagon. Word spread via e-mail, and then by website.
“Last time those barbarians marched not only did they protest, but they also vandalized the Capitol while the federal Park Police did virtually nothing. This time, they would do it to Our Wall. They will dishonor the memory of Our Fallen Brothers before beginning their trek to betray and dishonor Our Serving Sons. Forbid it Almighty God!! Even if no vandalism were to occur, to expropriate The Wall as a backdrop for such a protest would be a desecration. An obscenity.”
Rurik, who had been named “Petty Officer in Charge (NCOIC for you Army types) of communications for the event” by Larry Bailey, described the composition of the nascent GoE group:
“Almost immediately veterans began to organize unofficially. … By mid-week I learned that the Arlington Holiday Inn had made available a bloc of rooms at special discount. On February 8, I learned that ViperAsh, Colonel Harry Riley and Ted Sampley and a few others were cooperating. And we had a forum to discuss and coordinate our plans. And we had a name – Gathering of Eagles.”
“The Swift Boat Sailors Association is on board. Rolling Thunder (web) is organizing independently, but will be there in alliance. And the Freepers. And the 910 Group. And as word spreads, some of the veterans organizations may send delegations.”
GoE was organized by “brave Vietnam veterans” Col. Harry G. Riley and Capt. Larry Bailey, who “realized that it was time to stop fretting and time to start acting,” Move America Forward’s Melanie Morgan wrote March 2, 2007. “They’ve organized an effort to wake up and mobilize pro-troop supporters around the nation,” Morgan wrote.
Bailey, a retired U.S. Navy Captain, was president of Vietnam Vets for the Truth, “which attacked 2004 Democratic Presidential candidate Senator John Kerry’s military record, on the heels of the more well-known” Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. [1]
vu, lu, et vaguement repondu
Does it ever end? I just finished watching “Hardball.” They should rename the show the McCain and Obama love in.
I don’t blame McCain or Obama for this. But, it is outrageous the extent to which the MSM has flagrantly interfered with the process of selecting each party’s nominee.
Good lordess. The problem is….what is true, and what are lies….
The site is vehemently anti-Kerry also. Again…what is true, and what are lies….
Hmmmm.
Happy birthday to your late father, and a century of memories.
oops
Sampley, who is anti-John Murtha, anti-John Kerry, and anti-John McCain, supports A Gathering of Eagles Forum on his U.S. Veteran Dispatch website.
It’s all bullshit, come on.
Our parents were of an age. My mom, who raised me by herself, would have been 100 this year too. A rock-ribbed Republican she wore a black armband for the Kent State students. They don’t seem to make ‘em like that any more. In this election I swear she would probably vote for Obama. She always lived in hope.
These *sshole thugs have been showing up in my town every Sat. am since Oct. trying to disrupt and incite violence at a peace vigil that’s been going on non-stop for 5 years. I can’t begin to tell you how awful they are.
Republicans don’t see these statements by McCain as contradictory because, to them, defense spending isn’t spending. Spending, you see, is something done by liberals.
How did his dog make the trip?
You don’t have to, I know.
Raven tells us it’s crap, and I believe Raven in this.
and the local cops aren’t gonna do a thing about it until there actually IS something violent. And it will happen. I know it.
I don’t believe it!!!!
…I’m just saying that people who read this crap have a difficult time knowing what are lies and what is the truth…people get manipulated by lies, truths, and half-lies and half-truths…
here’s what the democrats SHOULD do during the presidential camapaign;
ATTACK reagan, and make it CLEAR, reagan WAS NOT “reaganescque”
reaan was the author of the GREATEST TAX INCREASE in the history of peace time presidents
and bush sr followed that esteemed record in record breaking fasion himself
reagan spent like a drunk sailer and did NOT shrink government
reagan SHRUNK the middle class and was NOT a champion of Americans he was a champion for corporations
we need to STOP the relentless lies about ronald reagan, who up until this bush was close to the bottom of the barrel presidents
KO has a segment coming up stating there is a national GOP plea NOT to vote for McCain….. woooohoo… splinter that party again and again…
Louis le chat…Is he a nuissance? As for the other question about our esteemed writer: dunno. But he’s for Obama. We know that. Do you know Ayelet?
