don’t say that RevDeb, we have a mission, to elect more and better Democrats at the local level. The national election is disappointing to me, too. Got the Primary Blues. but we’s got lots to do.

Depressing is what it is, no doubt. We have to work very hard at getting progressives into Congress. We need as many dem senators as we can and more, many more, progressive reps. Neither of the candidates that we have been “given” are worth a snot as far as I am concerned but I will be working as hard as I can to get more dems overall into Congress. It seems to me to be our only hope.

Trying to lead my congresscritter down the impeachment path but I find the lack of spine—either that or they have all sold out—on behalf of the whole lot of them disgraceful. I preach a lot about moral compass but it seems that the country has lost it.

When the RAGE is there the spine will follow.

Time for Mukasey to resign

Mukasey promised during his confirmation hearing that if Bush pressured him to break the law, he would resign. It’s time to call him on this and insist that he resign.

From a CNN article on the hearings:

Attorney General-nominee Michael Mukasey made it clear to senators Wednesday he would be independent from the White House and would make legal decisions based “on facts and law, not by interests and motives.”

Mukasey, appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he would resign from office if faced with a presidential order he believed was unconstitutional.

“I would try to talk him [the president] out of it — or leave,” he said.

Clearly, Mukasey knows torture has taken place, yet he refuses to begin prosecution of those who took part. His “investigation” of the destruction of the torture tapes lacks the independence it requires to achieve a real outcome. Just these two acts alone violate his pledge during the hearing. I am sure many more examples can be found from his short time in office.

As Glenn has pointed out, oversight from Congress and from the courts now is nonexistent. The only recourse left as a check on the Bush abuses of the executive branch is action by concerned citizens. We need to contact every member of the Senate Judiciary Committee to remind them of Mukasey’s pledge and the evidence that he has already violated it. We will have to shame the committee into taking its Constitutionally mandated oversight role.

Congress may be content with waiting out the Bush Administration. I am not.

I think they had rage and spine removal surgery the day after they took their oaths of office.

What bothers me is that there is nothing Bush can do that will make the congress do its job. His nastiness is getting worse and the Senate continues to be polite. He made a signing statement authorizing him to have permanent bases in Iraq and everyone said ho-hum.
This is going anywhere good and now the one voice who cared is gone.

My congresscritter thinks impeachment is a joke. Told me if we DO impeach Bush we will have President Cheney on the bully pulpit until the election.

I think that many of our fellow citizens have a strong moral compass, but that few of our elected leaders have one. The pragmatic approach to political problems leads people to abandon strong moral feelings in the name of getting something done. That is just as true of torture as it is of universal health care. Eventually, putting up with pork to get a small change in SCHIP becomes a way of life, and it is just as easy to agree to warrantless wiretapping and torture to get some minor progress on something seems like a reasonable trade.

I think RevDeb is right to be depressed. I don’t see the source of change in this pervasive bipartisan attitude.

The “wifey” thing is certainly a fascinating topic. Last night, while loving the commentary here on the debates, I saw some wife “pics”: even Mrs. Romney looked like she was about to puke, and Rudy/Judy stood by with the adoring Nancy R. gaze. Mrs. McCain looked calm and classy. Sorry, I started this. It really is not quite fair just because they are on standby. Just saying: Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Obama certainly look like they can go the distance without “stepping in it.”

This is [not] going anywhere good and now the one voice who cared is gone.

I think we have to resign ourselves to no impeachment, no great change in a new prez, no effective oversight from Congress, no universal healthcare, no affordable education, no increase in the dollar’s value, no withdrawal from Iraq, an increase in belligerence toward Iran, more sucking up to Israeli rightwing nutfucks, increased invasion of our rights to privacy and more buggered up foods. It is a mess and there is no chance of meaningful change in my lifetime.

Any dem will be miles better than Bush and his neocon theocon con artist clowns he brought into government.

Progressives will require a revolution and they will not speed in electorally. That’s pretty obvious.

No linky but this is a manifestation of genetic mental illness, running in families, a pathology of excessive greed coupled with lack of restraint and perspective, paralleling pathologies of sociopath and psycopath dysfunction. These people would be and are winners in rat-race competition for economic resources which is the foundation of their extreme wealth. Couple this with social-darwinism as justification, with limitless economic resource, no institution is or can be safe from their predatory natures.
Once kings used such behavior to assemble an aristocracy that protected the interests of the king, no king would allow any in the aristocracy to have any more than an insubstantial portion of power in relation to the power of the king.
When the American economy was developing, no heed was given and the economic plutocracy that developed were able to either completely monopolize an economic process (Rockefeller and Standard Oil) or limit those acting within an economic process to a mere handful of entities (Look at the five grain companies who control about 90% of US annual agricultural output, at least one is privately owned and no annual accounting is given) controlling an economic market.
Nothing in history has prepared any government to handle such a situation, no king that allowed a substantial accumulation of power survived without a battle to the death with those accumulating such power. The prognosis for the future is bleak with conflict, those wielding such economic power will not relinquish their hold without the use of force greater than theirs.

Now you, Arnie, have really ‘truthed’ us. The reality, that you have elegantly and precisely delineated, is actually ’sinking in’, more and more.
