Katie would like to thank everyone for their prayers, kind thoughts and support during her five years at Guantanamo Bay night at the pet hospital.
She is struggling to recover from her Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and has applied for disability on account of her shaved paw (seen at left) which she brandishes proudly. She informs me that frequent snacks snacks (particularly those of the organic chicken variety sent by scarecrow) are an effective treatment for PTSD.
Who knew.
She is considering writing her memoirs but right now the scars are too fresh. She would also like it to be known that me calling her "the First Lady of the American Theater" is, quote, "not helpful."

Minus 12F at our lake right now. I’ve been writing about Rep. Don Young, who announced yesterday that he’s formed a legal defense fund. This was partially in response to my efforts to get information about how his campaign was moving funds from one account to another in efforts to pay his legal bills, which some months have been as high as a quarter million dollars.
Last night I produced and hosted a multimedia presentation by erin and hig, the trekkers who are 5/8ths of the way on a trek – by hiking, skiing and pack raft – from Seattle to the Aleutians, as a protest against the planned building of the biggest gold mine in the world near Bristol Bay, the world’s richest Sockeye fishery.
Those two kids are so cool! Packed the hall – well over 200 people, most of whom are incredible wilderness athletes. Unlike me….

For the Senator Clinton fans, Cynthia McFadden is doing a piece where she followed Clinton around today on ABC “Nightline.”
I really wish he (and Elizabeth) had stayed in the race. They made a real difference. Gave the lie to the cynical horse race garbage of the corporate media. And I say that even if some suspected Edwards of being opportunistic in his rather dramatic change in approach to campaigning. That always seemed a strange line to me, since I think anyone who follows things would realize that road Edwards chose for this cycle was not a guaranteed or easy way to anything. The media’s discrimination against him was predictable given his chosen campaign theme.
I think several timid centrist Dems have tragically found their nerve and courage after getting beat in election, and started showing a little leadership when it was too late. Gore, Kerry are two. Maybe Edwards is another.
I think they started out wanting Hillary, but somewhere along the line they decided Obama would be easier to beat. When the process started Obama wasn’t in the picture. Between the Muslim bs, the middle name, the race, the cocaine, Resko(?) and who knows what else, they’re going to crucify him.
We’ve got our work cut out for us.

The national political scene is pretty discouraging. Let’s retreat into more & better Ds for awhile & lick our wounds.
The good news is that what’s left on the D side is more palatable that what is left on the R side of the race.
Both the remaining Democratic candidates are flawed in my opinion. But, then we are supposed to be a nation of laws, not peersonalities, so that is OK. Something is wrong if our system canot handle flawed characters being president -since frinstance, all characters are flawed to some extent. And also, all the GOP possibilities are walking disaster areas.
So, I comfort myself with the thought that the next Congress is what really matters. I think that if another timid and passive Congress allows the next President (whether Democratic or GOP) to continue any of the de facto precedents set by the current criminal adminstration, that will be very dangerous.

So speaking of sweets. When I was growing up, my parents rented the upstairs apt to a widow who had run a bakery. She baked every birthday cake for myself & my brothers. Tex as a parent of grown kids I find this abhorrent… What kind of parent does this to their own flesh and blood.. I agree with Cassy that these people should be jailed and the key thrown away… Hope fully when we get more progressive in power this kind of thing can be outlawed as it should be… Tell Cassie to keep up her good work!
Signing statements are something that other Presidents KNEW carried great risks…they were telling Congress “I ain’t implementing your law BECAUSE it is Unconstitutional…and if you don’t like it challenge it before the Courts.”
THIS PRESIDENT basically is telling the Congress, “I’m KING and I can do the Unconstitutional”. They need to challenge him or impeach him.
Telling Congress that he won’t follow laws that have no Unconstitutional constructs within them…telling Congress that HE will unilaterally make treaties directly at odds with Congressional limits.

but they won’t. ive lost all hope that will happen, especially after seeing recent youtubes of conyers and whatisname bailing (”not what’s best for the country”) who were the stalwarts of impeachment only two years ago. It’s lost. The Republic. Lost. It will take a freakin miracle to get it back.
Eureka…Obama has repeatedly stated his opposition to the war AND opposed the War long before Edwards made his recantation. You might argue that Obama’s withdrawal plans are slower than Edwards’, but Edwards still would have left a sizeable (3-5000 troop) residual force (of about 50% of the troops the US used in Afghanistan up until recently)…AND a Rapid Strike Combat Force just across the border in Kuwait.
Edward’s also said that “nothing is off the table” regarding Iran’s nuclear programs when he spokeat the Herzliya Conference in January of last year.
What can I say? Given that even if Edwards won the nomination these things would still have happened. But no future President has to accept these “treaties” and contracts made without legal Congressional authority. In fact, a Presidential nominee could simply state that such contracts would be void unless the law, as stated, is enforced. The firms could be expected to refund to the Treasury any such payments made illegally by the Executive. And the next President (or the nominee) could state explicitly that anyone who disobeyed the Congressional mandates would be making themselves subject to potential criminal prosecution.
John Edwards would make an excellebt Attorney General…methinks.

Not sure I believe Obama, yet. Let me see some more fighting action.. perhaps voting no on defense/war money etc.. Must say I was impressed by his late showing but signing onto Dodds amendment this week.
