True but while they installed that splitter they just moved traffic to a different cable and then back when the splitters was installed…. USN can and does do deep sea intercepts…. but usually on copper cables… using capacitor induction Electrical current… fiber is light and it is shielded

(Note the 0% it currently shows for Iran is misleading, it just means the only site they are testing for in Iran is still not connected.)

Okay, found that seaquakes are often the cause of multiple breaks of undersea cables. In December 2006 NINE cables simultaneously broke after a 6.1 earthquake off SE Asia disrupting internet and phone traffic for months.
Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and China were impacted.

http://www.reuters.com/article.....dChannel=0

Sometimes telecommunications firms simply allow a break to sit because they have redundancy, then they get screwed when the other cable gets broken. I mentioned this above…in 2003 there was a “double break” between Europe and N. America (actually the damage to one cable had occurred months before the other but only announced when service crashed).

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/commun.....125,00.htm

Service is rarely disrupted entirely, there are scores of cables that have been laid with many destinations. I would find it extremely unlikely that more than a few % of messages aren’t getting through entirely, and the delays might merely relate to speed of transmission issues. Things are simply routed through other links.

People today expect extremely high transmission speed and download time. But that’s not gonna delay word of an attack to the media and public for more than a few seconds. And in terms of internal or regional response it wouldn’t affect it at all.

Easier to intercept it where the cable emerges from the depths…a la how they did with ATT in SF. Particularly if you wish to obtain loads of information.

Are all these cables located in the Mediterranean? Not very deep there. And doesn’t repair actually entail relaying the entire cable, which subverts the whole introduction of some sort of splitter on the sea floor. A few years ago, when two major Transatlantic cables snapped almost simultaneously it took months to lay new cables.

But if an ally wants to attack them and you don’t want the world to know, at least not much, at least not right away, then cutting Iran’s internet lines would do the trick.

Nope, tons of satellite transmission link-ups in the Middle East (and Iran), and internet and phone traffic isn’t likely to be the means of reporting an attack. Al Jazeera, and many other news groups in the Gulf have satellite links.

An attack on an Iranian facility would likely only be revealed by the Iranian government…through their official news agency. They’d have no issue using satellite transmissions to convey that information.

“Sell By Date”? What candidate hasn’t been out there for months?

Do you make your decisions about who to vote for based on candidate appearances where they are competing with amphetamine-laced hyper produced MTV videos and shows? That stuff is for people with attention spans of 5 minutes. Sorry you are bored.

All off the shelf PK crypto like PGP is essentially transparent to NSA. (I did some work in that exact area once.)

The thing is, I think McCain is a very strong candidate, possibly the strongest the Republicans could have fielded. Among most non-political-junkies I know, McCain is very popular with both Democrats and Republicans, who respect his record as a soldier and his rep for straight talk(deserved or not). I don’t agree with him on anything, but I think he’ll be very tough to beat.