That’s why I was so concerned at the march in DC in March. They chose to start it at the gardens pretty close to the Wall and those fuckers were primed. Fortunately the DC cops were prepared and kept them apart. In my experience there are people on both sides who’d love to see blood in the streets.
Hey, you are talking about the American people there!
Well, Rushbo’s head has exploded several times over this… [snort] Couldn’t happen to a Grander Old Pervert.
I like it.
That’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout….
Iran Contra.
John McCain claims he was a footsoldier in the Reagan revolution. Reagan, remember, claimed he would increase defense spending, balance the budget and cut taxes, all at the same time. That must have made sense to McCain, which may explain why he thinks he can cut spending and escalate the war simultaneously (and with no tax increases, one would assume).
there are no attempts to keep the 2 groups separate here. A couple of weeks ago they surrounded us and were constantly shouting, a leader of the peace group was trying to read something and using a battery megaphone. What did the cops do? They told the peace activist to shut off the megaphone. No one could hear her with it ON because of the shouting. Go figure.
McCain might have multiple personality disorder, or whatever they call it these days.
From his maverick days as a congresscritter, which may only indicate ambition, to a total personality flip-flop — one would be justified in feeling scared.
No Navy Academy Fly Boy Zoomie was a damn foot soldier. Not that it was bad to have air support mind you.
Yea, I understand the situation. They are a bit like the Phelps outfit trying to provoke.
normal?
You’ll never convince the Rs that Regan wasn’t he cat’s whiskers. He’s all they have. If a D does anything at all to win R voters, he has to tie into the Reagan culture, which is why Obama did it.
They were at the march in DC in September. I have to admit that I got childish with them. I pointed over their shoulders, yelled “Look, a terrorist!” and then gave my best girly scream.
They were even at the smaller march I went to in Orlando later in the fall.
I think most Fly Boy Zoomies, whether from Annapolis or AFA, got to sleep in beds with clean sheets. Luxuries not often available to most foot soldiers.
na… it is pretty simple…
McCain ——-> Goal (be President) = will do anything regardless of principles or loyalties or defending his family
Yup.
Memo to AP: The next prez will come from the Senate, whether Rethug or Dem:
ecahn, we can
I have some serious wing nuts who believed everything corporate media spews at them
a few undeniable links to prove the reagan lies and they shut their face pronto about reagan, never to repeat them again
reagan needs to be exposed for the failure he was, and exposed for supporting terrorism and quite possibly the cause of bin laden and al qaedad
Remember when Obama said something about Reagan? Doghouse Riley got upset because he remembers the Reagan years. Then someone made a comment on his post, and he got upset again. Because he still remembers the Reagan years. For a quick synopsis on why Reagan sucked you really can’t beat Doghouse.
“a possibility if John McCain can ride his growing lead into the Republican nomination.”
A growing lead in the minority. Whoopty-doo, they will have to win by Diebold…ain’t no other way.
John McCain? An independent (maverick) thinker? What a scream.
Till they got shit down, true dat,
man, I just got this youtube off of eschaton, sam sedar talking to the supporters of mccain
must see TEEvee
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..gspot.com/
Lots of younger voters don’t know Reagan and don’t care about Reagan. I had a similar visceral reaction to all the Vietnam War talk in the 1992 campaign. That war was before my time, and although of course I realize it is very important, I got frustrated because the Vietnam topic started to overwhelm others.
I am starting to think of puppet masters.
Reagan talked a balanced budget and created a blowout.
In 1966, Alan Greenspan wrote on the cause of the Great Depression, easy credit via the Fed — and then did the same thing expecting a different outcome?
And Dubya mumbled about a modest foreign policy …
So — what can we expect for 2009?
Obviously we need to cut takes some more and increase spending. Say on an invasion of Iran. Right Mr. McCain? I think it’s called voodoo economics. And we know John loves him some Bush.
AP was clearly editorializing there about McCain…but I wasn’t going to touch that…*g*
That was shot down.
lol…I knew that! ;>
each time they are exposed they become more brazen
the only reason weNO took the majority in both houses is they never anticipated how much they had to fix the machines
they wanted to make it look like it was close but there were more democratic votes then they anticipated
they are NOT above “super duper” fixing the machines, now that they know that’s what they have to do, do NOT be surprised if that’s what happens
Mr. McCain would fail a lower division logic course.
So, how’d you like it in the last one. Don’t worry, we’ll be gone soon :)
HA! KO just said “Man on dog Santorum!”
Must read; Scott Horton on torture.
http://www.harpers.org/archive…..c-90002305
McCain. Olbermann and Gene Robinson are blasting this guy.
and those are the ‘reagan truths” we have to use to expose the reagan myth for what it is, a set of lies
all the republicans do is back talk, if they say one thing they are working on the reverse
if they say they are anti gay, they are flames, if they say they are for small government they will grow it exponentially, if they say they are pro military that means they are drft dodgers, if they say they are for peace expect war, if they say they want no child left behind that means they want no child in school, if they say they want no welfare that means they want to give welfare to the wealthy
the list goes on adfinitum and I don’t want to get epu’d with this post so I’ll stop right there, feel free to add to the list though
I’d imagine most of ‘em felt they’d been shit down though when they got shot down.
Well … don’t forget the first R — the one that tops every list I’ve seen of “best presidents”.
I had that exact thought at the time…pretend everything is on the up and up…throw the Dems a little chicken bone…what machines????…Then wait till 2008 and pull out the big guns….
We must stay on top of this or else…or else…all hell’s gonna break loose….that would be just one way they could mess with the people.
I don’t think the current racist R party would look to him as a symbol of their greatness.
I am still expecting some kind of “catastrophy” that the president will claim to suspend the constitution and elections
I will NOT be surprised, will anyone?
Especially when Bombs Away LeMay made them fly the same flight paths day after day and bank so their jammers were ineffective. The stone age indeed.
Nope. Not in the least.
Well, it sure as hell overwhelmed all of us when it was happening…what’s happening now, is horrendous….Vietnam was horrendous magnified, and it affected everyone…
True conservatives do not believe in foreign adventures (engaging in unprovoked wars), being the world’s policeman, or deficit spending. Does this description fit McCain or Romney or today’s Republican Party?
Not at all. They are tricky, and they are older and more desperate to maintain what they have gained. That is pretty compelling. They are not nice.
Ron Paul mostly.
I don’t care who we bomb. Let’s just bomb somebody. We need to jump start this economy.
Nope. No surprise if tat happens.
McCain is a maverick except when he’s not which is most of the time.
I have to disagree with Krugman. It is not just the percentage growth in spending that matters but how it and the rest of the spending is paid for. Under Bush it has been largely borrow and spend. The costs of maintaining and paying back that debt over time multiply. The national debt has ballooned under Bush. That indebtedness will be an anchor on us and our economy for decades.
You also have to look at what all this money was spent on. As many upthread have pointed out, there is the Iraq war but who knows how much has been stolen or wasted by sweetheart legislation selling off the government and our nation’s resources to corporate sponsors or contracts for poor work or no work at all.
Are you channeling Darth Cheney? Stop it — you’re scaring me!
I thought I’d be safe by moving out of NYC in the late 90’s…Jeesh..I moved to Texas…now one of the biggest targets…thanks to the Bush’s.
Ah yes, Bombs Away with Curtis LeMay – George Wallace’s running mate in ‘68 on the “American Independent Party” ticket.
Hillary will, the first chance she gets she’ll prove she’s tough. You heard it here first.
fb
McCain is rumored to have a very nasty temper. He’s the perfect choice to be the man with his finger on the nuclear trigger. Don’t you think?
Sure, and so did WWI, WWII, the Civil War (especially that one) and the Revolutionary War. My point is that younger folk will tune out and turn off if the election rhetoric was about Reagan.
Like arrest and persecute Bushco for their crimes???? /s
Now…that would prove she’s tough!!!
Lord I long for the calm thoughtfulness of peace candidate Barry Goldwater.
I agree with you totally, and I understand what you are saying.
I think they’ll tune it out no matter what it’s “about”, because it’s, like , boring and MTV is on.
When the budget is spent on bombs…. it is a single time purchase and poof they are gone and in Iraq, the cost of repairing the damage caused by those bombs are added to the bill.
But look at what the WWII GI bill returned, the latest study is that for every dollar spent returned $7. In my family with two WWII vets as parents, it returned with a third generation of college educated professions. I think that is way more than a X 7 return on investment.
John McCain: an old man with even older ideas.
As Raven says, you shan’t have to put up with us much longer, and you may thank your lucky stars that you don’t carry around the weight of that era.
Beyond that, think how the weight of ‘now’ will seem ‘too much’ or ‘over much’ for those who are too young or not even here yet, while you, poor fellow, will never be totally free of it.
Believe me, if you are realy lucky then you will understand.
Draft their young asses and they’ll get interested.
Americans are screaming for change. And John McCain is the Republican frontrunner. Mildly amusing.
Hey, you been reading my dissertation? :)
Well, in later years he did say “Remember me? I’m the lunatic who wanted to escalate the war in Vietnam.” (Paraphrasing… I can’t remember what he called himself…) The line was a guaranteed rueful laugh line.
Whoa, OT
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Bob Knight resigned Monday at Texas Tech, a stunning midseason move by the winningest men’s coach in major college basketball.
“He said he was tired and that it was best to go ahead and do it now,” Texas Tech chancellor Kent Hance told The Associated Press. “I think Bob is through with coaching. I think he got to the point where it wasn’t fun for him.”
for those that will not be surprised if elections are suspended;
expect the tubes to be shut down, the do whatever it takes to keep Americans from organizing
no tubes, not email, and state approved radio broadcasts only
it will be a lock down of information
Have you guys forgotten MTV’s Rock the Vote? Which i believe Obama and HRC just took part in with apearrances on this weekend? MTV isn’t entirely bling, but it does do that vote thing nowadays. :P I have no idea if it deals with the rethugs or whether they made any effort to get there, but the dem candidates did.
I can’t gaurantee the rest of the content, but i do know that’s still up and running on that station.
na … just living it…..just let me know if you need any personal info!
It had about ZERO effect on the last one.
It’s amazing how many people I have run into since I finished that I could have used (I finished 10 years ago). I looked at high school GED Grads, of which I am one, and part of that was an examination of the GI Bill.
I heard Knight quit because chair tossing wasnt made an Olympic event.
perris, it will be a lockdown of more than information.
I predict power outages, selected SWAT raids at 3 am (to encourage the others, you know) and bank closures, no ATMs, gasoline controlled if even available. No communication, no money, no transport …
I’ve taken precautions.
Being a die-hard Illini I have always really disliked him. AMF
True, true. I have no idea what it’ll do with this one. (and i don’t have mtv myself as it is.)
We’ll see, it’s always motivated me that I could not vote for 14 months after I came home from Nam, never miss no matter what kind of douche bags are running.
As another Illini, I don’t like him much either but then I didn’t like him when I was growing up in Kentucky either.
Gee Rob, My father was in WW II, My grandfather in WW I and my cousins in Korea, you don’t think I was interested in their perpectives?
Well, surprise! I was, and guess what? They all influnenced my perpectives. And not just on war, but especially on peace. Of course I never regarded history as ‘bunk’ either, especially when proffered to me by living, breathing people whom I cherished, so I’m definitely prejudiced.
But you, clearly have no need of older heads and I can’t help but admire your forebearance in putting up with so many us here. Must be quite a challenge?
well, they won’t be swat raids they will be brown shirt
I mean blackwater raids
Lookin forward to tomorrow.
John McCrazy is insane. The End. ;-)
super tuesday should be called “super rich tuesday”…too many primaries and you need too much money to proceed
it’s the only reason edwards dropped out, he didn’t raise enough money to compet in all the primaries for this “spectacular”
we need to change the primaries, I think starting with the smallest delgates and going forward from there, perhaps bunch a few smaller primaries together but certainly not bunch the big ones
we need this fixed
“Senator Obama, do you think that the Department of Homeland Security raising the Security Condition to Red had something to do with your sudden extreme drop in the polls against President-elect McCain? Was your age and lack of experience too much for the average voter to overcome? Some have suggested that the SECON was raised deliberately to “steal” the election from you; would you care to comment on that?” Wolf Blitzer, Nov. 2008
If Mr. Straight Talk wants to avoid having to order our troops back for their 6th or 7th tours in Iraq, as implied by “no surrender”, he is going to have to expand the military in a massive, costly way How is that consistent with his claim we are spending too much?
